Depression With Pain Co Morbidity Effect On Quality Of Life Among Hiv Positive Patients In Uganda: A Cross Sectional Study, Shirley Moore, Martha Sajatovic
Faculty Scholarship
Background: Depression with pain comorbidity (DPC) has not been clearly defined among HIV positive patients in sub-Saharan Africa. It still remains a challenge despite many studies in Africa documenting a high prevalence of pain and depression among people living with HIV/AIDS. Both are associated with a grave impact on the health related outcomes in this pandemic. This study aimed at determining the prevalence, factors associated and effect on quality of life of DPC among HIV positive patients. Methods: In a cross-sectional survey, 345 HIV positive patients were enrolled into the study. Using a pre-tested standardised questionnaire the presence of DPC …

Achieving good athletic results at a high level has become a defining feature of our modern era. This did not occur by chance, but rather as a result of utilizing scientific knowledge, research methods, and theories of sports training. The problem of the study lies in the fact that all rehabilitation programs in specialized centers rely solely on the experience of the treating physician from a purely medical perspective. Therefore, the researchers decided to develop a rehabilitation program using exercises based on modern scientific principles (PNF) to rehabilitate injuries of the lateral ligaments of the knee joint. This program was …

Entropyexplorer: An R Package For Computing And Comparing Differential Shannon Entropy, Kai Wang, Charles A. Philips, Arnold M. Saxton, Michael A. Langston
Computing: Faculty Publications
Background: Differential Shannon entropy (DSE) and differential coefficient of variation (DCV) are effective metrics for the study of gene expression data. They can serve to augment differential expression (DE), and be applied in numerous settings whenever one seeks to measure differences in variability rather than mere differences in magnitude. A general purpose, easily accessible tool for DSE and DCV would help make these two metrics available to data scientists. Automated p value computations would additionally be useful, and are often easier to interpret than raw test statistic values alone.
Results: EntropyExplorer is an R package for calculating DSE, DCV and …

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) - despite advances in prevention and medical treatment options - remains prevalent among older adults, often resulting in functional losses that negatively affect the mental health of older adults. In particular, the prevalence of both anxiety and depression in patients with AMD is high. Along with medical treatment options, low vision rehabilitation and AMD-specific behavioral and self-management programs have been developed and have demonstrated effectiveness in improving the mental health of AMD patients. This article reviews the prevalence of anxiety and depression in patients with advanced AMD, discusses potential mechanisms accounting for the development of depression …

Lower-Dimensional Black Hole Chemistry, Antonia M. Frassino, Robert B. Mann, Jonas R. Mureika

The connection between black hole thermodynamics and chemistry is extended to the lower-dimensional regime by considering the rotating and charged Bañados, Teitelboim, and Zanelli (BTZ) metric in the (2 þ 1)-dimensional and (1 þ 1)-dimensional limits of Einstein gravity. The Smarr relation is naturally upheld in both BTZ cases, where those with Q ≠ 0 violate the reverse isoperimetric inequality and are thus superentropic. The inequality can be maintained, however, with the addition of a new thermodynamic work term associated with the mass renormalization scale. The D → 0 limit of a generic D þ 2-dimensional Einstein gravity theory is …

This article analyses the relationship between discourse and identity in the case of the People’s Republic of China in Africa. It assumes that the interests of the Chinese government in Africa can be understood from a theoretical constructivist approach. So, the activities of International Development Cooperation of China into Africa are a result of material and ideational aspirations. Thus, the ties of China in Africa have been boosted by the identity of the Chinese state in the international arena. This paper is based on a study on the phenomenon of loan diversion. Based on a primary survey carried out in two districts of West Bengal, India, it identifies association between the socio- economic and demographic characteristics of the borrowers to the incidences of loan diversion (that is a permanent shifting of loans for purposes other than the stated one); and the extent of such loan diversion. The descriptive analysis reveals that loans mostly from microfinance institutions are diverted. Econometric analysis shows that probability of loan diversion is high for groups who openly reveal support for political parties, apparently pointing towards …

Experiences Of Coming Out In Japan: Negotiating “Perceived Homophobia”, Kotona Motoyama
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
Heteronormative society requires non-heterosexuals to come out in order to be recognized. Coming out is often the most challenging experience for non-heterosexuals and heteronormativity and homophobia are two powerful obstacles that they have to deal with. This paper considers how non-heterosexuals come out to themselves and to heterosexual others under the effect of Japanese cultural norms. Interviews with 24 non-heterosexuals and their experiences revealed that they have to deal with not only heteronormativity and homophobia like non-heterosexuals in the Western culture, but also “perceived homophobia,” which is created by the expectation of “respectable Japanese selves.” Thus, coming out in Japan …

Socioeconomic Disparities In Physical Activity Participation: An Exploratory Study Using Malay Sample, Yong Kang Cheah
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
The objective of the present study is to examine the effects of socioeconomic factors on participation in physical activity among Malays in Malaysia. Drawing on a nationally representative sample that contains 17,515 respondents, a logit model is developed to estimate the likelihood of adopting a physically active lifestyle. The results of the present study show that income, age, sex, education, house locality, and employment status are significantly related to the levels of physical activity. In particular, there are negative relationships between higher-income earners, the elderly, females, the less-educated, urban dwellers, and the non-working adults, and the likelihood of being physically …

Reconciliation As Free-Floating Signification: Reconciliation After 2014 Coup In Thailand, Siwach Sripokangkul
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
The word reconciliation has become common throughout Thai society since the aftermath of the massacres of Red Shirt protesters in the heart of Bangkok in the months April and May 2010, which killed around a hundred people and injured 2,000 more. The word came into use by the government since the massacres, and has become an even more regular part of government discourse since the military’s successful May 22, 2014 coup d’état against Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra. The need for reconciliation stems from the incidents of national unrest created by protesters demanding Shinawatra’s resignation and the dissolution of her government …
