Natural Shorelines Promote The Stability Of Fish Communities In An Urbanized Coastal System, Steven B. Scyphers, Tarik C. Gouhier, Jonathan H. Grabowski, Michael W. Beck, John Mareska, Sean P. Powers
University Faculty and Staff Publications
Habitat loss and fragmentation are leading causes of species extinctions in terrestrial, aquatic and marine systems. Along coastlines, natural habitats support high biodiversity and valuable ecosystem services but are often replaced with engineered structures for coastal protection or erosion control. We coupled high-resolution shoreline condition data with an eleven-year time series of fish community structure to examine how coastal protection structures impact community stability. Our analyses revealed that the most stable fish communities were nearest natural shorelines. Structurally complex engineered shorelines appeared to promote greater stability than simpler alternatives as communities nearest vertical walls, which are among the most prevalent …

Characterization Of The Zn(Ii) Binding Properties Of The Human Wilms’ Tumor Suppressor Protein C-Terminal Zinc Finger Peptide, Ka Lam Chan, Inna Bakman, Amy R. Marts, Yuksel Batir, Terry L. Dowd, David L. Tierney, Brian R. Gibney
Publications and Research
Zinc finger proteins that bind Zn(II) using a Cys2His2 coordination motif within a ββα protein fold are the most abundant DNA binding transcription factor domains in eukaryotic systems. These classic zinc fingers are typically unfolded in the apo state and spontaneously fold into their functional ββα folds upon incorporation of Zn(II). These metal-induced protein folding events obscure the free energy cost of protein folding by coupling the protein folding and metal-ion binding thermodynamics. Herein, we determine the formation constant of a Cys2His2/ββα zinc finger domain, the C-terminal finger of the Wilms’ tumor suppressor protein (WT1-4), for the purposes of determining …
Laser Beam Optical Trapping Of A Nanoparticle, Rufaro Musvosvi
Laser Beam Optical Trapping Of A Nanoparticle, Rufaro Musvosvi
Posters, Presentations, and Papers
Optical trapping is the use of a laser beam, to trap small particles, similarly to using tweezers. A straight beam of light, focused correctly, can provide a force strong enough to control a nanoparticle. The objective of this project is to set up a Modular Optical Trapping Kit for the purposes of research and teaching. The project is split into two main parts. Part one is assembling the Trapping Kit, which includes building a Printed Circuit Board (PCB). Part two is measuring the necessary laser-force for different particles. This is an on-going project.

Flowers In Space Attacked By Aliens: Understanding The Spatial Ecology Behind The Devastating Damage By A Thistle Bud Weevil On Pitcher’S Thistle At Whitefish Dunes State Park, Wi, Zechariah D. Meunier
Flowers In Space Attacked By Aliens: Understanding The Spatial Ecology Behind The Devastating Damage By A Thistle Bud Weevil On Pitcher’S Thistle At Whitefish Dunes State Park, Wi, Zechariah D. Meunier
Lawrence University Honors Projects
One of the most threatened plants in the Great Lakes region is Pitcher’s thistle (Cirsium pitcheri), which inhabits sand dunes along the shorelines of Lakes Michigan, Huron, and Superior. In addition to risks from habitat loss and invasive species, C. pitcheri are imperiled by a thistle bud weevil (Larinus planus) that was originally distributed for biological control of nonnative thistles. During the summer of 2014, we empirically studied the devastating damage caused by L. planus on a population of C. pitcheri at Whitefish Dunes State Park, WI, to determine what factors influence the distribution and intensity …
Climate Change Discourse And Gendered Communication, Meagan Newsom Pierluissi
Climate Change Discourse And Gendered Communication, Meagan Newsom Pierluissi
Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses
Climate change is one of the most critical threats facing the 21st century. The effects on the planet, humankind, jobs, food supply, and other vital resources increase every year. Those communicating these details to the American public through mass media are doing so with gendered discourse. This study analyzes three speeches from predominant climate change communicators representing three different platforms: politician Al Gore, cultural figure Leonardo DiCaprio, and climate scientist James Hansen. Using discourse analysis informed by feminist standpoint theory, this study suggests that frames, words, phrases, and communication styles embedded in discussions of climate change continue to use gendered …
Incorporation Of Iodine Into Apatite Structure: A Crystal Chemistry Approach Using Artificial Neural Network, Jianwei Wang
Incorporation Of Iodine Into Apatite Structure: A Crystal Chemistry Approach Using Artificial Neural Network, Jianwei Wang
Faculty Publications
© 2015 Wang. Materials with apatite crystal structure have a great potential for incorporating the long-lived radioactive iodine isotope (129 I) in the form of iodide (I−) from nuclear waste streams. Because of its durability and potentially high iodine content, the apatite waste form can reduce iodine release rate and minimize the waste volume. Crystal structure and composition of apatite (A5 (XO4)3 Z) was investigated for iodide incorporation into the channel of the structure using Artificial Neural Network. A total of 86 experimentally determined apatite crystal structures of different compositions were compiled from literature, and 44 of them were used …
Respiratory Function Amongst Asymptomatic Hiv Positive And Hiv Negative Clients At Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi, Noah Kipkemei Murbiy
Respiratory Function Amongst Asymptomatic Hiv Positive And Hiv Negative Clients At Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi, Noah Kipkemei Murbiy
Master of Medicine in Internal Medicine
Background: Spirometry is used to asses respiratory function abnormalities. This is usually in reference to a validated normal range unique to a particular gender, race, age, weight and height. Majority of persons are usually asymptomatic until the expected FEV1 has decreased by 50%. Early intervention on the abnormalities even in this asymptomatic group has been shown to retard the rate of pulmonary deterioration. An unpublished audit at the Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi, revealed that majority of newly diagnosed HIV positive persons were admitted at the Critical Care Units with a pulmonary cause which later resulted in poor outcomes. This …
