Quantifying Weathering Rates On Tropical Volcanic Basse-Terre Island, French Guadeloupe: Insights From U-Series Isotopes In Weathering Rinds, Jacqueline Engel
Quantifying Weathering Rates On Tropical Volcanic Basse-Terre Island, French Guadeloupe: Insights From U-Series Isotopes In Weathering Rinds, Jacqueline Engel
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Weathering of volcanic rocks plays many important roles at Earth’s surface such as modifying landscapes, providing nutrients to soil, and regulating atmospheric CO2. U-series isotopes (e.g. 238U-234U-230Th and 232Th) have been established as a chronometer used to constrain the formation rates of weathering rinds in tropical island environments. Here, U-series isotopes and major element concentrations were analyzed in two basaltic-andesite weathering rinds collected from the Deshaies watershed located in the northern, relatively dry (mean annual precipitation (MAP) = 1800 mm) region of tropical Basse-Terre Island, Guadeloupe. The two clasts are referred to as clasts AN-14-7.5 and AN-14-7.6. Elemental mobility trends …

#Blacklivesmatter: The Investigation Of Twitter As A Site Of Agency In Social Movements, Joseph Lawrence Flores
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
As an extension of mediated communication practices, social media sites have continued to increase the complexities of understanding how they not only affect the real world, but how they continue to effect communication practices in general. Due to the fact that social media sites exist as a mass mediated platform with high amounts of interpersonal communication elements, social media has become an important object of research when understanding how they can provide voice and agency to those who exist outside of traditional media power structures. By observing events in Ferguson, Missouri and Baltimore, Maryland involving police and unarmed civilians, activists, …
Depositional Facies And Interpretation Of Salt-Sediment Interaction In The Lower Triassic Moenkopi Formation Adjacent To The Castle Valley Salt Wall, Paradox Basin, Utah, Ann Marie Foster
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Stratigraphic, sedimentologic and compositional data collected from the Triassic Moenkopi Formation adjacent to the Castle Valley salt anticline, Paradox Basin, Utah indicate passive diapirism of the salt wall with well-developed topography and exposed salt during the Early Triassic. Moenkopi strata thin to 150m on to the Castle Valley salt anticline and thicken to an estimated 275m away from it, indicating control of sedimentation by salt-generated topography. The distribution of nine terrestrial facies assemblages within Moenkopi Formation strata on the margins of Castle Valley Salt Wall, in combination with identification of three halokinetic sequences interpreted from stratal architecture adjacent to the …
An Assessment Of The Role Of Roads In Population Demography And Genetic Structuring In Two Species Of Lizards In The Northern Chihuahuan Desert, Kevin Floyd
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Roads can fragment habitat and increase mortality rates of wildlife, potentially reducing population sizes and gene flow, which in turn can reduce genetic diversity through genetic drift. Although negative road impacts have been found in a variety of taxa, not all species are impacted. For instance, species that move less and rarely encounter roads and those that avoid the roads are predicted to not be negatively affected. Yet tests of these predictions are uncommon, especially for reptiles and particularly lizards. Side-blotched lizards (Uta stansburiana) are small sit-and-wait predators, while the larger marbled whiptails (Aspidoscelis marmorata) are active foragers. Their responses …
Irb Licensing, Philip A. Hamburger
Irb Licensing, Philip A. Hamburger
Faculty Scholarship
This chapter examines conflicting norms in the government's licensing of speech and the press on “human-subjects research” through institutional review boards (IRBs). It begins by discussing licensing and why the prohibition of it is so fundamental and prroceeds by providing an overview of the structure of institutional review board licensing. It then highlights the unconstitutionality of IRB laws, arguing that the use of IRBs violates the principles of academic freedom. It asserts that licensing of speech or the press was a method of controlling the press employed by the Inquisition and the Star Chamber, and the First Amendment unequivocally barred …
Ecological Features Of The Greater Earless Lizard, Cophosaurus Texanus, (Squamata: Phrynosomatidae) On Indio Mountains Research Station, Hudspeth County, Texas, Gabriela Franco
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
626 Cophosaurus texanus were captured on regular trips to Indio Mountains Research Station in Hudspeth County, Texas from August 2010 to November 2014. Mark-recapture methods using 81 pitfall traps and toe-clips for identification allowed for analyses of long-term trends. 291 adult females, 315 males, and 20 unsexed juveniles were recorded. A total of 180 independent recapture events were documented over the study period (44% females; 55% males). The greatest numbers of C. texanus were collected in 2011 (234), which was also the driest year of the four (6.77 cm), whereas 2014 was the wettest (34.95 cm), but had the second-most …

