A Qualitative Analysis Of The Therapeutic Alliance From The Perspective Of Adolescents Who Stutter, Kelli D. Riggenbach

Master's Theses

There has been research outlining the importance of the client-clinician relationship in therapeutic outcomes; however, there is a relative lack of research as to the development of the therapeutic alliance in the area of fluency therapy, particularly with adolescents. The purpose of this investigation was to learn about the perceptions of adolescents who stutter regarding characteristics of effective and ineffective speech-language pathologists as well as how these adolescents perceive their own and their speech-language pathologist’s role in the therapeutic alliance. This study addressed the following questions: Q1 How do adolescents with fluency disorders describe their role within the therapeutic alliance? …

Adult Attachment Styles And Psychopathic Traits: A Relationship Mediated By Empathy And Emotional Regulation?, Chelsea Heim Aug 2015

Adult Attachment Styles And Psychopathic Traits: A Relationship Mediated By Empathy And Emotional Regulation?, Chelsea Heim

USC Aiken Psychology Theses

Psychopathic personality traits encompass an array of characteristics that emerge early in life and are influenced by insecure attachments between children and their parents. Disruptions in parent-child interactions also affect the development of empathy (Panfile & Laible, 2010) and emotion regulation (Waters, S. F., Virmani, E. A., Thompson, R. A., Meyer, S., Raikes, H. A. & Jochem, R., 2010), which contributes to lasting impairments in interpersonal working models about the self and others (Mack, Hackney & Pile, 2010). The interactions between psychopathy and insecure attachment, low levels of empathy, and the ability to regulate one’s emotions have been separately investigated …

Data were collected from relaxed muscles at the masseter, cheek, and lateral tongue surfaces in two positions: reclined on the side and seated with head tilted.

Results: Tissue stiffness differed …

Families, General Strain, Social Control And Adolescent Pain Killer Use, Melinda S. Furtaw Aug 2015

Families, General Strain, Social Control And Adolescent Pain Killer Use, Melinda S. Furtaw

Masters Theses

This study determines whether family structure or transitions alone influence adolescent use of pain killers, as previous studies in delinquency and substance use would suggest, or if there are potentially mediating factors. The theories of general strain and social control are drawn upon to create mediating variables of abuse and failing grade (general strain) as well as attachment and school suspension (social control). The study will use data from the National Survey of Adolescents (1995).

Binary logistic regression was used to estimate if family structure leads to increased odds of being abused, having a failing grade, and being suspended from …

Parent-specific gene expression (PSGE) is little known outside of mammals and plants. PSGE occurs when the expression level of a gene depends on whether an allele was inherited from the mother or the father. Kin selection theory predicts that there should be extensive PSGE in social insects because social insect parents can gain inclusive fitness benefits by silencing parental alleles in female offspring. We searched for evidence of PSGE in honey bees using transcriptomes from reciprocal crosses between European and Africanized strains. We found 46 transcripts with significant parent-of-origin effects on gene expression, many of which overexpressed the maternal allele. …

Mathematical Properties That Influence Least Significant Change Of Body Composition And Bone Mineral Density Measured By Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry, Nadia Marie Ghassan Najm

All Theses

Introduction: Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans are the gold standard method for measuring bone mineral density (BMD) calculations for the assessment and measurement of bone health. More recently, DXA scans have become the common method for body composition assessments among clinicians and researchers alike, particularly for its ability to separate soft tissue into and lean mass. This study was designed to calculate the percent coefficient variation (%CV) to determine the least significant change (LSC), or the variability considered significant when measuring BMD, fat mass, and lean mass with a DXA scan. Methods: Thirty-six female and 6 male, aged 50.07 …

Spatial Proximity As A Determinant Of Cognitive Control Context, Nathaniel T. Diede Aug 2015

Spatial Proximity As A Determinant Of Cognitive Control Context, Nathaniel T. Diede

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

The speed and flexibility of cognitive control is exemplified by the context-specific proportion congruency (CSPC) effect. Two locations on a computer screen may be biased to present either mostly congruent (MC) stimuli or mostly incongruent (MI) stimuli, necessitating rapid shifts of cognitive control in order to maximize speed and accuracy of responding. The episodic retrieval account has posited that the speed and flexibility of control can be explained by attentional settings being bound with contextual cues (e.g. the location at which a stimulus appears) into an episodic representation—allowing for settings to be retrieved automatically. However, what determines which setting is …

Distinct Physiological Roles For The Two Isoforms Of The Er Chaperone Grp170 In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Yuanyuan Li

Biology Theses

GRP170 is a large molecular chaperone found in the ER of all eukaryotes. The nematode Caenorhabditis elegans has two loci encoding GRP170: T24H7.2 (grp170a) and T14G8.3 (grp170b). The phenotypes of nematodes genetically deficient for either grp170a or grp170b were compared to a standard laboratory strain with functional grp170 loci. Worms that were deficient for grp170a developed 32% slower than the control strain. The loss of grp170a had a significant but modest reduction on the life span compared to the control strain. Worms deficient for grp170a also displayed significantly increased embryonic lethality and resulted in 6.9% arrested embryos. The loss of …

