Taking inspiration from the blend of art and technology present in modern theatre, ShowRunner is a suite of software designed to enable automation of multimedia systems typically operated as part of a larger ensemble. It enables one computer to command a network of devices that typically each require the attention of a whole human. In other words, it allows the coordination of multimedia presentations ahead of time so that only one technician is necessary when a performance occurs.

On The Distinction Between Speech And Action, Frederick Schauer Jan 2015

On The Distinction Between Speech And Action, Frederick Schauer

Emory Law Journal

Does the First Amendment rest on a mistake? More specifically, is the First Amendment¿s necessary distinction between speech and action fundamentally unsustainable? The basic idea of this Article is that it is hardly clear that respect for an agent¿s autonomy ought to lead other agents, or the state, to tolerate autonomous communicative actions that are determined to be likely to cause harm to third parties any more than they should tolerate autonomous non-communicative actions whose consequences are equivalent. If the principle of freedom to engage in autonomous actions is one that is limited to cases of harm to others, then, …

Uncertainty Is The Only Certainty: A Five-Category Test To Clarify The Unsure Boundaries Between Content-Based And Content-Neutral Restrictions On Speech, Jay Alan Sekulow, Erik M. Zimmerman Jan 2015

Uncertainty Is The Only Certainty: A Five-Category Test To Clarify The Unsure Boundaries Between Content-Based And Content-Neutral Restrictions On Speech, Jay Alan Sekulow, Erik M. Zimmerman

Emory Law Journal

The lines between content-neutral, content-based, and viewpoint-based restrictions on speech remain unclear in key respects despite the critical importance that these characterizations hold within First Amendment jurisprudence. This Article will analyze the law concerning the boundaries between these categories of laws with respect to speech activities in public and limited forums. The Article argues that five categories of laws are inherently suspect under the Free Speech Clause and should be treated as such. Formal recognition by the Court that laws of this nature should be subject to strict scrutiny would bring much needed clarity to this area of law and …

The Real And The Ideal In Ri National Guard Uniform Practices, Christine Lee Callaghan

Open Access Master's Theses

Dress and appearance are regulated in minute detail for members of the Rhode Island National Guard, as they are for all in the US military. In practice, adherence to these regulations is both imperfect and variable. This study explored the extent and form of variations from the ideal in Rhode Island National Guard uniform practices as well as the ideal military service-members are expected to emulate and how military uniform policies were enforced.

Individual interviews were conducted with thirteen former members of the RI National Guard. Topics of discussion included levels of strictness or laxity encountered, opinions on various uniforms …

Living In The Future Anterior: Trauma And Autobiography In The Work Of Vincent Chevalier And Francisco-Fernando Granados, Ricky Varghese Jan 2015

Living In The Future Anterior: Trauma And Autobiography In The Work Of Vincent Chevalier And Francisco-Fernando Granados, Ricky Varghese

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[From first paragraph]

What might be considered a now famous image in the long history and tradition of Western philosophical thought and the study of aesthetics sets the stage for the discussion to follow. The image being invoked here is that for which philosopher Walter Benjamin attempted to offer an ekphrasis. In his posthumously published Theses on the Philosophy of History, Benjamin offers a description to Paul Klee's painting Angelus Novus; his description is suggestive of the thematics of temporal dispossession and repossession, which will form the foundation for the analysis forged here. Benjamin described the angel of …

Privacy: An Issue Of Priority, Stephanie Segovia Jan 2015

Privacy: An Issue Of Priority, Stephanie Segovia

UC Law Business Journal

This note highlights the competing stakes in the online privacy debate. It provides an overview of the U.S. business model of companies that participate in data gathering and analysis, and why they do so (namely because of the emergence of Big Data technologies), and discusses examples of how online privacy has eroded in recent years, in turn highlighting the need for federal action. This note also discusses the current status quo of online privacy in America, and why current legislation is inadequate to address online privacy issues. It further includes a discussion of why the U.S. should let the new …

Finding The Middle Ground On A Slippery Slope: Balancing Autonomy And Protection In Mandatory Reporting Of Elder Abuse, Benjamin Pomerance Jan 2015

Finding The Middle Ground On A Slippery Slope: Balancing Autonomy And Protection In Mandatory Reporting Of Elder Abuse, Benjamin Pomerance

Marquette Benefits and Social Welfare Law Review

Millions of older Americans suffer from physical, mental, emotional, or financial abuse. Frequently, their abusers are family members, close friends, or other individuals who occupy positions of trust in their elderly victims’ lives. Unfortunately, due to a variety of factors, elder abuse is a tragically underreported crime. Experts estimate that for every case of elder abuse revealed to law enforcement authorities, five more cases go unreported, allowing the abuse to continue unchecked.

