Costa Rican Composer Luis Diego Herra And His Symphony I An Annotated Edition, Norman Armando Gamboa
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Luis Diego Herra (b. 1952) is regarded as one of the most important and versatile Costa Rican musicians of the present generation. A pioneer in the orchestral conducting arena, he was one of the first Central American conductors to pursue formal studies abroad. He served as professor of orchestral conducting and composition at the University of Costa Rica School of Music. Herra is a prolific composer, arranger, editor, and pedagogue, with an extensive output of more than 50 works. This research will focus on one of his most relevant compositions, the Symphony I of 1990, which marked a new chapter …
Alexander Moyzes And His Piano Sonata In The Context Of Slovak Music Between The Wars, Ivan Koska
Alexander Moyzes And His Piano Sonata In The Context Of Slovak Music Between The Wars, Ivan Koska
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this monograph is to introduce to the English-speaking public the Slovak twentieth-century composer Alexander Moyzes and his Piano Sonata in E Minor, Op. 2 (1942), virtually unknown outside Slovakia. The style of the Sonata represents a retreat from earlier, more experimental positions of its author; this shift can be explained by a closer look at historical and aesthetic circumstances surrounding its composition. The first chapter provides an essential biography of the composer with an emphasis on his life and works between 1925 and 1940. The second chapter compares single movements of the Sonata with earlier manuscripts and …
Political Conspiracy In Napoleonic France, Kelly Diane Jernigan
Political Conspiracy In Napoleonic France, Kelly Diane Jernigan
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
An in-depth analysis of primary source material indicates that the conspiracies hatched against Napoleon served as the impetus for his decision to change the government from the Consulate to the Empire. His ambitious personality drove him to achieve as much power and prestige for himself as possible, a point discussed by numerous historians, but the conspiratorial actions designed to strike him down provided the opportunity. He was a master of manipulating situations—and people—in order to achieve his ambitious goals. Knowing that his constituents worried over renewed political turmoil if something happened to him, Napoleon used their fears to strengthen his …

“Princes Upon Stages”: The Theatricalization Of Monarchy In The Reign Of Elizabeth I, 1558-1569, Kimberly Reynolds Rush
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The reign of Elizabeth I of England is one of the most celebrated reigns in history and is renowned for the renaissance of the arts, theater, and culture. Authors, playwrights, and artists venerated her in their art in what became known as the Cult of Gloriana. At her accession, however, her position was far from secure. Many considered her illegitimate and she was a female entering a male-dominated world. In addition, Elizabeth inherited a religiously divided nation. In response to this, Elizabeth and her councilors initiated a propaganda campaign that created an image of Elizabeth as a wise, just, and …

Mark Twain, James Thurber, And David Sedaris: American Literary Humorists, Liz Sills
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This analysis probes the unique nature of the American Literary Humorist by looking at three exemplary cases of this type of figure: Mark Twain, James Thurber, and David Sedaris. Rather than dissecting their works to the point that they become unfunny, this piece examines their interaction with the times and publics that form their audiences. Doing so allows us to better understand their resonance both during their own times and today and gives us a better look at what really makes them stand out in the history of American letters.
Homenaje A García Lorca, A Conductor’S Approach, Alejandro Artemio Larumbe Martínez
Homenaje A García Lorca, A Conductor’S Approach, Alejandro Artemio Larumbe Martínez
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this dissertation is to provide a conductor’s analysis of the Mexican composer Silvestre Revueltas’s Homenaje a García Lorca from research of his work and life. Revueltas wrote Homenaje a García Lorca, a chamber orchestral piece, in response to the murder of the Spanish poet Federico García Lorca in 1936 during the Spanish Civil War. Homenaje is orchestrated for twelve instruments in three contrasting movements: Baile (dance), Duelo (mourning), and Son (son is the name of a genre of traditional Mexican music). Homenaje is widely regarded as one of Revueltas’s most compelling works. It combines a highly personal …
Defining Competence In Obstetric Epidural Anaesthesia For Inexperienced Trainees, E. J. Drake, J. Coghill, J. R. Sneyd
Defining Competence In Obstetric Epidural Anaesthesia For Inexperienced Trainees, E. J. Drake, J. Coghill, J. R. Sneyd
Peninsula Medical School
Background: Cumulative sum (CUSUM) analysis has been used for assessing competence of trainees learning new technical skills. One of its disadvantages is the required definition of acceptable and unacceptable success rates. We therefore monitored the development of competence amongst trainees new to obstetric epidural anaesthesia in a large public hospital. Methods: Obstetric epidural data were collected prospectively between January 1996 and December 2011. Success rates for inexperienced trainees were calculated retrospectively for (1) the whole database, (2) for each consecutive attempt and (3) each trainee's individual overall success rate. Acceptable and unacceptable success rates were defined and CUSUM graphs generated …

