Evaluating Classroom Time Through Systematic Analysis And Student Feedback, Rebecca M. Achen, Angela Lumpkin
Evaluating Classroom Time Through Systematic Analysis And Student Feedback, Rebecca M. Achen, Angela Lumpkin
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
The purpose of this action research was to examine the use of class time through classroom observation and student feedback. Students’, the teacher’s, and whole class activities during class were categorized every two minutes. Students also were given pre- and post-course surveys to assess perceptions on lecture time, impact of learning strategies, and enjoyment of learning strategies. Results indicated students spent the majority of class time actively engaged in their learning instead of passively listening to lectures. However, their views of the optimal amount of lecture time did not change. Even though students overwhelmingly enjoyed engaging learning activities and found …

More Than Math: On The Affective Domain In Developmental Mathematics, G. Michael Guy, Jonathan Cornick, Ian Beckford
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Students at a large urban community college enrolled in fourteen sections of a developmental algebra class. While cognitive variables are often used to place students, affective characteristics may also influence their success. To explore the impact of affective variables, students took ACT’s Engage survey measuring motivation, academic-related skills and social engagement, as well as the ATMI (Attitudes Toward Math Inventory) survey. Student performance on the course was measured by a common 25 question multiple choice final exam. Of the affective variables measured, ATMI Motivation was statistically significant in positive correlation with final exam score, and ATMI Confidence had a statistically …

Differentiation Of Globular Phytoliths In Arecaceae And Other Monocotyledons: Morphological Description For Paleobotanical Application, Maria Laura Benvenuto, Mariana Fernandez Honaine, Margarita Luisa Osterrieth, Eduardo Morel
Turkish Journal of Botany
Globular phytoliths have been mainly assigned to palms, woody trees, and other monocotyledon families from tropical regions. The lack of detailed descriptions of this phytolith morphology and its correct assignments to particular groups could lead to erroneous interpretations of phytolith records. In order to improve paleobotanical interpretations of phytoliths records, we analyzed the phytolith content and described the quantitative and qualitative characters of globular phytoliths of Arecaceae, Bromeliaceae, Cannaceae, Marantaceae, Orchidaceae, Strelitziaceae, and Zingiberaceae species from Argentina. Phytoliths were extracted by calcination and multivariate analyses were used to analyze their taxonomic relevance. Phytolith assemblages allowed the differentiation 1) among Zingiberales …

Turkish Journal of Botany
A pot culture study was conducted to assess the ameliorative effect of silicon, Melia azadirachta leaf extract, and sugar beet root extract, each applied individually or in different combinations, on salinity-induced detrimental effects in pea (Pisum sativum L.). Salinity markedly inhibited the growth, various gas exchange attributes, total phenol contents, membrane stability index, and productivity. On the other hand, lipid peroxidation, electrolyte leakage, H2O2 content, antioxidant activities, and leaf free proline and glycinebetaine contents were significantly enhanced by salinity. However, exogenously applied Si and phyto-extracts markedly alleviated the salinity-induced drastic effects on growth, gas exchange attributes, and productivity. Both phyto-extracts …

Variability Of Plant Species Diversity During The Natural Restoration Of The Subalpine Birch Forest In The Central Great Caucasus, Natalia Togonidze, Maia Akhalkatsi
Turkish Journal of Botany
The northern slopes of the Central Great Caucasus of Georgia were covered by birch (Betula litwinowii) forests in the past, but forest degradation resulted in subalpine secondary meadows. Over the past 20 years birch forest natural reforestation processes have taken place. The aim of this study was to determine the changes in plant species diversity during reforestation. Different habitat types were selected to trace the development of birch forests from subalpine meadows. Species richness was determined in 100 research plots (25 m2 each) of different habitat types. Pioneer succession was distinguished by the highest level of species richness due to …

Mechanisms Of Tolerance Differences In Cucumber Seedlings Grafted On Rootstocks With Different Tolerance To Low Temperature And Weak Light Stresses, Yan Li, Xuemei Tian, Min Wei, Qinghua Shi, Fengjuan Yang, Xiufeng Wang
Turkish Journal of Botany
Stresses of low temperature and weak light are major environmental limiters for horticultural production in greenhouses in northern China during winter and early spring. Grafting is regarded as a promising approach to enhance cucumber tolerance to these environmental stresses. However, it is still unclear why cucumber plants grafted on different rootstocks usually exhibit different tolerance. The responses of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L. Cv. 'Xintaimici') seedlings that were grafted on three rootstock cultivars ('Kilameki', 'Tielizhen', and 'Figleaf gourd') to low temperature (5 °C) and weak light (100 µmol m-2 s-1) were investigated in this study. The results showed that, compared to …

Genetic Improvement Of Rice For Biotic And Abiotic Stress Tolerance, Mahmood Ur Rahman Ansari, Tayyaba Shaheen, Shazai Bukhari, Tayyab Husnain
Turkish Journal of Botany
Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is among the most important food crops that provide a staple food for nearly half of the world's population. Rice crops are prone to various types of stresses, both biotic and abiotic. Biotic stresses include insect pests, fungus, bacteria, viruses, and herbicide toxicity. Among abiotic stresses, drought, cold, and salinity are also well studied in rice. Various genes have been identified, cloned, and characterized to combat these stresses and protect rice crops. The identified genes are successfully transformed into rice plants to produce transgenic plants. These transgenic rice plants are being evaluated under field conditions in …

