Small-Scale Projects And Their Potential For Urban Regeneration: Experiences From Eastern Germany, Christina Götz, Ian Cooper, Krassimira Paskaleva-Shapira
Economic and Business Review
The notion that urban living is composed of multiple, interacting aspects instead of only depending on the condition of buildings is widely known. However, once urban renewal is considered, talk automatically turns to large-scale rebuilding projects. To date, there has been little knowledge exchange about projects that take place on the local level, tackling the socio-cultural dimension of urban life. While not destroying, but transforming, what already exists into something socially valuable, such projects open up a set of opportunities for the urban community. This paper draws upon German case studies to propose a definition for such projects and to …

Period-1 Encodes An Atp-Dependent Rna Helicase That Influences Nutritional Compensation Of The Neurospora Circadian Clock, Jillian M. Emerson, Bradley M. Bartholomai, Carol S. Ringelberg, Scott E. Baker, Jennifer Loros, Jay Dunlap
Dartmouth Scholarship
Mutants in the period-1 (prd-1) gene, characterized by a recessive allele, display a reduced growth rate and period lengthening of the developmental cycle controlled by the circadian clock. We refined the genetic location of prd-1 and used whole genome sequencing to find the mutation defining it, confirming the identity of prd-1 by rescuing the mutant circadian phenotype via transformation. PRD-1 is an RNA helicase whose orthologs, DDX5 [DEAD (Asp-Glu-Ala-Asp) Box Helicase 5] and DDX17 in humans and DBP2 (Dead Box Protein 2) in yeast, are implicated in various processes, including transcriptional regulation, elongation, and termination, ribosome biogenesis, and mRNA decay. …
Neo-Liberal Reality In Post-Industrial Waterfronts Of The Post-Socialist Cities: The Polish Tri-City Case, Magdalena Szmytkowska, Klaudia Nowicka
Neo-Liberal Reality In Post-Industrial Waterfronts Of The Post-Socialist Cities: The Polish Tri-City Case, Magdalena Szmytkowska, Klaudia Nowicka
Economic and Business Review
A natural problem of post-industrial cities, which results from economic change, is their heritage in the form of degraded and unused post-industrial areas. They are often situated in central districts. Thus, it is obvious that local authorities consider them important, and prioritize them in spatial development. The very special and significant areas of coastal cities are waterfronts that have experienced, and are still experiencing, transformations, which constitute indelible elements of development. This paper is an attempt to evaluate the directions of waterfronts’ developments in Poland; taking into account the fact that while on the one hand, Polish cities are struggling …
Jižní Město As A Place To Live From The Perspective Of Two Generations Of Its First Inhabitants, Jana Barvíková
Jižní Město As A Place To Live From The Perspective Of Two Generations Of Its First Inhabitants, Jana Barvíková
Economic and Business Review
The paper introduces the results of a qualitative analysis of in-depth interviews with respondents in their thirties (who as children at the age of 2-3 moved with their parents into the Prague housing estate Jižní Město in 1977-1978 and spent their childhood and adolescence there) and with their parents. The dataset allows for the identification and analysis of phenomena and processes that are typical of housing estates and life in housing estates during the last thirty years in the context of society changes and maturing of the estates.

Exploring The Relationship Between Commuting Stress, Job Strain And Safety Behaviors While Commuting: The Dual Role Of Work-Related Rumination, Katrina A. Burch
Master's Theses
For those who commute to and from work on a daily basis, this is an activity that requires attention to both what one is doing and the environment, in order for the commute to be done safely. Although research has shown that work can spill over into home and other non-work domains, very little attention has been paid to the impact that work may have on the transition time between one’s work and home domains. The present study sought to examine the impact of daily commuting stress and end-of-day job strain on the safety of one’s commute through the experience …
Continuous Pth: A Tale Of Two Pathways, Thomas Estus
Continuous Pth: A Tale Of Two Pathways, Thomas Estus
Doctoral Dissertations
Parathyroid hormone (PTH) is a key factor in bone metabolism, able to stimulate both osteoblasts to cause bone formation and osteoclasts to cause bone resorption. The studies presented herein set forth to examine both the formative and resorptive pathways in light of a newly discovered inhibitory factor, serum amyloid a3 (Saa3). Saa3 is particularly germane to the PTH signaling pathway as it is secreted by cells of the osteoclast lineage in response to PTH stimulation of prostaglandin. Saa3 then enacts its inhibitory effects by acting back onto osteoblasts to inhibit PTH’s ability to stimulate cAMP/PKA signaling. In the absence of …
A Search For Correlations Between Gamma-Ray Burst Variability And Afterglow Onset, Sarah A. Yost
A Search For Correlations Between Gamma-Ray Burst Variability And Afterglow Onset, Sarah A. Yost
Physics Faculty Publications
We compared the time (or time limit) of onset for optical afterglow emission to the γ-ray variability V in 76 gamma-ray bursts with redshifts. In the subset (25 cases) with the rise evident in the data, we fit the shape of the onset peak as well and compared the rising and decaying indices to V. We did not find any evidence for any patterns between these properties and there is no statistical support for any correlations. This indicates a lack of connection between irregularities of the prompt γ-ray emission and the establishment of the afterglow phase. In the ordinary …

Location, Proximity, And M&A Transactions, Ye Cai, Xuan Tian, Han Xia
Finance
In this paper, we examine how the geographic location of firms affects acquisition decisions and value creation for acquirers in takeover transactions. We find that firms located in an urban area are more likely to receive a takeover bid and complete a takeover transaction as a target than firms located in rural areas, and takeover deals involving an urban target are associated with higher acquirer announcement returns, after controlling for the proximity between the target and the acquirer. In addition, a target's urban location significantly attenuates the negative effect of a long distance between the target and the acquirer on …

Translating Transformative Human Rights Education Through Visual Languages & Informal Spaces, Jazzmin Chizu Gota
Master's Projects and Capstones
This project examines methods, theories, and practices of translating human rights education through multiple vernaculars. Developed as a workshop in sociocultural syntax deconstruction and an educational human rights education website focused on the domestic population of the US, the project focuses on localizing human rights concepts to the public vernacular of the country. Human rights education (HRE) and media and information literacy (MIL) are expanded and redefined as social literacy, or the ability to navigate and decode the present, complex realities that both HRE and MIL were developed to address. Reframing media and visual arts as an archive of past …
