Improving In Vivo Two Photon Microscopy Without Adaptive Optics, Gerardo Estrada Jan 2015

Improving In Vivo Two Photon Microscopy Without Adaptive Optics, Gerardo Estrada

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Two photon microscopy is one of the fastest growing methods of in-vivo imaging of the brain. It has the capability of imaging structures on the scale of 1μm. At this scale the wavelength of the imaging field (usually near infra-red), is comparable to the size of the structures being imaged, which makes the use of ray optics invalid. A better understanding is needed to predict the result of introducing different media into the light path. We use Wolf's integral, which is capable of fulfilling these needs without the shortcomings of ray optics. We predict the effects of aberrating media introduced …

Inlet-Adjacent Shoreline Behavior At Three Stabilized Inlets In Palm Beach County, Fl (Usa), Edward A. Vandamas Jan 2015

Inlet-Adjacent Shoreline Behavior At Three Stabilized Inlets In Palm Beach County, Fl (Usa), Edward A. Vandamas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Shorelines are a primary source of attraction for the nearly two million tourists who visit Palm Beach County annually. Many of Palm Beach County beaches are located on barrier islands, separated by a series of inlets which serve as access points to the Intracoastal Waterway. However, inlets are often cited as a source of erosion, through interruption of littoral drift and interaction with nearshore hydrodynamics (e.g., causing wave diffraction or refraction). In an effort to mitigate potential negative impacts of the economically important tidal inlets, Palm Beach County has installed a sand transfer plant (STP) at two inlet locations, the …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) affects one out of every 68 children in the United States. The disorder is characterized by persistent deficits in social communication, social interaction, and restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, interest, or activities that together limit and impair everyday functioning. Research has shown that the use of visual resources, such as video modeling procedures, can support individuals with ASD to acquire and maintain a variety of daily living skills leading to enhanced levels of independence.

Recognizing Functional Decline In Persons With Mci (Mild Cognitive Impairment), Robin Story Powers-Jarvis Jan 2015

Recognizing Functional Decline In Persons With Mci (Mild Cognitive Impairment), Robin Story Powers-Jarvis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Although not all persons with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) go on to develop Alzheimer's disease (AD), MCI is recognized as an early stage of AD. The effects of AD are devastating to all concerned. Research has identified that recognition of AD in its earliest stages and institution of known treatment modalities can forestall the ultimate outcome. Identification of the first subtle signs of MCI can assist in the recognition of this prodromal phase, and allow for institution of therapy while still in the initial stages. Unfortunately, the development of MCI is insidious in nature, thus making it difficult to detect. …

Romantic Science: Nature As Schism Between Romantic Generations And As Catalyst Between Romanticism And Science Fiction, Gabrielle Helo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

After 1815's eruption of Mount Tambora, the following period was named the "Year without a Summer" and experienced irregularly cold weather, failed crops, rampant disease, and riots. In the summer of 1816, Lord Byron, Percy Bysshe Shelley, and Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley met in the Alps and wrote "Darkness," "Mont Blanc," and Frankenstein respectively. This thesis focuses on these works' depictions of nature in light of how these features may have been impacted by the climate. It argues in Chapter One that the volcanic eruption caused global climate changes that affected these writers. In Chapter Two, it illustrates differences in nature's …

Recovering Titanium Dioxide (Tio2) After Its Use To Treat Leachate For Reuse On Future Leachate Flows, Neil Coffman Jan 2015

Recovering Titanium Dioxide (Tio2) After Its Use To Treat Leachate For Reuse On Future Leachate Flows, Neil Coffman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This thesis was about finding a recovery method for TiO2, using a TiO2 recovery technology, which was high enough to be economical ($10 - $15 per 1,000 gallons) to be adopted by wastewater treatment plants. When comparing recovery technologies, the top three which were investigated further through experimentation were a centrifuge, sedimentation tank, and microfilter membrane. Upon experimentation and research, the TiO2 recovery efficiencies of these technologies were 99.5%, 92.5%, and 96.3%, respectively. When doing economic analysis on these technologies comparing TiO2 efficiencies and capital and operational costs, the centrifuge was the most preferred economic option. Also, its cost did …

Seminoles And Settlers On The Florida Frontier: Using Glass Bottle Analysis To Reconstruct Daily Life At Stranahan’S Trading Post, Fort Lauderdale, Crystal Geiger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The early economic and social development of Fort Lauderdale began in the late nineteenth century. Today’s well-known Stranahan House in downtown Fort Lauderdale was originally the Stranahan Trading Post and General Store, which was in operation from 1894 to 1906. Adjacent to this building was a campground, which was used by early Florida white settlers and Seminole Indians. This thesis presents a study of 204 whole glass bottles recovered from the Stranahan campground archaeological site (8BD259). The analysis confirms that a greater proportion of the bottles were used when the property was a campsite. Moreover, soda/mineral water, not alcohol, was …

A theoretical framework for analyzing school choice programs was put forth in this dissertation through an analysis of the over-arching dynamical elements that have shaped the administrative and political arguments for and against these programs. A comprehensive review of the literature on school choice comprised a substantial part of …

