Juvenile Sentencing In Illinois: Addressing The Supreme Court Trend Away From Harsh Punishments For Juvenile Offenders, Maureen Dowling
Juvenile Sentencing In Illinois: Addressing The Supreme Court Trend Away From Harsh Punishments For Juvenile Offenders, Maureen Dowling
Northern Illinois University Law Review
The United States Supreme Court has steadily been changing the way it approaches juvenile sentencing since 2005. This ideological shift has occurred as a response to the increase in biological and sociological studies, which point toward fundamental differences between juveniles and adults. This Note addresses how the new mandates by the Supreme Court have been implemented around the country, with a focus on statutory changes Illinois should make moving forward. Specifically, this Note argues that there are several adjustments Illinois will have to make in regards to the way it sentences juvenile homicide offenders, in order to be considered Constitutional …

PURPOSE. An alternative cancer therapy based on RNA interference (RNAi) has shown considerable promise but the possibility of resistance development is not known. This study explored the possibility of therapeutic resistance against siRNA nanoparticles in human cancer cells. METHODS. Two approaches to siRNA treatment were undertaken using lipid-modified polyethylenimines, a single high concentration (shock) and repeated increasing concentrations (gradual). The targets were Mcl-1, RPS6KA5 and KSP in MDA-MB-435 cells. RESULTS. There was no evidence of resistance development in shock-treated cells, while the decrease in mRNA levels of targeted proteins was not as robust in naïve cells in gradual treatment. However, …

The Art And Science Of Literary Study, Jamie Carr
The Art And Science Of Literary Study, Jamie Carr
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
The discipline of literary studies has recently gained powerful allies in the sciences and popular media. Scholars in the cognitive sciences, including neuroscience and cognitive psychology, have newly taken up literature's defense, conducting empirical studies to prove that literature has value—particularly researching whether fiction reading produces empathy. Both the media reports, and the empirical studies themselves, however, fail to acknowledge a long history of literary criticism and theory that articulate similar claims. Implicit in this subtext, is the privileging of empirical over interpretive or theoretical ways of knowing. In this discourse, literary criticism is broadly criticized for its variability and …
Feasibility Of A Group-Based Self-Management Program For Ethnically Diverse People With Hiv/Aids In Hawaii, Kathleen M. Sullivan, Jillian Inouye
Feasibility Of A Group-Based Self-Management Program For Ethnically Diverse People With Hiv/Aids In Hawaii, Kathleen M. Sullivan, Jillian Inouye
Asian/Pacific Island Nursing Journal
HIV/AIDS has transformed from a terminal to a chronic health condition affecting individuals for decades rather than years. Yet the development of care models that enhance client-focused HIV disease management skills is still in progress, especially in HIV resource-poor locales. This pilot study tested the feasibility of implementing the group-based Positive Self-Management Program (PSMP) to participants recruited from Oahu, Hawaii. The PSMP is a self-management program developed at Stanford University. A paucity of data exists on the efficacy of implementing the specialized PSMP that addresses unique needs of persons living with HIV. With a focus on enhancing self-efficacy beliefs, examples …

Structural Variation Of Alpha-Synuclein With Temperature By A Coarse-Grained Approach With Knowledge-Based Interactions, Peter Mirau, Barry L. Farmer, Ras B. Pandey
Faculty Publications
Despite enormous efforts, our understanding the structure and dynamics of α-synuclein (ASN), a disordered protein (that plays a key role in neurodegenerative disease) is far from complete. In order to better understand sequence-structure-property relationships in α-SYNUCLEIN we have developed a coarse-grained model using knowledge-based residue-residue interactions and used it to study the structure of free ASN as a function of temperature (T) with a large-scale Monte Carlo simulation. Snapshots of the simulation and contour contact maps show changes in structure formation due to self-assembly as a function of temperature. Variations in the residue mobility profiles reveal clear distinction among three …

