Prescription For Critical Thinking: A Discussion Of Psychotropic Medication And Counseling, Barton W. Biggs Dec 2015

Prescription For Critical Thinking: A Discussion Of Psychotropic Medication And Counseling, Barton W. Biggs

Educational Specialist, 2009-2019

This paper examines questions about the safety and efficacy of psychotropic medication, and looks at how these questions should impact the field of counseling. The paper first looks at increasing rates of use of psychotropic medication, and establishes that nearly every clinical mental health counselor will work with clients who are taking or considering taking such medication. The paper next examines the scientific literature and establishes that there is a legitimate basis for questions to be raised about the safety and efficacy of these medications. The paper goes on to establish that there is a foundation in ethical codes and …

Finding The Resilient Teacher Within: A Workshop To Address K-12 Teacher Well-Being, Laura Jones Dec 2015

Finding The Resilient Teacher Within: A Workshop To Address K-12 Teacher Well-Being, Laura Jones

Educational Specialist, 2009-2019

Teacher stress comes from a variety of sources: accountability pressures, lack of time to relax, students who are not motivated, excessive duties and responsibilities that go beyond the classroom, testing pressure, large class size, lack of administrative support, and general concern for the safety and well being of their students (Richards, 2012). As a result of the constant high stress, more teachers are reporting mental/physical health issues and leaving the profession (Richards, 2012). One way to help deal with the stress teachers are feeling is to strengthen the teacher from within by using the resources they have already. This paper …

Addressing The Mental Health Needs Of Women In Rural Communities: A Women’S Wellness Group, Andriana Hench

Educational Specialist, 2009-2019

This paper explores the mental health needs of women in rural communities. Based on Myers and Sweeny’s Wellness Model (2008), as well as other relevant research, I have developed a group curriculum as a unique intervention to reach this specific population. This paper provides an overview of relevant literature and includes both a handbook for group facilitators and a participant workbook that compliments the facilitator handbook. This group curriculum is suggested for Clinical Mental Health Counselors and other mental health professionals to promote wellness among rural women.

Methods For Coating Quartz Crystals, William Patrick Dec 2015

Methods For Coating Quartz Crystals, William Patrick

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

The goal of this project was to evaluate the effectiveness a procedure that can be used to coat quartz crystal microbalance crystals with titanium dioxide. A successful suspension was created by suspending titanium dioxide powder in poly(acrlic) acid and mixed in an ultra-sonication bath. By utilizing a spin-coater, the TiO2 suspension was successfully dispensed onto a QCM crystal and verified using a surface profiler and microscope. However, after QCM testing, there was no evidence that supports the TiO2 precursor aiding in photocatalytic reactions.

The Evolutionary Selective Pressures Exerted On A3 Actinobacteriophages, Cheyenne Weeks-Galindo Dec 2015

The Evolutionary Selective Pressures Exerted On A3 Actinobacteriophages, Cheyenne Weeks-Galindo

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

This study identified evolutionary selective pressures within subcluster A3 actinobacteriophages. These phages are able to infect the clinically important genus Mycobacterium. Understanding the selective pressures on genes in these phage genomes is a step toward understanding the adaptations that result from short-term and long-term associations of phages and bacteria that have been co-evolving for perhaps billions of years. In this study 149 phamilies (phage protein families) of homologous gene sequences were analyzed using Datamonkey. Complete data were obtained for 57 phamilies. Of these, eleven phamilies were affected by recombination, three showed evidence of predominantly diversifying selection, and twenty-four have …

The Technological Embodiment Of Colonialism In Puerto Rico, Manuel G. Aviles-Santiago Dec 2015

The Technological Embodiment Of Colonialism In Puerto Rico, Manuel G. Aviles-Santiago

Anthurium: A Caribbean Studies Journal

This essay explores three historical events that took place during the nineteenth, twentieth and twenty-first centuries in Puerto Rico to extract the ways in which new technologies became the vehicle for massive political and economic disruptions. The first event recalls the electrification of Old San Juan and the change from kerosene gas to electricity, which prompted a grassroots revolt in which the quarter’s street-lamps were torn down. The second was less a mass revolt than a symbolically resonant moment in the encounter between the Puerto Rican independence movement and the Puerto Rican establishment when militants from a pro-independence faction, allegedly …

George Lamming’S "The Boy And The Sea" : A Littoral Artist’S Experimentation With Language And A Postcolonial Examination Of The Self, Karima K. Jeffrey

Anthurium: A Caribbean Studies Journal

For a 1989 interview, posted on Banyan’s website and captured in the videotape Footprints (1992), George Lamming is photographed on the shores of his homeland. Lamming stands on the East Coast of Barbados as a littoral figure. In the first image, he smiles at the camera as he looks inland. The horizon is seen over his shoulders, along with a wave cresting against the large rock in the middle-right panel of the photograph. In the second photograph, he faces the horizon. In this latter image, pointing at the horizon, he directs his attention and that of his interviewer to the …

Buddhist Phenomenology And The Problem Of Essence, Jingjing Li Dec 2015

Buddhist Phenomenology And The Problem Of Essence, Jingjing Li

Comparative Philosophy

In this paper, I intend to make a case for Buddhist phenomenology. By Buddhist phenomenology, I mean a phenomenological interpretation of Yogācāra’s doctrine of consciousness. Yet, this interpretation will be vulnerable if I do not justify the way in which the anti-essentialistic Buddhist philosophy can countenance the Husserlian essence. I dub this problem of compatibility between Buddhist and phenomenology the ‘problem of essence’. Nevertheless, I argue that this problem will not jeopardize Buddhist phenomenology because: 1) Yogācārins, especially late Yogācārins represented by Xuanzang do not articulate emptiness as a negation but as an affirmation of the existent; 2) Husserl’s phenomenological …