Differential Regulation Of The Two Grp170 Paralogues Of Caenorhabditis Elegans, Antonio L. Rockwell

Biology Theses

Abstract of a Thesis

Differential Regulation of the Two grp170 Paralogues of Caenorhabditis elegans

Caenorhabditis elegans has two loci encoding the large eukaryotic molecular chaperone Grp170, grp170a (T24H7.2) and grp170b (T14G8.3). To investigate expression of the two C. elegans grp170 loci during ER stress, the Unfolded Protein Response (UPR) was induced with the glycosylation inhibitor tunicamycin. Levels of grp170a mRNA did not significantly change in response to tunicamycin treatment while the levels of grp170b mRNA increased 6-fold. ER stress induction of grp170b was unaffected in worms defective for the ATF6 and PERK-1 UPR signal transduction pathways. However, worms defective …

Rust Diseases On Switchgrass (Panicum Virgatum), Ying Ma

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) is a perennial C4 grass native to the central prairies of North America. Recent development of switchgrass as a sustainable biofuel feedstock has raised interest in diseases that could impact switchgrass, especially when grown under monoculture conditions. Among the known diseases of switchgrass, rust diseases are the most widespread and could potentially impact yield and biomass quality of new switchgrass cultivars. Two species of rust fungi, Uromyces graminicola and Puccinia emaculata, are known to infect switchgrass, with P. emaculata being the primary or sole rust pathogen on switchgrass in southern US states. The …

Inertial Particle Dynamics In Simple Vortex Flow Configurations, Senbagaraman Sudarsanam Aug 2015

Inertial Particle Dynamics In Simple Vortex Flow Configurations, Senbagaraman Sudarsanam

All Theses

Dynamics of inertial particles differ significantly from that of the underlying fluid flow. This difference in the dynamics of Inertial particles from that of fluid tracers can be exploited to segregate particles by size. While external forces can be used to manipulate the dynamics of such particles, using hydrodynamic forces which are always present in the flows of interest to manipulate inertial particle dynamics offers several advantages. Vorticity is one such phenomenon that is frequently encountered in natural and industrial flows. Thus, the dynamics of inertial particles have been studied in the presence of simple vortex flow configurations in this …

Influence Of Low Shear And Cyclic Strain On Hyperglycemic Rat Aortic Smooth Muscle Cells: An In Vitro Dynamic Disease Model, Varun Chawla Aug 2015

Influence Of Low Shear And Cyclic Strain On Hyperglycemic Rat Aortic Smooth Muscle Cells: An In Vitro Dynamic Disease Model, Varun Chawla

All Theses

Vascular complications are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality amongst diabetic patients which represent a major proportion of patients undergoing coronary artery revascularization. Major advances in drug eluting stent technologies have reduced the overall rates of restenosis in general however diabetic patients still remain at a high risk thus requiring target lesion revascularization more commonly as compared to non-diabetic cohort. Phenotypic modulation demonstrated by smooth muscle cells is essential for normal wound healing response however is also contributive to initiation and development of various vascular complications including neointimal hyperplasia which ultimately leads to the lumen re-narrowing or restenosis. Hyperglycemia …

Analysis And An Application Of Rf Interferometer, Yongzhi Shao Aug 2015

Analysis And An Application Of Rf Interferometer, Yongzhi Shao

All Theses

The thesis investigates additive RF interferometer sensing technique, which is highly sensitive compared to other RF sensing methods. First, mathematical descriptions are given to illustrate how the RF interferometer works. Then an analysis of single particle passing over a coplanar waveguide in carrier liquid is presented, which poses as a difficulty to simulation software. The analysis is combined with interferometer mathematical equations and validated by a particle measurement in an interferometer. The interferometer sensitivity is enhanced by incorporating filters as sensing devices and functionally expanded by using the reflection coefficients. In the end, an application of gas measurement with the …

Sensitivity And Precision Analysis Of The Graph Complexity Connectivity Method, Sudarshan Sridhar Aug 2015

Sensitivity And Precision Analysis Of The Graph Complexity Connectivity Method, Sudarshan Sridhar

All Theses

In the Graph Complexity Connectivity Method (GCCM), twenty nine complexity metrics applied against engineering design graphs are used to create surrogate prediction models of engineering design representations (assembly models and function structures) for given product performance values (assembly time and market value). The performance of these prediction models has been previously assessed solely based on accuracy. In this thesis, the predictive precision of the surrogate models is evaluated in order to assess the GCCM's ability to generate consistent results under the same conditions. The Assembly Model - Assembly Time (AM-AT) prediction model performed the best in terms of both accuracy …

Understanding Molecular Interactions Between Proteins And Carbon Nanomaterials, Siva Dasetty Aug 2015

Understanding Molecular Interactions Between Proteins And Carbon Nanomaterials, Siva Dasetty

