The Emotional Experience Of Language In English Spanish Bilinguals, Uribe Idaly Velez Jan 2015

The Emotional Experience Of Language In English Spanish Bilinguals, Uribe Idaly Velez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Bilinguals commonly report experiencing emotions differently depending on which language are they speaking. Emotionally loaded words were expected to be appraised differently in first versus second language in a sample of Spanish-English bilinguals (n=117). English (L2) ratings were subtracted from Spanish (L1) ratings; the resulted scores were used as dependent variable in the analyses. Three categories of words (positive, negative and taboo) were appraised in both languages (English and Spanish)and two sensory modalities (Visual and auditory). The differences in valence scores in Spanish (L1) and English (L2) were expected to be significantly higher when presented aurally than when presented visually. …

Exploring Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Voices: A Critical Case Study With Middle School Students, De Moed Simone Tuinhof

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This dissertation explores the perspectives of culturally and linguistically diverse learners and English learners on school conditions that enable them to share their heritage languages and cultures, as well as the ways that these learners propose that their heritage languages and cultures could be more recognized in an English-only middle school setting. This study focused specifically on the role that culturally and linguistically diverse learners and English learners perceived that they played in the process of their own social empowerment, a role that could be achieved through the development of their voices by becoming critically involved in creating spaces for …

Birch Roots And Bricks: Finding Home In The Pluralism Of Voice In Migration Novels Of Contemporary Europe, Dorothea Trotter Jan 2015

Birch Roots And Bricks: Finding Home In The Pluralism Of Voice In Migration Novels Of Contemporary Europe, Dorothea Trotter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Through a comparative literary study of Monica Ali’s Brick Lane and Olga Grjasnova’s Der Russe ist einer, der Birken liebt, this thesis concludes that although the migrant experience is heterogeneous and that integration is a difficult process that varies through the diversity of experiences, these experiences can be unified by the common way in which migrants learn to “belong” by connecting with voices of the past and present and by building and maintaining relationships that extend beyond the limits of place. In defending this argument, the thesis draws upon themes of Bakhtinian heteroglossia, nationalism and transnationalism, space, globalism, and migration.

A Feminist Cultural Study Of Identity, Hair Loss, And Chemotherapy, Celine Guillerm Jan 2015

A Feminist Cultural Study Of Identity, Hair Loss, And Chemotherapy, Celine Guillerm

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The main aim of this dissertation is to discuss the way women negotiate the cultural meaning of hair loss, alopecia, as a result of undergoing chemotherapy, and to understand, accordingly, how cancer's cultural effects regarding women can be deeply different from those of men. Very few studies have been done about the cultural impact and resonance of alopecia. It is often regarded as "secondary" to other effects of chemotherapy. Because, in many cultures, head hair for women expresses or manifests attractiveness and power, to be bald is to be deprived of the ability to fit into society, whether in the …

Cognitive Implications Of Biculturalism: Impact On Entrepreneurial Intentions, Ratan Dheer Jan 2015

Cognitive Implications Of Biculturalism: Impact On Entrepreneurial Intentions, Ratan Dheer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Globalization has increased the number of individuals who identify with more than one culture. Studies in cultural psychology suggest that the manner in which bicultural individuals manage their dual cultural identities has important implications for them and for their host societies. While existing studies have examined the psychological and sociocultural consequences of biculturalism, only little attention has been paid to understanding its economic consequences. Importantly, the effect that managing dual cultural identities has on bicultural individual's entrepreneurial intentions has remained unexplored. Given the fact that entrepreneurship is vital to the economic success of nations and biculturals are said to play …

An Analysis Of Personality And The Effect Of Peer Influence On Deviant Behavior During Adolescence, Kasey Taylor Jan 2015

An Analysis Of Personality And The Effect Of Peer Influence On Deviant Behavior During Adolescence, Kasey Taylor

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Criminologists have long since documented a connection between peer deviance and personal deviance. Some theories suggest that this connection is due to a learning process where individuals may adopt the attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors of those with whom they have significant interactions, such as friends. While individuals may be susceptible to learning anti-social behavior from peers, it is unclear if certain personality characteristics may affect this relationship. The purpose of this study is to determine if differences in specific personality characteristics, such as self-esteem, introversion and extroversion, can have a moderating effect on the pressures to participate in the use …

Aggression And Prosocial Behavior Predict Changes In Perceptions Of Friendship Quality In Primary And Middle School Students, Lauren Shawcross

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This study examines whether aggression and prosocial behavior shape changes in perceptions of friendship quality within stable reciprocal best friend dyads. A longitudinal Actor-Partner Interdependence Model was used to investigate whether individual characteristics predict changes 6 to 12 weeks later in perceptions of relationship support and negativity. The sample included 76 same-sex dyads drawn from classrooms in grades 4 (M = 9.48 years) through 6 (M= 11.43 years) in two public schools in the United States.

