Spectroelectrochemistry And Modeling Of Enargite (Cu3ass4) Under Atmospheric Conditions, Robert Nick Gow Jan 2015

Spectroelectrochemistry And Modeling Of Enargite (Cu3ass4) Under Atmospheric Conditions, Robert Nick Gow

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Raman spectroscopy has been a useful technology for fundamental studies in the mining industry. Surface changes through oxidation and reduction reactions can be monitored in-situ, allowing the changes to be monitored in real time. In conjunction with cyclic voltammetry, to change the conditions at which a mineral surface is subjected to, reaction and reaction conditions can be identified. The results can then be plotted to create a map similar to that of an EH-pH diagram.

Non-Coding Rnas Of The Q Fever Agent, Coxiella Burnetii, Indu Ramesh Warrier Jan 2015

Non-Coding Rnas Of The Q Fever Agent, Coxiella Burnetii, Indu Ramesh Warrier

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Coxiella burnetii is an obligate intracellular bacterial pathogen that undergoes a biphasic developmental cycle, alternating between a small cell variant (SCV) and a large cell variant (LCV). Despite the remarkable niche and life cycle of C. burnetii, little is known about its modes of regulation and the roles that non-coding RNAs play in its growth and development. One such element is the intervening sequence (IVS); a 444-nt RNA element that is inserted within helix 45 of CoxiellaÆs precursor 23S rRNA. C. burnetii may have acquired IVS through horizontal transfer, and it has been subsequently maintained by all strains of C. …

Intraosseous Vascular Access In The Emergency Department, Nicole M. Helsper Devoe Jan 2015

Intraosseous Vascular Access In The Emergency Department, Nicole M. Helsper Devoe

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Practice Innovation Projects

Current guidelines and recommendations from the American College of Surgeons Advanced Trauma Life Support and the American Heart Association (AHA) include intraosseous (IO) access as a second-line alternative when delayed or failed peripheral vascular access occurs in emergent or trauma situations. IO access is underutilized in the emergency department (ED) due to registered nurses’ knowledge deficit, lack of training and education, and lack of supplies (Cheung, Rosenberg, & Vaillancourt, 2014). The National Association of EMS Physicians (NAEMSP) supports the use of IO access and describes IOs as a significant time saving intervention in achieving vascular access and decreasing the time …

Infinite Product Representations For Kernels And Iteration Of Functions, Daniel Alpay, Palle Jorgensen, Izchak Lewkowicz, Itzik Marziano Jan 2015

Infinite Product Representations For Kernels And Iteration Of Functions, Daniel Alpay, Palle Jorgensen, Izchak Lewkowicz, Itzik Marziano

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We study infinite products of reproducing kernels with view to their use in dynamics (of iterated function systems), in harmonic analysis, and in stochastic processes. On the way, we construct a new family of representations of the Cuntz relations. Then, using these representations we associate a fixed filled Julia set with a Hilbert space. This is based on analysis and conformal geometry of a fixed rational mapping R in one complex variable, and its iterations.

E-Mail Authorship Attribution Using Customized Associative Classification, Michael R. Schmid, Farkhund Iqbal, Benjamin C.M. Fung

All Works

E-mail communication is often abused for conducting social engineering attacks including spamming, phishing, identity theft and for distributing malware. This is largely attributed to the problem of anonymity inherent in the standard electronic mail protocol. In the literature, authorship attribution is studied as a text categorization problem where the writing styles of individuals are modeled based on their previously written sample documents. The developed model is employed to identify the most plausible writer of the text. Unfortunately, most existing studies focus solely on improving predictive accuracy and not on the inherent value of the evidence collected. In this study, we …

Winter Habitat Associations Of Blackbirds And Starlings Wintering In The South-Central United States, Matthew Strassburg, Shawn M. Crimmins, Patrick C. Mckann, Wayne E. Thogmartin

Human–Wildlife Interactions

Birds can cause extensive crop damage in the United States. In some regions, depredating species comprise a substantial portion of the total avian population, emphasizing their importance both economically and ecologically. We used the National Audubon Society Christmas Bird Count data from the south-central United States and mixed-effects models to identify habitat factors associated with population trend and abundance for 5 species: red-winged blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus), common grackle (Quiscalus quiscula), rusty blackbird (Euphagus carolinus), Brewer’s blackbird (Euphagus cyanocephalus), and European starling (Sturnus vulgaris). Overall, we found positive associations between bird …

All Works

In Digital Forensics, the number of person-hours spent on investigation is a key factor which needs to be kept to a minimum whilst also paying close attention to the authenticity of the evidence. The literature describes challenges behind increasing person-hours and identifies several factors which contribute to this phenomenon. This paper reviews these factors and demonstrates that they do not wholly account for increases in investigation time. Using real case records from the Dubai Police, an extensive study explains the contribution of other factors to the increase in person-hours. We conclude this work by emphasizing on several factors affecting the …

