Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Associated With A Palmaris Profundus Tendon: A Case Report, Andrea B. Lese, Kristin M. Loker, Moheb S. Moneim
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Associated With A Palmaris Profundus Tendon: A Case Report, Andrea B. Lese, Kristin M. Loker, Moheb S. Moneim
UNM Orthopaedic Research Journal
Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is often found in adults and may be associated with rare anatomical abnormalities in the hand, such as the presence of a palmaris profundus tendon. Although the muscle was originally thought to be a variant of the palmaris longus muscle, some case studies have described both structures during operative treatment with open carpal tunnel release. We present a case of a 51-year-old woman who underwent open carpal tunnel release to treat CTS of the right hand. Preoperatively, results of electrodiagnostic tests and clinical examinations, respectively, were normal and equivocal. Intraoperatively, a palmaris profundus tendon was found …

Surgical Treatment Of Chronic Dislocation Of A Posterior Tibial Tendon In A Collegiate Athlete: A Case Report, Tony G. Pedri, Richard A. Miller
UNM Orthopaedic Research Journal
Traumatic dislocation of the posterior tibial tendon (PTT) is a rare and often misdiagnosed injury. The limited number of cases, ambiguous results of initial imaging studies, and presence of symptoms similar to medial ankle sprains can contribute to unsuccessful long-term treatment. Current studies, although limited, report high rates of failure in nonoperative compared with operative treatment. We describe a 21-year-old male baseball player who experienced pain and mild swelling in his ankle after falling while running at full speed. After 5 months of continuous pain in the medial ankle, the patient was referred to our clinic and underwent suture anchor …

Custom-Made Angled Polyethylene Insert Exchange For Treatment Of Valgus Malalignment In Revision Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Case Report, Reilly J. Kuehn, Ch Christopher R Hanosh
UNM Orthopaedic Research Journal
Single- and dual-component revisions have typically been used to correct coronal malalignment after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). However, realignment of well-fixed components can result in complications such as bone loss and the need for increasing constraint of implants. Exchange to a custom-made angled polyethylene insert, although primarily implemented in cases of osteolysis, has been described with low complication rates and minimal loss of motion. We describe a 74-year-old woman who underwent TKA in January 2006 and presented to our clinic in March 2013 with symptoms of pain and instability of the right knee. We performed a revision TKA using two …

Scaphoid Stress Fracture In A 65-Year-Old Man With Low Bone Mineral Density: A Case Report, Dean W. Smith
UNM Orthopaedic Research Journal
Although commonly reported in women and less commonly in younger athletes, no studies have reported stress fractures of the scaphoid in older, sedentary men. Because of its rarity, osteoporosis in older men is often unrecognized and only diagnosed after the fracture. I describe a previously sedentary 65-year-old man who presented to my clinic with pain in the right wrist after his first day of intense physical activity and underwent 8 weeks of splinting and bracing for treatment of a fracture of the waist of the scaphoid. Ten weeks after the pain began, a computed tomography image revealed healing of the …

American Indian Children And U.S. Policy, Angelique Eaglewoman (Wambdi A. Wastewin), Sisseton-Wahpeton Dakota Oyate Of The Lake Traverse Reservation, G. William Rice, United Keetoowah Band Of Cherokee Indians In Oklahoma
Tribal Law Journal
This article presents the major impact of implemented U.S. Indian policies on the lives of American Indian children. First, the article discusses U.S. policies aimed to re-socializing American Indians through imposition of external language, culture, and beliefs through a system of government-mandated education. In the late 1700s through the 1800s, the U.S. government set a course for military control over American Indian peoples. Re-socialization as an assimilation policy forced profound lifestyle and culture changes. These policies were aimed directly at American Indian children through mandatory Indian residential boarding schools. After decades of resistance, many tribal communities achieved educational reform. Assimilation …

Thermo-Catalytic Methane Decomposition: A Review Of State Of The Art Of Catalysts, Ahmed A. Ibrahim, Ahmed S. Al-Fatesh, Wasim Ullah Khan, Moustafa A. Soliman, Raja L. Al-Otaibi, Anis H. Fakeeha
Chemical Engineering
The catalytic methane decomposition to produce carbon oxides–free hydrogen and carbon nanomaterial is a promising method feasible for larger production at a moderate cheap price. The produced hydrogen is refined and can be employed straight in fuel cell and in petrochemical industries to produce ammonia and methanol. Auto-thermal reforming of natural gas, partial oxidation, steam reforming are the conventional techniques for hydrogen production in industry, though these processes incur excessive costs for the purification of hydrogen from producing carbon oxides. Current research work on thermo-catalytic methane decomposition has concentrated on promoting the catalytic activity and stability for simultaneous production of …