Academic Task Avoidance And Achievement As Predictors Of Peer Status During The Early Primary School Years, Ashley D. Richmond Jan 2015

Academic Task Avoidance And Achievement As Predictors Of Peer Status During The Early Primary School Years, Ashley D. Richmond

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Given the diverse and substantial developmental outcomes associated with low peer acceptance, it is important to research its potential predictors. However, the developmental antecedents are not likely restricted to simple, one-lagged links within the same domain. Rather, peer status may stem from a developmental sequence of effects across several domains, particularly across those that develop at the same time and in the same environment as peer status. A developmental cascade model is best used to capture sequential changes over time, across multiple domains, and during sensitive periods of development Academic motivation and achievement likely exemplify predictors that would affect peer …

An Empathetic Approach To Information Design, Frederick J. Mccawley Jan 2015

An Empathetic Approach To Information Design, Frederick J. Mccawley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This thesis will explore the vital importance of empathy on the part of graphic designers when creating information graphics. Today’s over-mediated public expects a rich user experience that is emotionally engaging, and multi-sensory by nature. To meet the public’s need, graphic designers must accept the cognitive responsibility to be empathetic to the viewers’ relationship to the information, and not just the surface issues of form, media, and content.

Authorial Narration Of Photographs: Postmemory In Erika Dreifus's Short Story Collection Quiet Americans, Dennis Carmen Hall

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Postmemory is an interpretive theory that describes the relationship between the children of Holocaust survivors (Second-generation witnesses) and the trauma suffered by their parents. This thesis extends postmemory in two ways: first, postmemory is extended to include refugees who escaped the Holocaust. Thus, refugee families are situated in the three familial paradigms of Holocaust memory. Second, postmemory is extended to Third-generation witnesses (grandchildren of Holocaust survivors and refugees). Manifestations and representations of postmemory in Third-generation refugee families is demonstrated by authorial narration of photographs in third-generation refugee writer Erika Dreifus's short story collection Quiet Americans.

The Essence Of English Identity: Gender's Role In The Stability Of The Nation In English Literature, From The Anglo-Saxons To The Victorians, Natalie Marie Whitaker

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

This thesis, using Jungian analysis, investigates how the Anglo-Saxon poem Beowulf, William Shakespeare's Macbeth, and Charles Dickens's David Copperfield reflect the interdependent spheres of gender relationships that affected societal perceptions of English national identity and stability for over a thousand years. Historian Geoffrey Hindley writes, "the historical reality of an English identity grew out of the traditions of loyalty and lordship from the epic heritage of a pagan past embodied in the poem of Beowulf in a common vernacular tongue.” In the three periods examined here, men and women had responsibilities in marriage that were defined by the societal ideals …

Factors Affecting Anterior Knee Pain In Post-Aclr Comparing Patellar Tendon And Hamstring Tendon Autografts, Alexandria Annalicia Jauregui-Dusseau

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are frequent athletic and non-athletic injuries that impact a person's functional and athletic capability. ACL injuries generally require surgical reconstruction. The most popular graft types include patellar tendon (PT) and hamstring tendon (HT) autografts. PT autografts have been blamed for chronic anterior knee pain (AKP) and extensor mechanism deficits. This study compared the PT and HT autografts and their impact on AKP in subjects who underwent anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). Data were gathered from existing patient data from rehabilitation therapy records. Additional factors were also analyzed to determine the effect on post-ACLR pain. Post-treatment …

Dry Needling For Myofascial Trigger Point Pain: A Clinical Commentary, Casey Unverzagt, Kathleen Berglund, J J. Thomas

Faculty Publications

Sports and orthopaedic physical therapists have long used a multitude of techniques in order to address pain and dysfunction associated with myofascial trigger points. One technique in particular has recently received overwhelming attention: trigger point dry needling (DN). Despite its efficacy and low risk, questions remain as to its effectiveness, safety, and whether the technique is within the scope of practice of physical therapists. Therefore, the purpose of this clinical commentary is to summarize the current literature related to the associated mechanisms of action of DN, the safety of DN, as well as to discuss relevant scope of practice concerns.
