Occurrence Of Upper Respiratory Tract Disease And Associated Hematology Of Gopher Tortoises (Gopherus Polyphemus) In South Florida, Kayla Villanueva

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Upper Respiratory Tract Disease (URTD) is an extremely infectious illness whose effect on Gopher tortoise populations is not fully understood and in need of more extensive research. The occurrence of URTD in the Gopher tortoise population in the Abacoa Greenway has been thoroughly documented over the past 11 years. In the current study, blood samples were collected from 37 individuals in this location, 22 of which were from previously tested individuals. Twenty-four of these individuals were also sampled for blood chemistry testing. The test results for the 22 previously tested tortoises were compared to past results. Results of this study …

Discurso Femenino De Resistencia En La Narrativa Cubana Antiesclavista: El Personaje Teresa En Sab (1841) De Gertrudis Gómez De Avellaneda, Alejandra Uribe Jan 2015

Discurso Femenino De Resistencia En La Narrativa Cubana Antiesclavista: El Personaje Teresa En Sab (1841) De Gertrudis Gómez De Avellaneda, Alejandra Uribe

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

This research study on the antislavery novel, Sab (1841), by Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda, explores issues of race, gender and social status in Cuban society during the 19th century. Avellaneda’s narrative establishes a difference between ethnic, gender and economic privileges portrayed through the most influential characters in the novel: the slave, Sab; the daughter of the landowner, Carlota; orphaned daughter of Carlota’s uncle, Teresa; and Enrique, a British landowner and Carlota’s fiancé. This study pays particular attention to Teresa’s resistance to the patriarchal values in a colonial society ruled by Spain. I consider this character crucial to understand the antislavery …

Economic Solutions To Ending Homelessness: Employment As A Long Term Solution, Benjamin Aryan Arsali Jan 2015

Economic Solutions To Ending Homelessness: Employment As A Long Term Solution, Benjamin Aryan Arsali

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Homelessness is a systemic issue in the United States, which significantly impacts both the individuals who are homeless and society as a whole. One of the major factors that drives homelessness is the loss of employment or the failure to maintain steady employment. Homeless individuals also have difficulty regaining steady employment or entering the workforce as their opportunities are often limited by their criminal records, limited employment history, and lack of a permanent address. This creates a vicious cycle keeping homeless individuals homeless. This paper argues that it is in the best interest of local governments and communities to end …

Angels And Demons: The Effect Of Dr. John Dee's Research On Christopher Marlowe's Doctor Faustus, Taylor N. Clark Jan 2015

Angels And Demons: The Effect Of Dr. John Dee's Research On Christopher Marlowe's Doctor Faustus, Taylor N. Clark

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Dr. John Dee, 16th century advisor to Queen Elizabeth, conducted a series of mystical sessions to converse with angelic spirits in the early 1580s, asking a variety of questions ranging from hidden treasures to the organization of the cosmos. At a glance the experiments appear focused solely on the field of magic, separated from organized scientific research or religious belief. I argue that Dee’s research within this period does not separate the three from one another, but instead serves as a meeting point where magic, science, and religion overlap one another. They are not separate discourses, but instead constantly mingling …

Based upon an analysis of this literature and survey data collected by the center, I offer specific suggestions for future …

Morphometric Assessment Of Connectivity Of The Shallow-Water And Mesophotic Scleractinian Coral Montastraea Cavernosa, Samantha Faye Johnston Jan 2015

Morphometric Assessment Of Connectivity Of The Shallow-Water And Mesophotic Scleractinian Coral Montastraea Cavernosa, Samantha Faye Johnston

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Montastraea cavernosa is a widely distributed scleractinian coral found in temperate and tropical waters globally. Because it occurs in both shallow and mesophotic reefs, it is often referred to as a depth generalist. This study examined the morphometics of shallow-water and mesophotic cohorts in various locations in the Gulf of Mexico and used measurements of skeletal characteristics to assess morphological variation. Results from multivariate analyses showed that these characteristics differed significantly by site, not by depth, though there existed a significant site-depth interaction. Additionally, sites evaluated using a pairwise comparison showed that there were significant morphological variations as well, however …

Are Privileged Individuals More Likely To Make Unethical Decisions?, Lauren Koff Jan 2015

