Tacos And Coloniality: A Review Essay, Michael Soldatenko

Diálogo

Two recently published books examine the concept of “Mexican food” in the U.S. and Mexico. Gustavo Arellano’s Taco USA: How Mexican Food Conquered America (2012) provides a readable journalistic examination of Mexican food in the U.S., and Jeffrey Pilcher’s Planet Taco: A Global History of Mexican Food (2012) offers an academic study of Mexican food presentations in a global setting by an established scholar. Each offers an entry for the field of Mexican food studies. This reading examines correlations of power in the colonial process and development of contemporary cuisine, drawing the conclusion that the concept of “Mexican food” is …

Green Chile And Flour Tortillas: The Making Of A Standard New Mexican Cuisine, Stephanie M. Sánchez Jan 2015

Green Chile And Flour Tortillas: The Making Of A Standard New Mexican Cuisine, Stephanie M. Sánchez

Diálogo

Regional and ethnic cuisines result from generations of cultural mixing and adaptation. In the case of regional New Mexican cuisine, a food culture distinct from other southwestern diets, emerged since the colonial era, based on the central role of chile peppers, both green and red varieties. The mestizaje in preparations of such as flour tortillas, sopaipillas, and blue corn further defines New Mexican culinary traditions. The unique ingredients and cooking practices of New Mexico cuisine are assessed in this article as essential expressions of cultural identity and regional tourism, and are increasingly important to marketing and the agricultural industry.

Public Corruption In Liberian Government, Stephen H. Gobewole Jan 2015

Public Corruption In Liberian Government, Stephen H. Gobewole

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

There is a widespread public perception of corruption in Liberia's election process, yet there is little documentation on the characteristics of voters and their perceptions of electoral corruption. The purpose of this correlational study was to explore the relationship between gender, ethnicity, physical location, and perceptions about political activity during the 2005 national election. Roderick Chisolm's conceptualization of the internalist view of justification served as the theoretical construct. Data were acquired from the Afrobarometer survey (n = 1,200), which used a representative cross-sectional sample design, and were subjected to cross-tabulation analysis, a chi-square test, and a correlation analysis. The results …

Road Management System And Road Safety In Uganda, Paul Gudoi Zanule Jan 2015

Road Management System And Road Safety In Uganda, Paul Gudoi Zanule

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Traffic collisions cost Uganda millions of dollars each year. The purpose of this descriptive case study was to describe the strategies and processes needed to implement a road management system. Such a system would significantly reduce the fatalities and accidents in Uganda, improve the transportation within Kampala's business district, and increase business profitability. Three conceptual theories framed the research study: management theory, strategic management theory, and criminology theory. Using a snowball sampling strategy, data were collected from open-ended interviews, questionnaires, observations, and archived documents from 20 administrative participants in the government and organizational leaders involved in the transport operations and …

Valuation, Pricing, And Performance Of Initial Public Offerings On The Ghana Stock Exchange, Mohammed Sani Abdulai Jan 2015

Valuation, Pricing, And Performance Of Initial Public Offerings On The Ghana Stock Exchange, Mohammed Sani Abdulai

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

In recent years, the initial public offerings (IPOs) on the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) witnessed some level of undersubscriptions. The purpose of this research was to investigate the extent to which valuation, pricing, and performance of prior IPOs listed on the GSE contributed to this state of undersubscriptions. The research was informed by the valuation and pricing framework of Roosenboom. The research questions addressed whether IPOs on the GSE were under/overpriced and whether the projected and pre-issue financials were free from forecasting errors and earnings management. A cross-sectional, explanatory research design was employed to examine a dataset of 30 sampled …

Predictors Of Full Childhood Immunization Status In Owerri, Nigeria, Osuala Uzor Kelvin

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Full (complete) childhood immunization against tuberculosis, poliomyelitis, diphtheria, tetanus, hepatitis B, yellow fever, measles, and the maternal retention of immunization documentation are the most cost-effective interventions against vaccine-preventable childhood diseases. The full childhood immunization rate in Nigeria has not reached the expected target level of compliance at 90%. Using the social ecological model, this study investigated the influence of maternal satisfaction with postnatal services and paternal support on full childhood immunization status; it also examined the association between maternal factors and the maternal retention of immunization documentation in Owerri, Nigeria. The hypotheses were that maternal satisfaction with postnatal services and …

Uniform Refraction In Negative Refractive Index Materials, Eric Stachura, Cristian E. Gutirrez Jan 2015

Uniform Refraction In Negative Refractive Index Materials, Eric Stachura, Cristian E. Gutirrez

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Scholarship

We study the problem of constructing an optical surface separating two homogeneous, isotropic media, one of which has a negative refractive index. In doing so, we develop a vector form of Snell’s law, which is used to study surfaces possessing a certain uniform refraction property, in both the near- and far-field cases. In the near-field problem, unlike the case when both materials have positive refractive indices, we show that the resulting surfaces can be neither convex nor concave.

