Comparing Group Means When Nonresponse Rates Differ, Gabriela M. Stegmann
Comparing Group Means When Nonresponse Rates Differ, Gabriela M. Stegmann
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Missing data bias results if adjustments are not made accordingly. This thesis addresses this issue by exploring a scenario where data is missing at random depending on a covariate x. Four methods for comparing groups while adjusting for missingness are explored by conducting simulations: independent samples t-test with predicted mean stratification, independent samples t-test with response propensity stratification, independent samples t-test with response propensity weighting, and an analysis of covariance. Results show that independent samples t-test with response propensity weighting and analysis of covariance can appropriately adjust for bias. ANCOVA is the stronger method when …

Persistence In Commodity Etf Performance, Binghui Li
Research Papers
Commodities ETFs have became popular investments since first introduced in the market. This type of funds provide investors a simple way to gain exposure to commodities, and these types of funds are considered as an asset class to diversify investment portfolios and as a hedge against economic recessions. With more capital invested in commodities ETFs by investors, argument about the efficiency in commodity ETF market are heated debate by economists. This paper developed a reasonable method to explore persistence in commodity ETFs. 30 commodities ETFs, which ranked high in terms of large assets, are selected during the period of 2008 …

Lesson Unplanned: Teenage Pregnancy And A Lack Of Education In The Dominican Republic, A Documentary Short, Jennifer D. Gonzalez
Research Papers
As teenage pregnancy rates are slowly decreasing in the United States, rates in the Dominican Republic are double the world average. 105 out of 1,000 teen girls became pregnant in 2013 according to a study conducted by the United Nations Population Fund. This paper supplements the documentary “Lesson Unplanned” and elaborates on the process of the visual work as well as trends in use/misuse of contraceptives by teenagers, the reason pregnancy occurs in teenagers, and the social impact in the Dominican Republic. Information was collected by on-camera interviews with subjects during field work, both by verbal and visual reporting in …

Women In Egyptian Literature 1914-1919 In The Work Of Naguib Mahfouz(สตรีในวรรณกรรมอียิปต์ยุค ค.ศ.1914 - 1919 งานเขียนของนะญีบ มะห์ฟูซ), Manop Adam
Journal of Letters
During the period from 1914-1919 while Egypt was under British colonial rule Egyptians, especially women, led a traditional way of life. Egyptian author Naguib Mahfouz portrays Egyptian women as being deeply committed to their religious faith and the roles of homemaker, wife, and offering advice to their husbands. Yet, apart from these images, the Egyptian women played a significant role in politics during the people's revolution in 1919. Egyptian literature presents them as supportive mothers and wives who provide counsel and courage to their husbands and children. Moreover, the women were also bravely actively marching in the streets alongside men. …

This is a research through practice focusing on how to use playwriting to investigate the gender discourses that significantly affect the identity of Thai women in today's society, and how the myth of femininity has been constructed as reflected in Thai soap operas. Through the process of writing the play Femmes Fatales of Lanka, this research aims to investigate how to produce a play that can put across an awareness of the myth of femininity in Thai patriarchal society to the audience. Female characters from Thailand's national epic Ramakien as well as from popular Thai soap operas have been used …

Generally, science fiction works regarding robots and androids tend to guide readers to encounter with machines as unfamiliar "others." Therefore, robots in the short story "Epilogue" and androids in the novel, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, can be read as a metaphor for the second-class citizens in American society in the 1960s since these people were "others" to white people. Moreover, the authors employed various narrative techniques, which portray the similarities between humans and robots or androids, in order to convey the second-class citizens' emotions and feelings to the readers. Although these stories clearly reflect the civil rights movement …

This Article concerns a relatively unseen form of labor that affects us all, but that disproportionately burdens women: admin. Admin is the office type work – both managerial and secretarial – that it takes to run a life or a household. Examples include completing paperwork, making grocery lists, coordinating schedules, mailing packages, and handling medical and benefits matters. Both equity and efficiency are at stake here. Admin raises distributional concerns about those people – often women – who do more than their share of this work on behalf of others. Even when different-sex partners who both work outside the home …

Scholars and activists have long been interested in conscientious law-breaking as a means of dissent. The civil disobedient violates the law in a bid to highlight its illegitimacy and motivate reform. A less heralded form of social action, however, involves nearly the opposite approach. As a wide range of examples attest, dissenters may also seek to disrupt legal regimes through hyperbolic, literalistic, or otherwise unanticipated adherence to their formal rules.
This Article asks how to make sense of these more paradoxical protests, involving not explicit law-breaking but rather extreme law following. We seek to identify, elucidate, and call attention to …

At the end of June 2014, the Supreme Court decided one of the most publicized controversies of decades. In a decision covering two cases, widely referred to as Hobby Lobby, the Court held that closely held for-profit corporations, based on their owners' religious convictions, have a right under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) to decline to provide employees with insurance that covers contraceptive devices that may prevent a fertilized egg "from developing any further by inhibiting its attachment to the uterus."
The result has been widely approved by those who favor an extensive scope for religious liberty and …

The Early Implementation Of A Teacher Leadership And Compensation System In A Select Iowa Public School As Codified By House File 215, Anthony Dale Voss
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Thirty-one years ago, in 1983, the report “A Nation at Risk” (Denning, 1983) declared that teacher preparation systems were ill equipped to provide teachers the deep content knowledge they would need in order to be successful, that salaries were much too low, and that we needed to do a better job of recruiting young people into the profession. The 2001 reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (No Child Left Behind) is a call to action, one in which we are reminded that student achievement is stagnant or slipping around the country. In Iowa, attention to the topic of …

