Elvis And Those Who (Still) Love Him, David Wharton
Elvis And Those Who (Still) Love Him, David Wharton
Study the South
Every year, in the middle of August, people travel from throughout the world to gather in Memphis, Tennessee. The focus of their pilgrimage is the long-dead Elvis Presley. The occasion is the anniversary of his death, which occurred on August 16, 1977. In the days leading up to the annual “Death Day,” venues all over Memphis host Elvis-themed events, visitors pack the city’s hotels, restaurants, and bars, and the gathered faithful renew friendships begun during previous Elvis Weeks, some of them decades in the past. The week culminates on the 16th in front of Graceland (Elvis’s Memphis home) at 3764 …

You Cannot Afford Not To Understand Me: Adhd As Difference, Not Disability, Lucia Guarino, Whitney Rapp
You Cannot Afford Not To Understand Me: Adhd As Difference, Not Disability, Lucia Guarino, Whitney Rapp
Education Faculty/Staff Publications
Support for children with ADHD/ADD has grown in recent years in an effort to help them become more planful, organized and focused, like their logical-sequential peers. Personal experiences are shared to challenge this as a goal worth pursuing and to illustrate the harm that results from attempts to replace perceived weaknesses and disability with socially-constructed strengths. Ways to celebrate and nurture all minds are shared.
As a result of this presentation, participants will:
1. Identify the characteristics of students who are labeled as ADHD/ADD; the characteristics of logical-sequential processing; and explain that the value placed on one set of these …

Comparing Rapid Scene Categorization Of Aerial And Terrestrial Views: A New Perspective On Scene Gist, Lester C. Loschky, Ryan V. Ringer, Katrina Ellis, Bruce C. Hansen
Psychology Faculty Publications
Scene gist, a viewer's holistic representation of a scene from a single eye fixation, has been extensively studied for terrestrial views, but not for aerial views. We compared rapid scene categorization of both views in three experiments to determine the degree to which diagnostic information is view dependent versus view independent. We found large differences in observers' ability to rapidly categorize aerial and terrestrial scene views, consistent with the idea that scene gist recognition is viewpoint dependent. In addition, computational modeling showed that training models on one view (aerial or terrestrial) led to poor performance on the other view, thereby …

Effects Of Acceptance Of Disability On Death Or Dialysis In Chronic Kidney Disease Patients: A 3-Year Prospective Cohort Study, Hsin-Hung Chiang, Hanoch Livneh, How-Ran Guo, Mei-Ling Yen, Tzung-Yi Tsai
Counselor Education Faculty Publications and Presentations
Background: Acceptance of disability (AOD) is a useful construct that assesses the ability of a patient to psychologically cope with chronic diseases, but its effect on long-term outcomes of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the relation between AOD level and clinical outcomes in a cohort of CKD patients in Taiwan.
Methods: 262 CKD patients without dialysis at a hospital in Taiwan were consecutively recruited, from 2010 to 2011, and followed up for 3 years. At enrollment, demographic and clinical data were obtained, including baseline level measurement of AOD, using the …

Comparison Theorems And Asymptotic Behavior Of Solutions Of Discrete Fractional Equations, Baoguo Jia, Lynn Erbe, Allan Peterson
Comparison Theorems And Asymptotic Behavior Of Solutions Of Discrete Fractional Equations, Baoguo Jia, Lynn Erbe, Allan Peterson
Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications
Consider the following n-th order nabla and delta fractional difference equations
rn r (a)x(t) = c(t)x(t), t 2 Na+1, x(a) > 0.
and
Va+v-1x(t) = c(t)x(t + v - 1), t 2 Na, x(a + n - 1) > 0
We establish comparison theorems by which we compare the solutions x(t) of (*) and (**) with the solutions of the equations rn r(a)x(t) = bx(t) and Dn a+v-1x(t) = bx(t + v -1), respectively, where b is a constant. We obtain four asymptotic results, one of them extends the recent result [F. M. Atici, P. W. Eloe, Rocky Mountain J. Math. 41(2011), …

