Augmenting The Immersed Boundary Method With Radial Basis Functions (Rbfs) For The Modeling Of Platelets In Hemodynamic Flows, Varun Shankar, Grady B. Wright, Robert M. Kirby, Aaron L. Fogelson
Mathematics Faculty Publications and Presentations
We present a new computational method by extending the Immersed Boundary (IB) method with a geometric model based on parametric Radial Basis Function (RBF) interpolation of the Lagrangian structures. Our specific motivation is the modeling of platelets in hemodynamic flows, though we anticipate that our method will be useful in other applications involving surface elasticity. The efficacy of our new RBF-IB method is shown through a series of numerical experiments. Specifically, we test the convergence of our method and compare our method with the traditional IB method in terms of computational cost, maximum stable time-step size and volume loss. We …

Multiplayer Sound-Oriented Game Design: An Ios Brain And Hearing Training Game, Liwei Yu
Theses
Hearing (auditory perception) is one of the most important senses in our human bodies. There are millions of different sounds in our world; humans perceive the sounds from the outside world to get information, and respond to them.
It is beneficial to enhance hearing abilities and hand-ear coordination to boost brain fitness, engage in better communication with others, and enhance concentration abilities.
With the fast development of smart mobile devices and mobile internet, it is easy to get people connected no matter where they are. Some people usually play games during short fragments time.
Considering these factors, it is a …

Ballantyne, R. C. Hickox, A. Del-Moro, R. C. Hickox, G. B. Lansbury, J. R. Mullaney, F. E. Bauer, W. N. Brandt
Dartmouth Scholarship
We present the first direct measurements of the rest-frame 10–40 keV X-ray luminosity function (XLF) of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) based on a sample of 94 sources at 0.1 < z < 3, selected at 8–24 keV energies from sources in the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) extragalactic survey program. Our results are consistent with the strong evolution of the AGN population seen in prior, lower-energy studies of the XLF. However, different models of the intrinsic distribution of absorption, which are used to correct for selection biases, give significantly different predictions for the total number of sources in our sample, leading to small, systematic differences in our binned estimates of …
Perfectionism And Job Burnout: Does Religious Coping Moderate The Relationship?, Sahar Mohamed Badawy, Mohamad Saad Mohamad Prof.
Perfectionism And Job Burnout: Does Religious Coping Moderate The Relationship?, Sahar Mohamed Badawy, Mohamad Saad Mohamad Prof.
Business Administration
This study aimed at investigating the relationship between perfectionism and burnout. Moreover, the moderating effect of religious coping in this relationship was also investigated. The sample of the current study consisted of 210 physicians, with a reasonable mix of demographic characteristics, working in public and private health institutions in the greater Cairo Area. The data were obtained using a structured questionnaire to assess perfectionistic striving, perfectionistic concerns, religious coping and the three dimensions of job burnout, namely, emotional exhaustion, cynicism, and feelings of inefficacy. Significant correlations were obtained between perfectionism and burnout dimensions. However, the moderating effect of religious coping …

Cooling Atomic Gases With Disorder, Thereza Paiva, Ehsan Khatami, Shuxiang Yang, Valéry Rousseau, Mark Jarrell, Juana Moreno, Randall G. Hulet, Richard T. Scalettar
Faculty Publications
Cold atomic gases have proven capable of emulating a number of fundamental condensed matter phenomena including Bose-Einstein condensation, the Mott transition, Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov pairing, and the quantum Hall effect. Cooling to a low enough temperature to explore magnetism and exotic superconductivity in lattices of fermionic atoms remains a challenge. We propose a method to produce a low temperature gas by preparing it in a disordered potential and following a constant entropy trajectory to deliver the gas into a nondisordered state which exhibits these incompletely understood phases. We show, using quantum Monte Carlo simulations, that we can approach the Néel temperature of …

New Ultraviolet Extinction Curves For Interstellar Dust In M31, Geoffrey C. Clayton, Karl D. Gordon, Luciana C. Bianchi, Derck L. Massa, Edward L. Fitzpatrick, R. C. Bohlin, Michael J. Wolff
Faculty Publications
New low-resolution UV spectra of a sample of reddened OB stars in M31 were obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope/STIS to study the wavelength dependence of interstellar extinction and the nature of the underlying dust grain populations. Extinction curves were constructed for four reddened sightlines in M31 paired with closely matching stellar atmosphere models. The new curves have a much higher signal-to-noise ratio than previous studies. Direct measurements of N(H i) were made using the Lyα absorption lines enabling gas-to-dust ratios to be calculated. The sightlines have a range in galactocentric distance of 5-14 kpc and represent dust from regions …

Student Research – Stevenson Center
Working with a local reentry organization, Labyrinth Outreach Services to Women, the purpose of this study was to gather information about opportunities and barriers related to two aspects of their program: employment services and establishment of a microbusiness. Information was obtained through a 22-item questionnaire given to a sample of local businesses, key informant interviews, and secondary data analysis. Thirty-nine businesses in the Bloomington-Normal area responded to the questionnaire via on-line and paper survey methods, nine face-to-face interviews were conducted, along with three case studies of similar reentry microbusiness programs and a review of current literature. Stigmas of formerly incarcerated …

Time To Career: Science And Engineering Education To Career Trajectories, Angie Nim Choi
Theses and Dissertations
Two waves of data from the 2006 and 2008 Survey of Earned Doctorates and Survey of Doctorate Recipients were used in this study to investigate time to doctorate (TTD) and time to career (TTC) for science and engineering PhDs. Three-way factorial ANOVAs were conducted, and TTD results indicated main effects for gender, US citizenship, and Biglan classification, and interaction effects for gender and US citizenship. US citizen PhDs progressed to their career approximately one mean year faster than foreign PhDs. For TTC, PhDs who held postdocs progressed to their careers in 14 and 15 years for females and males respectively …

Generating Partially Coherent Schell-Model Sources Using A Modified Phase Screen Approach, Milo W. Hyde Iv, Santasri Basu, David G. Voelz, Xifeng Xiao
Faculty Publications
A significant improvement to the recently introduced complex screen (CS) method for generating partially coherent Schell-model sources is presented. The method, called the modified phase screen (MPS) technique, applies a deterministic amplitude and the phase portion of a CS to an initially coherent light source using a single phase-only spatial light modulator. The MPS technique, unlike the CS approach from which it is derived, does not produce a fully developed speckle pattern in the source plane, and therefore converges faster and more uniformly to the desired partially coherent source. The analytical development of the MPS method is presented. Experimental results …

BACKGROUND: Nitrates are commonly prescribed to enhance activity tolerance in patients with heart failure and a preserved ejection fraction. We compared the effect of isosorbide mononitrate or placebo on daily activity in such patients.
METHODS: In this multicenter, double-blind, crossover study, 110 patients with heart failure and a preserved ejection fraction were randomly assigned to a 6-week dose-escalation regimen of isosorbide mononitrate (from 30 mg to 60 mg to 120 mg once daily) or placebo, with subsequent crossover to the other group for 6 weeks. The primary end point was the daily activity level, quantified as the average daily accelerometer …
