A general understanding of soil concepts and these interwoven relationships is essential to making sound land management decisions.

The Sense Of Loss In Jean Rhy’S Voyage In The Dark: The Absence Of Mother And Imagined Black Identity, Zita Rarastesa Jul 2015

The Sense Of Loss In Jean Rhy’S Voyage In The Dark: The Absence Of Mother And Imagined Black Identity, Zita Rarastesa

Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya

The sense of loss of a mother leads Anna Morgan to her imagined black identity. Being a Creole from Dominica, Morgan is alienated both in her home country and in London. Du Bois’s notion of double consciousness substantiates Morgan’s sense of alienation. The racial issue here is not only socially constructed, but it is also personally constructed, as Morgan does not consider England as her homeland although she is as white as English people. people. The character is struggling from identity conflict, as she internalizes the impact of the British colonialization to the black people in Dominica. She feels more …

Cerebellar Modulation Of Dorsolateral Striatal Dopamine Release: Functional Significance To Autism Spectrum Disorder, Chase Reid Presley Jul 2015

Cerebellar Modulation Of Dorsolateral Striatal Dopamine Release: Functional Significance To Autism Spectrum Disorder, Chase Reid Presley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a lifelong neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by significant impairments in social-interaction, repetitive behavior, and early onset. Several neuropathologies exist in individuals with ASD including cerebellar hypoplasia, a reduction in Purkinje cells, and an enlargement of the prefrontal cortex (PFC). These abnormalities have been found to alter dopamine (DA) neurotransmission in the mPFC and contribute to repetitive behaviors and cognitive deficits commonly found in ASD. The nigrostriatal pathway provides DA to the striatum where it acts to modulate proper action selection and motor control. Research now suggests that th cerebellum may modulate nigrostriatal DA release in the …

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

A study of 56 professors at five American universities found that a majority had little understanding of principles, well-known in the field of data curation, informing the ongoing administration of digital materials and chose to manage and store work-related data by relying on the use of their own storage devices and cloud accounts. It also found that a majority of them had experienced the loss of at least one work-related digital object that they considered to be important in the course of their professional career. Despite such a rate of loss, a majority of respondents expressed at least a moderate …

Mechanical Properties Of Laser-Sintered-Nylon Diamond Lattices, Clayton Neff Jul 2015

Mechanical Properties Of Laser-Sintered-Nylon Diamond Lattices, Clayton Neff

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Additive manufacturing offers a manufacturing technique to produce complex geometry prototypes at a rapid pace and low cost. These advantages advocate additive manufacturing for the design and production of cellular structures. Cellular structures are interesting because they contain a large amount of porosity (void space of air) to manifest a lightweight structure. Designs of cellular structures generate a periodic pattern; often of complex geometry, called a lattice.

There has been a significant amount of research to maximize specific stiffness of lattice structures but little to evaluate low-stiffness lattices. Low-stiffness structures benefit energy absorbance through bending of the lattice. This research …

Tanzania Journal of Science

This paper reports on the synthesis of 2-formyl-6-hydroxybenzoic acid (8) and 4-methoxyisobenzofuran-1,3-dione (10) from a renewable natural material Cashew Nut Shell Liquid (CNSL) achieved in five and seven steps, respectively. Anacardic acid was isolated from CNSL, dimethoxylated into (E)-methyl 2-methoxy-6-(pentadec-8-enyl)benzoate which was subsequently hydrogenated into methyl 2-methoxy-6-pentadecylbenzoate. Benzylic bromination of the methoxyester, and dehydrobromination afforded (E)-methyl 2-methoxy-6-(pentadec-1-enyl)benzoate which upon ozonolysis gave methyl 2-formyl-6-methoxybenzoate. Oxidation and dehydration of 8 formed methoxyphthalic anhydride (10). The work reported in this paper has further demonstrated the resourcefulness of cashew nut shell liquid as a renewable natural resource for synthesis of fine and industrial chemicals.