This ethnographic study explored the linguistic identities and pedagogical practices of Latina bilingual-certified K-2 teachers in a dual language (DL) program in the U.S.-Mexico border area. Drawing on sociocultural theory, methods of data collection and analysis focused on linking DL Latina teachers' identity formation with both their conceptions of teaching and their actual pedagogical practices related to language use. The findings from this study painted a portrait of how DL teachersâ?? languages, literacies, and identities intertwined to shape their pedagogical practice. The linguistic backgrounds of DL teachers on the border were shaped by country of origin and languages, schooling experiences, …
Characterization Of The Nodamura Virus Rna Dependent Rna Polymerase And Formation Of Rna Replication Complexes In Mammalian Cells, Vincent Ulysses Gant
Characterization Of The Nodamura Virus Rna Dependent Rna Polymerase And Formation Of Rna Replication Complexes In Mammalian Cells, Vincent Ulysses Gant
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Positive-strand RNA viruses amplify their genomes in membrane-bound structures associated with intracellular membranes and organelles called replication complexes (RCs). Here, we begin to elucidate mechanisms of Nodamura virus (NoV; family Nodaviridae) RC assembly. The literature reports that NoV-infected muscle tissue exhibits mitochondrial aggregation and rearrangement of mitochondrial structure, leading to disorganization of the muscle fibrils. However, the molecular basis for this pathogenesis and the role of mitochondria in NoV infection remained unclear until now. We tested the hypoThesis that NoV establishes RCs in association with mitochondria in cultured mammalian cells at physiological temperature. We used immunofluorescence confocal microscopy and biochemical …

Simulations Of The Effects Of Temperature And Plasma In Carbide Processing, Alejandro Garcia
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The transient surface temperature of particles within a packed bed was simulated to enable ultimately the prediction of plasma-surface reactions at ultrahigh temperatures. The motivation for the present study was along two fronts - the reactive infusion of liquid alloys at ultrahigh temperatures to process metal matrix or ceramic matrix composites and the plasma processing of materials to spike the surface temperatures to enable the formation of protective oxidizing scales on ultrahigh ceramic composites. The transient temperature simulations determined that a graphite crucible containing B4C spherical particles heated from 298 to 2128 K and 2504 K occurred in about 900 …
Differences In Stress Biomarkers In Women With High And Low Stress Appraisal, Clarissa Sara Gomez
Differences In Stress Biomarkers In Women With High And Low Stress Appraisal, Clarissa Sara Gomez
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Measures of physiological biomarkers have been widely used in the field of stress research to explain how stress negatively impacts health outcomes. Women in particular have been shown to be more at risk for developing physiological and psychological stress-induced conditions (e.g., hypertension, depression) due to hormonal differences (Kirschbaum et al., 1992), but more importantly, because of their appraisal of stressful events (Schamus et al., 2008). Few studies however have examined whether womenâ??s stress appraisal is predictive of stress reactivity, as measured by stress biomarkers, during stressful events. The goal of this study was to examine whether stress appraisal predicted stress …
Transition States And Modeling For Co9s8/Mos2 Catalysis, Gabriel Angel Gonzalez
Transition States And Modeling For Co9s8/Mos2 Catalysis, Gabriel Angel Gonzalez
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Transition state computational studies of the sulfur removal from dibenzothiophene (DBT) molecule have herein been performed considering the Co9S8/MoS2 interface existing on unsupported Co/MoS2 catalysts. The linear synchronous transit (LST) and quadratic synchronous transit (QST) methods integrated in a density functional theory (DFT) program such as Dmol3 were used for the calculations of energy barriers of the transition states. Three different configurations present on the Co9S8/MoS2 interface have been envisaged as possible catalytic sites: sulfur-sulfur (S, S) sites, and molybdenum-sulfur (Mo, S) and molybdenum-molybdenum (Mo, Mo) edge sites. This study revealed that the (Mo, Mo) edge site is the most …

