Qualitative Contributions To A Randomized Controlled Trial Addressing Hiv/Aids-Stigma In Medical Students, Melissa Marzán-Rodríguez, Nelson Varas-Diaz, Torsten Neilands
The Qualitative Report
Specialized training for healthcare professionals (HCP) in order to reduce HIV/AIDS related stigma must be part of a public health model for HIV/AIDS. Tested interventions to reduce HIV/AIDS related stigma among HCP have been mostly absent from these efforts. A qualitative approach was used to assess stigma reduction within a traditional randomized controlled design in order to better understand how our current stigma intervention worked and was understood by 2nd year medical students. After conducting a quantitative follow up survey one-year post intervention we conducted 20 in-depth qualitative interviews with a subsample of our intervention group participants as part of …

The Status Of Fishes In The Missouri River, Nebraska: Selected Ancient Fishes, Kirk D. Steffensen
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
Several ancient fish species have inhabited the Missouri River and its tributaries for thousands of years prior to major mainstem modifications and fragmentation. However post-anthropogenic modifications, populations of these ancient fish species have been highly diminished. Therefore, the objective of this study was to use historic and current ichthyological records to determine the past and present status for Chestnut Lamprey Ichthyomyzon castaneus, Silver Lamprey Ichthyomyzon unicuspis, Bowfin Amia calva, American Eel Anguilla rostrata, and Burbot Lota lota. Currently, these species are rarely captured and perhaps extirpated from Nebraska waters.

The Qualitative Report
Data collection is critical to the social research process. When implemented correctly, data collection enhances the quality of a social research study. However, doctoral students and early career researchers may encounter challenges with data collection. This article reports on the data collection challenges in dissertation research encountered by doctoral students enrolled in a public health program at a southeastern United States urban university. Each doctoral student shared at least one challenge and how it affected the data collection process. Additionally, the doctoral students shared how the identified challenges were addressed or suggested recommendations. Understanding these experiences of doctoral students is …

Dispute Resolution Under The Principal Irish Forms Of Building Contract, Tony Cunningham
Dispute Resolution Under The Principal Irish Forms Of Building Contract, Tony Cunningham
Other Resources
The construction industry is known to be litigious (Latham, 1994). This is hardly surprising given the industry’s fragmented nature in which project teams comprising an extensive network of employers, designers and constructors are brought together to deliver once-off projects, following which, the organisation is almost always disbanded. The short term objectives of the various groupings are often competing and occasionally incompatible. For example, many employers will wish to minimise costs in developing a project, designers may resist pressures on budgets in order to safeguard their ‘brand’, and the commercial imperative of maximising profit will drive contractors towards charging what the …

The Case For The International Governance Of Immigration, Javier S. Hidalgo
The Case For The International Governance Of Immigration, Javier S. Hidalgo
Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications
States have rights to unilaterally determine their own immigration policies under international law and few international institutions regulate states’ decision-making about immigration. As a result, states have extensive discretion over immigration policy. In this paper, I argue that states should join international migration institutions that would constrain their discretion over immigration. Immigration restrictions are morally risky. When states restrict immigration, they risk unjustly harming foreigners and restricting their freedom. Furthermore, biases and epistemic defects pervasively influence states’ decision-making about immigration policy. States should transfer some of their decision-making authority over immigration to more reliable institutions in order to mitigate the …

Read Receipts Feature In Mobile Platform: An Investigation Study Based On Social Tie Between The Sender And Receiver, Lujayn Alhddad
Theses
Read receipts is a built-in feature in all mobile instant messaging applications. The number of mobile instant messaging applications users is steadily increasing as a result of increasing the number of smartphone owners. This study investigated people's desire of using the read receipts based on the nature of the relationship between the sender and receiver. The research classifies relationships as strong and weak ties. An online survey was conducted, in which the majority of the participants were Middle Eastern. The survey investigated two factors that affect people's desire of using the read receipts feature, the social tie with the sender …

