Adaptive Pi Control To Realize Sinusoidal Ripple Current Charging In Battery Charger Systems, Jen-Guey Chen
Adaptive Pi Control To Realize Sinusoidal Ripple Current Charging In Battery Charger Systems, Jen-Guey Chen
Master's Theses
This thesis proposes the adaptive PI gain control to regulate sinusoidal ripple current (SRC) in battery charger systems. The SRC charge method is suited for fast and efficient charging. Y.D Lee (2015) propose that SRC charge method can reduce the charging time, decrease the charging temperature and improve the charging efficiency by applying optimal frequency to charge the battery. In order to determine optimal frequency for charging, the swept frequency is required in SRC charge method. Therefore, in order to perform SRC charge approach, the battery charger systems have to be capable of handling swept frequency input and regulating high …

Isis, Boko Haram, And The Human Right To Freedom From Slavery Under Islamic Law, Bernard K. Freamon
Isis, Boko Haram, And The Human Right To Freedom From Slavery Under Islamic Law, Bernard K. Freamon
Fordham International Law Journal
There is now a worldwide consensus on the firm existence of a human right to freedom from slavery. This consensus gives rise to what was thought to be an irrefutable argument that the right to be free from slavery is a jurisprudential universal, with no competent legal system or government able to deny its existence or permit derogation from its tenets. This argument is now being tested by the ideologies, policies, and actions of Muslim insurgencies in Iraq, Syria, and Nigeria, each claiming that the enslavement of non-believing combatants and war captives and slave trading in such persons is permitted …

Genetic Analysis Of The Henry Mountains Bison Herd, Dustin H. Ranglack, Lauren K. Dobson, Johan T. Du Toit, James Derr
Genetic Analysis Of The Henry Mountains Bison Herd, Dustin H. Ranglack, Lauren K. Dobson, Johan T. Du Toit, James Derr
Wildland Resources Faculty Publications
Wild American plains bison (Bison bison) populations virtually disappeared in the late 1800s, with some remnant animals retained in what would become Yellowstone National Park and on private ranches. Some of these private bison were intentionally crossbred with cattle for commercial purposes. This forced hybridization resulted in both mitochondrial and nuclear introgression of cattle genes into some of the extant bison genome. As the private populations grew, excess animals, along with their history of cattle genetics, provided founders for newly established public bison populations. Of the US public bison herds, only those in Yellowstone and Wind Cave National Parks (YNP …

Understanding the process of expertise development is critical for human resource development. The present study aimed to develop a quantitative instrument to assess general procedural components of employee expertise development in various work contexts. Specifically, the present study answered the following two research questions: (1) What are the general dimensions of employee expertise development? and (2) To what extent can the general dimensions of employee expertise development be confirmed across various work settings? I employed an exploratory sequential mixed methods design. Based on qualitative data from 46 employees and comprehensive literature review, three constructs were generated: Developmental Work Experience (DWE), …
Lagrangian Approach To Modeling The Biodynamics Of The Upper Extremity: Applications To Collegiate Baseball Pitching, Matthew J. Solomito
Lagrangian Approach To Modeling The Biodynamics Of The Upper Extremity: Applications To Collegiate Baseball Pitching, Matthew J. Solomito
Doctoral Dissertations
Biomechanical modeling can provide information regarding movement patterns and allow for an improved understanding of injury mechanisms. Biomechanical models typically rely on Newtonian mechanics leading to computationally intensive models; however, an often overlooked means of solving these same modeling needs is to apply the Lagrangian approach. This approach allows for a more direct means of solving the equations of motion; leading to more accurate models of human motion. The purpose of this project was to create a Lagrangian based model of the upper extremity to describe joint kinematics and kinetics as well as muscle kinetics during complex motion tasks.

Effect Of Labor Epidural Analgesia With Hydromorphone On Neonatal Neurobehavior And Breastfeeding Behavior In The First 24 Hours Of Life, Cynthia French
Effect Of Labor Epidural Analgesia With Hydromorphone On Neonatal Neurobehavior And Breastfeeding Behavior In The First 24 Hours Of Life, Cynthia French
Doctoral Dissertations
Epidural opioids and local anesthetics may depress the neonatal reflexes necessary for breastfeeding success. Literature review yielded no data for hydromorphone and conflicting results for fentanyl. This study investigated whether breastfeeding effectiveness would be less in infants whose mothers received epidural analgesia with hydromorphone compared with those whose mothers received no analgesia, and whether the total amount of drugs given or the presence of multiple stressful events or interventions would be related to the effectiveness of breastfeeding.
Breastfeeding behaviors were studied in 51 infants whose mothers chose epidural analgesia compared with 51 infants whose mothers chose to have no analgesia. …

