Cerebellar Dopaminergic Signaling In The Dorsomedial Striatum Of Fragile-X Mice: Significance To Autism Spectrum Disorders, Zade Ramses Holloway Dec 2015

Cerebellar Dopaminergic Signaling In The Dorsomedial Striatum Of Fragile-X Mice: Significance To Autism Spectrum Disorders, Zade Ramses Holloway

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are characterized by motor impairments and deficits in social communication potentially stemming from cerebellar Purkinje cell loss and dysfunction. Recent mapping of glutamatergic and dopaminergic pathways has provided evidence that degeneration of Purkinje cells coincides with attenuated dopamine (DA) release in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) via the cerebello-thalamo-PFCpathway. As patients with ASD exhibit repetitive behavior, abnormal reward processing, and lack of planning ability, it appears the effects of neuropathology in the cerebellum extend to the nigrostriatal pathway. Using fixed-potential amperometry and electrical stimulation of cerebellar nuclei, we investigated the possibility that the cerebellum modulates DA …

Treatise On Seismicity And Velocity Structure Of The Northern Mississippi Embayment, Akramalsadat Mostafanejad Dec 2015

Treatise On Seismicity And Velocity Structure Of The Northern Mississippi Embayment, Akramalsadat Mostafanejad

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Seismicity of the New Madrid seismic zone, velocity structure of the northern Mississippi Embayment and extent of lithospheric discontinuities have been investigated in this work. Spatial variations of seismic b-value in the NMSZ have been determined. A region of high b-value (b~1.8) in the northern segment of the Reelfoot fault has been found which reflects higher frequency in the occurrence rate of small earthquakes. This is attributed to fault creep in a medium with high silica content, high pore fluid pressure and extensive velocity heterogeneity. In another study, power spectral ratios of horizontal to vertical (H/V) and vertical to horizontal …

The Memphis City Schools (MCS) and Shelby County Schools (SCS) completed an historical merger July1, 2013. Memphis City School system was a large urban school district and the legacy Shelby County School system was a smaller, mainly suburban school system. The Memphis City School Board surrendered their charter in December of 2010 stating the merger process. Guiding the merger process, the Tennessee Senate approved Tennessee Public Chapter 1 on March 10, 2011 creating a 21-member Transition Planning Commission (TPC). The TPC was charged with creating a transition plan to submit to the Shelby County Board for approval. The Superintendents of …

ProblemImmune changes occur during pregnancy, including a bias towards Th2 responses. This study explored maternal DNA methylation (DNA-M) of Th1, Th2, Th17, and Treg pathway genes before and during pregnancy.MethodsBlood DNA-M was measured in 54 women at age 18, and again in the first (weeks 8-21, n=39) and second (weeks 22-38, n=35) halves of pregnancy. Cytosine-phosphate-guanine (CpG) sites in genes of the T cell pathways were compared to random samples of CpGs, contrasting non-pregnancy with first and second halves of gestation using mixed linear models.ResultsMore CpGs within the Th2 pathway (35%) changed significantly compared to randomly selected CpGs (24%) in …

Profiles Of Identity And Comorbid Obesity-Hypertension: Investigating The Relation Amongst Adult African Americans, Courtney Maclin Dec 2015

Profiles Of Identity And Comorbid Obesity-Hypertension: Investigating The Relation Amongst Adult African Americans, Courtney Maclin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

African Americans are at an increased risk of comorbid obesity-hypertension. This study examined the disparity through the lens of identity based-motivation theory. A latent profile analysis was conducted, to explicate the within group diversity of African American identity endorsement, distinguishing two classes based of racial group closeness; high closeness and moderate closeness. The findings suggest that identity, particularly moderate closeness, was significantly predictive of comorbid obesity-hypertension, both directly as well as indirectly through activity engagement. Socioeconomic status, however did not moderate the relation. We conclude that investigations of identity are particularly relevant to conceptualizing predictors of comorbid obesity-hypertension for African …

The Pink Toolbox: A Narrative Examination Of The Theory Of Emotional Labor And Its Potential Nexus With Female Adult Learners Preparing For Nontraditional Occupations, Jeffery Lane Sisk

