Playing The 'Blame Game': Accounting And The Construction Of Disruptive Behaviour In Family Interviews, G Blanchard, Tc Auburn, R Dallos Nov 2015

Playing The 'Blame Game': Accounting And The Construction Of Disruptive Behaviour In Family Interviews, G Blanchard, Tc Auburn, R Dallos

More Faculty of Health Research

Systemic conceptualisations suggest that family processes which involve blaming and holding the child accountable for their behaviour play an important role in the maintenance of disruptive behaviour problems. Discourse analytic work in family therapy settings has shown that accountability for the family’s reported problems is a key concern for family members. This study used a conversation analytic (CA) approach to examine family members’ accounts of child disruptive behaviour. The two participating families were both engaged in family therapy for disruptive behaviour problems. Each family participated in a family interview which was recorded and transcribed according to CA principles. The analysis …

Curb Your Enthusiasm For Pigovian Taxes, Victor Fleischer Nov 2015

Curb Your Enthusiasm For Pigovian Taxes, Victor Fleischer

Faculty Scholarship

Pigovian (or “corrective”) taxes have been proposed or enacted on dozens of harmful products and activities: carbon, gasoline, fat, sugar, guns, cigarettes, alcohol, traffic, zoning, executive pay, and financial transactions, among others. Academics of all political stripes are mystified by the public’s inability to see the merits of using Pigovian taxes more frequently to address serious social harms, some even calling for the creation of a “Pigovian state.”

This academic enthusiasm for Pigovian taxes should be tempered. A Pigovian tax is easy to design—as a uniform excise tax—if one assumes that each individual causes the same amount of harm with …

Survey Examination Of How An Anonymous Source Gains Credibility In The Political Discourse: @Karametwatan Twitter Account As An Example, Yousef A. Aldaihani

Student Theses and Dissertations

The present study investigated how anonymous sources on Twitter can gain credibility by Twitter users. The researcher examined @karametwatan Twitter account as an example of anonymous sources. A formulated theory, Anonymous Leaders was employed in order to test its assumptions. The Effects Of Bullying On The Lives Of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, And Transgendered Students Who Attended High School In Shelby County, Tennessee., Sherry Waterman Chatman

Student Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the effects of bullying on the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) students age 18 to 25 who attended high schools in Shelby County, Tennessee. A qualitative research method was utilized to examine and determine the perception of fifty-three lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered youth homophobic experiences while attending high school. The study obtained the perceptions of LGBT youth based on the following questions: (1) What do LGBT youth believe are the reasons for homophobic bullying?, (2) How do acts of homophobic bullying affect, mentally and emotionally, the lives of those involved?, (3) And what …

Direct And Indirect Effects Of The Caribbean Cymothoid Parasite Anilocra Haemuli On Host Energetics, Behavior, And Trophic Interactions, Rachel Lynn Welicky Nov 2015

Direct And Indirect Effects Of The Caribbean Cymothoid Parasite Anilocra Haemuli On Host Energetics, Behavior, And Trophic Interactions, Rachel Lynn Welicky

Student Theses and Dissertations

The majority of coral reef research focuses on organisms that are familiar to humans, yet 80% of coral reef animals are parasites. Research on the direct effects of parasitism has suggested that hosts may undergo both behavioral and physiological changes. These changes may manifest at the ecosystem level, yet evidence of such changes are scarce. The objectives of this study were to investigate the direct and indirect effects of the Caribbean cymothoid parasite Anilocra haemuli on Haemulon flavolineatum (French grunt) energetics, behavior and trophic interactions. I conducted field surveys to measure A. haemuli prevalence of infection and determine its association …

Soybean Irrigation Initiation Timing Using Evapotranspiration And Soil Moisture Sensor Cues, Justin Chlapecka Nov 2015

Soybean Irrigation Initiation Timing Using Evapotranspiration And Soil Moisture Sensor Cues, Justin Chlapecka

Student Theses and Dissertations

Expanded use of irrigation management tools is needed to improve water use efficiency in eastern Arkansas soybean (Glycine max) production. Irrigation initiation timing was studied on a furrow irrigated, sandy loam commercial field in Mississippi County. A major objective was to develop, validate, and expand use of irrigation timing cues, incorporating local weather station data, atmometers, and soil moisture measurements. Four timing treatments were evaluated: early, recommended, late, and rainfed, and the crop and pest response to each. With above average rainfall in 2014 and 2015, results showed little variation of soybean yield. Yield monitor data indicated penalties only within …

Mass Media: From The Pulpit To The Pew Of Christian Churches, Lisa Colleen Bonds-Brown Nov 2015

Mass Media: From The Pulpit To The Pew Of Christian Churches, Lisa Colleen Bonds-Brown

Student Theses and Dissertations

As technology becomes more integrated with our daily lives, Christian churches and religious organizations are using media as part of their ministries. In addition to 21st-century technologies such as Twitter and Facebook, ministries also use traditional forms of media to expand their reach and spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This research will explore how churches are using multiple media technologies to spread the Gospel of Christ and communicate with both believers and non-believers in a world consumed by media. The Diffusion of Innovation Theory will guide this research.

Engineering Novel Glycopeptides As A Molecular Carrier For Thermostable E1 Endoglucanase Expressed In Planta, Hong Fang Nov 2015

Engineering Novel Glycopeptides As A Molecular Carrier For Thermostable E1 Endoglucanase Expressed In Planta, Hong Fang

Student Theses and Dissertations

Reengineering plant cell walls with cell wall-modifying enzymes (CWMEs) represents a promising solution to overcome the recalcitrance for lignocellulosic biomass efficient conversion to liquid biofuels. This project investigated innovative application of hydroxyproline (Hyp)-O-glycosylation to engineer novel glycopeptide tags for heterologous CWMEs to maximize their hydrolytic functions in cell walls without disrupting composition and architecture. I addressed the hypothesis that a strategically designed glycopeptide tag fused to thermostable E1 endoglucanase and expressed in tobacco will facilitate the enzyme deposition into cell wall matrix to make the resulting biomass more subject to biochemical saccharification, while not adversely affecting the normal growth of …