Faculty Publications

We designed, fabricated, and characterized a monolithically integrated optofluidic ring resonator laser that is mechanically, thermally, and chemically robust. The entire device, including the ring resonator channel and sample delivery microfluidics, was created in a block of fused-silica glass using a 3-dimensional femtosecond laser writing process. The gain medium, composed of Rhodamine 6G (R6G) dissolved in quinoline, was flowed through the ring resonator. Lasing was achieved at a pump threshold of approximately 15 μJ/mm2. Detailed analysis shows that the Q-factor of the optofluidic ring resonator is 3.3 × 104, which is limited by both solvent …

High-Resolution Bottom-Loss Estimation Using The Ambient-Noise Vertical Coherence Function, Lanfranco Muzi, Martin Siderius, Jorge E. Quijano, Stan E. Dosso Jan 2015

High-Resolution Bottom-Loss Estimation Using The Ambient-Noise Vertical Coherence Function, Lanfranco Muzi, Martin Siderius, Jorge E. Quijano, Stan E. Dosso

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The seabed reflection loss (shortly "bottom loss") is an important quantity for predicting transmission loss in the ocean. A recent passive technique for estimating the bottom loss as a function of frequency and grazing angle exploits marine ambient noise (originating at the surface from breaking waves, wind, and rain) as an acoustic source. Conventional beamforming of the noise field at a vertical line array of hydrophones is a fundamental step in this technique, and the beamformer resolution in grazing angle affects the quality of the estimated bottom loss. Implementation of this technique with short arrays can be hindered by their …

Eigenvector Pruning Method For High Resolution Beamforming, Jorge E. Quijano, Lisa M. Zurk Jan 2015

Eigenvector Pruning Method For High Resolution Beamforming, Jorge E. Quijano, Lisa M. Zurk

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper introduces an eigenvector pruning algorithm for the estimation of the signal-plus-interference eigenspace, required as a preliminary step to subspace beamforming. The proposed method considers large-aperture passive array configurations operating in environments with multiple maneuvering targets in background noise, in which the available data for estimation of sample covariances and eigenvectors are limited. Based on statistical properties of scalar products between deterministic and complex random vectors, this work defines a statistically justified threshold to identify target-related features embedded in the sample eigenvectors, leading to an estimator for the signal-bearing eigenspace. It is shown that data projection into this signal …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Operation of the array of coupled oscillators underlying the associative memory function is demonstrated for various interconnection schemes (cross-connect, star phase keying and star frequency keying) and various physical implementation of oscillators (van der Pol, phase-locked loop, spin torque). The speed of synchronization of oscillators and the evolution of the degree of matching is studied as a function of device parameters. The dependence of errors in association on the number of the memorized patterns and the distance between the test and the memorized pattern is determined for Palm, Furber and Hopfield association algorithms.

Defensive Routines In Engineering Managers And Non-Engineering Managers -- A Case Analysis, Tyria Riley, Elizabeth A. Cudney

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

There is a perception that engineers experience challenges in areas such as communication, conflict resolution, and leadership. Defensive routines are actions implemented as a result of being in an embarrassing or threatening situation. This research uses a case study approach to measure whether defensive routines are more common in engineering managers or non-engineering managers. Twenty-seven managers created case studies based on their unique experiences as managers. These case studies were scored, and the results of this research indicate that engineering managers employ defensive routines more commonly than non-engineering managers.

Vulnerable Populations' Perspectives On Climate Engineering, Wylie Allen Carr Jan 2015

Vulnerable Populations' Perspectives On Climate Engineering, Wylie Allen Carr

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Over the past decade, climate engineering—or the intentional, large-scale manipulation of the global environment to reduce or reverse anthropogenic climate change—has garnered increasing attention from scientists and policymakers. However, impacts from climate engineering will be unevenly distributed. Vulnerable populations already being disproportionately impacted by climate change might benefit or be made worse off. As such, legislators, members of the public, and academics alike have asserted that vulnerable populations deserve to have a say in the research and development of climate engineering technologies and the policies that will govern them. These calls have gone largely unfulfilled. The research presented in this …

The Last Wolves Of Isle Royale, Kasey Rahn Jan 2015

The Last Wolves Of Isle Royale, Kasey Rahn

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Isle Royale National Park, located in Michigan, is home to a wolf population that is in decline due to complications from inbreeding. Scientists and managers struggle to decide whether to intervene. Some scientists promote bringing new wolves to the island to restore the population because they say the decline is human-caused. Others promote “watchful waiting.” To date, the National Park Service has not interceded and is currently undergoing a management planning process. The issue raises questions about what it means to manage wildlife in an era of change. Should humans intervene to protect wildlife in the face of climate change …

An Adventurous E-Reader For Non-Linear E-Books, Emily Palmieri Jan 2015

An Adventurous E-Reader For Non-Linear E-Books, Emily Palmieri

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Non-linear books are published in print format as sequential text or digitally as collections of documents linked together via hyperlinks. These publication methods are problematic for readers and authors alike. Readers are often presented with unintuitive interfaces that do not indicate critical contextual information; authors struggle to order non-linear content into linear formats or to create and distribute their work in resource intensive digital mediums. While standard e-books might be a convenient format for non-linear books, current e-readers used to view them are severely limited; they mimic the format of physical books and fail to solve problems inherent in displaying …