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Both societal and institutional barriers exist that keep females from fully participating in all aspects of the job market, including preparatory training. This is particularly true for jobs that are considered nontraditional for women, including: welding, machine tool, automotive mechanics, and aircraft maintenance. These types of jobs typically have higher wages and better benefits than other jobs. This narrative study focused on the experiences of nine female adult learners enrolled in postsecondary training programs preparing them for careers in nontraditional occupations. Utilizing a narrative inquiry methodology, the purpose of this study was to understand how female adult learners enrolled in …

Pore-Pressure Diffusion Based On Analysis And Characterization Of Microseismicity In Central Arkansas, Paul Otieno Ogwari Dec 2015

Pore-Pressure Diffusion Based On Analysis And Characterization Of Microseismicity In Central Arkansas, Paul Otieno Ogwari

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Part 1:Between August 2010 and June 2011, an intense sequence of induced earthquakes occurred along the Guy-Greenbrier fault in central Arkansas due to fluid injection at nearby waste disposal wells. A previous study by Horton (2010) limited to ~1,000 earthquakes having md > ~2.0 illuminated the ~13km fault. We present an updated catalogue of 17,395 earthquakes that appears complete between 0 <= ml <= 4.4 for the initial part of the sequence between August 2010 and October 20, 2010 located using an updated 1D velocity model for the region. The inclusion of the small magnitude events reveals that seismicity starts below the SRE injection well a month earlier than estimated using only md >2 events. During this period of time, the seismicity migrated from north to south enhancing the resolution of three joined sections that form the northern ~7.3km portion of the fault, which plunges southwards. The seismogenic zone covers the lower portion …

Turnover intention of information technology (IT) professionals and IT users has been a topic of interest to both academics and industry in recent years; job demands such as excessive workload, work exhaustion, relentless deadlines, role conflict and role ambiguity have all been found to affect turnover intention of IT professionals and IT users. Yet, researchers have paid little attention to the influence of job resources and personal resources. The purpose of this research, presented in the form of two essays, is to explore the effect of those influences on turnover intention of IT professionals and IT users.Using job demand-resource theory, …

Why Do The Children Flee? Public Security And Policing Practices In Central America, Mary Fran T. Malone Dec 2015

Why Do The Children Flee? Public Security And Policing Practices In Central America, Mary Fran T. Malone

Carsey Publications

In this brief, author Mary Fran Malone discusses the security crisis in Central America and successful policing strategies for confronting this crisis. She reports that Central Americans’ experiences and perceptions of crime are linked to an increased likelihood of migration. In 2014, approximately 57,000 unaccompanied minors traveled from Central America to Mexico, continuing north to cross the U.S. border illegally. The large numbers of people fleeing Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras testify not only to the violence of illicit markets but also to the failure of these countries’ governments to fulfill their most important task—protecting the lives of their citizens. …

Six Degrees Of Separation: Attribution Under The Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act In Obb Personenverkehr Ag V. Sachs, Daniel R. Echeverri

Duke Journal of Constitutional Law & Public Policy Sidebar

The Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act (FSIA) generally prevents foreign sovereigns from falling within the jurisdiction of U.S. courts, subject to exceptions the FSIA lists. This commentary analyzes BB Personenverkehr AG v. Sachs, a case before the Supreme Court on the question of whether the commercial activities exception of the FSIA applies when only one element of a plaintiff's claim is based upon commercial activity occurring in the United States and whether that sale can be attributed to a foreign sovereign. In this case, the plaintiff purchased a rail pass through an online, third-party travel agent. While traveling abroad and …

X-Men, Dragon Age, And Religion: Representations Of Religion And The Religious In Comic Books, Video Games, And Their Related Media, Lyndsey E. Shelton Dec 2015

X-Men, Dragon Age, And Religion: Representations Of Religion And The Religious In Comic Books, Video Games, And Their Related Media, Lyndsey E. Shelton

Honors College Theses

It is a widely accepted notion that a child can only be called stupid for so long before they believe it, can only be treated in a particular way for so long before that is the only way that they know. Why is that notion never applied to how we treat, address, and present religion and the religious to children and young adults? In recent years, questions have been continuously brought up about how we portray violence, sexuality, gender, race, and many other issues in popular media directed towards young people, particularly video games. These issues rarely include religion, despite …

