Evaluation Of Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Interconnect Coatings: Mechanisms Behind Structure And Property Change During Reaction Layer Formation, Louis V. Gambino Dec 2015

Evaluation Of Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Interconnect Coatings: Mechanisms Behind Structure And Property Change During Reaction Layer Formation, Louis V. Gambino

Doctoral Dissertations

Modern solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) operate at sufficiently low temperatures to allow the use of alloy interconnects in the SOFC stacks. The alloys used are cheaper, more formable, and more conductive than the traditional ceramic materials used for interconnects. However, the long term SOFC performance is limited by oxidation of the alloy interconnect. To ameliorate the issues which result from oxidation, manganese cobaltite spinel coatings are typically applied.

The microstructural effects of the reduction step in the reactive consolidation of slurry processed Mn1.5Co1.5O4 (MCO) coated Crofer 22 APU were studied. The reduced coating contained particles of MnO with the …

Maternal Predictors Of School Readiness Among At-Risk Head Start Preschool Children, Rachel Chase Dec 2015

Maternal Predictors Of School Readiness Among At-Risk Head Start Preschool Children, Rachel Chase

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Preschool has been identified as a critical period during which children who are at-risk for school difficulties are most responsive to intervention (National Institute of Mental Health, 2002; National Research Council & Institute of Medicine, 2001). Because of this, school readiness has recently become a prioritized area of interest for the educational system, the health care industry, and the federal government. However, many efforts to comprehensively prepare a child to begin school have not been successful because factors beyond the educational system (e.g., parenting/parent attributes, environmental stressors, and other demographic characteristics) have not been closely considered nor adequately researched. Therefore, …

How Can Participatory Social Network Analysis Contribute To Community-Led Natural Resources Management?: A Case Study From Bua Province, Fiji Islands, Brook. M. Mcdavid Dec 2015

How Can Participatory Social Network Analysis Contribute To Community-Led Natural Resources Management?: A Case Study From Bua Province, Fiji Islands, Brook. M. Mcdavid

Natural Resources

Adaptive co-management of natural resources requires a variety of stakeholders across different scales and sectors to communicate and collaborate effectively. Social network theory recognizes that stakeholders interact with each other through networks and that various network characteristics affect the way in which they function. Social relationships can be visualized through network mapping and their patterns systematically analyzed in a process known as social network analysis (SNA). Participatory SNA allows members of the network to be involved in the mapping or analysis process. Participants can then apply their knowledge of these relationships to build, improve, or better utilize their connections to …

Initial testing was carried out using a photo fluorescent tracer dye known as fluorescein sodium salt. Additional testing …

Geology And Origins Of The Peak Gold-Copper-Silver Skarn Deposit, Tok, Alaska, Peter Edward Illig Dec 2015

Geology And Origins Of The Peak Gold-Copper-Silver Skarn Deposit, Tok, Alaska, Peter Edward Illig

Geosciences

The distal Peak Au-Cu skarn deposit was discovered in 2012 on Tetlin native lands 15 miles southeast of Tok, Alaska. The deposit contains anomalous Au-Cu-Bi-Ag-Mo-Fe-Te-As-Pb-Co-W-Cd-Ni. At the time of drilling deposit style, mineralization and origin were not understood. Upper Paleozoic and older metamorphic rocks had been previously mapped in the area; however, no igneous or metasomatic rocks had been recognized. To better understand the deposit I created a 1:25,000 scale geologic map of the 25 km² exploration area; employed approximately 682,500 assays for metal ratios; described textures and minerals in 138 polished thin sections; employed approximately 3,000 meters of new …

Sea-Ice Habitat Preference Of The Pacific Walrus (Odobenus Rosmarus Divergens) In The Bering Sea: A Multiscaled Approach, Alexander Edward Sacco Dec 2015

Sea-Ice Habitat Preference Of The Pacific Walrus (Odobenus Rosmarus Divergens) In The Bering Sea: A Multiscaled Approach, Alexander Edward Sacco

Geosciences

The goal of this thesis is to define specific parameters of mesoscale sea-ice seascapes for which walruses show preference during important periods of their natural history. This research thesis incorporates sea-ice geophysics, marine-mammal ecology, remote sensing, computer vision techniques, and traditional ecological knowledge of indigenous subsistence hunters in order to quantitatively study walrus preference of sea ice during the spring migration in the Bering Sea. Using an approach that applies seascape ecology, or landscape ecology to the marine environment, our goal is to define specific parameters of ice-patch descriptors and mesoscale seascapes in order to evaluate and describe potential walrus …

Using Self-Organizing Maps To Detail Synoptic Connections Between Climate Indices And Alaska Weather, Reynir C. Winnan Dec 2015

Using Self-Organizing Maps To Detail Synoptic Connections Between Climate Indices And Alaska Weather, Reynir C. Winnan

