Training Set Selection To Improve Crop Classification, Eric John Christeson
Training Set Selection To Improve Crop Classification, Eric John Christeson
Computer Science
In some classification problems, acquiring class label information is much more expensive than collecting attribute data. One such problem is crop classification from satellite imagery. While random sampling is one option, we demonstrate that a targeted training set selection can be beneficial, when the acquisition of class label information occurs in sets: In crop classification, the number of data points is given by the number of pixels in the imagery, while all data points within one field can be assumed to have the same class label. Each data point is constructed from multiple images throughout the growing season, and each …

Background
Prostate cancer is one of the most widespread cancers in men and is fundamentally a genetic disease. Identifying regulators in cancer using novel systems biology approaches will potentially lead to new insight into this disease. It was sought to address this by inferring gene regulatory networks (GRNs). Moreover, dynamical analysis of GRNs can explain how regulators change among different conditions, such as cancer subtypes.
Methods
In our approach, independent gene regulatory networks from each prostate state were reconstructed using one of the current state-of-art reverse engineering approaches. Next, crucial genes involved in this cancer were highlighted by analyzing each …

This article presents three case studies that closely examine various types of inter-actions taking place in writing center tutorials involving newly arrived pre-ma-triculated ESL writers. By learning what strategies tutors commonly use and how successfully the ESL writers negotiate their goals for the visit and the form and meaning of their text through this sample, this study aims to help identify what characterizes successful tutorials and what unique challenges English language learners might face when interacting with tutors. Results from these case studies show that it is not how many corrections tutors make or suggest for the students’ papers, but …

Phase transitions of amorphous alumina (a-alumina) nanotubes grown by atomic layer deposition and templated by carbon nanotubes were investigated with thermal annealing, transmitted Kikuchi electron diffraction, electron-irradiation-induced crystallization, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The resulting, engineered alumina nanotube arrays demonstrate a large range of tunable phases that are vital for understanding how alumina nanotube arrays can be applied for uses within biotechnology, catalysis, and other academic and industrial uses.

Anisotropy Of The Reynolds Stress Tensor In The Wakes Of Wind Turbine Arrays In Cartesian Arrangements With Counter-Rotating Rotors, Nicholas Hamilton, Raúl Bayoán Cal
Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
A 4 × 3 wind turbine array in a Cartesian arrangement was constructed in a wind tunnel setting with four configurations based on the rotational sense of the rotor blades. The fourth row of devices is considered to be in the fully developed turbine canopy for a Cartesian arrangement. Measurements of the flow field were made with stereo particle-image velocimetry immediately upstream and downstream of the selected model turbines. Rotational sense of the turbine blades is evident in the mean spanwise velocity W and the Reynolds shear stress −vw. The flux of kinetic energy is shown to be of greater …
Thermodynamic Grain Size Stabilization Models: An Overview, Mostafa Saber, Carl C. Koch, Ronald O. Scattergood
Thermodynamic Grain Size Stabilization Models: An Overview, Mostafa Saber, Carl C. Koch, Ronald O. Scattergood
Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Grain boundaries in a nanocrystalline microstructure produce an increase in the excess free energy of the system. Grain growth is a consequence of the thermodynamic driving force reducing this excess. Thermodynamic stabilization is an approach based on eliminating the driving force by suitable alloy additions that can produce a metastable equilibrium state at the nanoscale grain size, as opposed to kinetic stabilization where the grain growth mobility is restricted by pinning and/or drag mechanisms. The present paper reviews and compares various models proposed for thermodynamic stabilization.

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
A material-independent model to estimate the transient temperature distribution in a test probe quenched by immersion is presented in this study. This model is based on the assumption that, under one-dimensional unsteady heat conduction, the radial temperature distribution at the end of an interval belongs to the equation of a parabola. The model was validated using AISI 304 stainless steel test probes (Φ8×40 mm and Φ12×60 mm) quenched from 850 to 900 °C in water and in water-based NaNO2 solutions at 25 °C and in canola oil at 50 °C. Additionally, square test probes (20×20×100 mm) were quenched from 550 …

Cost growth is a persistent adversary to efficient budgeting in the Department of Defense. Despite myriad studies to uncover causes of this cost growth, few of the proposed remedies have made a meaningful impact. A key reason may be that DoD cost estimates are formulated using the highly unrealistic assumption that a program’s current baseline characteristics will not change in the future. Using a weather forecasting analogy, the authors demonstrate how a statistical approach may be used to account for these inevitable baseline changes and identify related cost growth trends. These trends are then used to reduce the error in …

Objective
This study was undertaken to better understand the high variability in response seen when treating human subjects with restorative therapies poststroke. Preclinical studies suggest that neural function, neural injury, and clinical status each influence treatment gains; therefore, the current study hypothesized that a multivariate approach incorporating these 3 measures would have the greatest predictive value.
Methods
Patients 3 to 6 months poststroke underwent a battery of assessments before receiving 3 weeks of standardized upper extremity robotic therapy. Candidate predictors included measures of brain injury (including to gray and white matter), neural function (cortical function and cortical connectivity), and clinical …

Fair Use, Girl Talk, And Digital Sampling: An Empirical Study Of Music Sampling's Effect On The Market For Copyrighted Works, William M. Schuster Ii
Oklahoma Law Review
This Article presents an empirical study of digital sampling’s effect on the sales of copyrighted songs and how this effect should influence the fair use analysis. To conduct this research, a group of previously sampled songs was identified and sales information for these songs was collected. The over 350 songs sampled in musician Gregg Gillis’s (also known as Girl Talk’s) most recent album presents an ideal dataset because the album’s instantaneous popularity allows for its influence to be analyzed through a comparison of the sampled songs’ sales immediately before and after release. Collecting and comparing sales information for these songs …