To combat this secrecy surrounding elder abuse, federal and state lawmakers enacted statutes requiring certain people— or, in some jurisdictions, all people—to report instances of suspected elder abuse …

The Creation And Reflection Of A Solo Show: Corner Of 26 And Lost, Margaret Mcgurn Jan 2015

The Creation And Reflection Of A Solo Show: Corner Of 26 And Lost, Margaret Mcgurn

LSU Master's Theses

We knew coming into this two-year M.F.A. program in June of 2013 that our thesis would culminate in December of 2014 with the performance of a solo show that we would each write and perform ourselves. So as early as out first summer here, we were encouraged to get the ball rolling with potential ideas. The thought this project was to not only give us practice at devising work, but also put a show in our back pocket. So, when we graduated, we would have a full-fledged show that we could take on the road and perform anywhere with little …

A Study Of Resiliency In New Orleans Neighborhoods Ten Years After Hurricane Katrina, Paul Ramnauth Algu

LSU Master's Theses

Hurricane Katrina made landfall on August 29, 2005, flooding over eighty percent of the Greater New Orleans area and causing a mass exodus of the local population. Statistical analysis was used to quantify recovery at a neighborhood level and answer the following questions: What is the recovery rate of New Orleans neighborhoods ten years after Hurricane Katrina? What factors account for variation in recovery rates among neighborhoods? Six neighborhoods in Orleans Parish were selected for further study based on their unique geographical and recovery metrics. Recovery rates among the seventy-two neighborhoods were based on a comparison of United States Postal …

Between Beauty And Duty: Ethics And Judgment In Camus And Kant, Alex Donovan Cole Jan 2015

Between Beauty And Duty: Ethics And Judgment In Camus And Kant, Alex Donovan Cole

LSU Master's Theses

The ideas of Albert Camus and Immanuel Kant are not often thought of as sharing pronounced similarities. However, both thinkers are deeply concerned with role of aesthetics in moral, and subsequently, political life. According to each, taste is a faculty whereby one is able to develop the “moral insight” needed for the flourishing of a robust, thoughtful, ethical individual. Yet, both Camus and Kant utilize highly divergent methodologies in going about this. Camus prefers the artistic form and poetic language offered by the novel and Kant prefers the logical rigor of critical philosophical arguments. This thesis hopes to reveal that …

High School Musicians' And Non-Musicians' Listening Preference For Authentic Versus Transcribed Musical Excerpts, Colin Douglas Caldarera

LSU Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to (a) determine high school musician’s and non-musician’s preference for authentic and transcribed orchestral and band recordings, and (b) examine participant perceptual responses regarding reasons for preference. Therefore, the following research questions guided this investigation: (a) To what extent do musicians’ and non-musicians’ preference ratings of paired musical selections (one played by band and one played by orchestra) differ when rated on a Likert scale after listening? and (b) What are the reasons for preferring one excerpt type over another? The participants were musicians (n = 40) and non-musicians (n = 40) in grades …

Jean Cocteau: Orpheus Narcissus, Gordon Elliott Walker Jan 2015

Jean Cocteau: Orpheus Narcissus, Gordon Elliott Walker

LSU Master's Theses

Over the course of thirty years, the poet and filmmaker Jean Cocteau created a singular artistic project he called the Orphic trilogy: Le Sang d’un poète (1930), Orphée (1950), and Le Testament d’Orphée (1959). This trilogy is marked by an Orphic pattern of a poet’s journey into an underworld to confront death. I will show that Cocteau’s invention is to have Orpheus be in love with death, for death to be an attractive and irresistible force to the poet. Simultaneously, Cocteau avails himself of the Narcissus myth, the man in love with his own reflection. Orpheus and Narcissus converge in …

Theatre Safety In Louisiana Secondary Schools: A Survey Study, Christopher Pyfrom Jan 2015