Data Services And The Performing Arts, Amy Jackson, Jon Wheeler, Todd Quinn
University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications
In the academic world, research is primarily seen through the scientific approach of collecting and interpreting scientific or numeric data, or the humanistic approach of comparing and interpreting texts. However, in the performing arts fields, academics see themselves on a spectrum between scholar and artist. Artistic scholarly research activities are often driven by the same requirements as humanities research. However, as artists, research often takes the form of listening to or watching performances. In this approach, performances and recordings are research data to these academics. How can libraries support this method of research? What are the implications for data curation …
The Changing Landscape Of Trademark Law In Tinseltown: From Debbie Does Dallas To The Hangover, John Tehranian, Mark Bartholomew
The Changing Landscape Of Trademark Law In Tinseltown: From Debbie Does Dallas To The Hangover, John Tehranian, Mark Bartholomew
Contributions to Books
This Essay, a chapter published in the book Hollywood and the Law (Palgrave Macmillan / British Film Institute, 2015), explores how courts have sought to balance the competing interests at stake when filmmakers make unauthorized uses of trademarks in their work and brand owners threaten liability for infringement. Using the seminal Rogers v. Grimaldi decision as a key pivot point, the Essay traces the remarkable change in approaches that courts have taken to First Amendment defenses in trademark cases in the past few decades. In presenting case studies of two opinions -- Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, Inc. v. Pussycat Cinema, Ltd. …
Finding A Place For Cacega Ayuwipi Within The Structure Of American Indian Music And Dance Traditions, Adam Eric Berkowitz
Finding A Place For Cacega Ayuwipi Within The Structure Of American Indian Music And Dance Traditions, Adam Eric Berkowitz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
American Indian music and dance traditions unilaterally contain the following three elements: singing, dancing, and percussion instruments. Singing and dancing are of the utmost importance in American Indian dance traditions, while the expression of percussion instruments is superfluous. Louis W. Ballard has composed a piece of music for percussion ensemble which was inspired by the music and dance traditions of American Indian tribes from across North America. The controversy that this presents is relative to the fact that there is no American Indian tradition for a group comprised exclusively of percussion instruments. However, this percussion ensemble piece, Cacega Ayuwipi, does …

Each year over 300 million people visit theme parks, making them the major vacation destination worldwide. Theme parks are known for their elaborate spectacle, the creation of artificial realities through intricate immersive experiences including costumed characters, stage shows, and extravagant decor. Though many aspects of the theme park experience have been reviewed, little focus has been given to the role of food in the overall immersion, particularly how food extends the spectacle into a fantastical created reality. This study examined the function of food within a highly immersive theme park setting, and how it contributed to the overall illusion and …

