By implementing simple ‘tweeks’ in teaching, routines, and procedures, teachers can make a tremendous difference in the success rate for a child on the autism spectrum as well as the other students in the classroom. The presenters will provide straight forward strategies that each attendee will be able to implement upon leaving the session. These are proven strategies that the presenters currently use and will be sharing. Although the focus of the presentation will be on the inclusion of students on the autism spectrum within the …

Signaling Mechanisms That Control Ciliated Cell Differentiation, Benjamin John Gerovac Nov 2015

Signaling Mechanisms That Control Ciliated Cell Differentiation, Benjamin John Gerovac

Open Access Dissertations

An innate front-line defense mechanism termed mucociliary clearance (MCC) occurs in the airway epithelium and is critical for respiratory health. MCC is made possible by the coordinated efforts of goblet and multiciliated cells, two cell types that line the airway epithelium. Maintaining the relative populations of goblet and multiciliated cells is necessary for optimum MCC, however, decreases in the multiciliated cell population and dysfunctional MCC are seen in a variety of respiratory diseases. Despite the clinical relevance, there is still much to understand about the signaling pathways that control multiciliated cell fate. Previous data has shown multiciliated cell differentiation of …

Comparative Demography Of A Coral Reef Fish: Vertical And Horizontal Spatial Variability In Bicolor Damselfish (Stegastes Partitus) Traits, Survival, And Reproduction, Esther Diane Goldstein Nov 2015

Comparative Demography Of A Coral Reef Fish: Vertical And Horizontal Spatial Variability In Bicolor Damselfish (Stegastes Partitus) Traits, Survival, And Reproduction, Esther Diane Goldstein

Open Access Dissertations

Coral reef fish populations are composed of subpopulations across a range of depths and geographic locations that are connected through larval dispersal. As reefs decline, coral reef organisms may become dependent up habitats at the periphery of their distributions. The objectives of this dissertation were to determine the influence of habitat variability on population demographics, reproduction, survival, and the consequences to population connectivity of a common coral reef fish (bicolor damselfish: Stegastes partitus) across the Florida Shelf and the depth distribution of the species. Assessing demographic plasticity and habitat suitability for a model species across depth strata (SS: shallow shelf …

Melodious Marketing: The Intentions Of Music In T.V. Commercials, Katelyn Reithel

University Honors Program

Whether intentional or not, music seems to be an important element in television commercials. This thesis will determine exactly how effective music is and if a company’s marketing team considers using music to reach a specific advertising goal. To do this, several areas are discussed including psychomusicology (the effects of music on a human’s responses) in relation to emotional response and memorability, music’s effect of brand attitude and purchasing intentions made by consumers, the use of jingles, effects of T.V. commercials on the music industry, and the challenges that may arise by using music in a T.V. commercial. Regardless of …

The Young Radio Lobe Of 3c 84: Inferred Gas Properties In The Central 10 Pc, Yutaka Fujita, Nozomu Kawakatu, Isaac Shlosman, Hirotaka Ito

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We analyse the environment of the supermassive black hole (SMBH) in the centre of a massive elliptical galaxy NGC 1275 in the Perseus cluster, hosting the radio source 3C 84. We focus on the young radio lobe observed inside the estimated Bondi accretion radius, and discusss the momentum balance between the jet associated with the lobe and the surrounding gas. The results are compared with the proper motion of the radio lobe obtained with the very long baseline interferometry. We find that under assumption of a high-density environment ( ≳ 100 cm−3), the jet power must be comparable …

A Determination Of The Gamma-Ray Flux And Photon Spectral Index Distributions Of Blazars From The Fermi-Lat 3lac, Jack Singal Nov 2015

A Determination Of The Gamma-Ray Flux And Photon Spectral Index Distributions Of Blazars From The Fermi-Lat 3lac, Jack Singal

Physics Faculty Publications

We present a determination of the distributions of gamma-ray photon flux – the so-called LogN–LogS relation – and photon spectral index for blazars, based on the third extragalactic source catalogue of the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope's Large Area Telescope, and considering the photon energy range from 100 MeV to 100 GeV. The data set consists of the 774 blazars in the so-called Clean sample detected with a greater than approximately 7σ detection threshold and located above ±20° Galactic latitude. We use non-parametric methods verified in previous works to reconstruct the intrinsic distributions from the observed ones …