Exploring Small Ghanaian And U.S. Banks' Efficiency During The 2007-2009 Financial Crisis, Reuben Ashitey Amarh Jan 2015

Exploring Small Ghanaian And U.S. Banks' Efficiency During The 2007-2009 Financial Crisis, Reuben Ashitey Amarh

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The adverse effect of small bank closures in the United States from 2007 to 2009 required $7 trillion from United States taxpayers to rescue the United States economy. This comparative case study explored the reasons that led to differences in efficiency in small banks in the United States and Ghana during the 2007 to 2009 period. This research was driven by the contingency theory, which states leaders perform well if they change their styles of leadership to suit the situation at hand. Semistructured interviews were employed to gather data from 20 senior and chief executives of small banks: 10 from …

Jesus Broke Down The Wall: A Study On The Potential Impact Of Student Religious Organizations On Racial Reconciliation Efforts At The University Of Mississippi, Emilie J. Street Jan 2015

Jesus Broke Down The Wall: A Study On The Potential Impact Of Student Religious Organizations On Racial Reconciliation Efforts At The University Of Mississippi, Emilie J. Street

Honors Theses

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the potential impact of student religious organizations at the University of Mississippi on racial reconciliation efforts on campus. Since 2009, the university has dealt with numerous racialized events that have resulted in a culture of resentment. Additionally, student religious organizations at the university attract a large number of students, and in many ways, serve as a significant influence on campus culture; however, this study demonstrates that they rarely take action to combat these incidents, which are often perceived as racially insensitive, or the culture that cultivates them. Findings of the study also …

Standardized Articulation Test Performance Of African American Preschoolers In Mississippi, Emily Ortega Jan 2015

Standardized Articulation Test Performance Of African American Preschoolers In Mississippi, Emily Ortega

Honors Theses

In the past, standardized articulation tests administered by speech-language pathologists (SLPs) have had tendencies to be biased against speakers of a dialect with characteristics that differ from Mainstream American English (MAE). Using these MAE norm referenced tests can cause several problems, including over diagnosing African American (AA) children with impaired speech and language. The purpose of this study is to document the performance of four-year-old African American English (AAE) speakers for their use of age appropriate phonemes regardless of dialect, and whether the presence of AAE affects participants' scores on the following articulation tests: the Arizona Articulation Proficiency Scale-Third Edition …

Dna I-Motif Stabilization By Ligand Binding To Loop Regions, Harrison Reed Davis Jan 2015

Dna I-Motif Stabilization By Ligand Binding To Loop Regions, Harrison Reed Davis

Honors Theses

DNA i-motifs are a secondary structure of DNA that can be useful in a variety of ways, but this experiment investigates the maximum potential to stabilize i-motifs artificially with a small molecule binding to loop regions. DNA with different position and number of loops was tested to see to what extent the i-motif could be stabilized . A drug, Actinomycin D, was used for its known high affinity for a particular DNA sequence, which we used to make the loops of the i-motif. The binding constant for the drug to the DNA was determined through fluorescense spectroscopy while the presence …

The Chinese Inquisition: Xi Jinping's War On Corruption, Harriet E. Fisher Jan 2015

The Chinese Inquisition: Xi Jinping's War On Corruption, Harriet E. Fisher

Honors Theses

An integral part of Chinese political life is the rampant corruption that infests every level of Chinese government. China's current leader, Xi Jinping, has initiated a hardline anti-corruption campaign that, for the first time in history, has targeted both low-level officials (small flies) and high-level officials (big tigers). This thesis is concerned with the factors that have motivated Xi to initiate these unprecedented reforms. I have identified three potential motivations: office, policy, and legitimacy. The office motivation refers to Xi's attempt to consolidate his own power as leader of China, as well as the power of his political faction, represented …

I address the causes of the current amount of outstanding student debt on governmental, institutional, and personal fronts, and analyze the amount of debt and cost of tuition and fees by type of institution in order …

Economic Vs. Ideological Interests: Examining Chinese Arms Exports And Aid, James Delton Rhodes Jan 2015

Economic Vs. Ideological Interests: Examining Chinese Arms Exports And Aid, James Delton Rhodes

Honors Theses

This thesis examines China's role in the world, specifically from 1990 to 2011. I discuss China's arms exports and outward direct investment (ODI) and how these relate with China's policy goals. Do Chinese leaders use these two methods as means of gaining long-term, international hegemonic/ strategic support, or are they related to gaining short-term, domestic economic-based support? In this thesis, I attempt to look into international political theory (constructivism and rationalism) and how this applies to China's current and future ambitions as a world power. I test this by looking at factors like UN voting, polity IV score, and natural …

Insights For Marketers: College Student Consumer Trends, Jana Elisabeth Newcomer

Honors Theses

This thesis will aim to examine the ways in which college students can best be reached by marketing efforts. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, 21 million students will attend college this year—a whopping 5.7 million more than in 2000. Considering the impact of their preferences and the billions of dollars of discretionary money spent by college students annually, this segment of the market is a critical one. College students are consuming social media constantly, embracing technological change, and desiring for brands and products to help define them. Through the use of quantitative and qualitative data, this thesis …