Spin-Foam Dynamics Of General Relativity, Shirazi Atousa Chaharsough Jan 2015

Spin-Foam Dynamics Of General Relativity, Shirazi Atousa Chaharsough

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

In this dissertation the dynamics of general relativity is studied via the spin-foam approach to quantum gravity. Spin-foams are a proposal to compute a transition amplitude from a triangulated space-time manifold for the evolution of quantum 3d geometry via path integral. Any path integral formulation of a quantum theory has two important parts, the measure factor and a phase part. The correct measure factor is obtained by careful canonical analysis at the continuum level. The basic variables in the Plebanski-Holst formulation of gravity from which spin-foam is derived are a Lorentz connection and a Lorentz-algebra valued two-form, called the Plebanski …

Selective Activation Of The Sk1 Subtype Of Small Conductance Ca2+ Activated K+ Channels By Gw542573x In C57bl6j Mice Impairs Hippocampal-Dependent Memory, Kuchera Claire A Rice Jan 2015

Selective Activation Of The Sk1 Subtype Of Small Conductance Ca2+ Activated K+ Channels By Gw542573x In C57bl6j Mice Impairs Hippocampal-Dependent Memory, Kuchera Claire A Rice

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

SK channels are small conductance Ca2+-activated K+ channels expressed throughout the CNS. SK channels modulate the excitability of hippocampal CA1 neurons by affecting afterhyperpolarization and shaping excitatory postsynaptic responses. Such SK-mediated effects on activity-dependent neuronal excitability and synaptic strength are thought to underlie the modulatory influence of SK channels on memory encoding. Here, the effect of a new SK1 selective activator, GW542573X, on hippocampal-dependent object memory, contextual and cued conditioning, and trace fear conditioning was examined. The results demonstrated that pre- but not post-training systemic administration of GW542573X impaired object memory and trace fear memory in mice 24 h after training. …

The Just War Tradition And International Law Against War: The Myth Of Discordant Doctrines, Mary Ellen O'Connell Jan 2015

The Just War Tradition And International Law Against War: The Myth Of Discordant Doctrines, Mary Ellen O'Connell

Journal Articles

The international law regulating resort to armed force, still known by the Latin phrase, the jus ad bellum, forms a principal substantive subfield of international law, along with human rights law, international environmental law, and international economic law. Among theologians, philosophers, and political scientists, just war theory is a major topic of study. Nevertheless, only a minority of scholars and practitioners know both jus ad bellum and just war theory well. Lack of knowledge has led to the erroneous view that the two areas are in conflict. This article responds to this misapprehension, explaining the deep compatibility of international law …

Azimuthal Asymmetries And The Emergence Of “Collectivity” From Multi-Particle Correlations In High-Energy Pa Collisions, Adrian Dumitru, Larry Mclerran, Vladimir Skokov Jan 2015

Azimuthal Asymmetries And The Emergence Of “Collectivity” From Multi-Particle Correlations In High-Energy Pa Collisions, Adrian Dumitru, Larry Mclerran, Vladimir Skokov

Publications and Research

We show how angular asymmetries ∼ cos 2φ can arise in dipole scattering at high energies. We illustrate the effects due to anisotropic fluctuations of the saturation momentum of the target with a finite correlation length in the transverse impact parameter plane, i.e. from a domain-like structure. We compute the two-particle azimuthal cumulant in this model including both one-particle factorizable as well as genuine two-particle non-factorizable contributions to the two-particle cross section. We also compute the full BBGKY hierarchy for the four-particle azimuthal cumulant and find that only the fully factorizable contribution to c2{4} is negative while …

Homelessness At The Cathedral, Marc L. Roark Jan 2015

Homelessness At The Cathedral, Marc L. Roark

Missouri Law Review

This Article argues that legal restraints against homeless persons are resolved by applying certain nuisance-like approaches. By drawing on nuisance restraints that adopt property-based and social-identity information, courts and decision-makers choose approaches that create conflict between homeless identities and adopted social identities. These approaches tend to relegate the social choice of whether to tolerate homeless persons to one of established social order (property) or broadly conceived notions of liberty (constitutional rights or due process rights). This Article argues for a broader conception of social identity, which may force parties to internalize certain costs of action, tolerate certain uses, or abate …

There Must Be A Better Way: The Unintended Consequences Of Missouri’S Hancock Amendment. Zweig V. Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District, Kimberly Hubbard

Missouri Law Review

The Hancock Amendment to the Missouri Constitution became law in November 1980 after fifty-five percent of voters approved it. The amendment is a type of provision known as a “tax and expenditure limitation.” The purpose of these provisions was “to restrict the growth of the state budget.” Most people thought it meant that they would not have to pay higher taxes, and they were right to an extent. What voters and Mel Hancock, the amendment’s namesake, did not contemplate were the numerous ill-effects of this constitutional amendment.

Safety Culture Monitoring: A Management Approach For Assessing Nuclear Safety Culture Health Performance Utilizing Multiple-Criteria Decision Analysis, James Harold Warren Jr.

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Nuclear power plants are among the most technologically complex of all energy facilities. This complexity reflects the precision needed in design, maintenance and operations to harness the energy of the atom safely, reliably and economically. Nuclear energy thus requires consistent, high levels of organizational performance by the highly skilled professionals who operate and maintain nuclear power plants (Nuclear Energy Institute [NEI], 2014, p. 1).

A key element for achieving consistent, high levels of performance in a nuclear organization is its safety culture. Nuclear safety culture is for an organization what character and personality is for an individual: a feature that …