Atmospheric Sciences

Seasonal forecasts for Alaska strongly depend on the phases of Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), and warm water in the North Pacific called the North Pacific Mode or more popularly the "Pacific blob." The canonical descriptions of these climate indices are based on seasonal averages, and anomalies that are based on a long-term mean. The patterns highlight general geographical placement and display a sharp contrast between opposing phases, but this may be misleading since seasonal averages hide much of the synoptic variability. Self-organizing maps (SOMs) are a way of grouping daily sea level pressure (SLP) patterns, over …

Assisting School Personnel With Youth Transitioning From Residential Treatment To A School Environment, Kristi Smith Dec 2015

Assisting School Personnel With Youth Transitioning From Residential Treatment To A School Environment, Kristi Smith

Counseling

The following research project examines the data and literature regarding youth who reside in residential treatment centers for behavior and mental health purposes. The paper introduces common risk factors that youth are experiencing which contribute to their placement in the facilities, as well as the difficulties they face upon exiting the treatment program. This project explores how schools can assist students in the transition from residential treatment to a school setting using a bio-ecological model that supports the students on an individual level up to a systemic level. School counselors serve as a key point of contact for transitioning students …

Space Use And Movements Of Moose Hunters And Wolves In The Yukon Flats, Alaska, Ian Johnson Dec 2015

Space Use And Movements Of Moose Hunters And Wolves In The Yukon Flats, Alaska, Ian Johnson

Biological Sciences

Within the Yukon Flats, Alaska, subsistence communities utilize moose (Alces alces) as a primary resource (78% of households) and wolves (Canis lupus) hunt them as an obligatory prey item. Hence, understanding the potential of direct or indirect competition between wolves and humans is useful for managers. In Chapter 1, I used a novel approach utilizing spatially-linked interviews to quantify the distance subsistence users were traveling from communities and rivers to harvest moose in the Yukon Flats. My study was the first to quantify hunter access in the Arctic and may provide managers with a harvest estimation approach that may supplement …

X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometry Using Synchrotron Radiation With Applications In Unmanned Aircraft Environmental Sensing, Sean Richard Barberie Dec 2015

X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometry Using Synchrotron Radiation With Applications In Unmanned Aircraft Environmental Sensing, Sean Richard Barberie

Chemistry and Biochemistry

In this thesis I present an analytical optimization of the Synchrotron Radiation X-Ray Fluorescence (SR-XRF) technique for applications in unmanned aircraft aerosol studies. In environmental and atmospheric science, there is a pressing need for aerosol measurements at various altitudes in the atmosphere and spanning large regions. This need is currently either ignored, or met to a limited degree by studies that employ manned aircraft. There is, however, a great deal of opportunity to improve and expand on these studies using the emerging technology of unmanned aircraft systems. A newly developed aerosol sampler makes this opportunity a near-reality by its ability …

Structural Study Of Pb(Ii) And Sb(V) Adsorption On The Hydroxylated Hematite(1102) Surface, Canrong Qiu, N/A 丘灿荣 Dec 2015

Structural Study Of Pb(Ii) And Sb(V) Adsorption On The Hydroxylated Hematite(1102) Surface, Canrong Qiu, N/A 丘灿荣

Chemistry and Biochemistry

Surface complexation reactions at mineral-water interface play a key role in dictating the mobility and bioavailability of aqueous species in the environment, considering the minerals (like iron-(oxyhydr)oxides), ubiquitous in nature, are usually of high specific surface area and contain a lot of potentially reactive surface sites for binding ions. Thus, the fundamental understanding of surface complexation reactions is essential to better model the environmental fate and transport of toxic aqueous species. In the current study, the hematite (1102) surface was selected as a model substrate for iron-(oxyhydr)oxides commonly found in the environment to investigate the surface complexation reactions of Pb(II) …

Uncertainty Quantification Of Gas Production In The Barnett Shale Using Time Series Analysis, Kishan Ghanshyambhai Joshi Dec 2015

Uncertainty Quantification Of Gas Production In The Barnett Shale Using Time Series Analysis, Kishan Ghanshyambhai Joshi

Engineering

Deterministic methods for evaluating uncertainty in production forecasts for unconventional shale plays are either unreliable or time intensive. This thesis presents an improved methodology for quantifying uncertainty in production forecasts using Logistic Growth Analysis (LGA) and time series modeling. The applicability of the proposed method is tested by history matching production data and providing uncertainty bounds for forecasts from eight Barnett Shale counties. The 80% confidence interval (CI) generated by this method successfully bracketed true production values for all the counties, even when approximately one-third of the data was used for history matching. In the methodology presented, the trend in …

The astrophysical 18F(p,α)15O rate determines, in large part, the extent to which the observable radioisotope 18F is produced in novae. This rate, however, has been extremely uncertain owing to the unknown properties of a strong subthreshold resonance and its possible interference with higher-lying resonances. The new Jet Experiments in Nuclear Structure and Astrophysics (JENSA) gas-jet target has been used for the first time to determine the spin of this important resonance and significantly reduce uncertainties in the 18F(p,α)15O rate.
