Multi-Scale Analysis Of Regional Inequality Based On Spatial Field Model: A Case Study Of China From 2000 To 2012, Shasha Lu, Xingliang Guan, Danlin Yu, Yu Deng, Linjie Zhou
Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
A large body of recent studies-from both inside and outside of China-are devoted to the understanding of China's regional inequality. The current study introduces "the spatial field model" to achieve comprehensive evaluation and multi-scale analysis of regional inequality. The model is based on the growth pole theory, regional interaction theory, and energy space theory. The spatial field is an abstract concept that defines the potential energy difference that is formed in the process of a regional growth pole driving the economic development of peripheral areas through transportation and communication corridors. The model is able to provide potentially more precise regional …

Attitudes And Perceptions Of Suicide And Suicide Prevention Messages For Asian Americans, Priyata Thapa, Yoonhee Sung, David A. Klingbeil, Chih-Yuan Lee, Bonnie Klimes-Dougan
Department of Family Science and Human Development Scholarship and Creative Works
Understanding the context of suicidal behaviors is critical for effective suicide prevention strategies. Although suicide is an important topic for Asian Americans, there is limited information about what Asian Americans' attitudes are towards suicide and their perceptions about the effectiveness of prevention efforts. These questions are critical to examine to provide foundational knowledge for determining how best to intervene. In this study, Asian American (n = 87) and White (n = 87) participants completed self-report indexes on their knowledge of depression and suicide (e.g., estimates of suicide rates), coping attitudes (e.g., help-seeking) and suicide prevention attitudes (e.g., usefulness of PSAs). …

More Than Movement – Ant Seed Dispersal Inhibits Phytopathogenic Fungi, Charlene H. Gray
More Than Movement – Ant Seed Dispersal Inhibits Phytopathogenic Fungi, Charlene H. Gray
Biology Theses
Seed dispersal by ants is a cosmopolitan mutualism involving thousands of plant species. Ants gain a food reward (elaiosomes) from the plant seed, and ant-mediated plants gain several presumed benefits, including dispersal away from parent plants and placement in 'safe site' microhabitat. Higher plant germination and survival in ant nest soils has been attributed to higher levels of nutrients, aeration, and soil moisture than surrounding soils, but evidence in support of these benefits is inconsistent. Ants secrete anti-microbial compounds that inhibit microbial pathogens. I explore the possibility that ants transfer anti-microbial properties to the soil they inhabit, and there is …
The Effect Of Warming And Simulated Rainfall On Soil Microbial Community Structure And Function, Torri A. Ivancic
The Effect Of Warming And Simulated Rainfall On Soil Microbial Community Structure And Function, Torri A. Ivancic
Biology Theses
Soil respiration, from plant roots and soil microbes, accounts for 60 – 80 percent of total ecosystem respiration, with the microbial component contributing approximately 54 percent. Global climate trends resulting from CO2 emissions include increased soil temperatures and changes in precipitation regimes resulting in less frequent, more intense rainfall events. Soil temperature and moisture availability drive soil respiration rates, but how they impact the microbial respiration is poorly qualified. I investigated how the soil microbial community responds to changes in temperature and moisture availability in a laboratory based experiment. Soils from a mixed hardwood forest under two thermal regimes …

We performed genetic analysis of Bartonella isolates from rodent populations from Heixiazi Island in northeast China. Animals were captured at four sites representing grassland and brushwood habitats in 2011 and examined for the prevalence and genetic diversity of Bartonella species, their relationship to their hosts, and geographic distribution. A high prevalence (57.7%) and a high diversity (14 unique genotypes which belonged to 8 clades) of Bartonella spp. were detected from 71 rodents comprising 5 species and 4 genera from 3 rodent families. Forty-one Bartonella isolates were recovered and identified, including B. taylorii, B. japonica, B. coopersplainsensis, B. grahamii, B. washoensis …

Improving Establishment Of Seeded Buffalograss, Luqi Li
Improving Establishment Of Seeded Buffalograss, Luqi Li
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Buffalograss [Buchloë dactyloides (Nutt.) Engelm.] is a warm-season grass native to the North American Great Plains. Buffalograss is drought resistant, heat resistant and cold tolerant, and thus is well-adapted to many uses in areas that require low maintenance or erosion control. Since buffalograss is slow-growing, one challenge of establishing seeded buffalograss is to maximize seedling maturation and establishment before winter. We evaluated dormant seeding buffalograss in late fall and winter, when germination is not expected until soils warm in spring. We successfully dormant seeded ‘Sundancer’, ‘Bowie’ or ‘Cody’ buffalograss at 146 kg ha-1 from late November though …

