Mechanisms Of Placental Dysfunction In Pregnancy Malaria, Jared Lybbert Jan 2015

Mechanisms Of Placental Dysfunction In Pregnancy Malaria, Jared Lybbert

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The molecular mechanisms by which pregnancy malaria affects the outcome of fetal development are unknown. Megalin, which has been well studied in kidney, has high expression in the placenta from early stages to term, and is proposed to be an important factor in extensive maternofetal exchange during development of the fetus. Pregnancy malaria (PM) is characterized by inflammation in placenta and is associated with low birthweight (LBW), stillborn birth, and other pathologies. It is hypothesized that PM disturbs megalin function/expression/distribution in the brush boarder of syncytiotrophoblast which, in turn, may contribute significantly to pathology of LBW. Our studies show that …

Nitrate Use Efficiency In Tobacco Plants Constitutively Expressing A Maize Nitrate Transporter Zmnrt2.1, Jessica Cruz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The NRT2 (high affinity nitrate transporter 2) family is a part of the iHATS (inducible high affinity system) that studies have shown is responsible for the influx of nitrate into the plant cell after provision of nitrate. The ZmNRT2.1 from Zea mays was constitutively expressed in Nicotiana tabacum. To assess how over-expression of this foreign NRT2.1 affects nitrate influx by plants, nitrate content in leaf and root tissue, gene expression, and vegetal growth were analyzed in media with deficient or high nitrate concentrations (0.1, 1, or 10 mM). Compared to wild type plants: the transgenic lines had a significantly larger …

Sex Estimation In Subadult Skeletons: A Test Of Eight Nonmetric Traits Of The Mandible And Ilium, Alyssa Shiloh Reinman Jan 2015

Sex Estimation In Subadult Skeletons: A Test Of Eight Nonmetric Traits Of The Mandible And Ilium, Alyssa Shiloh Reinman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Diagnosing the sex of subadult skeletal material is a difficult task for bioarchaeologists and forensic anthropologists. Metric and nonmetric techniques have been tested utilizing both fetal (Boucher 1957, Weaver 1980) and juvenile (Loth and Henneberg 2001, Weaver 1980) skeletal remains. Some metric techniques show promise in estimating the sex of juvenile skeletons, but most are found to be lacking in adequate accuracies (Holcomb and Konigsberg 1995, Weaver 1980). Nonmetric techniques have been found to be more accurate, performing better than chance (Loth and Henneberg 2001, Mittler and Sheridan 1992, Weaver 1980). This study adds to this conversation, utilizing the Hamann-Todd …

Sentimental Spirits: Saving The Soul While Seizing The Heart And Swaying The Mind, Michelle Rovere Jan 2015

Sentimental Spirits: Saving The Soul While Seizing The Heart And Swaying The Mind, Michelle Rovere

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

During the nineteenth century, African American women like Jarena Lee, Zilpha Elaw, and Julia Foote wrote narratives of their spiritual conversions. Through their efforts and the efforts of others like them, spiritual autobiographies became not only evangelical tools but also a means of shaping African American culture and American society in general. While some black women were working to claim power for their gender and race by writing spiritual narratives, other women, both black and white, were working with sentimental literature to achieve similar goals.

The Just War Tradition And International Law Against War: The Myth Of Discordant Doctrines, Mary Ellen O'Connell

Journal Articles

The international law regulating resort to armed force, still known by the Latin phrase, the jus ad bellum, forms a principal substantive subfield of international law, along with human rights law, international environmental law, and international economic law. Among theologians, philosophers, and political scientists, just war theory is a major topic of study. Nevertheless, only a minority of scholars and practitioners know both jus ad bellum and just war theory well. Lack of knowledge has led to the erroneous view that the two areas are in conflict. This article responds to this misapprehension, explaining the deep compatibility of international law …

The Growth Of Gothic Identity In Visigothic Spain: The Evidence Of Textual Sources, Erica Buchberger Jan 2015

The Growth Of Gothic Identity In Visigothic Spain: The Evidence Of Textual Sources, Erica Buchberger

History Faculty Publications

In recent years, scholars have made significant progress in understanding the transition from a Roman world to a medieval world in Spain. New archaeological excavations have added to our knowledge of the early medieval landscape, and increasingly analytical discussions of the labels used to describe people and objects have brought new depth to both historical and archaeological studies. In place of black and white visions of Goth vs. Roman and continuity vs. discontinuity, it has become more common to see Visigothic Spain as a complex mix of elements on their own terms. What it was like be a Roman in …

Dialogic Teaching Approach With English Language Learners To Enhance Oral Language Skills In The Content Areas, Abha Gupta, Guang Lea Lee

Teaching & Learning Faculty Publications

One of the major challenges that teachers encounter with English Language Learners (ELL) centers on the development of oral language. As teachers we are aware that language begins in infancy and develops continuously throughout one’s life via natural exposure to on a daily basis. For ELLs, however the lack of opportunities to practice a second language, underlines the need for teachers’ attention to their oral language development. Oral language requires proficiency in multiple modes of language, such as speaking and listening skills including both, receptive and expressive abilities. Oral communication is a necessary and essential skill for effective functioning in …

Preparing Teachers To Use Technology Effectively Using The Technological, Pedagogical, Content Knowledge (Tpack) Framework, Helen Crompton

Teaching & Learning Faculty Publications

Although technology is on the rise in society and schools, many teachers are not effectively incorporating technology into their teaching and learning. The lack of use can be attributed to teachers’ negative beliefs and feelings about technology. Effective teaching requires not only mastery of the subject content, pedagogical techniques, and technological affordances, but also how to achieve a successful dynamic interaction between those three factors. In this paper, the author has elucidated how these teacher beliefs and feelings are generate and the Technological, Pedagogical, Content knowledge framework (TPACK) framework is presented as a method of ameliorating these negative teacher impressions …

School Culture For The Mobile Digital Age, Helen Crompton, Diane Burke Jan 2015

School Culture For The Mobile Digital Age, Helen Crompton, Diane Burke

Teaching & Learning Faculty Publications

School culture is a nebulous blend of traditions, values, beliefs, and rituals built up over time. Recent mobile technologies are disrupting this culture in favor of learning that is personalized, on demand, ubiquitous knowledge. This paper provides a historical overview of the adoption of mobile technologies in school culture. An epistemological dissonance is uncovered regarding a slow rate of adoption and effective pedagogical practices. Finally, building from existing literature, a new framework is presented to elucidate a new school culture that involves students as curators of the web, creators of knowledge, and custodians of learning.