Toxic Island Et L’Empreinte À Crusoé : L’Individuation De L’Identité Franco-Antillaise, Kimberley Jurawan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Within the Caribbean, the islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique are unusual: they are French overseas departments and thus also European Union members. As such, they must assimilate to French national culture even though their heterogeneous populations, mainly descendants of exploited imported labour, have their own unique island identity. Their heavy economic dependence on France and the effects of modernization and globalization pose further identitarian challenges for them. Franco-Antillean literature clearly reflects this long-standing identity confusion. This thesis explores two very recent novels— Toxic Island by Guadeloupean Ernest Pépin and L’Empreinte à Crusoé by Martinican Patrick Chamoiseau— and their divergent stylistic …

The Orphanage Of Things: A Narrative Of Abandonment, Malaz Elgemiabby
The Orphanage Of Things: A Narrative Of Abandonment, Malaz Elgemiabby
Theses and Dissertations
In Sudan, 110 babies are abandoned in the streets of Khartoum every month. The majority of abandoned children are born out of wedlock. Young women with illegitimate pregnancies are often ostracized by their families and society, and the lack of emotional, financial and legal support has led many to take desperate measures, including the abandonment of their children. Relinquishing mothers exist like ghosts in Sudanese society. The only evidence of the mother’s experience is her anonymous, abandoned child. In order to understand and examine this phenomenon, I used ethnographic performance art informed by design research practice (Performative Research Design). I …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study conceptualized the desired domain of student learning in the first year of college as it pertains to a success program serving first-time, full-time undecided students at a land-grant and high research activity classified university. Trochim's Concept Mapping/Pattern Matching approach, an exploratory mixed methods research methodology, was used to collect and analyze data. The researcher sought the contribution of 23 participants including sixteen students, and seven faculty and staff members involved in the success program. As a group, participants generated 100 statements representing desired learning outcomes. They individually sorted the items into groups and rated them for relative importance …
“Great Nature, Refuge Of The Weary Heart:” A Regional And Literary Exploration Of The Early Grove Plays Of The Bohemian Club, Jeremy Denouden
“Great Nature, Refuge Of The Weary Heart:” A Regional And Literary Exploration Of The Early Grove Plays Of The Bohemian Club, Jeremy Denouden
Master's Theses
In 1872, a group of San Francisco newspapermen came together to start their own men’s club. This group, which named itself the Bohemian Club, was an outgrowth and a representative of the rapid development of the city of San Francisco at that time. Shortly after its founding, the club began making an annual retreat to the redwood forests north of the city. Eventually, the club began producing elaborate performances of musical dramas, referred to as Grove Plays, written and performed exclusively for club members at these summer retreats. This thesis, which takes its name from a line in one of …

Walt Kuhn: From Spotlight To Studio, The Art Of Show Business, Emily May Mcewan-Upright
Master's Theses
Walt Kuhn, an American artist born in New York, is often overlooked for his contribution to Modern American Art. Kuhn is typically recognized for his organizational and curatorial role in the 1913 Armory Show, but he was also internationally known in his time for his paintings of show people and as a creative director for several vaudeville and circus acts over his lifetime. During his career as a creative director, Kuhn’s artwork evolved from superficial renderings of theatre scenes to psychologically intense tronies of performers. Kuhn and other American artists, including the Ashcan group and Edward Hopper, examined the relationship …

Passing Crisis And Emergency Risk Communications: The Effects Of Communication Channel, Information Type, And Repetition., Judy Edworthy, Elizabeth Hellier, Lex Newbold, Kirsteen Titchener
School of Psychology
Three experiments explore several factors which influence information transmission when warning messages are passed from person to person. In Experiment 1, messages were passed down chains of participants using five different modes of communication. Written communication channels resulted in more accurate message transmission than verbal. In addition, some elements of the message endured further down the chain than others. Experiment 2 largely replicated these effects and also demonstrated that simple repetition of a message eliminated differences between written and spoken communication. In a final field experiment, chains of participants passed information however they wanted to, with the proviso that half …

