An Investigation Of Confucius Institute’S Effects On China’S Ofdi Via Cultural Difference And Institutional Quality, Chensheng Xu, Feng Yao, Fan Zhang Jan 2015

An Investigation Of Confucius Institute’S Effects On China’S Ofdi Via Cultural Difference And Institutional Quality, Chensheng Xu, Feng Yao, Fan Zhang

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

This paper uses a panel data of China's outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) from 2004-2012 to investigate the influence of Confucius Institute on China's OFDI. We find that Confucius Institute, as a comprehensive platform for China's foreign cultural exchange, has a significant positive effect on China’s OFDI. Interestingly, the positive effect can be reduced with larger cultural difference and can be increased in host countries with lower institutional quality. Correspondingly, we find that Confucius Institute’s impact on China’s OFDI is more obvious in host countries with smaller cultural difference or lower institutional quality.

Was Adam Smith Right About Religious Competition?, Peter J. Boettke, Joshua C. Hall, Kathleen M. Sheehan Jan 2015

Was Adam Smith Right About Religious Competition?, Peter J. Boettke, Joshua C. Hall, Kathleen M. Sheehan

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

Adam Smith famously argued that increased competition in religion would result in more religious tolerance and that the benefits of competition in the marketplace would also be seen in religious instruction when many religious sects are tolerated. We use a cross-section of a maximum of 167 countries to explore whether increased religious competition results in less governmental regulation of religion and less governmental favoritism of religion. Our measure of religious regulation and favoritism comes from the Association of Religion Data Archives. Our empirical analysis also explores the influence of economic and political factors, including the size of the economy, openness …

Engaging In Lesson Study At Georgia College, Angel R. Abney, Brandon Samples, Doris Santarone Jan 2015

Engaging In Lesson Study At Georgia College, Angel R. Abney, Brandon Samples, Doris Santarone

Proceedings of the Annual Meeting of the Georgia Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators

A lesson study cycle is a professional development process that integrates research and reflection through collaboration. The cycle allows a group to refine a lesson based on these collaboration efforts such as interaction with students and the post-lesson discussion. Secondary pre-service teachers in a mathematics methods course engaged in a lesson study cycle through collaboration between in-service teachers, Georgia College professors, and students in a local high school classroom. We systematically investigated this process to determine that through preparing, enacting and reflecting on their practice, Pre-service Teachers (PST) developed insight, reasoning, and understanding of the mathematics that they taught.

Numerical Study On Scaling Effects And Decoupled Network-Based Simulation Of Gaseous Explosion, Liang Wang Jan 2015

Numerical Study On Scaling Effects And Decoupled Network-Based Simulation Of Gaseous Explosion, Liang Wang

Doctoral Dissertations

"This research seeks to improve the prediction efficiency of gaseous explosions realized by numerical simulations in a full-scale underground network using a decoupled method. To provide quick predictions of overpressure distribution of methane explosions in underground airway networks, a two-section theory is employed. The explosion space is divided into a driver section and a blast-wave section. Governing equations including conservation of mass, momentum, and energy, together with chemical reaction and turbulence models are solved for the driver and the blast-wave sections using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solver ANSYS Fluent (3D-based) and Flowmaster (1D-based) respectively. The three dimensional (3D) and one …

Investigation Of Lost Circulation Materials Impact On Fracture Gradient, Mortadha Turki Alsaba Jan 2015

Investigation Of Lost Circulation Materials Impact On Fracture Gradient, Mortadha Turki Alsaba

Doctoral Dissertations

"Lost circulation is a challenging problem to be prevented or mitigated during drilling. Lost circulation treatments are widely applied to mitigate losses using a corrective approach or to prevent losses using preventive approaches, also known as "wellbore strengthening". The disagreement among the different wellbore strengthening theories and the lack of understanding the strengthening mechanism resulted in the absence of a standardized method to evaluate the effectiveness of lost circulation materials (LCM) for wellbore strengthening application.

An extensive experimental investigation was performed by constructing a high pressure LCM test apparatus to investigate the effects of different parameters on the sealing efficiency …

The Synthesis And Characterization Of Water-Reducible Nanoscale Colloidal Unimolecular Polymer (Cup) Particles, Cynthia J. Riddles Jan 2015

The Synthesis And Characterization Of Water-Reducible Nanoscale Colloidal Unimolecular Polymer (Cup) Particles, Cynthia J. Riddles

Doctoral Dissertations

"The coatings industry has adapted to more stringent guidelines in paint formulations. Current VOC (volatile organic compound) limits placed by the federal government have pushed the industry toward the development of paint formulations which have very little to no VOC's. The development of Colloidal Unimolecular Polymer (CUP) particles is a step in the direction of providing a resin system which exists in zero VOC aqueous dispersion.

The CUP particles are a part of the polymer field of Single Chain Nano Particles (SCNP) and ranged in diameters of 3-9 nm. The research presented in this dissertation describes the synthesis and design …

Non-Destructive And Destructive Bridge Deck Condition Assessment, Aleksandra V. Varnavina Jan 2015

Non-Destructive And Destructive Bridge Deck Condition Assessment, Aleksandra V. Varnavina

Doctoral Dissertations

"The dissertation is composed of three papers, which cover the lack of information on the specific aspects of non-destructive and destructive bridge deck assessment.