Theatre Safety In Louisiana Secondary Schools: A Survey Study, Christopher Pyfrom

LSU Master's Theses

Participation in secondary school theatre can have many benefits including the development of improved reading comprehension, self-concept, and empathy. In the world of professional theatre, each design area has its own department head and several levels of assistants and workers below them. Yet in the world of secondary school theatre, we expect one person to assume all of those roles in addition to the regular responsibilities of teaching. Not many people see theatre as being dangerous when compared to sports, science labs, or vocational education. However, it can contain many of the same risks. This study investigated several factors that …

Gender Euphoria: Photography, Fashion, And Gender Nonconformity In The East Village, Alicia Diane Ridout Jan 2015

Gender Euphoria: Photography, Fashion, And Gender Nonconformity In The East Village, Alicia Diane Ridout

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis investigates the link between art and fashion photography in the work of Peter Hujar and Nan Goldin, both of whom commented on the nature of gender identity. There is an extensive body of fashion-inspired images by both of these East Village photographers that falls into this category. The pictures they produced of gender-nonconforming individuals serve to comment on the restrictive nature of gender identities represented in fashion photography, and also to elevate the status of those pictured to that of fashion models. The unique cultural context of the East Village served as the perfect location for both photographers …

Words That Help: A Journey Through Expressive Writing, Jaede Ishikawa Jan 2015

Words That Help: A Journey Through Expressive Writing, Jaede Ishikawa

University Honors Theses

For the past three decades, researchers have studied the effects of "emotional writing" or "expressive writing" as a therapy tool, finding positive results for a myriad of chronic as well as intermittent psychological, emotional, and physical health issues. My interest in these findings, along with my academic interests in psychology and creative writing and my own experience with writing as therapy, led me to wonder if incorporating "expressive writing" techniques in a college setting would be beneficial. The few focused studies that have been done indeed show that it can be and my thesis aims to address a need for …

That Mysterious, Remisse Knot: Katherine Philips's Unincorporated Fraternity, Rene Kramer Jan 2015

That Mysterious, Remisse Knot: Katherine Philips's Unincorporated Fraternity, Rene Kramer

University Honors Theses

Recent critics in early modern poetry, women’s literature, and queer studies have attempted to factor Katherine Philips’s friendship poetry into a history of homoerotic suspicion. Her metaphysical poems have been offered as a publically significant, potential erotics of textual, rather than physical, embodiment. This thesis responds by returning to the significance of the in-significance of textual representations of feminine erotics, as well as to earlier criticism of Philips as a poet of non-public life and chastity. An examination of notions of innocence in Philips’s configurations of friendship highlights an excess of innocence and a passion predicated on exception, restraint, and …

An Expanded Perceptual Laboratory: Public Art And The Cinematic Techniques Of Superimposition, Montage And Apparatus/Dispositif, Dave Colangelo

School of Film Faculty Publications and Presentations

The use of the moving image in public space extends the techniques of cinema— namely superimposition, montage and apparatus/dispositif—threatening either to dehistoricize and distract or to provide new narrative and associative possibilities via public art. These techniques also serve as helpful tools for analysis drawn from cinema studies that can be applied to examples of the moving image in public space. Historical examples include the multi-screen experiments of Charles and Ray Eames; and contemporary public projections such as Krzysztof Wodiczko’s Abraham Lincoln: War Veteran Projection, Robert Lepage’s The Image Mill, my own project entitled Workers That Live in the Mirror, …

Confrontations In The New World: Grete Weil's Happy, Sagte Der Onkel (1968), Laureen Nussbaum Jan 2015

Confrontations In The New World: Grete Weil's Happy, Sagte Der Onkel (1968), Laureen Nussbaum

World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications and Presentations

In her essay “Travel Writing and Gender,” the British scholar Susan Bassnett makes two points that are relevant in analyzing Grete Weil’s travel tales, Happy, sagte der Onkel (Happy, Said My Uncle). Bassnett remarks that “increasingly in the twentieth century, male and female travelers have written self-reflexive texts that defy easy categorization as autobiography, memoir, or travel account.” This observation certainly holds true for Grete Weil’s slim volume, and so does Bassnett’s gender-specific assertion that there is a “strand of women’s travel writing that has grown in importance in the twentieth century: the journey that leads to greater self-awareness …