Performance And Resilience: Performance, Storytelling, And Resilience Building In Post-Katrina New Orleans, Sophia Colette Becker
Honors Papers
"Performance and Resilience: Performance, Storytelling, and Resilience Building in Post-Katrina New Orleans" uses a mixed method approach to investigate the role of digital storytelling and contemporary performing arts in building community and environmental resilience. Through semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and scholarship from the fields of performance studies and environmental studies, this piece focuses on post-disaster landscapes, particularly post-Katrina New Orleans, to investigate the impact of storytelling platforms and performance spaces in retaining social and cultural memory.
Shifting Authority At The Confederate Relic Room, 1960-1986, Kristie L. Dafoe
Shifting Authority At The Confederate Relic Room, 1960-1986, Kristie L. Dafoe
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the Confederate Relic Room and its final years in the hands of the United Daughters of the Confederacy before the South Carolina state government fully took over the museum. This small, localized perspective on the organization shows that the UDC was still actively commemorating the Civil War well into the late twentieth century, which challenges the current historiography that consistently ends in the 1930s. By researching this museum, insight into how the UDC’s mission and public perception had changed can be gained. In order to fully examine the museum’s history in the late twentieth century, this thesis …

The Fancy Trade And The Commodification Of Rape In The Sexual Economy Of 19th Century U.S. Slavery, Tiye A. Gordon
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research is to examine the Fancy Trade—the buying and selling of mixed-race enslaved women for the primary purpose of prostitution and concubinage—through an intersectionality lens. Therefore, I will explore a culture of rape through the lived experiences of fancy maids, the women who were sold as sex commodities in the 19th century domestic slave trade. Who was she? Using an intersectionality framework to answer the proposed questions will achieve the following. First, it will highlight the social constructions of race, gender, and sexuality within the 19th century southern context. Secondly, an intersectional methodology will explore the …

***Blksavage: A Study On The Elements Of Traditional Radical Black Political Theories & Their Contributions To Contemporary Black Political Thought, Jestin B. Kusch
Senior Independent Study Theses
What mechanisms of the Traditional Radical Black Political Theorists' ideologies have crossed into Contemporary Black Political Thought, and how can these elements contribute to the progression of African Americans and racial equality in the United States, today? I approach the theorists (Malcolm X; Huey Newton; Angela Davis; Tupac Shakur; and Patricia Hill Collins) from a historical/ theoretical perspective, while avoiding narrative explanations of each individuals lives. My goal In this study was to do a critical comparative analysis - both within the respective times (1960-1985; 1985-present), and through a cross time analysis to answer my research question. I finally offer …

The Lost "Art" Of The Patent System, Sean M. O'Connor
The Lost "Art" Of The Patent System, Sean M. O'Connor
Articles
Patent systems emerged in the early modern period of the West to incentivize development and dissemination of skills-based artisanal innovations. This approach appears to have been adopted by the Framers in drafting the Intellectual Property Clause.
Only later, in the Industrial Revolution, did ‘‘science’’ and ‘‘technology’’ begin to displace ‘‘art’’ as the perceived object of the U.S. patent system. This was in large part because of the emergence of the concept of ‘‘technology’’ itself as science-based innovation in artisanal and mechanized production.
The loss of an ‘‘art’’-based concept of the patent system is arguably causing some of the confusion over …
Estudio Y Edición De La Más Constante Mujer De Juan Pérez De Montalbán, Philip Allen
Estudio Y Edición De La Más Constante Mujer De Juan Pérez De Montalbán, Philip Allen
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
La más constante mujer is a Spanish Golden Age play written by Juan Pérez de Montalbán in 1631 and published for the first time in 1632. Although he was once one of the most famous playwrights in Madrid, known for running in the same literary and social circles as Lope de Vega and Calderón de la Barca, the bulk of the dramatist's work has been greatly ignored by scholars, or is referred to as being of second rate, and the author himself has nearly tragically been forgotten throughout the centuries following his short life. Although research has been conducted to …