Public Accommodations And The Civil Rights Act Of 1964: A Surprising Success?, Brian K. Landsberg
McGeorge School of Law Scholarly Articles
When the Civil Rights Act of 1964 became law the Johnson Administration had ample reason to worry that Title II of the Act, forbidding racial discrimination in public accommodations, would meet widespread, even violent resistance in the Deep South. The Supreme Court upheld Title II’s constitutionality, based on the Commerce Clause of the Constitution. Despite pockets of resistance, within a few years of the passage of the Act, racial discrimination in public accommodations had become the exception, not the rule. While some problems remain, Title II has, on the whole, been remarkably successful. The melting of resistance to Title II …

Influence Of Resonant And Non-Resonant Vibrational Excitation Of Ammonia Molecules In Gallium Nitride Synthesis, Hossein Rabiee Golgir, Yunshen Zhou, Kamran Keramatnejad, Yongfeng Lu
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Attempts on the selective promotion of gallium nitride (GaN) growth were investigated by deploying laserassisted vibrational excitation of reactant molecules, which deposits energy selectively into specific molecules and activate the molecules towards the selected reaction pathways. Laser-assisted metal organic chemical vapor deposition (LMOCVD) of GaN was studied using a wavelength-tunable CO2 laser. The NH-wagging modes (υ2) of ammonia (NH3) precursor molecules are strongly infrared active and perfectly match the emission line of the CO2 laser at 9.219, 10.350, and 10.719 μm. On- and off-resonance excitations of molecules were performed via tuning the incident laser wavelengths at on-resonant wavelength 9.219 μm …

Introduction- The present study sought to further understand the association between caffeinated alcoholic beverage (CAB) use and alcohol-related risks. In particular, we focused on the role of two identified expectancies specific to CAB use: intoxication enhancement and avoidance of negative consequences. Although outcome expectancies are consistent predictors of substance use, limited research has examined expectancies related to CAB use and their association with alcohol-related behaviors, such as protecting themselves from alcohol-related harms. Consequently, the present study examined CAB-specific expectancies and protective behavioral strategies (PBS) as mediators of CAB use and negative consequences.
Methods- Participants were 322 (219 women) college drinkers …

Current immigration law and the privatization of immigration detention centers have made it highly likely that immigrants will be detained. Immigrants will continue to migrate to the United States, and if the immigration policies require detention, the government needs to enforce the compliance of the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) standards, especially in private detention centers. Illegal immigration is not to be condoned, but immigrants still retain the human right to be treated with dignity, free from sexual violence. There are three different types of immigration detention facilities, but the ones owned by private government contractors do not have to …

Do Black Lives Matter? Race As A Measure Of Injury In Tort Law., Alberto Bernabe
The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice
Courts should not recognize an injury for wrongful birth or wrongful life based on the race of the child. In Cramblett v. Midwest Sperm Bank, the petitioner contracted with a sperm bank to be artificially inseminated from an anonymous sperm donor. The petitioner selected a donor with blond hair and blue eyes. The sperm bank accidentally inseminated the petitioner with sperm from a different donor. Petitioner gave birth to a mixed-race baby girl. Two years after the birth, petitioner filed a lawsuit against the sperm bank alleging wrongful birth. The court dismissed her case, nonetheless the issue remains whether race …

While freedom of religion is a right guaranteed to the American people, what that freedom entails, is often misunderstood. Religious freedom affords every American the right to practice any faith without fear of being persecuted or ostracized by the government. This fundamental right is frequently used to oppress certain groups of Americans because their lifestyle is not in accordance with traditional Christian values. This was highlighted in the recent case of Burwell v. Hobby Lobby. The controversy stemmed from the corporation’s use of religion as a method to deny women access to full healthcare coverage, citing religious opposition to abortion …

Can Strategic Risk Management Contribute To Enterprise Risk Management? A Strategic Management Perspective, Phil Bromiley, Devaki Rau, Michael K. Mcshane
Finance Faculty Publications
Within the discipline of enterprise risk management (ERM), strategic risk management (SRM) has become a subject of increasing interest to practitioners and academics. To our knowledge, the term “strategic risk management” first appeared in the management literature in 1985 and 1986 (Jammine, 1985; Figenbaum & Thomas, 1986) and in the academic finance literature in 1990 (Rawls and Smithson, 1990), although early usage of the term did not clearly relate to later conceptions. The phrase has been in use even longer than ERM (Bromiley, McShane, Nair, and Rustambekov, 2014). Even with this longevity, the meaning of the term remains unclear, with …

Idiosyncratic Risk And Earnings Noncommonality, Kenneth Yung, Qian Sun, Hamid Rahman
Finance Faculty Publications
The seminal Campbell et al. (2001) paper showing that idiosyncratic risk has increased considerably in recent years has spawned a large number of articles to explain the phenomenon. In this paper, we propose growing earnings noncommonality as a possible source of the increasing idiosyncratic volatility. The empirical results of this research validate this proposition. Our conclusions stand the test of several robustness checks which show that market power and innovativeness previously considered in literature as sources of increased idiosyncratic volatility are not significant in the presence of earnings noncommonality. The findings of this research will be useful for analysts and …

Many regulators, rating agencies, executives and academics have advocated a new approach to risk management: Enterprise Risk Management (ERM). ERM proposes the integrated management of all the risks an organization faces, which inherently requires alignment of risk management with corporate governance and strategy. Academic research on ERM is still in its infancy, with articles largely in accounting and finance journals but rarely in management journals. We argue that ERM offers an important new research domain for management scholars. A critical review of ERM research allows us to identify limitations and gaps that management scholars are best equipped to address. This …