All Theses

Over the past few years there has been a rise in the number of nanomaterials engineered for a wide array of applications because of their unique properties. This rise in the development of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) and its growing usage has also raised questions about its potential impact on the biological environment. Recent experimental studies suggest that these ENMs could be toxic due to the formation of a protein corona. Therefore, understanding the formation of a protein corona would provide some insights into the toxic behavior of ENMs. This requires understanding the interactions between proteins and ENMs. We employ molecular …

Evidence For The Multiple Hits Genetic Theory For Inherited Language Impairment: A Case Study, Tracy M. Centanni, Jordan R. Green, Jenya Iuzzini-Seigel, Christopher W, Bartlett, Tiffany P. Hogan Aug 2015

Evidence For The Multiple Hits Genetic Theory For Inherited Language Impairment: A Case Study, Tracy M. Centanni, Jordan R. Green, Jenya Iuzzini-Seigel, Christopher W, Bartlett, Tiffany P. Hogan

Speech Pathology and Audiology Faculty Research and Publications

Communication disorders have complex genetic origins, with constellations of relevant gene markers that vary across individuals. Some genetic variants are present in healthy individuals as well as those affected by developmental disorders. Growing evidence suggests that some variants may increase susceptibility to these disorders in the presence of other pathogenic gene mutations. In the current study, we describe eight children with specific language impairment and four of these children had a copy number variant in one of these potential susceptibility regions on chromosome 15. Three of these four children also had variants in other genes previously associated with language impairment. …

Participant Perceptions Of Range Rider Programs Used To Mitigate Wolf-Livestock Conflicts In The Western United States, Molly Parks Aug 2015

Participant Perceptions Of Range Rider Programs Used To Mitigate Wolf-Livestock Conflicts In The Western United States, Molly Parks

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Range Rider Programs (RRPs) are one example of a proactive non-lethal tool that has been implemented in western United States to mitigate gray wolf (Canis lupus) and livestock conflicts. Because RRPs are an emerging non-lethal tool that little is known about, I selected a qualitative research approach to examine participant perceptions to further contemporary understanding of how these efforts are implemented and potential benefits. I surveyed 51 participants from 17 Range Rider Programs (RRPs) in Montana, Washington, and Oregon to determine participant perceptions regarding effectiveness of RRPs as a non-lethal approach to mitigate wolf-conflicts.

I developed a RRPs typology based …

To Belong As Citizens: Race And Marriage In Utah, 1880-1920, Scott D. Marianno Aug 2015

To Belong As Citizens: Race And Marriage In Utah, 1880-1920, Scott D. Marianno

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In the decades leading up to the twentieth century, social reformers and politicians, alarmed by Mormon political control (and polygamy) in Utah Territory, challenged Mormon whiteness and their competency for American citizenship. In re-examining Mormonism’s transition period, this study reveals how Mormon conformity to an encroaching American culture increased the movement’s exposure to discursive arguments on race-mixing, marriage, and eugenics that helped legitimize Mormon citizenship claims. Focusing on the themes of race, marriage, and citizenship, this thesis examines Mormonism’s racial transformation from not white to white as they assimilated and reified the racial ideology promoted by their Progressive-era contemporaries and …

Evaluating Accuracy And Bias In Genetic Monitoring Under Scenarios Of Population Decline, Susan K. Munster Aug 2015

Evaluating Accuracy And Bias In Genetic Monitoring Under Scenarios Of Population Decline, Susan K. Munster

Masters Theses

Accurate and unbiased estimates of current effective population size are of primary importance in making informed decisions for conservation purposes. One species of concern, the eastern red bat (Lasiurus borealis), is experiencing ongoing population losses due to wind turbine collisions. The proportion of the population being affected is currently unknown, although recent estimates of total fatalities at wind turbines over the time from 2000-2011 are in the hundreds of thousands for this species alone. The roosting habits of eastern red bats make it difficult to monitor their census population size (Nc); thus, genetic estimates of effective population size (Ne) may …

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

The World Health Organization has established recommendations for blood pressure measurement devices for use in low-resource venues, setting the triple A expectations of Accuracy, Affordability, and Availability. Because of issues related to training and assessment of proficiency, the pendulum has swung away from manual blood pressure devices and auscultatory techniques towards automatic oscillometric devices. As a result of power challenges in the developing world, there has also been a push towards semiautomatic devices that are not dependent on external power sources or batteries. Beyond solar solutions, disruptive technology related to solid-state vibrational energy harvesting may be the next iterative solution …

Ellen G. White's Understanding Of Indwelling Of The Holy Spirit: A Chronological Study, Cory Wetterlin Aug 2015

Ellen G. White's Understanding Of Indwelling Of The Holy Spirit: A Chronological Study, Cory Wetterlin

Andrews University Seminary Student Journal

Throughout history there have been two major understandings of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. The first is the indwelling of the transcendent timeless God within the timeless soul of a body/soul, dualistic anthropology. The second is an allinclusive view in which either everything is God, pantheism, or everything is within God, panentheism. Adventism has traditionally rejected both of these understandings. Adventism teaches a monistic anthropology, denying the indwelling of the soul and a panentheistic point of view. How then is Adventism able to define the indwelling of the Holy Spirit? In order to begin to answer this question it …