Evaluation Of Anti-Migraine Drugs In An In Vivo Rat Model Of Chronic Migraine, Shannon Nicole Stiles
Evaluation Of Anti-Migraine Drugs In An In Vivo Rat Model Of Chronic Migraine, Shannon Nicole Stiles
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Approximately 2% of the US population is affected by chronic migraine (CM). CM is a recurring, neurological disorder characterized by painful headache, along with autonomic, gastrointestinal, and other somatic symptoms. Prolonged sensitization of the trigeminal system, which is implicated in CM, is comprised of peripheral primary trigeminal ganglion neurons that provide sensory innervation of the head and face and second order neurons in the spinal trigeminal nucleus (STN). The goal of my study was to evaluate anti-migraine drugs for their ability to inhibit ongoing peripheral and central sensitization of trigeminal nociceptors. An in vivo animal model was used to determine …
Investigation Of Nocifensive And Cellular Effects Of Dihydroergotamine In A Model Of Chronic Migraine, Jennifer Elise Denson
Investigation Of Nocifensive And Cellular Effects Of Dihydroergotamine In A Model Of Chronic Migraine, Jennifer Elise Denson
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
The goal of my study was to investigate the nocifensive behavioral and cellular effects of dihydroergotamine (DHE) and sumatriptan in a model of sustained trigeminal activation. Trigeminal nerves provide sensory innervation to the head and face and their activation has been implicated in migraine pathology. The most commonly prescribed medications for migraine treatment are the triptan class of drugs. However, triptans are not an effective therapy for all migraine patients and some develop triptan resistance. Ergot-derivatives, including DHE, could be a potential alternative for this subpopulation of patients. To cause activation of the trigeminal system, adult male Sprague Dawley rats …

Approaches To The Design Of Biotechnical Streambank Stabilization: Volume I—A Guide To The Literature, Dennis A. Lyn, John F. Newton
JTRP Technical Reports
Streambank stabilization has traditionally been performed with riprap for which reliable design and installation procedures are available. Due to concerns about the environmental impact of riprap, there has been increasing interest in more natural biotechnical (or bioengineering) alternatives. A review of the literature on biotechnical approaches to streambank stabilization has been performed, with a focus on those works that might be particularly useful in developing design guidelines or standards for the Indiana Department of Transportation. Works that synthesized the literature (up to about the year 2000) and so covered a broad range of topics, were examined, including monographs and manuals …

Nephrology Articles
Concomitant severe metabolic alkalosis, hypernatremia, and kidney failure pose a therapeutic challenge. Hemodialysis to correct azotemia and abnormal electrolytes results in rapid correction of serum sodium, bicarbonate, and urea but presents a risk for dialysis disequilibrium and brain edema. We describe a patient with Zollinger-Ellison syndrome with persistent encephalopathy, severe metabolic alkalosis (highest bicarbonate 81 mEq/L), hypernatremia (sodium 157 mEq/L), and kidney failure despite 30 hours of intravenous crystalloids and proton pump inhibitor. We used continuous renal replacement therapy (RRT) with delivered hourly urea clearance of ~3 L/hour (24 hour sustained low efficiency dialysis with regional citrate anticoagulation protocol at …

Grey (Halichoerus Grypus) And Harbor Seal (Phoca Vitulina) Bycatch And Depredation In New England Sink-Gillnet Fisheries, Laura N. Sirak
All Theses And Dissertations
Marine mammals interact with commercial fisheries via competition for resources, depredation (feeding on fish caught in gear), entanglement, and bycatch in fishing gear. In New England, gray seals (Halichoerus grypus) and harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) are often taken as bycatch in sink-gillnet fisheries and are believed to depredate fish in gillnets. As seal populations increase, interactions with fisheries are also likely to increase, affecting both seal stocks and the New England fishing industry. This study aims to understand seal bycatch in the New England sink-gillnet fisheries by identifying the spatial and temporal trends in bycatch as …

Total Synthesis And Derivation Of Humulones And Lupulones As Possible Biologically Active Agents, Lucas R. Sass, Kristopher V. Waynant (Mentor)
Idaho Conference on Undergraduate Research
Humulones and lupulones have affirmed themselves as key ingredients in the multi-billion dollar brewing industry. Originally exploited for their bacteriostatic properties, these compounds also exhibit high levels of biological activity against a variety of diseases. Although quantifiable, the isolation and separation of specific humulones and lupulones has proven difficult, thus establishing efficient synthetic routes will be of value to those desiring exact bittering qualities and to the pharmaceutical community. Our investigations are towards developing a synthetic route to a library of humulones, lupulones, and their derivatives as possible biologically active agents against myriad diseases. The key step in our efficient …
Cooking And Eating The Other: Contemporary Representations Of Domestic Workers In Popular Media, Ashley Mcfarland
Cooking And Eating The Other: Contemporary Representations Of Domestic Workers In Popular Media, Ashley Mcfarland
Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects (Full IR Collection)
The mass media governs relations among social groups, manufactures political sentiment and shapes opinions on economic relations between individuals to reproduce a self-perpetuating system of power for a minute elite. The construction and organized distribution of manipulated cultural images that communicate embellished or patently false messages about a social group is central to the success of a capitalist economic system. This thesis reveals how media production negatively influences public perception of housework and the women who perform the labor and thwarts efforts to obtain and enforce legislation to protect native and immigrant domestic workers. Using contemporary representations from The Help …
Mating-Type Locus Characterization And Variation In Pyrenophora Semeniperda, Julie Leanna Henry
Mating-Type Locus Characterization And Variation In Pyrenophora Semeniperda, Julie Leanna Henry
Theses and Dissertations
Pyrenophora semeniperda is a generalist fungal pathogen that occurs primarily on monocot seed hosts. It is in the phylum Ascomycota, which includes both self-compatible (homothallic) and self-incompatible (heterothallic) species. Homothallic fungal species contain complementary mating-type (MAT) idiomorphs in a single unikaryotic strain, while heterothallic strains contain a single MAT idiomorph requiring interaction between strains of complementary mating-types for sexual reproduction to occur. Because the majority of P. semeniperda strains contained either MAT1 or MAT2, this species was provisionally categorized as heterothallic. However, many strains contain both MAT idiomorphs and appear to be homothallic. These results warranted a closer look at …