Realizations Of Infinite Products, Ruelle Operators And Wavelet Filters, Daniel Alpay, Palle Jorgensen, Izchak Lewkowicz
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
Using the system theory notion of state-space realization of matrix-valued rational functions, we describe the Ruelle operator associated with wavelet filters. The resulting realization of infinite products of rational functions have the following four features: 1) It is defined in an infinite-dimensional complex domain. 2) Starting with a realization of a single rational matrix-function M, we show that a resulting infinite product realization obtained from M takes the form of an (infinitedimensional) Toeplitz operator with the symbol that is a reflection of the initial realization for M. 3) Starting with a subclass of rational matrix functions, including scalar-valued ones corresponding …

Wiener-Chaos Approach To Optimal Prediction, Daniel Alpay, Alon Kipnis
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
In this work we combine Wiener chaos expansion approach to study the dynamics of a stochastic system with the classical problem of the prediction of a Gaussian process based on part of its sample path. This is done by considering special bases for the Gaussian space G generated by the process, which allows us to obtain an orthogonal basis for the Fock space of G such that each basis element is either measurable or independent with respect to the given samples. This allows us to easily derive the chaos expansion of a random variable conditioned on part of the sample …

Assembly of polymerase chain reactions at room temperature can sometimes lead to low yields or unintentional products due to mispriming. Mutation of isoleucine 707 to leucine in DNA polymerase I from Thermus aquaticus substantially decreases its activity at room temperature without compromising its ability to amplify DNA. To understand why a conservative change to the enzyme over 20 Å from the active site can have a large impact on its activity at low temperature, we solved the X-ray crystal structure of the large (5′-to-3′ exonuclease-deleted) fragment of Taq DNA polymerase containing the cold-sensitive mutation in the ternary (E–DNA–ddNTP) and binary …
Implicit Measures And Online Risks, Lucinda W. Wang
Implicit Measures And Online Risks, Lucinda W. Wang
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
Information systems researchers typically use self-report measures, such as questionnaires to study consumers’ online risk perception. The self-report approach captures the conscious perception of online risk but not the unconscious perception that precedes and dominates human being’s decision-making. A theoretical model in which implicit risk perception precedes explicit risk evaluation is proposed. The research model proposes that implicit risk affects both explicit risk and the attitude towards online purchase. In a direct path, the implicit risk affects attitude towards purchase. In an indirect path, the implicit risk affects explicit risk, which in turn affects attitude towards purchase.
The stimulus used …

Security Frameworks For Machine-To-Machine Devices And Networks, Michael Demblewski
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
Attacks against mobile systems have escalated over the past decade. There have been increases of fraud, platform attacks, and malware. The Internet of Things (IoT) offers a new attack vector for Cybercriminals. M2M contributes to the growing number of devices that use wireless systems for Internet connection. As new applications and platforms are created, old vulnerabilities are transferred to next-generation systems. There is a research gap that exists between the current approaches for security framework development and the understanding of how these new technologies are different and how they are similar. This gap exists because system designers, security architects, and …

Revitalizing Dormant Commerce Clause Review For Interstate Coordination, Alexandra B. Klass, Jim Rossi
Articles
Interstate coordination presents one of the most difficult challenges for American federalism as well as for energy markets and policy. Existing laws vest the approval of large-scale energy infrastructure projects such as interstate oil pipelines and high-voltage, interstate electric transmission lines with state and local levels of government. At the same time, state siting and eminent domain regimes routinely enable and even encourage state regulators to hold out from approving interstate infrastructure projects, hobbling any hope for interstate coordination. This Article analyzes how judicial review under dormant Commerce Clause principles and doctrine can promote better interstate coordination by discouraging regulatory …

Working-Life Enhancement Of The Underfill Adhesive, Cholthicha Varokorn
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
In flip-chip assembly process, the underfill is often dispensed into a package via a needle. Therefore, the viscosity of underfill adhesive has to be strongly controlled. The aim of this research is to study the methods for prolonging the working-life of an epoxy-based underfill. The underfill formulation process was modified and the effects of components in the underfill that cause the increase in viscosity of underfill at room temperature were studied. A rheometer was used to determine the viscosity-time relationship of underfill formulations. The results showed that the working-life of adhesive was extended from 2 hours to 6 hours with …

Thermal Conductivity Enhancement Of Epoxy-Based Adhesive Via Incorporating Inorganic Fillers, Chutiphong Sae-Sue
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Owing to a poor thermal conductivity of epoxy resin, the requirement of high heat dissipation in electronic packaging is not overcome. In this research, aluminium oxide (Al2O3) and silicon nitride (Si3N4) filled epoxy-based underfill adhesive were prepared by varying filler loading in the range of 0-5% by volume. Additionally, the epoxy composites were also incorporated with silane-treated particles. For the silane surface treatment of filler particles, N-(2-aminoethyl)-3-(trimethoxysilyl) propylamine (AETMP) was used as coupling agent to achieve good dispersion of particles in the polymer matrix. The results showed that when filler loading was increased, thermal conductivity of composites tended to be …

Development Of Bacterial Cellulose Membrane For Separation Of Ethanol-Water Mixtures, Theerawat Suratago
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
A bacterial cellulose (BC) hydrogel was modified via impregnation by diffusion of sodium alginate and cross-linking with CaCl2 solution. BC/alginate (BCA) membranes were configured, characterized, and used for pervaporation of mixtures of ethanol–water. The alginate molecules penetrated into the BC fibril network and filled the pores. The FTIR spectra indicated that there might have some interactions between the hydroxyl groups of the BC fibers and carboxyl groups of alginate molecules. The BCA membrane had a denser structure and better hydrophilicity than the unmodified BC membrane. The BET analysis results showed that the average pore size decreased with increasing alginate content …