A Depiction Of Women In Tennessee With Low Literacy Skills And Their Access To Higher Education And Employment, Rebecca Puig
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This phase one study was conducted using qualitative research methods in order to describe to policymakers and local literacy program experts more completely the current challenges and needs some adult women in Tennessee with low-literacy skills face when pursing higher education or a professional career. In turn, such information can assist them in better identifying appropriate resources and interventions to serve these women.
Data were collected through a cross-case analysis of two individual case studies and five interviews with three adult learners and two literacy program experts. Artifacts (e.g., flyers) were also collected, but provided no substantial contribution to the …

Satureja biflora, known as "lemon savory", grows widely in Southern and Eastern parts of Africa. The plant has been used in Kenyan and Tanzanian traditional medicine as an antimicrobial, spasmolytic, diuretic, analgesic, and cicatrizing herb. Except for the composition of the essential oil no phytochemical data have been reported. Phytochemical profiling of the methanolic extract by a combination of chromatographic methods afforded nine phenolic compounds. Their structures were established by means of extensive 1D- and 2D-NMR, HRESI-MS, and electronic circular dichroism (ECD). One new and eight known natural products were isolated and identified, namely luteolin 7- O-β- d-glucuronide (1), 2″-caffeoyl-luteolin …

Tracking Location Dependent Advertising Conversions, Senthil Kumar Hariramasamy, Lakshmi Kumar Dabbiru
Defensive Publications Series
An ad conversion system proposes a new type of conversion technique. This technique tracks change conversions such as home and job changes which occurred as a result of advertisements (ads) searched. The system receives a search query from a user at a predetermined location for the user. In response to this search query, the system provides ads to the user. Thereafter, the system can receive a user interaction with one of the ads displayed to the user. After receiving this interaction, the system identifies a change in the predetermined location for the user. Subsequently, the system determines a conversion for …

Streaming Audio And Media At Different Electronic Devices, Alexander James Faaborg
Defensive Publications Series
A content streaming system can be used for streaming audio and video of a multimedia content at different electronic devices. The content streaming system receives an instruction to play video of a multimedia content at a first electronic device. The system then determines whether to play audio of the multimedia content at a second electronic device which is capable of audio output. Accordingly, the system streams the audio of the multimedia content to the second electronic device and the video of the multimedia content to the first electronic device.

Bully Or Dupe?: Governor Chris Christie’S Image Repair On The Bridge Lane Closure Scandal, William L. Benoit
Speaker & Gavel
In 2013, two lanes leading to the George Washington Bridge – the busiest in the nation – in Fort Lee, NJ, were closed. In January of 2014, it emerged that Christie’s Deputy Chief of Staff Kelley instigated this problem. Governor Christie was accused of retaliating against Fort Lee’s Mayor Mark Sokolich, who had not endorsed Christie’s re-election bid. Christie fired Kelley, held a press conference, and apologized to Sokolich and the people of Fort Lee. Christie’s primary strategies were mortification and corrective action, but he also used denial, differentiation, minimization, and defeasibility to deal with this situation. Minimization was interesting …
Foreign Policy Rhetoric In The 1992 Presidential Campaign: Bill Clinton’S Exceptionalist Jeremiad, Jason A. Edwards
Foreign Policy Rhetoric In The 1992 Presidential Campaign: Bill Clinton’S Exceptionalist Jeremiad, Jason A. Edwards
Speaker & Gavel
This essay examines presidential candidate Bill Clinton’s rhetoric regarding America’s role in the world during the 1992 presidential campaign. Despite the fact that foreign policy was George H.W. Bush’s strength during the campaign, candidate Clinton was able to develop a coherent vision for America’s role in the world that he carried into his presidency. I argue he did so by fusing together the American exceptionalist missions of exemplar and intervention. In doing so, Clinton altered a tension embedded in debates over U.S. foreign policy rhetoric. To further differentiate his candidacy from President Bush, Clinton encased this discourse within a secular …