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND: Malaria is associated with haemolysis and the release of plasma haem. Plasma haem can cause endothelial injury and organ dysfunction, and is normally scavenged by haemopexin to limit toxicity. It was hypothesized that dysregulation of the haem-haemopexin pathway contributes to severe and fatal malaria infections.
METHODS: Plasma levels of haemin (oxidized haem), haemopexin, haptoglobin, and haemoglobin were quantified in a case-control study of Ugandan children with Plasmodium falciparum malaria. Levels at presentation were compared in children with uncomplicated malaria (UM; n = 29), severe malarial anaemia (SMA; n = 27) or cerebral malaria (CM; n = 31), and evaluated …

Use Of A Task-Oriented Approach In The Physical Therapy Management Of A Patient Following A Posterior Inferior Cerebellar Artery Stroke: A Case Report, Erika Derks
Case Report Papers
Background and Purpose: Stroke is the leading cause of long term disability in the United States. Despite the prevalence of stroke, there is minimal research on physical therapy interventions for patients with cerebellar stroke. The purpose of this case report is to describe a multidimensional intervention program for a patient following a cerebellar stroke, emphasizing a task-oriented approach and motor learning principles. Case Description: The patient was a 78-year-old female who had a right posterior inferior cerebellar artery stroke. She received daily physical therapy for four and a half weeks in the acute rehabilitation setting. The examination revealed deficits in …
Internationalization Of High-Tech Enterprises, Nelly Daszkiewicz
Internationalization Of High-Tech Enterprises, Nelly Daszkiewicz
European Management Studies
In the 1980s a growing group of enterprises operating primarily in the high technology branches was recognized. These firms entered the international markets faster than enterprises operating in more traditional sectors. In addition, these firms gained a competitive advantage resulting from knowledge (knowledge-based competitive advantage). Moreover, significant differences in motivation, goals, methods, and intensity of internationalization of high-tech firms as compared to those operating in traditional sectors were observed. The study of early and rapid internationalization continues to this day. In recent years, mainly due to changes in the business environment, we observe their dynamic development. The aim of this …
Institutionalization Of Spontaneous Changes In The Process Of Internationalization Of Enterprises, Zofia Patora-Wysocka
Institutionalization Of Spontaneous Changes In The Process Of Internationalization Of Enterprises, Zofia Patora-Wysocka
European Management Studies
The article is an attempt of a theoretical and empirical analysis of the concept of institutionalization of spontaneous actions in the process of internationalization of enterprises. In the article the process of institutionalization of changes is perceived from the processual perspective in management, where everyday actions within routinely repeated practice constitute an important cognitive background of the analysis. International entrepreneurship is described in the literature in both behavioral and situational contexts. Internationalization, in turn, is described in the literature on this subject as a rapid or evolutionary process. Internationalization of the company can be a result of entrepreneurial activities of …
Socio-Cognitive Determinants Of Entrepreneurial Intentions, Aleksandra Wąsowska
Socio-Cognitive Determinants Of Entrepreneurial Intentions, Aleksandra Wąsowska
European Management Studies
The aim of this study is to investigate socio-cognitive determinants of entrepreneurial intentions of business students in Poland. Based on the extant literature, grounded mostly in the socio-cognitive theory of Albert Bandura, I have formulated a number of hypotheses on the relationships between entrepreneurial intentions and entrepreneurial self-efficacy, positive orientation and entrepreneurial role models. The study uses a sample of 129 students of the Faculty of Management, University of Warsaw. The hypotheses were tested with the use of linear regression models. The results reveal that entrepreneurial self-efficacy positively relates to entrepreneurial intentions. Moreover, positive orientation and entrepreneurial role models are …
Organizational Creativity And Firm Performance: Towards A Multilevel Understanding, Katarzyna Bratnicka
Organizational Creativity And Firm Performance: Towards A Multilevel Understanding, Katarzyna Bratnicka
European Management Studies