Sunyata In The West, David Grandy Dec 2015

Sunyata In The West, David Grandy

Comparative Philosophy

I argue that sunyata, or something like it, manifested itself in early Western thought. While Plato and Aristotle resisted emptiness or nothingness, they nevertheless felt themselves obliged to venture close to its edge in order to ground their explanations of changing reality to unchanging principles. These principles (Plato’s receptacle and Aristotle’s prime matter) embody much of the indeterminancy long associated with the Mahayana understanding of sunyata. Although their function was to enable lasting (static) explanations of reality by putting change out of play, they themselves shade off toward a featureless being evocative of non-being. Moving along a somewhat …

The Social Nature Of Individual Self-Identity: Akan And Narrative Conceptions Of Personhood, Corey L. Barnes Dec 2015

The Social Nature Of Individual Self-Identity: Akan And Narrative Conceptions Of Personhood, Corey L. Barnes

Comparative Philosophy

Marya Schechtman has given us reasons to think that there are different questions that compose personal identity. On the one hand, there is the question of reidentification, which concerns what makes a person the same person through different time-slices. On the other hand, there is the question of characterization, which concerns the actions, experiences, beliefs, values, desires, character traits, etc. that we take to be attributable to a person over time. While leaving the former question for another work, Schechtman answers the latter question by proposing what she terms the narrative self-constitution view, whereby Schechtman claims that we account for …

An Online Approach To Interprofessional Education, E. Adel Herge, Otd, Otr/L, Faota, Amber E. King, Pharmd, Bcps

Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)

Despite increasing interest in providing interprofessional education (IPE) opportunities for health profession students, the logistics of scheduling and integrating diverse curriculums remain challenging. Several models to address these potential barriers have been proposed and utilized (Blue et al, 2010). Faculty from three colleges within Thomas Jefferson University developed an asynchronous online interprofessional course as one solution to overcome logistical barriers to IPE.

Interprofessional Grand Rounds is offered to third year pharmacy students and second year occupational therapy (OT) students in the fall semester. The course utilizes a variety of learning activities to evaluate the influence of current public health and …

Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)

At Jefferson Health is all we do, but at Jefferson College of Nursing (JCN), Health is H.E.R.E (humanistic, evidenced-based, reflective, excellence in clinical leaders). With a redesign of the undergraduate nursing curriculum, Jefferson College of Nursing (JCN) has transformed the way nurses of the 22nd century will practice, with a focus on caring for patients in all areas of the care continuum. The newly designed curriculum centers around four themes that are threaded throughout, Innovation, Practice Excellence, Interprofessional Collaboration, and Population Health. JCN believes that patients are partners in their health and that care is a collaborative effort.

To model …

My Brother's A Jerk And Dad's Gonna Spank Him: Roles And Relations In Obadiah, Aletta Stumo

School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses

This paper presents research and analysis on the use of violence in the Book of Obadiah to make claims of a restored strong masculinity for God, the nation of all-Israel, and the author. The paper finds that these claims can only partially be validated due to the violent nature of the threats and due to how the exile ended.

Fnp Led Mobile Health Services For The Homeless Population, Tenzin D. Lama Dec 2015

Fnp Led Mobile Health Services For The Homeless Population, Tenzin D. Lama

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

A small percentage of the U.S. population uses the greatest portion of the healthcare services. Homeless people are often such a group of “super-utilizers” of the healthcare system. Due to multiple medical and psychosocial conditions, people experiencing homelessness face numerous barriers to accessing healthcare, thus leading increased utilization of hospitals and emergency departments (EDs) services. Many of these events are preventable through improved primary care interventions. The literature on Respite/Recuperative Care, Transitional Care, and Mobile Health interventions have shown effectiveness in providing safe and quality care to homeless individuals during the critical transitional period post hospital discharge while also reducing …

Continuum Theory Of Amorphous Nanophases, Alexander Umantsev Dec 2015

Continuum Theory Of Amorphous Nanophases, Alexander Umantsev

College of Health, Science, and Technology

A number of very different recent experiments with nanoparticles produced very similar results: in NPs of sizes above critical the sequence of transformations is similar to that of the bulk while in NPs of sizes below the critical a novel, amorphous (disordered) phase appears and remains stable in a significant domain of variation of the control parameters. In a series of recent publications, the author tried to analyze the origin of this phase. He has developed a field theory of the nanophase stability, which claims that the phase that appears in NPs of sizes below the critical is a transition …

Teaching Compassion In Prison: A Key To Learning, Em Strang Dec 2015

Teaching Compassion In Prison: A Key To Learning, Em Strang

Journal of Prison Education and Reentry (2014-2023)

In a project with long-term prisoners at HMP Dumfries, Scotland, tutors and students explore the notion and application of compassion, focusing in particular on the ways in which understanding compassion enables learning – not just the learning of academic subjects but also of interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence. The project highlights the benefits of teaching a so-called extracurricular subject, at the same time as revealing its centrality to learning in the first place. A lack of adequate teaching time in prison, and the fact that compassion is not considered a core subject in education, are both cited as obstacles in …

Preoperative Education: A Patient-Centered Care Approach, Gia L. Wendt

Master's Projects and Capstones

Abstract

This project addresses the need for delivering high quality preoperative education to the Arabic speaking patient population served by Sharp Healthcare’s orthopedic service line. A goal set during the institution’s 2015 The Joint Commission Disease-Specific Care survey is to discharge major joint patients to home in two days or less. Data abstracted from Sharp Healthcare’s orthopedic registry revealed that only 30% of Arabic speaking patients are meeting this goal. The current process for educating Arabic speaking patients preoperatively during a one to one educational session with a third party interpreter takes three hours, costs $402.00 per patient, and education …