Our current system provides up to 60 minutes of human-ECA interaction in a jungle-survival …
Electrical Stimulation Uses Sodium Channel Dependent Depolarization To Produce Exocytotic-Like Dopamine Release And Rotational Behavior In Vivo, Alice Elaine Hernandez
Electrical Stimulation Uses Sodium Channel Dependent Depolarization To Produce Exocytotic-Like Dopamine Release And Rotational Behavior In Vivo, Alice Elaine Hernandez
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The goal of this project was to establish Electrical Stimulation (ES) in combination with In Vivo Intracerebral Microdialysis (IVMCD) as a methodology to evoke exocytotic-like dopamine (DA) release. To provide evidence that ES mimics action potential-mediated DA exocytosis, we hypothesized that ES produces depolarization of the membrane potential that is dependent upon sodium (Na+) -channels to produce DA release concomitantly with rotational behavior. To test this, rats received electrode and cannulae implants along the medial forebrain bundle, which contains the DAergic nigrostriatal pathway, and a microdialysis probe at the striatum to undergo IVMCD testing. To begin, steady baseline DA levels …
Computational Search For Novel Magnetic Clusters With Large Magnetic Anisotropy Energy, Nabil Md Rakinul Hoque
Computational Search For Novel Magnetic Clusters With Large Magnetic Anisotropy Energy, Nabil Md Rakinul Hoque
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The clusters of transition metal atoms often show high spin moments but generally are reactive with the environment. Passivation of the surface atoms can lead to more stable clusters. We have explored one such avenue for passivation in this work. We picked the As@Ni12@As20 cluster which in the neutral state has a magnetic moment of 3 μB. We doped this cluster with various numbers of Mn atoms by substituting Ni atoms. The substitutional doping leads to spin moments located on the Mn atoms. The doping leads to symmetry breaking and as a consequence the number of structural isomers and spin …

Late Miocene-Quaternary Fault Evolution And Interaction In The Southern California Inner Continental Borderland, Christopher C. Sorlien, Jonathan T. Bennett, Marie-Helene Cormier, Brian A. Campbell, Craig Nicholson, Robert L. Bauer
Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications
Changing conditions along plate boundaries are thought to result in the reactivation of preexisting structures. The offshore southern California Borderland has undergone dramatic adjustments as conditions changed from subduction tectonics to transform tectonics, including major Miocene oblique extension, followed by transpressional fault reactivation. However, consensus is still lacking about stratigraphic age models, fault geometry, and slip history for the near-offshore area between southern Los Angeles and San Diego (California, USA). We interpret an extensive data set of seismic reflection, bathymetric, and stratigraphic data from that area to determine the three-dimensional geometry and kinematic evolution of the faults and folds and …

The FLM intends to use pre-recorded video lessons to teach outside the classroom and incorporate homework and problem solving inside the …
Ownership And Possession, Thomas W. Merrill
Ownership And Possession, Thomas W. Merrill
Faculty Scholarship
One of the enduring mysteries about property is why the law protects both ownership and possession. In a pre-modern world, with low rates of literacy and no formal method of registering titles, one can understand why the law would protect possession. In such a world, there may be no concept of property beyond the understanding that persons should respect possessory rights established by others. It is less clear why possession should be protected once property comes to be understood as ownership. Ownership and possession will commonly overlap, and protecting ownership will protect possession. Nevertheless, even in the most sophisticated legal …

In recent years, the wind power industry has focused its efforts on solving the Wind Farm Layout Optimization (WFLO) problem. Wind resource assessment is a pivotal step in optimizing the wind-farm design and siting and, in determining whether a project is economically feasible or not. In the present work, three (3) different optimization methods are proposed for the solution of the WFLO: (i) A modified Viral System Algorithm applied to the optimization of the proper location of the components in a wind-farm to maximize the energy output given a stated wind environment of the site. The optimization problem is formulated …
Optimization Of Green Logistics Using Genetic Algorithm Approach, Gabriela Ituarte-Villarreal
Optimization Of Green Logistics Using Genetic Algorithm Approach, Gabriela Ituarte-Villarreal
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Green Logistics (GL) becomes critical in Supply Chain Management (SCM) due to it having less of an impact to the environment. Green Logistics optimization refers to the determination depot quantity, decreasing uncovered demand and CO2 emission reduction. To date, application of Genetic Algorithm (GA) has been proven to be very efficient and reliable in solving optimization problems; it is also capable of operating simultaneously with multiple solutions. Basically, GA imitates the natural evolution of a population with initial solutions. In this Thesis a modified Genetic Algorithm is proposed to solve the multiple objective GL optimization problem. MATLAB software is used …
Delegation, Accommodation, And The Permeability Of Constitutional And Ordinary Law, Gillian E. Metzger
Delegation, Accommodation, And The Permeability Of Constitutional And Ordinary Law, Gillian E. Metzger
Faculty Scholarship
To some, the very idea of the constitutional law of the administrative state is an oxymoron. On this view, core features of the national administrative state — broad delegations and the combination of legislative, executive, and judicial power within administrative agencies, particularly agencies that are headed by unelected executive officials only removable on narrow grounds — are fundamentally at odds with both constitutional separation of powers principles and due process. To others, no such conflict between contemporary administrative governance and the Constitution exists, and assertions of the administrative state’s unconstitutionality rest on basic misunderstandings of what separation of powers and …