Are Privileged Individuals More Likely To Make Unethical Decisions?, Lauren Koff

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Growing inequality over the past few decades has been a great problem for the majority of Americans. Inequality is in part a reflection of privilege. The objective of this research was to investigate the association between privilege (including socioeconomic status or SES) and honesty (cheating behavior), along with relationships between privilege and personality and finally personality and honesty. This work furthered our knowledge of perceptions of social justice and the mechanisms underlying unethical behavior. Participants completed a questionnaire on Amazon MTurk that measured constructs of privilege (subjective SES, race, education, occupation, gender) and unethical behavior (participants completed three skill and …

The Effects Of Globalization On Early Childhood Education In China, Kaitlyn Mccoy Jan 2015

The Effects Of Globalization On Early Childhood Education In China, Kaitlyn Mccoy

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

In this study I provide an examination of the varying effects of globalization that have impacted early childhood education programs, teaching methods, and other aspects of the pre-primary learning system in regions dominated by two of China’s ethnic minorities: Uyghur and Tibetan, compared to the impacts on Han area preschools. I look at non-Chinese early childhood education methods such as Developmentally Appropriate Practices (DAP), Montessori teaching, and bilingualism, and evaluate their prevalence in the different regions. To investigate this topic I use both historical sources and online data from preschools in China.

Cortical Development In An Intellectual Disability (Id) Mouse Model, Kaitlyn Shotwell Jan 2015

Cortical Development In An Intellectual Disability (Id) Mouse Model, Kaitlyn Shotwell

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Intellectual disability (ID) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by significant limitations in both adaptive behavior and intellectual function that arises prior to reaching adulthood. Studies revealed a prevailing correlation between patients with ID and a sporadic SYNGAP-1 gene mutation. The SYNGAP-1 gene encodes for the protein SYNGAP that controls intracellular signaling and is directly linked with synaptic transmission. Mouse models were used to analyze the structure of somatosensory cortical neurons in different layers of the cortex during brain development. Neurons of SynGAP-1 mutant mice in layer V of the somatosensory cortex displayed a much more complex structure than the wildtype …

The Anthropology Of Airlines: Flag Carriers, Nationalism, Place, And Identity, Evan Jackson Jan 2015

The Anthropology Of Airlines: Flag Carriers, Nationalism, Place, And Identity, Evan Jackson

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

In this study, I aim to explain the status of airline flag carriers as national and cultural symbols of their respected countries. With national interests and identity as part of their development, flag-carriers serve as “aerial ambassadors” representing their home nations. Through the media of design, uniforms, crew service, and advertising techniques, flag-carriers create a sense of place of their unique nations for both local and international passengers—promoting the “imagined communities” as coined by Benedict Anderson. Behind these flag-carriers are instances of public support and pride. The role of being an aerial ambassador emerges as the airline and nation become …

Exercise Breaks, Unm Prevention Research Center

Exercise Breaks

Exercise Breaks are designed to be short in duration, and require a small space and little-to-no equipment. Exercise Breaks are a great way to transition children from one activity to the next and help them to be more focused throughout the day. Exercise Breaks can be performed in the classroom, outside, or in a large room such as a gymnasium or meeting room. Exercise Breaks can be conducted with center staff and parents during meetings.

Game Time, Unm Prevention Research Center Jan 2015

Game Time, Unm Prevention Research Center

Game Time

Game Time lessons are comprised of 4 parts: Warm-Up, Activity 1, Activity 2, and Cool Down. Game time lessons require teachers to lead games that have rules children must follow. Most Game Time activities require more space than an average classroom provides, so teachers are encouraged to teach Game Time lessons outside or in a large room such as a gymnasium or meeting room.

Euclid Squares On Infinite Planes, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy, K. Ilanthenral Jan 2015

Euclid Squares On Infinite Planes, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy, K. Ilanthenral

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this book for the first time the authors study the new type of Euclid squares in various planes like real plane, complex plane, dual number plane, special dual like number plane and special quasi dual number plane. There are six such planes and they behave distinctly. From the study it is revealed that each type of squares behave in a different way depending on the plane. We define several types of algebraic structures on them. Such study is new, innovative and interesting. However for some types of squares; one is not in a position to define product. Further under …

Techno-Art Of Selariu Supermathematics Functions, 2nd Volume, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

An ALBUM, according to the dictionary, is defined as "notebook for storing photos, postcards, stamps, lyrics, quotes etc.", which, in other words, means gatherings of "pieces" of the same "species". Or, in the new Techno-Art of Selariu SuperMathematics Functions ALBUM (the second book of Selariu SuperMathematics Functions), one contemplates a unique COMPOSITION, INTER-, INTRA- and TRANS-DISCIPLINARY. (Capitalizing here is not a futility, but a harmony with the TRUTH.) One caveat I am indebted to do, as a consequent "reader" – over time, I received the ALBUM, chapter by chapter, pace by pace, which gave me the time to analyze / …

