Foreign Policy Rhetoric In The 1992 Presidential Campaign: Bill Clinton’S Exceptionalist Jeremiad, Jason A. Edwards

Speaker & Gavel

This essay examines presidential candidate Bill Clinton’s rhetoric regarding America’s role in the world during the 1992 presidential campaign. Despite the fact that foreign policy was George H.W. Bush’s strength during the campaign, candidate Clinton was able to develop a coherent vision for America’s role in the world that he carried into his presidency. I argue he did so by fusing together the American exceptionalist missions of exemplar and intervention. In doing so, Clinton altered a tension embedded in debates over U.S. foreign policy rhetoric. To further differentiate his candidacy from President Bush, Clinton encased this discourse within a secular …

Converted measurement tracking is a technique that filters in the coordinate system where the underlying process of interest is linear and Gaussian, and requires the measurements to be nonlinearly transformed to fit. The goal of the transformation is to allow for tracking in the coordinate system that is most natural for describing system dynamics. There are two potential issues that arise when performing converted measurement tracking. The first is conversion bias that occurs when the measurement transformation introduces a bias in the expected value of the converted measurement. This dissertation examines the history and role of Enlisted Women in the Air National Guard, 1968-2012. By examining this previously undocumented agency of women's history, I clarify the political and cultural dynamics that directly factored into the accession of women as enlisted members of the Air National Guard. This dissertation includes a brief look at some of the major highlights of women throughout history from around the world who took up arms during periods of conflict to defend their homes and families. Human beings to a great extent are what community stories narrate about them. This paper is informed by an ethnological field research carried in one of the remotest villages of Mucwini Sub-county in Kitgum district, northern Uganda, scrutinizes people’s stories as they echo concerns about justice from different perspectives of victimhood in the aftermath of a Lord’s Resistance Army-commanded massacre which claimed the lives of 56 people in a night, the majority of whom (21) were from the Pajong clan. Students at the beginning levels of foreign language study have many borders to cross and many challenges to negotiate. This paper reports the results of a preliminary study involving the use of full-length films to engender intercultural sensitivity and understanding among two groups of first-year students of Spanish. Both films depict hardships of children in Spanish-speaking countries—as a result of conscription or as a result of child labor. The paper discusses the contextualization of the films for the students, the students’ responses to questionnaires, portions of classroom discussion that indicate growth in the areas of focus, and implications of the …

Beyond established associations between Milton’s Satan and the poet himself, I argue that Milton’s Satan, specifically in Book Nine of Paradise Lost, is a direct reflection of Milton, his career as a poet, and his precarious position in attempting to create a conclusion to his epic that does justice to the extraordinary narration of pre-fall history in Books I through IX. I will use a psychoanalytic approach in discussing what I believe to be Milton’s overwhelming desire to solidify his own position in the English literary canon, and the anxiety he seems to experience in a state of creative limbo. …

The DNA damage response (DDR) is a complex and interconnected signaling network that dictates whether a cell repairs itself and survives or is damaged beyond repair and eliminated; therefore the proteins in this network must be tightly regulated in order to ensure genomic integrity. Conversely, mutational or epigenetic inactivation of DDR components leads to genomic instability, a hallmark of cancer. Indeed there is a high frequency of DDR defects in human cancers of which mutations in the DDR effector and tumor suppressor protein p53 are the best characterized and occur in greater than 50% of all human cancers. While civic engagement continues to be a buzzword in political science, there is still a lack of discussion about what practices work, and in what context. In particular, are there certain initiatives to engage that do particularly well at twoyear colleges versus larger universities? What about colleges with diverse student populations? At the 2014 annual meeting of the Midwest Political Science Association, seven scholar-teachers came together to discuss civic engagement at their respective institutions and to share ideas about what worked. In June 2014 an Expert Panel on Technology and Innovation in UN Peacekeeping was commissioned to examine how technology and innovation could strengthen peacekeeping missions. The panel's report argues for wider deployment of advanced technologies, including greater use of ground and airborne sensors and other technical sources of data, advanced data analytics and information fusion to assist in data integration. This article explores the emerging intelligence-led, informationist conception of UN peacekeeping against the backdrop of increasingly complex peacekeeping mandates and precarious security conditions. Very broadly, friendship can be defined as a particular relationship between individuals that is reciprocal in nature. On the one hand, it is a relationship that is universal, but on the other hand friendship is a concept that is socially constructed and historicized through the meanings and functions a particular society gives to it and the ways in which the relationship is realized and performed. Furthermore, friendship is as much an idea as it is a lived experience. This dissertation examines friendship among women in medieval Italian cities of the thirteenth– and fourteenth– centuries. This dissertation addresses community belonging, community building, and community identity of women in the city of Granada during the early modern period, showing how women made use of their Granadan social context. It situates the women of Granada in the context of the economic and social turmoil throughout the early modern period, and in particular of the seventeenth century. Non-elite urban women in early modern Granada actively shaped the civic economy, culture, and religious life of the city and, in turn, their lives were shaped by the interplay of these elements. Bruce Ackerman’s influential theory of “dualist democracy” posits that in American history some extraordinary moments of constitution- making are “constitutional moments,” distinguishable from other periods of ordinary lawmaking. What is missing from the Ackermanian account of constitutional moments, however, is a deeper appreciation of the nature of popular protests, specifically that they may sometimes constitute the core of a constitutional moment, but on other occasions, they may serve as a very different inflection point in the evolution of a constitutional democracy. Since the liquid sampling-atmospheric pressure glow discharge (LS-APGD) was first developed as an excitation source for atomic emission spectroscopy, it has been improved upon and demonstrated as an ionization source for elemental mass spectrometry, molecular mass spectrometry, and ambient desorption mass spectrometry. Multiple functions coming from one package allowed the LS-APGD to hold a unique position among all atmospheric pressure glow discharges. It also has the capabilities to work with different sample forms including liquids, bulk solids, and solution residues. The high salt/matrix tolerance reduces sample prep work and thus provides convenience for its potential use as a field-Based ionization …

This thesis aims to explore the tension with how Edmund Spenser uses images and the method of ekphrasis and how they lead to interpretive tension on the part of the reader in the epic poem The Faerie Queene. Close readings of selected passages within Book III of The Faerie Queene as well as discussion of secondary scholarship pertaining to the piece will be used in this research. The study will conclude with how Spenser as the author was able to use interpretive tension to serve his pedagogical aims in writing this work. | 39 pages
