Information Technology For Development In Small And Medium-Sized Enterprises, Jie Xiong, Sajda Qureshi Dec 2015

Information Technology For Development In Small And Medium-Sized Enterprises, Jie Xiong, Sajda Qureshi

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Development is a concept that is often used to describe growth in organizations and the regions in which they reside. While research in Information Systems (IS) recognizes the importance of Information Technology (IT) in improving the organizational performance, a great deal of emphasis is given towards understanding large organizations. While social-economic development and transformation relies on new technological infrastructures and organizational changes, there is still a weak link between the organization studies with Information Technology (IT) as it relates to the growth of organizations. It appears that a greater research focus is needed in understanding the use of IT in …

International Cooperation: Strengthening Midwifery In Central Asia, Meike Kolfenbach, Karen Birdsall

Journal of Asian Midwives (JAM)

Even 25 years after their independence, the Central Asian States (Kyrgyzstan / Tajikistan / Uzbekistan) are facing enormous challenges in the health system. Several years ago it became obvious that the MDG 4 and 5 would not be fully achieved. This led to an increased support of the health systems of the concerned countries by Germany’s International Cooperation. The GIZ Regional Health Programme in Central Asia placed great emphasis upon increasing the number of births attended by health professionals, including midwives. The strengthening of midwifery as a model of a sustainable maternal and child health relies on a broad based …

Community Based Midwives Practice In Patriarchal Social System, Yasmeen Jan Mohammad, Rafat Jan Dec 2015

Community Based Midwives Practice In Patriarchal Social System, Yasmeen Jan Mohammad, Rafat Jan

Journal of Asian Midwives (JAM)

It is well accepted globally, that midwives can save the lives of mothers and their new-born successfully, if the community stakeholders provide support and freedom for full scope of practice. Recognising this many countries deploy midwives in the community as an intervention to achieve the MDGs (Millennium Development Goals) 4 and 5 targets set for decreasing maternal and neonatal mortality, respectively.

However, high-income countries’ reports show very good results, in achieving MDGs 4 and 5 while the low-income countries lag behind in this regard. The situation in high-income and low-income countries is different because midwives practising in the community in …

Evaluation Of The Impact Of Dust Containing Platinum Group Elements On Bacterial Growth, Oxidative Stress Sensitivity And Biofilm Formation, Mohammed Olufemi Suraju Dec 2015

Evaluation Of The Impact Of Dust Containing Platinum Group Elements On Bacterial Growth, Oxidative Stress Sensitivity And Biofilm Formation, Mohammed Olufemi Suraju

Theses (Pre-2016)

The rising concentrations of Platinum Group Elements (PGEs) in the environment have raised serious concerns about their physiological impact. Some of the consequences of PGE exposures are known to include platinosis (which is characterized by extreme wheezing and sneezing), increased sensitivity to allergens and diarrhea. Currently, it is not known if dust containing PGEs are a bonafide microbial stress agent or if they. have any impact on microbes. Here, it was demonstrated by analysis of growth, oxidative stress sensitivity, and biofilm production assays that dust containing PGEs (house and road dust) are bonafide microbial stress agents. In addition, it was …

Identifying Smartphone Based Warning Messages To Enhance Safety In Work Zone, Ruksana Rahman Dec 2015

Identifying Smartphone Based Warning Messages To Enhance Safety In Work Zone, Ruksana Rahman

Theses (Pre-2016)

Collisions in the work zone have always been a contributing factor to compromising safety on urban roadways. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the State Transportation Authorities have implemented many safety countermeasures to reduce forward collisions in work zones. However, due to the complexity of traffic in a work zone, traditional countermeasures often fail to prevent crashes. As such, smart warning systems can be applied to notify motorists about the upcoming conditions in work zones. In this study, smartphone-based warning systems were designed to investigate (Phase-A) effectiveness in notifying users about the presence of a work zone and …

The Effects Of Explicit Code-Switching Instruction On Student Writing Performance For Students Who Speak Non-Standard Forms Of English, Jeffrey R. Allen Dec 2015

The Effects Of Explicit Code-Switching Instruction On Student Writing Performance For Students Who Speak Non-Standard Forms Of English, Jeffrey R. Allen

Education Masters

This research project began by asking how explicit code-switching instruction would impact the writing performance of non-standard English speaking students. Participants included twelve sixth grade students and twelve teachers. The data collected was teacher interviews, anecdotal notes, writing samples, teacher questionnaires, student work samples, and audio recorded code-switching practice sessions. Findings revealed that students were not able to translate their knowledge of and proficiency with oral code-switching and dialect variance to written code-switching. In addition, James Prep’s implementation of code-switching pedagogy is not adequate. The data implied that without valuing the home languages of students and building a culture of …

Impact Of Children's Literature On Family Structures And Children's Perceptions Of Family, Lindsey M. White

Education Masters

This study asks, what is the impact of children’s literature on children’s perceptions of family structures? Literature teaches young children a great deal about the world in which they live; therefore, literature plays a large role in children’s perceptions of others. This study uses triangulation with three forms of qualitative data collected by children’s drawings of families, interviews, questionnaires, and discussions. The study found that young children can understand differences of others. Teachers hold a great deal of responsibility for shaping the minds of the future and literature has a large impact on how children learn about others and perceive …

Pharmacy Faculty/Staff Publications

Establishment of Interdisciplinary healthcare teams have shown to improve health outcomes and lower readmission rates in medically complex patients during hospitalization. Exploration of interventions has happened largely during the pre-discharge phase rather than post-discharge. To extend the team based approach, we implemented a pilot study of an interdisciplinary discharge clinic to determine what impact a biopsychosocial approach to care can have on hospital readmission rates. This work was conducted at a large family medicine residency-based practice, and facilitated by a physician, behavioral health clinicians, a clinical pharmacist, nurse care managers, and medical assistant. Patients were seen in the discharge clinic …

Stability Of Extemporaneously Prepared Sodium Benzoate Oral Solution, Andrew S. Decker, Melinda E. Lull, David Hutchinson

Pharmacy Faculty/Staff Publications

Purpose: Sodium benzoate (NaC7H5O2), a common food preservative, is the salt form of benzoic acid. It is used as an alternative treatment in patients with hepatic encephalopathy or urea cycle disorders as it is believed help stimulate ammonia removal via a non-urea cycle based pathway. Despite its use, sodium benzoate is not an FDA approved medication and has no commercially available oral formulations, although an IV formulation is available in combination with sodium phenylacetate (Ammonul®). The objectives of this study were to prepare a sodium benzoate solution and determine the stability of an extemporaneously prepared oral solution over a 90-day …

“Men Of Good Timber”: An Archaeological Investigation Of Labor In Michigan’S Upper Peninsula, Aaron Howe Dec 2015

“Men Of Good Timber”: An Archaeological Investigation Of Labor In Michigan’S Upper Peninsula, Aaron Howe

Masters Theses

This study approaches the material assemblage of Coalwood, a cordwood camp that operated from 1900-1912 in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, with a dialectal method and a theory of internal relations in order to understand how daily life was produced and reproduced. Common sense notions often see home and work as separate entities that only relate to one another externally. My archaeological and historical research abstracts domestic labor as a set of social relations that are dialectically and internally connected to the processes of capital accumulation. My archaeological analysis concludes that both productive and reproductive labor was conducted within the home and …