Describing Spiritual Growth In An Online Religious Education Course: A Phenomenological Perspective, Benjamin Trevor Fryar
Theses and Dissertations
An estimated 33% of all college students take at least one online class (Allen & Seaman, 2013). Online classes are offered across a wide range of domains, including courses designed for spiritual development. Little research exists examining students' experiences in these types of classes. The purpose of this research is to help address this gap by describing the phenomenon of spiritual growth in an online religious education course. Brigham Young University-Idaho (BYU-Idaho) offers online courses designed to help students grow spiritually. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten students who took one of these classes and who reported positive gains in …

Histone Deacetylase 6 (Hdac6) Is Critical For Tumor Cell Survival And Promotes The Pro-Survival Activity Of 14-3-3Ζ Viadeacetylation Of Lysines Within The14-3-3Ζ Binding Pocket, Jeffrey Benjamin Mortenson
Theses and Dissertations
Our understanding of non-histone acetylation as a means of cellular regulation is in its infancy. Using a mass spectrometry approach we identified acetylated lysine residues and monitored acetylation changes across the proteome as a consequence of metabolic stress (hypoxia). We observed changes in acetylation status of non-histone lysines in tumor cells. Through the use of small molecule inhibitors of histone deacetylase enzymes (HDACs) and siRNA screening identified HDAC6 as a pro-survival regulator of lysine acetylation during hypoxia. The phospho-binding protein 14-3-3ζ acts as a signaling hub controlling a network of interacting partners and oncogenic pathways. We show here that lysines …

Beaver ponds and beaver-impounded vegetation are indicators of past or present beaver activity that can be detected from aerial photography. A method to quantitatively relate these beaver works with the density of active beaver colonies could benefit beaver management, particularly in areas lacking beaver population data. We compared historical maps (1961–2006) of beaver works at Voyageurs National Park, Minnesota, USA with concurrent aerial surveys of beaver colonies. We tested 2 landscape-scale models of beaver colony density previously developed for a period of beaver population expansion (1940–1986), but they failed to predict colony density after 1986, a period of declining beaver …
Impact Of Individual And Population-Scale Dynamics On Growth And Reproduction Of Two Morphologies Of Macrocystis In Central California, Sarah Jeffries
Impact Of Individual And Population-Scale Dynamics On Growth And Reproduction Of Two Morphologies Of Macrocystis In Central California, Sarah Jeffries
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Morphological plasticity is common among seaweeds and such form alteration often results in the modification of other physiological processes, such as growth or reproduction. This study explored the consequences of morphological plasticity by comparing two of the common growth forms of the giant kelp Macrocystis, an ecologically important genus in nearshore temperate ecosystems. The aclonal pyrifera morphology of Macrocystis grows in deep water and reproduces via the production and release of microscopic zoospores, while the clonal integrifolia morphology grows in shallow water and reproduces primarily by vegetative growth of its rhizome. The effects of morphology on reproduction, biomass and …

We have studied electron impact ionization of H2 and N2 molecules at intermediate energies to look for possible two center interference effects experimentally and theoretically. Here we report a study of the interference factor I for 250 eV electron-impact ionization. The experimental measurements are performed using a crossed-beam-type electron-electron coincidence spectrometer and theoretical calculations are obtained using the Molecular Three Body Distorted Wave Approximation (M3DW). We found that the I-factor demonstrated strong evidence for two-center interference effects for both H2 and N2. We also found that the I-factor is more sensitive to projectile angular scans …
