Bioavailability Of Cerium Oxide Nanoparticles To Raphanus Sativus L. In Two Soils., Weilan Zhang, Craig Musante, Jason C. White, Paul Schwab, Qiang Wang, Stephen D. Ebbs, Xingmao Ma

Publications

Cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO2 NP) are a common component of many commercial products. Due to the general concerns over the potential toxicity of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs), the phytotoxicity and in planta accumulation of CeO2 NPs have been broadly investigated. However, most previous studies were conducted in hydroponic systems and with grain crops. For a few studies performed with soil grown plants, the impact of soil properties on the fate and transport of CeO2 NPs was generally ignored even though numerous previous studies indicate that soil properties play a critical role in the fate and transport of environmental pollutants. The objectives …

Frand V. Compulsory Licensing: The Lesser Of The Two Evils, Srividhya Ragavan, Brendan Murphy, Raj Davé

Duke Law & Technology Review

This paper focuses on two types of licenses that can best be described as outliers—FRAND and compulsory licenses. Overall, these two specific forms of licenses share the objective of producing a fair and reasonable license of a technology protected by intellectual property. The comparable objective notwithstanding, each type of license achieves this end using different mechanisms. The FRAND license emphasizes providing the licensee with reasonable terms, e.g., by preventing a standard patent holder from extracting unreasonably high royalty rates. By contrast, compulsory licenses emphasize the public benefit that flows from enabling access to an otherwise inaccessible invention. Ultimately, both forms …

The Culture Of Environmental Awareness And The Nature Of Social Life In Iraqi Society: A Field Social Research In The City Of Diwaniyah, Nabil Imran Musa Al Khalidi

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

The environment is the surroundings or milieu in which a human being is born, grows up, and lives until his life ends and he is buried in its soil. God has endowed man with biological characteristics that distinguish him from other creatures. God created it in a balanced form that ensures the satisfaction of human needs and requirements. When population growth increased, and with it, human desires and ambitions, it began to deplete the environment's resources without regard for the right of future generations to benefit from environmental resources. Recently, the interest of all human societies in the environment has …

Inverted assonance is a form of word play that involves rearranging all the letters in a word or phrase to form a new one. Inverted assonance is formed by using the same letters as in the original word but in a different order. The term is used in everyday life to create a funny and clever inverted assonance. The study aims to rearrange letters in some way to form a word or phrase that has a meaning or is related to the original word, as well as to analyze inverted assonance in a poem. The present study is designed in …

Convertability And Oil Resistance Of Paperboard With Hydroxypropyl-Cellulose-Based Dispersion Barrier Coatings, Ville Leminen, Sami-Seppo C. Ovaska, Panu Tanninen, Juha Varis Dec 2015

Convertability And Oil Resistance Of Paperboard With Hydroxypropyl-Cellulose-Based Dispersion Barrier Coatings, Ville Leminen, Sami-Seppo C. Ovaska, Panu Tanninen, Juha Varis

Journal of Applied Packaging Research

The convertability and barrier properties of paperboard coated with hydroxypropyl-cellulose (HPC) based dispersions were studied via tray pressing trials, oil resistance measurements and microscopic analyses. To improve the oil resistance of the HPC-based coatings and to maximize their convertability, talc, gelatin and latex were used as additives in coating formulations. The oil resistance of the coatings improved to some extent with these additives, but scanning electron micrographs revealed the existence of pinholes particularly in coatings with a high HPC content. The coated paperboard samples were pressed into rectangular trays and the convertability of the paperboards was evaluated with a microscope. …

Consequences Of Shifts In Abundance And Distribution Of American Chestnut For Restoration Of A Foundation Forest Tree, Harmony J. Dalgleish, Charles Dana Nelson, John A. Scrivani, Douglass F. Jacobs

Forestry and Natural Resources Faculty Publications

Restoration of foundation species, such as the American chestnut (Castanea dentata) that was devastated by an introduced fungus, can restore ecosystem function. Understanding both the current distribution as well as biogeographic patterns is important for restoration planning. We used United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service Forest Inventory and Analysis data to quantify the current density and distribution of C. dentata. We then review the literature concerning biogeographic patterns in C. dentata. Currently, 431 ± 30.2 million stems remain. The vast majority (360 ± 22 million) are sprouts < 2.5 cm dbh. Although this number is approximately 10% of the estimated pre-blight population, blight has caused a major shift in the size structure. The current-day population has a larger range, particularly west and north, likely due to human translocation. While climate change could facilitate northward expansion, limited seed reproduction makes this unlikely without assisted migration. Previous research demonstrates that the current, smaller population contains slightly higher genetic diversity than expected, although little information exists on biogeographic patterns in the genetics of adaptive traits. Our research provides a baseline characterization of the contemporary population of C. dentata, to enable monitoring stem densities …

Berry V. State, 131 Nev. Adv. Op. No. 96 (Dec. 24, 2015), Brittany L. Shipp

Nevada Supreme Court Summaries

The issue before the Court was an appeal from a district court order dismissing a post-conviction petition for writ of habeas corpus. The Court reversed and remanded holding that the district court improperly discounted the declarations in support of the appellant’s petition, which included a confession of another suspect, whom the petitioner implicated as the real perpetrator at trial. The Court held that these declarations were sufficient to merit discovery, and an evidentiary hearing on Petitioner Berry’s gateway actual innocence claim.

Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments

We used a field excursion to the West Clearwater Lake Impact structure as an opportunity to test factors that contribute to the decisions a remote field team (for example, astronauts conducting extravehicular activities (EVA) on planetary surfaces) makes while collecting samples for return to Earth. We found that detailed background on the analytical purpose of the samples, provided to the field team, enables them to identify and collect samples that meet specific analytical objectives. However, such samples are not always identifiable during field reconnaissance activities, and may only be recognized after outcrop characterization and interpretation by crew and/or science team …

Comparison Of Novel Carboneous Structures To Treat Nitroaromatic Impacted Water, Benjamin M. Doane Dec 2015

Comparison Of Novel Carboneous Structures To Treat Nitroaromatic Impacted Water, Benjamin M. Doane

Theses and Dissertations

Carboneous materials such as carbon nanotube (CNT), granular activated carbon (GAC), and biochar are promising materials for the removal of organic contaminants from aqueous phase solutions. CNTs have astonishing mechanical strength, chemical and thermal stability and high surface area. While biochar, similar to GAC, having an extremely porous structure and high surface area, can be produced in more austere conditions with native materials. In this study, novel CNT-Hybrid structures (CNT-HS), hardwood pellet (HWP) Biochar and standard GAC (F-600 GAC) were used as adsorbents to treat water contaminated by a model nitroaromatic compound, 2,4-dinitrotoluene (DNT).

Continuous Decision Support, Jeremy P. Hendrix Dec 2015

Continuous Decision Support, Jeremy P. Hendrix

Theses and Dissertations

Organizations are often faced with portfolio construction efforts that require them to select one or more alternatives, subject to resource constraints, with the aim of achieving the maximum value possible. This is a well-defined problem with a number of analytically defensible approaches, provided the entire set of alternatives is known when the decision event takes place. Less well treated in the literature is how to approach this problem when the entire set of alternatives is unknown, as when the alternatives arrive over time. This change in the availability of data shifts the problem from one of identifying an optimal subset …

Creep And Oxidation Of Hafnium Diboride-Based Ultra High Temperature Ceramics At 1500°C, Anthony J. Degregoria Dec 2015

Creep And Oxidation Of Hafnium Diboride-Based Ultra High Temperature Ceramics At 1500°C, Anthony J. Degregoria

Theses and Dissertations

Ultra high temperature ceramics (UHTCs) are leading candidates for aerospace structural applications in high temperature environments, including the leading edges of hypersonic aircraft and thermal protection systems for atmospheric re-entry vehicles. Before UHTCs can be used in such applications, their structural integrity and environmental durability must be assured, which requires a thorough understanding and characterization of their creep and oxidation behavior at relevant service temperatures.

Optimal Attitude Control Of Agile Spacecraft Using Combined Reaction Wheel And Control Moment Gyroscope Arrays, Cole C. Doupe Dec 2015

Optimal Attitude Control Of Agile Spacecraft Using Combined Reaction Wheel And Control Moment Gyroscope Arrays, Cole C. Doupe

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores the benefits of combined control moment gyroscope (CMG) and reaction wheel array (RWA) actuation for agile spacecraft. Agile spacecraft are capable of slewing to multiple targets in minimum time. CMGs provide the largest torque capability of current momentum exchange actuation devices but also introduce singularity events in operation. RWAs produce less torque capability than CMGs but can achieve greater pointing accuracy. In this research, a combined RWA and CMG (RWCMG) system is evaluated using analytical simulations and hardware experiments. A closed-loop control scheme is developed which takes advantage of the strengths of each actuator set.The CMGs perform …

This study constructs a potential risk index (PRI) for the 65 U.S.-based commercial nuclear power plant (NPP) sites in relation to their surrounding populations. Four risk levels are defined: low risk, moderate risk, high risk, and very high risk. Discrepancies that exist in the sociodemographic characteristics of the host communities’ populations are examined as sorted by risk-level category. It is found that a greater percentage of minority groups are exposed to the highest levels of risk. In addition, percent “Hispanic” and percent “Other,” a grouping that includes multiracial, mixed, interracial, as well as Hispanic and Latino groups (for example, Mexican, …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The purpose of this work was to demonstrate the feasibility of building recurrent artificial neural networks with hybrid complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS)/memristor circuits. To do so, we modeled a Hopfield network implementing an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) with up to 8 bits of precision. Major shortcomings affecting the ADC's precision, such as the non-ideal behavior of CMOS circuitry and the specific limitations of memristors, were investigated and an effective solution was proposed, capitalizing on the in-field programmability of memristors. The theoretical work was validated experimentally by demonstrating the successful operation of a 4-bit ADC circuit implemented with discrete Pt/TiO2− …

Exploring End User Experience: How Can We Achieve Lifelong Engagement With Physical Activity Tracking Devices?, Mohammed Karim Impelee

Masters Theses/Capstone Projects

Activity tracking devices provide biofeedback information and encourage people to be active, however, their long-term usage has been problematic. This study explored the theory of reinforcement techniques and the theory of self- determination to enhance long-term usage of activity tracking devices.

A sample of 43 people was surveyed to examine their experience with activity tracking devices. A multi-regression analysis demonstrated significant results(R square=71.6% Sig level=0.012 N=43). The result indicates how individuals with different orientations likely to perceive the supportiveness of their devices and how likely they were to continue using or stop using their devices. Conclusion: understanding the principles of …