Chemical Engineering
Natural gas resources, stimulate the method of catalytic methane decomposition. Hydrogen is a superb energy carrier and integral component of the present energy systems, while carbon nanotubes exhibit remarkable chemical and physical properties. The reaction was run at 700 °C in a fixed bed reactor. Catalyst calcination and reduction were done at 500 °C. MgO, TiO2 and Al2O3 supported catalysts were prepared using a co-precipitation method. Catalysts of different iron loadings were characterized with BET, TGA, XRD, H2-TPR and TEM. The catalyst characterization revealed the formation of multi-walled nanotubes. Alternatively, time on stream tests of supported catalyst at 700 °C …
Protecting River Flows For Fun And Profit: Colorado's Unique Water Rights For Whitewater Parks, Reed D. Benson
Protecting River Flows For Fun And Profit: Colorado's Unique Water Rights For Whitewater Parks, Reed D. Benson
Faculty Scholarship
Since 2001, Colorado has recognized a special type of water right for whitewater parks, which are constructed within a river channel to provide play features for kayakers and other boaters. These water rights, called "recreational in-channel diversions, " are unique to Colorado, even though whitewater parks exist in several western states. This Article addresses some of the underlying reasons that recreational in-channel diversions were established in Colorado, and traces the controversy surrounding their recognition by that state's courts and legislature. Over the last decade, however, the controversy has largely died away, and whitewater park rights have now become an accepted …

Management Of Radioactive Spills In Nuclear Medicine; Teaching And Assessing With Objectively Structured Assessment Of Technical Skills, Riffat Parveen Hussain
Department of Radiology
Routine work in nuclear medicine requires the careful elution of radioactivity and its subsequent, storage and handling. Though all effort is maintained to prevent any "spill" of this radioactivity, accidents are bound to happen. The response to this spill is a methodically worked out a plan that is written and adopted as a "standard operating procedure." This protocol is taught to all involved in the area of working as a mock drill/apprenticeship model. No formal evaluation of learning is in place except for the mock drills. The objectively structured assessment of technical skills (OSATS) is a variation on the Objective …

Out In Front: State And Federal Regulation Of Air Pollution Emissions From Oil And Gas Production Activities In The Western United States, Jana B. Milford
Natural Resources Journal
As oil and gas development increases in western states, states are responding at different speeds to protect human health and the environment. Colorado and Wyoming are recognized as having taken relatively early action to regulate air pollution emissions from oil and gas development, with Wyoming adopting its first sector-specific requirements in 1999. In contrast, New Mexico and Utah have been relatively slow to act. Furthermore, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency did not adopt emissions standards for most oil and gas production activities until 2012, when it relied on Colorado and Wyoming as proving grounds for control technology. The regulatory history …
Landscape Shifting Paradigm For The Endangered Species Act: An Integrated Critical Habitat Recovery Program, Sam Kalen
Natural Resources Journal
This article explores how the designation of critical habitat under the Endangered Species Act provides an opportunity for landscape-level planning to conserve species. The Act’s requirement to designate critical habitat has generated considerable controversy. Some question its utility, including even those who aggressively pursue species conservation. Other industry and local communities challenge the economic analyses accompanying designations. For many years, designating critical habitat only occurred after litigation, well after the Act suggests designation. The general malaise surrounding the program, therefore, is well documented. Yet policy-makers and scholars shy away from crafting innovative proposals for resolving the principal issues hovering around …
An Econometric Test Of Water Market Structure In The Western United States, Kristiana Hansen, Richard Howitt, Jeffery Williams
An Econometric Test Of Water Market Structure In The Western United States, Kristiana Hansen, Richard Howitt, Jeffery Williams
Natural Resources Journal
Water markets form differently across the western United States, depending on the relative importance of water supply uncertainty and impediments to water transfers. In many locations, trades take the form of short-term leases of water, allowing the underlying property rights to remain unaffected. In other regions, water right transfers predominate. We quantify the relative effects of economic, hydrologic, and state-level institutional variables on a water agency’s decision whether to lease or purchase water rights. Econometric analysis of 3,806 transactions reported in the Water Strategist over 1990 supports the conclusion that market structure varies across states in accordance with local hydrologic …

Agriculture, Labor Intensive Growth, And Structural Change: East Asia, Southeast Asia, And Africa, Richard Grabowski
Agriculture, Labor Intensive Growth, And Structural Change: East Asia, Southeast Asia, And Africa, Richard Grabowski
Development Journal of the South
In this paper, it is argued that physically abundant labor is not necessarily cheap labor. The latter depends upon the cost of food staples. Given the non tradability of the latter, rapid growth without rapid agricultural productivity growth will make labor increasingly costly. This will make the transition to labor intensive manufacturing and the exportation of such products very difficult. More importantly, it results in a structural change process in which the economy skips manufacturing and instead shifts in to capital intensive services. The experiences of Taiwan, Indonesia, and Uganda are used to illustrate these ideas.