Hijacked: Parasitic Injection Of The Social Condenser Within The Contemporary City, Lara Moock
Architecture Thesis Prep
This thesis contends that the constructivist “social condenser” should be injected through the lens of the 21st century, capitalist city in order to reveal the interwoven collisions and hidden overlaps between the homeless and tech industry of San Francisco. The condenser will operate like a parasitic intervention by hijacking spaces along the spine of the city, heavily influenced by social and policy concerns, to formally and programmatically make these invisibilities between the two entities evident.
Animal Cities: Post-Human Urban Wildness, Jing Huang
Animal Cities: Post-Human Urban Wildness, Jing Huang
Architecture Thesis Prep
This thesis contends that architecture should be designed in a way to foster closer human-animal relationships. Cities are typically designed solely with the human in mind, and over time, animals have been pushed out of the city, decreasing biodiversity. Peoples’ tendency is to separate themselves and domesticate animals, resulting in sterile and tame urban centers. This is a result of the different attitudes humans have cultivated towards animals; dirty/clean, pleasant/annoying, useful/useless, harmless/dangerous, awe/disgust, etc., and utilizing architecture as means of filtering the presence of those that are beneficial to us, rendering animals as an afterthought. In a way, humans have …

The structure of China industrial company is quite different, because the company had many other related service only available to people who work there and their family, such as kindergarten, college, food factory, theatre, apartments and etc. That is the culture and social contents of a typical industrial company. It is also the characteristic of socialism of China. Like what Tschumi said, the social relevance and formal invention of architecture cannot be dissociate from the event that happen in it. It’s also related to what Cedric Price had done for the Fun Place that the architecture should be highly adaptable …

The Question Of Slim | A Critical Look At Manhattan's Recent Trend Towards Slenderness, Raymond Sova
The Question Of Slim | A Critical Look At Manhattan's Recent Trend Towards Slenderness, Raymond Sova
Architecture Senior Theses
Manhattan’s real estate market since the turn of the 20th century to present day can be characterized as an extreme optimization of the economical elements of architecture. Most of the buildings in Manhattan’s diverse and complex skyline share a tenacious desire to maximize the profitability and feasibility of a site while minimizing overall building expenditure. This concept is defined in Koolhaas’s ‘Delirious New York,’ as the relationship between “the Needle” and “the Globe.” Seemingly immeasurable wealth and investment have given rise to a new sub-typology of super-tall strikingly skinny (Slim) residential skyscrapers that may very well result in the demise …

Collaborations among schools and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are common in developing countries. These partnerships have the potential to provide effective support for educational initiatives. This study used survey methodology to determine characteristics of NGOs that increased effectiveness as determined by experienced principals (n=15) within a region of Belize. The survey used open-ended questions, and these responses were disaggregated in order to determine themes. These principals wrote that effective NGOs built strong relationships with the schools, aligned efforts with the school’s mission, and assisted with providing resources.

The Behavioral Impacts Of Property Tax Relief: Salience Or Framing?, Phuong Nguyen-Hoang, John Yinger
Center for Policy Research
New York State’s School Tax Relief Program, STAR, provides state-funded exemptions from school property taxes. From 2006-07 to 2008-09, these exemptions were supplemented with rebates, which arrived as a check in the mail. The purpose of this paper is to determine whether these two algebraically equivalent but administratively distinct policies of tax relief led to different behavioral responses. Drawing on behavioral economics, we explore the impact of STAR on the price elasticity of demand for school quality based on the concepts of salience and framing. Our main results are that the behavioral impact of the STAR provisions are larger (1) …
Revising International Law: A Liberal Account Of Natural Resources, Fernando R. Tesón
Revising International Law: A Liberal Account Of Natural Resources, Fernando R. Tesón
Scholarly Publications
In this Article, I defend the view that natural resources originally belong to individuals who have legitimately established private property claims over them. Natural resources do not belong to a collective entity such as the people or the state. My argument is simple. Relying on the Lockean contractarian tradition, I argue that individuals must delegate any resource controlled by the state. This is because all powers of the state are, morally, delegated powers. A group's claims over natural resources is entirely derivative of the original claims of its members. Only individuals can originally appropriate natural resources; only they have the …

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) from a human sample collected during the 2005 Chikungunya outbreak in the Comoros Island, showed distinct and reproducible large (L2) and small (S7) plaques which were characterized in this study. The parent strain and plaque variants were analysed by in vitro growth kinetics in different cell lines and their genetic similarity assessed by whole genome sequencing, comparative sequence alignment and phylogenetic analysis. In vitro growth kinetic assays showed similar growth patterns of both plaque variants in Vero cells but higher viral titres of S7 compared to L2 in C6/36 cells. Amino acids (AA) alignments of the CHIKV …

Maize is the main staple crop in the East African Mountains. Understanding how the edaphic characteristics change along altitudinal gradients is important for maximizing maize production in East African Highlands, which are the key maize production areas in the region. This study evaluated and compared the levels of some macro and micro-elements (Al, Ca, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na and P) and other soil parameters (pH, organic carbon content, soil texture [i.e. % Sand, % Clay and % Silt], cation exchange capacity [CEC], electric conductivity [EC], and water holding capacity [HC]). Soil samples were taken from maize plots along three …

An improvement of the Davydov's model for energy transfer in α-helix protein is proposed. Using hyperbolic cosine potential type to model hydrogen bond potential, we have obtained from the adiabatic approximation, a discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation with inverse hyperbolic sine nonlinearity. Using the two-dimensional discrete map approach, we have found a linearly stable intrinsic localized mode of the corresponding developed equation. Mobility of the intrinsic localized mode was achieved by moving the local impurity hypothesized as the anomalous band energy. The reactivity of the discrete breather under thermal noise was studied numerically with the Langevin's approach. It was shown that …
