The Un, Regional Sanctions And Africa, Andrea Charron, Clara Portela
The Un, Regional Sanctions And Africa, Andrea Charron, Clara Portela
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Africa is the continent most targeted by sanctions. During the Cold War, when the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) was all but paralysed, the only sanctions regimes that the UN imposed were directed at countries located on the African continent: Southern Rhodesia and South Africa, penalized for their apartheid regimes. In the post-Cold War era, Africa has continued to register the highest frequency of sanctions, applied not only by the UN but by other organizations as well. Africa’s own regional bodies, such as the African Union (AU) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), are active in wielding …
High Value Lies, Ugly Truths, And The First Amendment, Alan K. Chen, Justin Marceau
High Value Lies, Ugly Truths, And The First Amendment, Alan K. Chen, Justin Marceau
Vanderbilt Law Review
Lying has a complicated relationship with the First Amendment. It is beyond question that some lies-such as perjury and fraud-are simply not covered by the Constitution's free speech clause.' But it is equally clear that some lies, even intentionally lying about military honors, are entitled to First Amendment protection. Until very recently, however, it has been taken for granted in Supreme Court doctrine and academic writing that any constitutional protection for lies is purely prophylactic-it provides protection to the truth-speaker by also incidentally protecting the liar. What remains unresolved is whether other rationales might also justify First Amendment protection for …

Luxury And Gender In European Towns, 1700–1914. Deborah Simonton, Marjo Kaartinen, And Anne Montenach (Eds), Fiona Williamson
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
The concept and consumption of ‘luxury’ was at the heart of many preconceptions about gender, status and identity during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Acting as a determinant of—yet also blurring the boundaries of—social class, luxury was a fundamental component of identity for both men and women. Towns operated as hubs in the luxury goods trade and urban inhabitants were the main producers and consumers of the newest fashions. This collection of essays, stemming from the pan-European Gender in European Towns Network launched in 2006, seeks to explore how luxury connected to, and shaped, urban senses of self and status …

Slut Pride: The Reappropriation Attempt By Slutwalk, Siena C. Noe
Slut Pride: The Reappropriation Attempt By Slutwalk, Siena C. Noe
Quercus: Linfield Journal of Undergraduate Research
This study examined an open letter created by the Black Women’s Blueprint Organization in response to the reappropriation of the term “slut” in SlutWalk Toronto, a protest march against rape culture. Using Burke’s cluster criticism method, it evaluates the effectiveness of this rhetorical strategy through the lenses of race, ethnicity, and socio-economic differences. This study enables those involved in the movement to move forward productively, more inclusively. The research questions addressed are as follows, the latter acting as a sub question of the first: (1) In regards to United States Third Wave feminist goals, are SlutWalks achieving the desired long-term …

Driskell, Dana, Bronx African American History Project
Oral Histories
Interviewee: Dana Driskell
Interviewers: Mark Naison, Mark Smith
Transcribed By: Colleen McCafferty
Summarized By: Eddie Mikus
Dana Driskell is a former student at Fordham University who has since worked for the New York City planning commission. He told the Bronx African-American History Project about some of the social changes that have occurred in the Bronx during his life, as well as his time at Fordham University.
Driskell said that his father worked as a sheet metal worker who often worked in construction. Although Driskell’s father belonged to a union, he said that his father often experienced discrimination that was prevalent …
