Lending A Megaphone To The Muted: The Merits Of Comprehensive Conflict Engagement Through Photovoice In Refugee Resettlement Communities, Birthe C. Reimers Dec 2015

Lending A Megaphone To The Muted: The Merits Of Comprehensive Conflict Engagement Through Photovoice In Refugee Resettlement Communities, Birthe C. Reimers

Doctor of International Conflict Management Dissertations

Local refugee resettlement sites are often overlooked as hotspots of conflict because of the unstated assumption that resettlement and escape from militarized conflict automatically mean peace. However, refugees are resettled in local communities into which old conflicts are imported, and where new ones emerge as refugees and locals need to find ways of coexisting despite cultural differences. This research was developed in response to calls by the US Office of Refugee Resettlement and the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations for grassroots-level data on the challenges faced by residents of resettlement communities and for the development of strategies for promoting …

Recursive Model Selection For Gnss-Combined Precise Point Positioning Algorithms, Andrew Tollefson Dec 2015

Recursive Model Selection For Gnss-Combined Precise Point Positioning Algorithms, Andrew Tollefson

Theses

The accuracy of Global Positioning algorithms can be improved by incorporating observations from the satellites of multiple Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS). To best utilize these observations, inter-system biases must be modeled. A unified observational model is proposed which accounts for these factors for an arbitrary number of GNSS. The Bayesian Information Criterion (BIC) may be imposed upon the unified model to balance data-fitting degree with model complexity among candidate models for a given satellite configuration scenario. A simple formulation is derived for the change to the Weighted Sum Squared Residuals (WSSR) outcome caused by modifying the least-squares design matrix …

Natural Vs. Anthropogenic Sedimentation: Does Reducing A Local Stressor Increase Coral Resilience To Climate Change?, Francesca Fourney Dec 2015

Natural Vs. Anthropogenic Sedimentation: Does Reducing A Local Stressor Increase Coral Resilience To Climate Change?, Francesca Fourney

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Corals face serious worldwide population declines due to global climate change in combination with direct anthropogenic impacts. Global climate change is difficult to manage locally, but policy makers can regulate the magnitude of local stressors affecting reefs. The objective of this experiment is to investigate if reducing sedimentation will enable reef corals to better endure global climate change. It has been shown that some coral species can handle climate change stress when provided with additional energy resources. Here I tested if the capacity of corals to cope with climate change can be improved when their ability to feed and photosynthesize …

The flux-integrated CCQE cross section was measured to be «σ

Exact Solutions Of An Extended Bose-Hubbard Model With E 2 Symmetry, Feng Pan, Ningyun Zhang, Qianyun Wang, J. P. Draayer Dec 2015

Exact Solutions Of An Extended Bose-Hubbard Model With E 2 Symmetry, Feng Pan, Ningyun Zhang, Qianyun Wang, J. P. Draayer

Faculty Publications

An extended Bose-Hubbard (BH) model with number-dependent multi-site and infinite-range hopping is proposed, which, similar to the original BH model, describes a phase transition between the delocalized superfluid (SF) phase and localized Mott insulator (MI) phase. It is shown that this extended model with local Euclidean E2 symmetry is exactly solvable when on-site local potentials are included, while the model without local potentials is quasi-exactly solvable, which means only a part of the excited states including the ground state being exactly solvable. As applications of the exact solution for the ground state, phase diagram of the model in 1D without …

Use Of Satellite Soil Moisture To Estimate Soil Strength And Ground Vehicle Mobility, Maria T. Stevens Dec 2015

Use Of Satellite Soil Moisture To Estimate Soil Strength And Ground Vehicle Mobility, Maria T. Stevens

Theses and Dissertations

Soil moisture is a key variable in off-road mobility. Mobility analysis was conducted based on three soil moisture sources: WindSat (a satellite), LIS (a computer model), and in situ ground sensors (assumed to represent ground truth). Mobility of six vehicles, each with different ranges of sensitivity to soil moisture, was examined in three test sites. Two methods were used: a simplified method based on time series and a fulleatured terrain method. The results demonstrated that the effect of the soil moisture error on mobility predictions is complex and may produce very significant errors in mobility analysis for certain combinations of …

Simulation Of The Erdc Blast Load Simulator (Bls) In Various Test Configurations Using Loci/Blast, Clayton T. Mord Dec 2015

Simulation Of The Erdc Blast Load Simulator (Bls) In Various Test Configurations Using Loci/Blast, Clayton T. Mord

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis describes the simulation of ERDC’s Blast Load Simulator (BLS) using MSU’s Loci/BLAST. The BLS was created to replicate waveforms found in blast scenarios. Loci/BLAST is an explicit, unstructured CFD code that specializes in moving waveforms. ERDC conducted various tests, and a grid for each scenario was created using the SolidMesh tool. Each grid was simulated, and the results were displayed as time history plots and spatial plots. Simulations were also performed that compared 2D and 3D grids and determined the effect of the grate and striker components. There was a strong correlation between the experimental and simulation results …

Multichannel Analysis Of Surface Waves Using Distributed Fiber Optic Sensors, Gustavo Galan-Comas Dec 2015

Multichannel Analysis Of Surface Waves Using Distributed Fiber Optic Sensors, Gustavo Galan-Comas

Theses and Dissertations

The Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW) method traditionally uses an array of collinear vertical geophones to measure seismic wave propagation velocity at discrete points along the ground surface. Distributed fiber optic sensors (FOS) measure the average longitudinal strain over discrete lengths (i.e., zones) of a buried fiber optic cable. Such strain measurements can be used to assess ground motion and thus analyzed with the MASW method. To evaluate the feasibility of using FOS strain measurements in the MASW method, field experiments were conducted with both FOS and surface vertical geophones. Synthetic seismograms were also used to compare FOS to …

Kindergarten Literacy Remediation For Low Socioeconomic And Ell Students Without Preschool Experiences, Jillian Leedock

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

By the end of the first quarter all kindergarten students will learn to identify all 52 uppercase and lowercase letters of the alphabet. They will also be able to identify all 26 letter sounds and learn to read, these are benchmarks set by schools. Nevertheless, most English Language Learners (ELL) students that enter the elementary school system at age 5 do not recognize any English alphabet letters or letter sounds. Some children know the alphabet in their native language, which makes the learning process easier because there already is a literacy base and understanding, but some children come to school …

Development Of White Crappie Pomoxis Annularis Reproduction Methods In Closed Aquaculture Systems, Charlie Marcus Culpepper Dec 2015

Development Of White Crappie Pomoxis Annularis Reproduction Methods In Closed Aquaculture Systems, Charlie Marcus Culpepper

Theses and Dissertations

Aquaculture methods are limited for white crappie (Pomoxis annularis), reducing production potential. Therefore, reproduction methods, including induced spawning, sperm cryopreservation and out-of-season spawning, were developed in tank systems. A two week acclimation period (15°C; 3-5 ppt salinity) was necessary to reduce disease-related mortality. Afterwards, four spawning induction hormones and a control were examined to induce spawning. Luteinizing hormone releasing hormone analogue and salmonid gonadotropin releasing hormone analogue performed the best in terms of spawning success and %ertilization. Sperm cryopreservation was effective using Hanks or Ca2+ree Hanks balanced salt solutions with 10%-methanol or 5%-dimethyl-sulfoxide as a cryoprotectant, frozen at 40°C/min. Out-of-season …