Scholars have got to understand organizational creativity for its rich conceptual depth. In this paper I explore how the specific dynamic capability in today’s organizations – organizational creativity – provides the cause to reconsider assumptions surrounding this multidimensional concept from a multilevel point of view. To this end, I synthesize research on creativity in organizations and theorize connections between creative novelty-creative usefulness, and organization effectiveness across individual, team, and organization level, rooting my arguments in the claim that bottom-up and top-down processes shape key creativity-related aspects of effectiveness. Collectively, my arguments expand and, in some respects, challenge the theory on …
Expected Incomes As A Factor Of Entrepreneurship And A Firm Establishment Risk, Tomasz Bernat
Expected Incomes As A Factor Of Entrepreneurship And A Firm Establishment Risk, Tomasz Bernat
European Management Studies
Entrepreneurship takes a central place in the imagination of economists. It is one of the reasons for both growth and development of the economy as well as an individual human being. Determinants and market competences of entrepreneurs indicate the importance of income as a factor supporting the creation of enterprises or deciding on their market survival. Based on this background, the concept of the study was created: do people who want to earn more in the labor market declare entrepreneurship as a method of achieving this aim and do they declare and take the higher risk associated with it. This …
Cultural Entrepreneurship And Money: Start-Up Financing Structures In The Creative Industries, Elmar D. Konrad
Cultural Entrepreneurship And Money: Start-Up Financing Structures In The Creative Industries, Elmar D. Konrad
European Management Studies
Cultural and creative industries belong to the fastest growing sectors. About two-thirds of all new businesses in the creative and cultural industries need financial resources, but currently there are no findings regarding the financial structure and the very complex structure of this sector. For the first time this paper combines specifically the research on cultural and creative industries and start-up financing to examine the entrepreneurial factors inhibiting or stimulating the influence on capital acquisition. Based on a large empirical study, the funding structure for start-ups involving factors of orientation at the individual, corporate and social level is described by means …
How New Is Crowdfunding? The Venture Capital Evolution Without Revolution – Discourse On Risk Capital Themes And Their Relevance To Poland, Denis Frydrych, Tony Kinder
How New Is Crowdfunding? The Venture Capital Evolution Without Revolution – Discourse On Risk Capital Themes And Their Relevance To Poland, Denis Frydrych, Tony Kinder
European Management Studies
This conceptual paper discourses the emergence and development of crowdfunding as a step of the broader risk capital evolution. In doing so, we call for a more careful discussion about whether crowdfunding is the next big thing in risk capital mechanisms or a continuity of risk capital instruments, which matches technological regime changes and aligns to economic and social development. Based on a historical overview of types of funding, we elaborate that the risk capital market follows an evolutionary rather than revolutionary progression, where crowdfunding developed as a continuity of business angel, venture capital and microfinance mechanisms. This paper also …
Entrepreneurship In The Rural Development Process, Sławomir Jarka
Entrepreneurship In The Rural Development Process, Sławomir Jarka
European Management Studies
Development of small and medium enterprises in rural areas is an important factor of economic growth, which provides a rationale to place these entities at the heart of this paper. In this paper, varied conditions of rural entrepreneurship were described, with a focus on rural areas located far from agglomerations. The determinants of development of entrepreneurship were analysed. The factors affecting development of small enterprises were presented based on empirical data collected from small companies from Wielkopolskie Voivodeship.
Getting Off The Track To Found – The Influence Of Path Dependence On The Entrepreneurial Process, Philipp Berger, Jörg Freiling
Getting Off The Track To Found – The Influence Of Path Dependence On The Entrepreneurial Process, Philipp Berger, Jörg Freiling
European Management Studies
T he concept of path dependence describes mechanisms which can lead organizations to a lock-in on a certain path of development. Sydow et al. (2009) describe four basic self-reinforcing mechanisms (learning effects, adaptive expectations, coordination effects and complementary effects) and argue how they can lead to organizational lock-in along three distinct phases. This study investigates the influence of these mechanisms within the entrepreneurial venture creation process (Berger 2015c) and concludes in an argumentation that this process is by no means a determined path. Instead, the forces of path dependence actually lead entities out of the entrepreneurial gestation process in each …
