The Genus Auyantepuia González-Sponga, 1978 Is Confirmed As A Synonym Of Broteochactas Pocock, 1893 (Scorpiones: Chactidae), Michael E. Soleglad, Victor Fet

Euscorpius

The genus Auyantepuia González-Sponga, 1978 is confirmed as a synonym of Broteochactas Pocock, 1893 (Scorpiones: Chactidae). It was correctly synonymized with Broteochactas by Francke & Boos (1986) and listed as such by Soleglad & Fet (2003) but resurrected by Lourenço & Araújo (2004). We reconfirm that the generic name Auyantepuia, based on the type species Broteochactas scorzai Dagert, 1957 from Venezuela, is a synonym of Broteochactas, based on the type species Broteochactas nitidus Pocock, 1893 from Trinidad. All other seven “short-fingered” species from French Guiana and Brazil, classified by Lourenço & Araújo (2004) under Auyantepuia, belong to …

We lived in a place where cable didn’t exist. Our water was pumped from a well, our electricity streaming in on a TVA river wave. We lived in Izard County, Arkansas, where dirt roads ribboned through hills, where people were all but waiting on a filmmaker to document their poverty.

But we had a satellite dish in our front yard. A marvel of engineering, a jellyfish puffing toward the sky. Its frame stiff, shiny, a monument to mass communication. According to my father, we were devotees of manufacturing, people who made an art out of industry. The satellite dish, the …

Continuum Theory Of Amorphous Nanophases, Alexander Umantsev

College of Health, Science, and Technology

A number of very different recent experiments with nanoparticles produced very similar results: in NPs of sizes above critical the sequence of transformations is similar to that of the bulk while in NPs of sizes below the critical a novel, amorphous (disordered) phase appears and remains stable in a significant domain of variation of the control parameters. In a series of recent publications, the author tried to analyze the origin of this phase. He has developed a field theory of the nanophase stability, which claims that the phase that appears in NPs of sizes below the critical is a transition …

Teaching Compassion In Prison: A Key To Learning, Em Strang

Journal of Prison Education and Reentry (2014-2023)

In a project with long-term prisoners at HMP Dumfries, Scotland, tutors and students explore the notion and application of compassion, focusing in particular on the ways in which understanding compassion enables learning – not just the learning of academic subjects but also of interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence. The project highlights the benefits of teaching a so-called extracurricular subject, at the same time as revealing its centrality to learning in the first place. A lack of adequate teaching time in prison, and the fact that compassion is not considered a core subject in education, are both cited as obstacles in …

Prospectus Elements: Increasing Pediatric Immunization Rates, Catherine Le

Master's Projects and Capstones

There has been a recent outbreak of Measles and the majority who contracted the disease were unvaccinated (CDC, 2015). An increase in pertussis cases from 2013 to 2014 have occurred as well from 28,639 cases to 32,971 in 2014 (CDC, 2015). This is endangering the community, and putting infants and the younger generation at risk. Increasing immunization rates for patients to be fully immunized has become crucial. Being fully immunized not only reduces their chances of getting these diseases, but also helps the rest of the population who are too young to get these vaccines (Daly, Matthew F. & Glanz, …

Master's Projects and Capstones

The Wilderness Act of 1964 gave the federal land management agencies—the National Park Service, United States Forest Service, U.S Fish and Wildlife Service, and Bureau of Land Management—the authority to identify, propose, and manage lands as wilderness. Wilderness, once approved by Congress for inclusion in the National Wilderness Preservation System, is offered the highest form of land preservation in the nation. However, the wilderness identification process used by the implementing agencies is based on a half-century old statute with an aging definition of wilderness. While designated wilderness can protect the plant and wildlife communities within its borders from direct anthropogenic …