Effectiveness Of A Dental Students Stress Management Program, Abdullah M. Alzahem, Henk T. Van Der Molen, Benjamin J. De Boerc
Health Professions Education
The dental education stress effects and sources were explored thoroughly in the literature, but the effectiveness of stress management programs received less attention. This study introduced a new stress management program, named Dental Education Stress Management (DESM) program. It showed its effectiveness in a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest-follow-up-control group design. The new program was based on the principle of psychoeducation and consisted of three 90-min sessions, to teach dental students how to better deal with their stress symptoms and to reduce their general stress level. Two instruments were used to assess the level of stress of the dental students, namely the Dental …
Trash, A Curatorial : An Ethnographic And Visual Study Of Waste In Urban Hong Kong, Anneke Coppoolse
Trash, A Curatorial : An Ethnographic And Visual Study Of Waste In Urban Hong Kong, Anneke Coppoolse
Lingnan Theses
This is an ethnography of waste in the streets of urban Hong Kong and a curatorial inquiry into the significance of its visuality. Presented in the form of a triptych, the dissertation probes and portrays fragments of urban life in Hong Kong, consequently opening up a new vista for intellectual and social engagement at the juncture of aesthetics, lived experiences, and power. While urban density provides for its equivalent in trash, much of Hong Kong’s refuse first lands in the streets. It is thereupon regulated to be rendered invisible through government organisation which corresponds with what Gay Hawkins (2007) calls …
Harry Potter And The American Response: Persecution And Popularity Of The Boy Who Lived, Ashley N. Zirkle
Harry Potter And The American Response: Persecution And Popularity Of The Boy Who Lived, Ashley N. Zirkle
Masters Theses
Some people, such as J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter, eagerly embrace the opportunities that magic promises. Others, however, fear and despise magic, and so condemn anything that contains so much as a sprinkle of pixie dust, just as Harry’s aunt and uncle do. A look into the reception of the Harry Potter series, particularly in the United States, demonstrates how these two responses to magic occur, and why this series in particular created such strong reactions from both sides. With a long history of banning literature that contains magic, it is little surprise that many religious conservatives felt the need to …

From Assessment Cocktail To Assessment Symphony: The Development Of Best Assessment Practices, Hanan M. Al-Kadri
From Assessment Cocktail To Assessment Symphony: The Development Of Best Assessment Practices, Hanan M. Al-Kadri
Health Professions Education
Introduction of the best possible assessment practices is a requirement for any institution seeking to foster excellence in its students. Assessment practices have been assumed to drive students' learning. However the extent of which this driving role of assessment negatively or positively influences attainment of curriculum objectives and educational outcomes is not well known. In an effort to improve assessment practices, assessment has moved from an era of strict implementation of assessment of learning and a dominance of the psychometric theory into a focus on assessment for learning. In the latter view, a cocktail of assessments is proposed to enhance …

Dynamics Of Density Cavities Generated By Frictional Heating: Formation, Distortion, And Instability, M. D. Zettergren, J. L. Semeter, H. Dahlgren
Publications
A simulation study of the generation and evolution of mesoscale density cavities in the polar ionosphere is conducted using a time-dependent, nonlinear, quasi-electrostatic model. The model demonstrates that density cavities, generated by frictional heating, can form in as little as 90 s due to strong electric fields of ∼120 mV/m, which are sometimes observed near auroral zone and polar cap arcs. Asymmetric density cavity features and strong plasma density gradients perpendicular to the geomagnetic field are naturally generated as a consequence of the strong convection and finite extent of the auroral feature. The walls of the auroral density cavities are …
Dialectical Behavior Therapy In College Counseling Centers: Practical Applications And Theoretical Considerations, Carla Chugani
Dialectical Behavior Therapy In College Counseling Centers: Practical Applications And Theoretical Considerations, Carla Chugani
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Authors over the last two decades have discussed the myriad of challenges present in managing college students with severe mental health disorders. During the same time period, Marsha Linehan developed dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) as an empirically sound intervention for individuals with suicidal and self-injurious behaviors and this treatment grew to be an evidence-based practice for a range of challenging clinical issues. I argue that one solution to continued increases in college students who present for treatment to their college counseling centers with difficult-to-treat mental health issues, including but not limited to, borderline personality disorder (BPD), is to implement DBT …

On The Use And Misuse Of Lectures In Higher Education, Henk G. Schmid, Stephanie L. Wagener, Guus A.C.M. Smeets, Lianne M. Keemink, Henk T. Van Der Molen
Health Professions Education
Background: The purpose of this article was to review the literature on lecture effectiveness and to suggest avenues for improvements. Methods: Selective literature review with an emphasis on active learning in the classroom setting. Results: Conventional lectures are effective only to a limited extent in attaining important curriculum objectives. They do not promote critical thinking; student attendance tends to be low and so is cognitive engagement; furthermore, the idea that lectures should and can cover all essential subject matter is false. Moreover, empirical literature on what students actually learn from lectures is lacking. A most fundamental problem of lectures is …