Unraveling Host-Vector-Arbovirus Interactions By Two-Gene High Resolution Melting Mosquito Bloodmeal Analysis In A Kenyan Wildlife-Livestock Interface, David Omondi, Daniel K. Masiga, Yvonne Ukamaka Ajamma, Burtram C. Fielding, Laban Njoroge, Jandouwe Villinger

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The blood-feeding patterns of mosquitoes are directly linked to the spread of pathogens that they transmit. Efficient identification of arthropod vector bloodmeal hosts can identify the diversity of vertebrate species potentially involved in disease transmission cycles. While molecular bloodmeal analyses rely on sequencing of cytochrome b (cyt b) or cytochrome oxidase 1 gene PCR products, recently developed bloodmeal host identification based on high resolution melting (HRM) analyses of cyt b PCR products is more cost-effective. To resolve the diverse vertebrate hosts that mosquitoes may potentially feed on in sub-Saharan Africa, we utilized HRM profiles of both cyt b and 16S …

Tradition, Culture, And The Problem Of Inclusion In Philosophy, Justin E. H. Smith Jul 2015

Tradition, Culture, And The Problem Of Inclusion In Philosophy, Justin E. H. Smith

Comparative Philosophy

Many today agree that philosophy, as an academic discipline, must, for the sake of its very survival, become more inclusive of a wider range of perspectives, coming from a more diverse pool of philosophers. Yet there has been little serious reflection on how our very idea of what philosophy is might be preventing this change from taking place. In this essay I would like to consider the ways in which our ideas about philosophy's relation to tradition, and its relation to other dimensions of human culture, influence efforts to promote greater diversity in the field.

International Law And Military Activities In Outer Space, Robert L. Bridge

Akron Law Review

The object of this review is to establish definitively the legal constraints which currently apply to military activities in space. Research has disclosed no single reference less than eight years old which examines all the issues to be discussed here. A great flurry of scholarly legal writing attended the launching of the Russian Sputnik in 1957, but comparatively little has been written since the late 1960's. Thus, much of the source material cited here is ten to fifteen years old.

Does Religion Promote Modesty? Correlational And Experimental Tests, Liana S.E. Hone Jul 2015

Does Religion Promote Modesty? Correlational And Experimental Tests, Liana S.E. Hone

Open Access Dissertations

Based on theorizing that long-term mating strategies are associated with greater religiosity, studies demonstrating that exposure to religious stimuli down-regulates characteristics associated with short-term mating strategies in men, and tentative evidence that women might sometimes pursue short-term mating strategies, I evaluated the effects of religiosity on modesty, a trait associated with women’s mating strategies. I predicted that females’ (but not males’) baseline religiosity would be positively correlated with their modesty, that is, negatively correlated with their skin exposure, on the premise that modesty is a characteristic typically associated with women’s (but not with men’s) short-term mating strategies. I also predicted …

Development Of Immunomodulatory Biomaterials For The Islet Transplant Niche, Ethan Y. Yang Jul 2015

Development Of Immunomodulatory Biomaterials For The Islet Transplant Niche, Ethan Y. Yang

Open Access Dissertations

Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) is a life-long autoimmune disease where immune cells destroy the beta cells of the Islets of Langerhans, eliminating the patient’s ability to secrete insulin in response to glucose. While the implantation of allogeneic islets into T1D patients can restore glucose control, the duration of the islet transplant is compromised by immune attack through both innate and adaptive pathways. Therefore, we sought to engineer biomaterial strategies to lessen immunological attack and improve transplant outcomes. This dissertation presents immunomodulatory biomaterials seeking to modulate the local transplant microenvironment, specifically: 1) the chemoselective tethering of TGF-β1 to PEG brush surfaces …

Pharmaceutical Science and Research

Cisplatin is a commonly used drug for cancer treatment by crosslinking DNA, leading to apoptosis of cancer cells, resistance to cisplatin treatment often occurs, leading to relapse. Therefore, there is a need for the development of more effective treatment strategies that can overcome chemoresistance. Myricetin is a flavonoid from fruits and vegetables, showing anticancer activity in various cancer cells. In this study, we found myricetin exhibited greater cytotoxicity than cisplatin in two cisplatin-resistant ovarian cancer cell lines, OVCAR-3 and A2780/CP70, and it was less cytotoxic to the normal ovarian cell line IOSE-364. Myricetin selectively induced apoptosis in both cisplatin-resistant cancer …

N-Acetylglucosamine Regulates Virulence Properties In Microbial Pathogens, Shamoon Naseem, James B. Konopka

Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology Faculty Publications

There is growing evidence that the sugar N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc) plays diverse roles in cell signaling pathways that impact the virulence properties of microbes and host cells. GlcNAc is already well known as a ubiquitous structural component at the cell surface that forms part of bacterial cell wall peptidoglycan, cell wall chitin in fungi and parasites, and extracellular matrix glycosaminoglycans of animal cells. Chitin and peptidoglycan have been previously linked to cell signaling as they can stimulate responses in plant and animal host cells [1–3]. Recent studies now indicate that GlcNAc released from these polymers can also …
