Continuum Theory Of Amorphous Nanophases, Alexander Umantsev

A number of very different recent experiments with nanoparticles produced very similar results: in NPs of sizes above critical the sequence of transformations is similar to that of the bulk while in NPs of sizes below the critical a novel, amorphous (disordered) phase appears and remains stable in a significant domain of variation of the control parameters. In a series of recent publications, the author tried to analyze the origin of this phase. He has developed a field theory of the nanophase stability, which claims that the phase that appears in NPs of sizes below the critical is a transition …

Teaching Compassion In Prison: A Key To Learning, Em Strang

In a project with long-term prisoners at HMP Dumfries, Scotland, tutors and students explore the notion and application of compassion, focusing in particular on the ways in which understanding compassion enables learning – not just the learning of academic subjects but also of interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence. The project highlights the benefits of teaching a so-called extracurricular subject, at the same time as revealing its centrality to learning in the first place. A lack of adequate teaching time in prison, and the fact that compassion is not considered a core subject in education, are both cited as obstacles in …

Developing social justice awareness is a challenging task. Many educational institutions have limited discourse related to race and equity. This autoethnography examines one leader’s attempt to become a transformational leader by having ongoing conversations about race and racism, applying the individualized transformative model of professional development during conversations, utilizing a peer advisory group for feedback, and reflecting on the results. Findings reveal the most important element for growth is the act of engaging in the conversation regardless of one’s perceived level of competence. The individualized transformative model of professional development was demonstrated to be an effective approach to professional development.

The purpose of this qualitative research study was to examine African American community college students’ availability to technological resources and how that availability affects their success. In this study, technological resources include access to the internet, software, hardware, technology training, technology support, and community resources. This study included six community college professors and six African American community college students enrolled in a Midwest community college. A major tenet of Critical Race Theory, storytelling, was used to give voice to students who lack sufficient access to technological resources referred to as the digitally denied. African American nursing students experience commonalities within their college experience. Often these students may be faced with challenges, barriers, and/or struggles that may place a hindrance on their success in meeting their educational goals. This qualitative study used a phenomenological approach to explore African American female nursing students perceptions of faculty-student relationships and its implications for persistence. Four African American female nursing students and two nursing faculty agreed to participate in this study. “Chippy Bits Periodicals” And The Middlebrow: Holbrook Jackson, T. P.'S Weekly (1902–1916) And To-Day (1917–1923), Louise Kane

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

This article investigates two early twentieth-century British periodicals, T. P.'s Weekly (1902–16) and To-day (1917–23), through the perspective of the perceived modernism/middlebrow dichotomy and the editorial practices of Holbrook Jackson. Exploring the history of these two diachronically linked periodicals (To-day incorporated T. P.'s Weekly in 1916), I argue that key moments or “intersections” in the editorial history of T. P.'s Weekly and To-day coincide with distinct and definite “branchings” away from the tenets of the middlebrow culture that largely defined T. P.'s Weekly as part of Jackson's objective of creating a thoroughly modernist periodical.

Chinese Checkers is a multi-player strategy game in which game play can become surprising complex as the game progresses. In spite of this game's complexity, questions involving games with multiple players have received little research attention. This paper considers the three player case and discusses how to describe short games. By utilizing these tendencies for short games, a heuristic function can be defined which associates a player's possible move with a heuristic value. In order to understand and make informed decision on sensitive topics such as domestic violence and drug use, interviews have been used to collect data. However it is difficult to assess how truthful respondents are since they may not feel at ease revealing the truth to an interviewer. Surveyors of sensitive issues face the problem that respondents may be reluctant to answer truthfully since the respondent may feel pressured socially or may fear the repercussions of their truthful answer.