Coal fired power plants are responsible for more than 75 percent of the energy produced in Iowa. Burning coal releases large amount of carbon dioxide and other chemical compounds into the atmosphere.
A variety of types of biomass, including prairie vegetation, are being proposed as biofuel alternatives for electrical generation. Tilman et al. (2006) determined that biofuels from mixtures of prairie vegetation of increasing diversity provide more usable energy, reduce greenhouse gases and produce less agriculture pollutants. The Prairie Power Project of the Tallgrass Prairie Center is testing four mixtures of prairie species for maximum production of biomass. A primary …

Although German Americans were unable to completely recover from the discrimination endured during World War I, the American Turners proved to be a resilient group. Despite the insistence of some scholars that the German-American community in the United States lost the battle for cultural pluralism, from 1935 to 1945, the American Turners continued to craft and foster a unique Turner identity. Composed of what members perceived to be the best aspects of their German and American identities, the Turner identity allowed American Turners to both valorize their German heritage and present themselves as devoted Americans. My research into the American …
August Becker And Traditional Vs. Modern Culture In The First Decades Of The Twentieth Century, Michelle Lea Becker Smith
August Becker And Traditional Vs. Modern Culture In The First Decades Of The Twentieth Century, Michelle Lea Becker Smith
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
In the first few decades of the twentieth century, American culture changed drastically from the traditional agricultural culture that had sustained it for a century to one that was modern and revolved around the urban landscape, consumer culture, and manufacturing. In this thesis I explore this change in American culture through the life of August Becker, son of a rural German immigrant who chose a life of crime instead of staying in rural Iowa. His life choices are the lens used to explore the changes in American culture through the first decades of the twentieth century.

This thesis explores the memory of Alexander von Humboldt, the explorer and philosopher who was known for his travels throughout Europe, Asia, South America, and North America. This paper will examine primary and secondary sources throughout the 19th and 20th centuries that mark a change in just how Humboldt was remembered, once as a great thinker, philosopher, and romanticist, then eventually as little more than an empirical scientist. This thesis will contribute to modern understandings of this man by looking at popular publications and writings that track this change over time. It will contribute to the modern understanding …
A Model For Measuring The Contribution Of Form To Perception Of Biological Sex In Point-Light Actors, Michael Mintz
A Model For Measuring The Contribution Of Form To Perception Of Biological Sex In Point-Light Actors, Michael Mintz
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
People are able to judge the sex of actors represented in point-light displays. Much of the previous literature has focused on the contribution of motion information to this judgment, or has focused specifically on information gathered from the shoulders and hips. The purpose of the current study is to model how form information, based upon the distance between the dots representing a point-light actor’s key joints, the shoulder, hip, elbow, knee, wrist, and ankle points, contributes to the perception of biological sex. In a pilot study, 6 naïve observers responded to 63 computer generated stimuli that ranged from extremely female …

During World War II, Iowa State Teacher’s College (now known as University of Northern Iowa) was host to the first indoctrination school and later yeomen school (naval secretaries) of the United States Naval Women’s Reserve or the Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service (WAVES). The first class of 1,500 WAVES arrived at Iowa State Teacher’s College (ISTC) in December 1942. The women endured five to six weeks of an intensive introductory training. In April 1943, the indoctrination school was replaced by a yeomen school. The yeomen school remained in operation until it was closed in April 1945. During its twenty-nine …

Guatemala’s long internal conflict, the lack of justice, the general poverty, and continued violence since the signing of the 1996 Peace Accords prompt many people to migrate to the United States in search of jobs and opportunities for their family. Since the 1980s, Guatemalans have settled in Postville, Iowa, a small town that is nationally recognized for the ethnically diverse populations that live and work there. In 2008, it was also the site of the largest Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) worksite raid to date and the following criminal trials were unprecedented. Because of the tragedy in Postville, sources that detail …
Different Levels Of Negative Emotions And Their Impact On Prosocial Behavior, Tsamchoe Dolma
Different Levels Of Negative Emotions And Their Impact On Prosocial Behavior, Tsamchoe Dolma
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
In this fast and competitive world, people are becoming less likely to help others. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (2014), the volunteerism rate reached the lowest point in 2013 since 2002. This decrease in prosocial behavior makes the study of prosocial behavior important, especially with the increasing numbers of charitable organizations and their competition to attract more donors and volunteers. Public service advertisements (PSA) are used as a common medium to garner help and support, and many of them use emotional appeals to enhance persuasion. The literature on persuasion shows that emotions have persuasive power to change people's …
Identification Of Sluggish Cognitive Tempo By Pre-Service Teachers, Rachel Elizabeth Meisinger
Identification Of Sluggish Cognitive Tempo By Pre-Service Teachers, Rachel Elizabeth Meisinger
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Current research suggests that Sluggish Cognitive Tempo (SCT) is a distinct attentional disorder from Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) that is characterized by a hypoactive, sluggish behavior pattern (Barkley, 2014). Further, unlike ADHD, SCT represents a more passive form of inattention that does not overly disrupt classroom learning goals. Thus children with SCT may be ‘falling through the cracks’ in schools. If children with SCT are going unrecognized in the classroom, they are likely not getting referred for treatment and additional educational services. SCT is related to many internalizing, academic, and social difficulties (Becker & Langberg, 2013, 2014) and early identification and …

Teachers attend many professional development experiences throughout their professional careers. Many teachers attend because they have a personal desire for professional growth. In addition, in the state of Iowa, they are required to engage in professional development to renew teacher licensure. Professional development is offered on a myriad of topics including the latest educational research on learning, innovations in curriculum, and instructional strategies to use in the classroom. However, just attending does not guarantee improved professional practice. After these experiences teachers may or may not implement the strategies, teaching methods, or information they have learned.
This qualitative study analyzed data …