A New Type Of Group Action Through The Applications Of Fuzzy Sets And Neutrosophic Sets, Florentin Smarandache, Mumtaz Ali Jan 2015

A New Type Of Group Action Through The Applications Of Fuzzy Sets And Neutrosophic Sets, Florentin Smarandache, Mumtaz Ali

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Fuzzy sets are the most significant tools to handle uncertain data while neutrosophic sets are the generalizations of fuzzy sets in the sense to handle uncertain, incomplete, inconsistent, indeterminate, false data. In this paper, we introduced fuzzy subspaces and neutrosophic subspaces (generalization of fuzzy subspaces) by applying group actions.Further, we define fuzzy transitivity and neutrosophic transitivty in this paper. Fuzzy orbits and neutrosophic orbits are introduced as well. We also studied some basic properties of fuzzy subspaces as well as neutrosophic subspaces.

A Comparison Of Combined Overlap Block Fuzzy Cognitive Maps (Cobfcm) And Combined Overlap Block Neutrosophic Cognitive Map (Cobncm) In Finding The Hidden Patterns And Indeterminacies In Psychological Causal Models: Case Study Of Adhd, Hojjatollah Farahani, Florentin Smarandache, Lihshing Leigh Wang Jan 2015

A Comparison Of Combined Overlap Block Fuzzy Cognitive Maps (Cobfcm) And Combined Overlap Block Neutrosophic Cognitive Map (Cobncm) In Finding The Hidden Patterns And Indeterminacies In Psychological Causal Models: Case Study Of Adhd, Hojjatollah Farahani, Florentin Smarandache, Lihshing Leigh Wang

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In spite of researchers’ concerns to find causalities, reviewing the literature of psychological studies one may argue that the classical statistical methods applied in order to find causalities are unable to find uncertainty and indeterminacies of the relationships between concepts.

In this paper, we introduce two methods to find effective solutions by identifying “hidden” patterns in the patients’ cognitive maps. Combined Overlap Block Fuzzy Cognitive Map (COBFCM) and Combined Overlap Block Neutrosophic Map (COBNCM) are effective when the number of concepts can be grouped and are large in numbers. In the first section, we introduce COBFCM, COBNCM, their applications, and …

N-Valued Interval Neutrosophic Sets And Their Application In Medical Diagnosis, Said Broumi, Irfan Deli, Florentin Smarandache Jan 2015

N-Valued Interval Neutrosophic Sets And Their Application In Medical Diagnosis, Said Broumi, Irfan Deli, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this paper a new concept is called n-valued interval neutrosophic sets is given. The basic operations are introduced on n-valued interval neutrosophic sets such as; union, intersection, addition, multiplication, scalar multiplication, scalar division, truthfavorite and false-favorite. Then, some distances between n-valued interval neutrosophic sets (NVINS) are proposed. Also, we propose an efficient approach for group multi-criteria decision making based on n-valued interval neutrosophic sets. An application of n-valued interval neutrosophic sets in medical diagnosis problem is given.

(T, I, F)-Neutrosophic Structures, Florentin Smarandache Jan 2015

(T, I, F)-Neutrosophic Structures, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this paper we introduce for the first time a new type of structures, called (T, I, F)-Neutrosophic Structures, presented from a neutrosophic logic perspective, and we show particular cases of such structures in geometry and in algebra. In any field of knowledge, each structure is composed from two parts: a space, and a set of axioms (or laws) acting (governing) on it. If the space, or at least one of its axioms (laws), has some indeterminacy, that structure is a (T, I, F)-Neutrosophic Structure.

Neutrosophic Axiomatic System, Florentin Smarandache Jan 2015

Neutrosophic Axiomatic System, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this paper, we introduce for the first time the notions of Neutrosophic Axiom, Neutrosophic Axiomatic System, Neutrosophic Deducibility and Neutrosophic Inference, Neutrosophic Proof, Neutrosophic Tautologies, Neutrosophic Quantifiers, Neutrosophic Propositional Logic, Neutrosophic Axiomatic Space, Degree of Contradiction (Dissimilarity) of Two Neutrosophic Axioms, and Neutrosophic Model. A class of neutrosophic implications is also introduced. A comparison between these innovatory neutrosophic notions and their corresponding classical notions is made. Then, three concrete examples of neutrosophic axiomatic systems, describing the same neutrosophic geometrical model, are presented at the end of the paper.