Understanding Emotion In Relation To Drinking Motivation, Melissa C. Hinely Dec 2015

Understanding Emotion In Relation To Drinking Motivation, Melissa C. Hinely

Honors College Theses

Recent research has uncovered the interactions between implicit alcohol motivations and drinking behaviors after emotion inductions (Ostafin & Brooks, 2011). However, little research has supplemented such findings. This longitudinal two-part study examined the impact of a personalized emotion induction on implicit alcohol-related associations in a college sample enrolled at southern university. 215 participants were randomly assigned to one of three emotion-induction conditions (negative, neutral, or positive). During phase I, participants completed a baseline Implicit Association Tests (IAT; Greenwald et al., 1998) to assess implicit alcohol-related cognitions related to valence and motivation. Based on condition, participants were also asked to describe …

The Effects Of Size And Principal Axis Difference Ratio On The Use Of Featural And Geometric Cues, Spencer J. Price Dec 2015

The Effects Of Size And Principal Axis Difference Ratio On The Use Of Featural And Geometric Cues, Spencer J. Price

Honors College Theses

Enclosure size has been shown to affect an animal’s reliance on featural and geometric cues when reorienting in space. Previous research has shown that humans and animals rely primarily on geometric cues in smaller enclosures, and on featural cues in larger enclosures. The multiple-bearings hypothesis predicts that directional information is more discriminable than distance information when landmarks are father away from a goal. As the size of the environment increased, the distance information was less discernible than featural information. In the current study, we tested to see if the reliance on geometry changes across enclosure size. Three different Principal Axis …

Color Me, Please: How Color-Emotion Pairs Affect Our Perceptions, Russell T. Rogers Dec 2015

Color Me, Please: How Color-Emotion Pairs Affect Our Perceptions, Russell T. Rogers

Honors College Theses

Color-emotion pairings are part of everyday experience, and they develop in early childhood. Emotional experiences are typically much stronger when emotional stimuli (e.g., pictures or videos) are paired with sensory stimuli (e.g., sights or sounds). Since the presence of these sensory stimuli seems to heighten the emotional experience of emotion-evoking visual stimuli, it should be the case that such pairings will allow the manipulation of color-emotion pairings through the presence of a color (a visual stimulus) during an emotional situation (such as watching a video). In this study (N = 44), we paired both a positive and negative video …

The Validity Of The Environmental Kuznets Curve For The European Union, Connor L. Kasten Dec 2015

The Validity Of The Environmental Kuznets Curve For The European Union, Connor L. Kasten

Honors College Theses

This research empirically explores the validity of the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) for the European Union. Data for CO2 emission per capita, GDP per capita, population density, and fossil fuel consumption percentage was gathered for the 28 countries within the European Union for years 1990-2010 and regression analysis was conducted in order to see if the EKC relationship held true. However, under this analysis, that result is inconclusive. As GDP per capita increases, CO2 increases to a certain point and then, instead of having a negative relationship, it continues to increase but at a lesser rate. The coefficients …

South Korea's Transition From K-Gaap To Ifrs, Rebecca Henderson Dec 2015

South Korea's Transition From K-Gaap To Ifrs, Rebecca Henderson

Honors College Theses

The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between South Korean culture and the transition from Korean Generally Accepted Accounting Principles to Korean International Financial Reporting Standards. It is suspected that the hierarchical structure of Korean society and culture has allowed Korea to make one of the fastest accounting standards transitions in recent years. This possible correlation is examined through the use of a survey of current accounting students in Daegu, South Korea.

Making Sense Of The Distrust Of The Chinese Government In Light Of China’S Successes In Economic Modernization, Rachel L. Neuhauser Dec 2015

Making Sense Of The Distrust Of The Chinese Government In Light Of China’S Successes In Economic Modernization, Rachel L. Neuhauser

Honors College Theses

This paper explores the contrast of China’s spectacular economic development and the low scores of trust for the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) legitimacy among the Chinese people. The sharp contrast may reflect flaws in the shaping of de facto authority of the Chinese government. The de facto authority is examined in connection to the notion of the Mandate of Heaven from the Confucian tradition. The severe imbalance of economic growth and lack of political reform is discussed against the backgrounds of the domestic and international political circumstances. This paper argues that, in spite of the phenomenal economic development of the …
