Reconciling The Electronic And Geometric Corrugations Of The Hexagonal Boron Nitride And Graphene Nanomeshes, William C. Mckee, Vincent Meunier, Ye Xu Dec 2015

Reconciling The Electronic And Geometric Corrugations Of The Hexagonal Boron Nitride And Graphene Nanomeshes, William C. Mckee, Vincent Meunier, Ye Xu

Faculty Publications

Monolayer hexagonal boron nitride on Rh(111) and graphene on Ru(0001) illustrate a trend of divergence between the density functional theory (DFT) calculated geometric corrugation, and scanning tunneling microscope (STM) measured apparent corrugation, of metal-supported 2D films that feature chemically distinct regions. Notably, the geometric and apparent corrugations differ by up to 2 Å for boron nitride/Rh(111), whereas both the DFT-simulated and the experimentally observed STM images agree in the apparent corrugation over a wide range of bias voltages. The disparity is due to unequal contributions of the low/high-lying atoms to the local density of states in the vicinity of the …

Senary Refractory High-Entropy Alloy Crxmonbtavw, B. Zhang, M. C. Gao, Y. Zhang, S. M. Guo

Faculty Publications

This paper demonstrates that a senary refractory high-entropy alloy CrxMoNbTaVW can be tailored over a certain range of Cr content with the BCC structure for different microstructures and physical properties, assisted by CALPHAD simulations. Microstructure characterizations are performed using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Chemical micro-segregation during solidification predicted using the Scheil model generally agrees with the experimental results. The lattice constant, density, and Vickers' micro-hardness of the high-entropy alloy samples in the as-cast state are measured and discussed. For CrxMoNbTaVW, x=2.0 case appears exceeding the upper limit of maintaining a single BCC phase HEA, determined by the XRD …

Modelling Water Uptake Provides A New Perspective On Grass And Tree Coexistence, Michael G. Mazzacavallo, Andrew Kulmatiski Dec 2015

Modelling Water Uptake Provides A New Perspective On Grass And Tree Coexistence, Michael G. Mazzacavallo, Andrew Kulmatiski

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Root biomass distributions have long been used to infer patterns of resource uptake. These patterns are used to understand plant growth, plant coexistence and water budgets. Root biomass, however, may be a poor indicator of resource uptake because large roots typically do not absorb water, fine roots do not absorb water from dry soils and roots of different species can be difficult to differentiate. In a sub-tropical savanna, Kruger Park, South Africa, we used a hydrologic tracer experiment to describe the abundance of active grass and tree roots across the soil profile. We then used this tracer data to parameterize …

Northern Illinois Law Review Supplement

A prevalent issue that homeschooled students face is access to interscholastic athletics at public schools. Over the past several decades, the United States has seen an upward trend in the number of children who are homeschooled. In Illinois, the local public school determines whether homeschooled students may participate in activities at public schools. While this Comment explores a sample of varying laws and regulations on homeschooled student participation in public school athletics, the purpose is to examine the debate on homeschooler's access to public schools and why the Illinois Legislature should create a minimum standard that would allow homeschooled students …

The Effect Of Neurostimulation On Ischemic Pain And Methods Of Assessing Pain, Kaylee Keck Dec 2015

The Effect Of Neurostimulation On Ischemic Pain And Methods Of Assessing Pain, Kaylee Keck

Biomedical Engineering

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) impacts approximately eight million people in the United States [1]. Disease progression leads to chronic ischemic pain, hindering quality of life. Pharmaceuticals are a typical treatment for pain associated with PAD; but as few as 30% of patients have a significant reduction of pain (≥50%) [2].

Neurostimulation is commonly used as a treatment for various diseases and injuries, including Parkinson’s disease and sports-related back and knee injuries [2]. The objective of the study was to explore neurostimulation and its effect on pain and paresthesia for a model of acute peripheral ischemia in young college students.

Comprehensive Neural Network Forecasting System For Ground Level Ozone In Multiple Regions, Gautam Raghavendra Eapi

Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive

A comprehensive neural network daily maximum 8 hour-ozone forecasting model was developed based on five years of data (2010-2014) collected from 50 monitoring sites from the Dallas Fort Worth, Houston-Galveston-Brazoria, Los Angeles, San Joaquin and San Diego regions. This work represents the first neural network developed to forecast ozone in multiple regions, as well as multiple sites in the same region. Previous studies have developed separate neural network models to forecast ozone at each location. Two stages of feature selection were applied to reduce input vector dimension and redundancy. These are Piecewise Linear Orthonormal Floating Search (PLOFS), and Karhunen - …

Post Hoc Analysis On The Effect Of Early Intensive Behavioral Intervention Provided To Preschool Children On The Autism Spectrum, Catherine R. Maxwell Dumont

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

Early Intensive Behavioral Intervention (EIBI) provides a framework for educators to assist children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to increase independence and positive social skills in the classroom (Reichow, 2012). Preschoolers with ASD who do not have access to programs tend to display negative and socially inappropriate behavior, such as acts of aggression, withdrawal, and inability to attend to lessons. Studies on program effectiveness documented that preschool children who received EIBI scored higher on IQ, language comprehension, imitation, expressive language, nonverbal communication, play, stereotyped behaviors and adaptive functioning compared to preschool children who do not receive EIBI. The literature …

Mechanical Reliability Of Porous Low-K Dielectrics For Advanced Interconnect: Study Of The Instability Mechanisms In Porous Low-K Dielectrics And Their Mediation Through Inert Plasma Induced Re-Polymerization Of The Backbone Structure, Yoonki Sa Dec 2015

Mechanical Reliability Of Porous Low-K Dielectrics For Advanced Interconnect: Study Of The Instability Mechanisms In Porous Low-K Dielectrics And Their Mediation Through Inert Plasma Induced Re-Polymerization Of The Backbone Structure, Yoonki Sa

Material Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Continuous scaling down of critical dimensions in interconnect structures requires the use of ultralow dielectric constant (k) films as interlayer dielectrics to reduce resistance-capacitance delays. Porous carbon-doped silicon oxide (p-SiCOH) dielectrics have been the leading approach to produce these ultralow-k materials. However, embedding of porosity into dielectric layer necessarily decreases the mechanical reliability and increases its susceptibility to adsorption of potentially deleterious chemical species during device fabrication process. Among those, exposure of porous-SiCOH low-k (PLK) dielectrics to oxidizing plasma environment causes the increase in dielectric constant and their vulnerability to mechanical instability of PLKs due to the loss of methyl …