Memory, State Violence, And Revolution: Mexico's Dirty War In Ciudad Juárez, Vanessa Claire Johnson
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
After the uprising that took place in Madera, Chihuahua on September 23, 1965, the first armed challenge to the state since the Mexican Revolution, the north became a region of historical significance for understanding the subsequent "Dirty War" that spanned from the late 1960s to the early 1980s. Ciudad Juárez was a key locale in which a wide variety of revolutionary groups conducted both open and clandestine activities. Attempting to rouse the masses, a dedicated few organized protests, counter-meetings, popular assemblies, and launched a prepa popular to reorganize and democratize education. The Mexican state responded to these events with repression, …
Effect Of Cooperativeness Of The Parent On Juvenile Probation Officer Decision-Making Using A Randomized Controlled Design, Tamara Kang
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Juvenile probation officers acknowledge the importance of gaining the parents' cooperation during supervision to ensure the best chance for rehabilitation. However, there is reason to believe that officers may attend to parental cooperativeness to inform decisions on how much to involve the parent in supervision. The importance of the parent is well accepted, but the effect of parental cooperation on officers' decisions concerning the juvenile's fate on supervision has yet to be examined. Aim 1 of this study examined the extent to which an officer's response to a first instance and second instance of noncompliance was affected by the cooperativeness …

Systematics Of The African River Frog Genus Amietia (Anura: Pyxicephalidae) From Eastern Democratic Republic Of The Congo, Thornton Robert Larson
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The African river frog genus Amietia is found near rivers and other lentic water sources throughout central, eastern and southern Africa. Because the genus includes multiple morphologically conservative species, taxonomic studies of river frogs have been limited. We sampled 49 individuals of Amietia from multiple localities in and near the Albertine Rift (AR) of Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda. We utilized single-gene (16S) and concatenated (12S, 16S, cytochrome b and RAG1) gene-tree analyses and coalescent species-tree analyses to construct phylogenetic trees. Two divergence dating approaches were used in BEAST, including secondary calibration points with 12S, 16S and …

The Window To The Bilingual Mind: Eye Movements Reveal Psycholinguistic Grain Unit Sizes Of Bilingual Spoken Word Recognition, Yu-Cheng Lin
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Although there are common phonological units across different languages, previous studies have shown that individual differences of language proficiency affect sound unit preferences in monolingual and bilingual speakers. The cross-language lexical activation of phonological representations in bilingual minds can provide a great opportunity for testing hypotheses about how this key factor modulates the cross-linguistic phonological transfer across languages. In this study, I used the eye-tracking technique and quantitative methods (i.e., growth curve analysis and multilevel regression) to examine how individual differences in language proficiency affect cross-language phonological unit size transfer in Chinese-English bilinguals. Participants heard a spoken word and were …
Iso-Power-Efficiency: An Approach To Scaling Application Codes With A Power Budget, Rogelio Long
Iso-Power-Efficiency: An Approach To Scaling Application Codes With A Power Budget, Rogelio Long
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
For many applications, speedup saturates and parallel efficiency decreases if the problem size is held fixed while increasing the number of processors. For some problems, it is possible to maintain a fixed parallel efficiency by increasing both the problem size and the number of processing elements. The rate at which the problem size must increase to maintain constant efficiency for a given rate of increase of the number of processors is given by the iso-efficiency function. We have developed a new scalability function called iso-power-efficiency that determines the rate at which the problem size must increase to maintain constant efficiency …

Bounded Rationality In Decision Making Under Uncertainty: Towards Optimal Granularity, Joseph Anthony Lorkowski
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Starting from well-known studies by Kahmenan and Tversky, researchers have found many examples when our decision making seems to be irrational. We show that this seemingly irrational decision making can be explained if we take into account that human abilities to process information are limited. As a result, instead of the exact values of different quantities, we operate with granules that contain these values. On several examples, we show that optimization under such granularity restriction indeed leads to observed human decision making. Thus, granularity helps explain seemingly irrational human decision making.
Similar arguments can be used to explain the success …