In the first paper, appropriate data acquisition and processing parameters for concrete bridge deck condition assessment using ground-coupled ground penetrating radar are developed. The use of proposed parameters helps to significantly reduce acquisition and processing time, while providing engineers with reliable and detailed information on the condition of bridge deck.

In the second paper, a novel approach to develop relationship between GPR data and concrete removal depth measurements collected after hydrodemolition is proposed. A linear relationship …

Small Sample Umpu Equivalence Testing Based On Saddlepoint Approximations, Renren Zhao Jan 2015

Small Sample Umpu Equivalence Testing Based On Saddlepoint Approximations, Renren Zhao

Doctoral Dissertations

"In the first section, we consider small sample equivalence tests for exponentiality. Statistical inference in this setting is particularly challenging since equivalence testing procedures typically require a much larger sample size, in comparison to classical "difference tests", to perform well. We make use of Butler's marginal likelihood for the shape parameter of a gamma distribution in our development of equivalence tests for exponentiality. We consider two procedures using the principle of confidence interval inclusion, four Bayesian methods, and the uniformly most powerful unbiased (UMPU) test where a saddlepoint approximation to the intractable distribution of a canonical sufficient statistic is used. …

Stephens, Johant Lakey-Beitia, Abdurrahman Atesin, Tülay A. Ateşin, Gabriel Chavez, Hadi D. Arman, Oleg V. Larionov

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Chemistry)

We report herein a palladium-catalyzed C-H arylation of quinoline N-oxides that proceeds with high selectivity in favor of the C8-isomer. This site-selectivity is unusual for palladium, since all of the hitherto described methods of palladium-catalyzed C-H functionalization of quinoline N-oxides are highly C2-selective. The reaction exhibits a broad synthetic scope with respect to quinoline N-oxides and iodoarenes and can be significantly accelerated to sub-hour reaction times under microwave irradiation. The C8-arylation method can be carried out on gram scale and has excellent functional group tolerance. Mechanistic and Density Functional Theory (DFT) computational studies provide evidence for the …

Sheikh, Javier Macossay-Torres, Travis Cantu, Xujun Zhang, M. Shamshi Hassan, M. Esther Salinas, Chakavak S. Farhangi, Hassan Ahmad, Hern Kim, Gary L. Bowlin

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Chemistry)

In the present study, we discuss the electrospinning of medical grade polyurethane (Carbothane™ 3575A) nanofibers containing multi-walled-carbon-nanotubes (MWCNTs). A simple method that does not depend on additional foreign chemicals has been employed to disperse MWCNTs through high intensity sonication. Typically, a polymer solution consisting of polymer/MWCNTs has been electrospun to form nanofibers. Physiochemical aspects of prepared nanofibers were evaluated by SEM, TEM, FT-IR and Raman spectroscopy, confirming nanofibers containing MWCNTs. The biocompatibility and cell attachment of the produced nanofiber mats were investigated while culturing them in the presence of NIH 3T3 fibroblasts. The results from these tests indicated non-toxic behavior …

The Limits Of Judicial Mechanisms For Developing And Enforcing International Environmental Norms: Introductory Remarks, Nienke Grossman, Jacqueline Peel

All Faculty Scholarship

International courts and tribunals have played a key role in the development of principles and norms of international environmental law. Over the last two decades, such bodies have been asked to resolve a growing number of disputes that involve environmental issues. The types of issues considered by international courts and tribunals have also expanded in scope and complexity. For instance, disputes concerning environmental matters may involve claims of state responsibility, law of the sea questions, human rights issues, or trade and investment aspects.

An Acid-Bath Technique To Break Seed Dormancy In Common Sunflower, Helianthus L. Annuus (Asteraceae), Yuridia Patricia Gandy, Michael W. Persans, Kenneth R. Summy Jan 2015

An Acid-Bath Technique To Break Seed Dormancy In Common Sunflower, Helianthus L. Annuus (Asteraceae), Yuridia Patricia Gandy, Michael W. Persans, Kenneth R. Summy

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Chemistry)

The phenomenon of seed dormancy is widespread in plants and serves to prevent all or most of a given population from germinating at the “wrong” time, e.g., during an unusually mild fall in an area subject to typically harsh winters. Seed dormancy is an effective survival strategy in many plant populations, but may greatly complicate efforts to establish large cohorts of seedlings (groups of similar age or developmental stage) needed for re-search and other purposes. In an effort to break seed dormancy in common sunflower, Helianthus annuus L. (Asteraceae), we conducted experiments designed to compare germination times and overall germination …

Intra-Group Stigma: Examining Peer Relationships Among Women In Recovery For Addictions, Alana J. Gunn, Kelli E. Canada

Social Work Faculty Scholarship

This grounded theory study explores how women with histories of addiction perceive stigma while in treatment. In-depth interviews were conducted with 30 women participating in a residential drug treatment centre. Previous research has found that support from peers during recovery can be critical to managing illnesses. In fact, researchers have postulated that peers can be a more effective form of support than even family. This study extends existing literature indicating that peer support systems can be supportive, however they can also can be perceived as negative support that impose stigmas. Findings reveal that women perceive stigmas due to how various …
