With famous lines like “On, on, you noblest English!,” and “This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England,” Shakespeare’s plays—especially the histories— are famous for their role in creating and glorifying English national identity. But equally important to an understanding of Shakespeare’s canon are minority British identities, and of these the most prevalent and most overlooked are the Welsh. This thesis focuses on Shakespeare’s Welsh characters, their roles and presentations, and chooses to examine the often paradoxical portrayals of such Welsh characters. This thesis examines the use of private military contractors (PMCs) in small-scale military missions, using the case study of American counternarcotics and counterinsurgency aid for Plan Colombia as an example. During the early 2000s and beyond, the United States relied heavily on private companies to support its assistance package to the Colombian government. Political limits on U.S. involvement in the country led U.S. officials to attempt to preserve operational flexibility in part by transferring casualty risks away from the military and toward employees of private companies. While many scholars have written about ‘spoilers,’ actors committed to the use of violence in an effort to undermine political negotiations, there have been few attempts to systematically test whether theories of spoiling behavior truly effectively explain armed nonstate actors’ use of force. Using a combination of GIS mapping, statistical analysis, and qualitative data gathered from interviews in Belfast, Northern Ireland, I examine the lines of division that formed within Northern Irish paramilitaries during the peace process of the 1990s. Airstrikes have been thrust into the spotlight recently, in part because of their integral role in the campaign against the Islamic State but also because of the Saudi bombing campaign in Yemen. In fact, air power has long been a critical component of U.S. strategy in counterinsurgency warfare. If we are to continue to use airstrikes in order to fight violent extremism, we must understand their effects on local security. Yet relatively little satisfying research exists which explores the effects of airstrikes on local levels of violence. The effectiveness of drone strikes as a counterterrorism measure is the core of U.S policymakers’ arguments for their continued use. With Yemen becoming a critical topic of national security due to the growing strength of al Qaeda in the Arab Peninsula (AQAP), an assessment about the effectiveness of drone strikes should allow for officials and critics alike to evaluate the tradeoffs associated with drone warfare. This thesis studies the impact of US counterterrorism policy on AQAP violence using regression analysis and qualitative methods.

Excerpt: "The goal of this chapter is to show how Woodworth-Etter and McPherson constructed visual representations of themselves as ministers. It begins by discussing how male ministers projected power through dress, and then examines how female ministers negotiated their outward appearance in response to male attire. Then, this chapter demonstrates how Woodworth-Etter and McPherson aimed not to give a female version of male attire, but to give a visual representation of the biblical women that they claimed to be."

The controversial MRAPs raise two questions. First, does the MRAP experience support the contention that the Pentagon is not sufficiently able to field irregular warfare capabilities? Second, what factors best explain the MRAP failure, whether that failure is determined to be their delayed fielding or the fact that they were fielded at all? We conclude that MRAPs are a valid irregular warfare requirement and that the Pentagon should have been better prepared to field them, albeit not on the scale demanded by events in Iraq. Climate, tectonics, and drainage-basin characteristics dictate the conditions that control the discharge and sediment dynamics of rivers in continental interiors. Fluvial-system response and a partial human record have been recorded in valley landscapes. Regional patterns in the timing of sedimentation in the present day Midwestern United States have been recognized in several case studies throughout the region. However, there is much more that can be done to better understand climate change and climate responses in the region and particularly along the Wabash River in Indiana and its tributary streams. During the autumn of 1870, a massive flood engulfed parts of Virginia, West Virginia, and Maryland. The turbid waters claimed over 100 lives and left communities and residents along the James, Shenandoah, Potomac, Rappahannock, Anna, Rivanna, Maury, Middle, South, Staunton, Rockfish, Tye, and Pamunkey Rivers in varying states of distress. At least one quarter of Virginia was affected by the storm and subsequent flooding, making it significant to multiple areas of the State through the loss of life, property, and infrastructure.

Developing an improved methodology for efficient and informative hearing assessment in marine mammals would prove insightful in expanding current knowledge regarding marine mammal hearing sensitivity, particularly in studying the effects of anthropogenic noise. This study examines the click-evoked auditory brainstem response in relation to upper frequency limit of hearing in the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) as a proxy for hearing capacity.

The grain protectant efficacy of Makabuhay, Tinospora rumphii stem extract was tested on adult maize weevil, Sitophilus zeamais M. Evaluation of phytochemicals present in the extract was conducted to identify its bioactive compounds. The ethanolic stem extract of T. rumphii contains the following phytochemicals: alkaloids, flavonoids, steroids and tannins. These phytochemicals are known to possess pesticidal activities against insects and other pests. The grain protectant efficacy of T. rumphii against corn weevils was manifested by the percentage of mortality of weevils, number of corn seed holes; weight loss and percentage corn germination. This thesis explores the curation of aliʻi collections in the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum and the Lyman House Memorial Museum. The aliʻi were once the ruling class of Hawai'i, whose chiefly ranks and statuses reflected their prestigious and complicated moʻokūʻauhau (genealogies). Although the aliʻi are no longer a visible social class in Hawai'i, their moʻokūʻauhau (genealogies) and moʻolelo (stories) are continually honored and preserved within the walls of museums. Through the use of a research design that draws from multiple museologies, indigenous epistemologies, and anthropological theories and methods, I examine the physical care, storage, exhibition, and interpretation of aliʻi collections, …

A rhetorical approach to the fiction of war offers an appropriate vehicle by which one may encounter and interrogate such literature and the cultural metanarratives that exist therein. My project is a critical analysis—one that relies heavily upon Kenneth Burke’s dramatistic method and his concepts of scapegoating, the comic corrective, and hierarchical psychosis—of three war novels published in 2012 (The Yellow Birds by Kevin Powers, FOBBIT by David Abrams, and Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk by Ben Fountain). Tracing An American Yoga: Identity And Cross-Cultural Transaction, Christa Schwind

This dissertation looks at the creative identity of an American yoga, both rooted in its Indic origins and radically transformed in its U.S. manifestations. It traces the broad historical transactions of yoga in terms of East and West, Secular and Religious, authenticity and idealized conception, as well as provides a critical historical genealogy of Anusara and Sridaiva yoga. Furthermore, the project relates yoga to the identity, power, and knowledge dynamics of pre-modern, modern, and postmodern histories and interpretations of yoga and Tantra, multiple theoretical discourses, and the embodied practices of individuals within Indian and American contexts.