Research Advances In Conformity To Peer Pressure: A Negative Side Effect Of Medical Education, Tanya Beran
Research Advances In Conformity To Peer Pressure: A Negative Side Effect Of Medical Education, Tanya Beran
Health Professions Education
Curricula in medical education are intended to impart the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that students will require as physicians to meet patient needs. There are additional unarticulated and implicit messages that inherently emerge in medical education. This paper examines one such message: conformity to peers, whereby individuals repeat inaccurate information reported by peer group members. Empirical evidence from 60 years of social-psychological research demonstrates that this phenomenon of conformity occurs across experimental tasks, cultures, and over time. It has yet to be systematically studied in medical education. Emerging studies from the University of Calgary, Canada, and in collaboration with King …

Focus Of The New Journal Health Professions Education, Henk Schmidt
Health Professions Education
Why is there a need for a new journal in the field of health professions education? The simple answer is that the field is expanding. The number of academics and educators interested in understanding what works in health professions education and why, increases. Existing journals turn down up to 90% of submissions and offer little opportunity for young researchers and educators to master the craft of scientific publishing in close interaction with experienced reviewers. Health Professions Education will therefore offer more extended editorial support to young researchers than is possible for existing journals. We encourage beginning authors to start submitting …

"Ushering" In The Fulfillment Of Prophecy, Alison M. Pulliam
"Ushering" In The Fulfillment Of Prophecy, Alison M. Pulliam
Aidenn: The Liberty Undergraduate Journal of American Literature
During the 19th century, a phenomenon known as “Holy Land mania” was sweeping the United States. Americans were intrigued by the state of the Holy Land and whether or not this state matched the images described in biblical prophecy (Robey 62). Interest in Israel’s condition invaded many aspects of American life, including literature. Looking through the lens of historical criticism, it is easy to see how authors of this time period fed on the “Holy Land mania” to include references to prophecy and the Middle East in their writings. In particular, critic Molly K. Robey accurately points out in …
Evaluation Of The Crystalline Lens Gradient Refractive Index Using Laser Ray Tracing And Optical Coherence Tomography, Bianca Maceo Heilman
Evaluation Of The Crystalline Lens Gradient Refractive Index Using Laser Ray Tracing And Optical Coherence Tomography, Bianca Maceo Heilman
Open Access Dissertations
The human crystalline lens is a complex and intricate structure that continuously grows throughout our lifetime. The crystalline lens has a non-uniform distribution of protein concentrations which produces an optical gradient within the lens in both the optical and equatorial axes. This gradient refractive index is a unique property of the crystalline lens that significantly contributes to its optical power and aberrations. The objective of this dissertation is to gain a better understanding of the relationship between the crystalline lens shape, its non-uniform gradient refractive index, the lens optical power and aberrations, and their changes with accommodation and age. The …

Trm9-Catalyzed Trna Modifications Regulate Global Protein Expression By Codon-Biased Translation, Thomas J. Begley, Wenjun Deng, I. Ramesh Babu, Dan Su, Shanye Yin, Peter C. Dedon
Biological Sciences Faculty Scholarship
Post-transcriptional modifications of transfer RNAs (tRNAs) have long been recognized to play crucial roles in regulating the rate and fidelity of translation. However, the extent to which they determine global protein production remains poorly understood. Here we use quantitative proteomics to show a direct link between wobble uridine 5-methoxycarbonylmethyl (mcm5) and 5-methoxy-carbonyl-methyl-2-thio (mcm5s2) modifications catalyzed by tRNA methyltransferase 9 (Trm9) in tRNAArg(UCU) and tRNAGlu(UUC) and selective translation of proteins from genes enriched with their cognate codons. Controlling for bias in protein expression and alternations in mRNA expression, we find that loss of …

Method Of Lines Transpose: An Efficient A-Stable Solver For Wave Propagation, Matthew Causley, Andrew Christlieb, Eric Wolf
Mathematics Publications
Building upon recent results obtained in [7,8,9], we describe an efficient second order, A-stable scheme for solving the wave equation, based on the method of lines transpose (MOLT), and the resulting semi-discrete (i.e. continuous in space) boundary value problem. In [7], A-stable schemes of high order were derived, and in [9] a high order, fast O(N) spatial solver was derived, which is matrix-free and is based on dimensional-splitting. In this work, are interested in building a wave solver, and our main concern is the development of boundary conditions. We demonstrate all desired boundary conditions for a wave solver, including outflow …
