Health Problems And Risk Factors Associated With Long Haul Transport Of Horses In Australia, Barbara Padalino, Evelyn Hall, Sharanne Raidal, Pietro Celi, Andrew Knight, Peter Knight, Leo Jeffcott, Gary Muscatello

Transport of Farm Animals Collection

Equine transportation is associated with a variety of serious health disorders causing economic losses. However; statistics on horse transport are limited and epidemiological data on transport related diseases are available only for horses transported to abattoirs for slaughter. This study analysed reports of transport related health problems identified by drivers and horse owners for 180 journeys of an Australian horse transport company transporting horses between Perth and Sydney (~4000 km) in 2013–2015. Records showed that 97.2% (1604/1650) of the horses arrived at their destination with no clinical signs of disease or injury. Based on the veterinary reports of the affected …

The hypothesis in the current study is that the simultaneous direct in vivo testing of thousands to millions of systematically arranged mixture-based libraries will facilitate the identification of enhanced individual compounds. Individual compounds identified from such libraries may have increased specificity and decreased side effects early in the discovery phase. Testing began by screening ten diverse scaffolds as single mixtures (ranging from 17 340 to 4 879 681 compounds) for analgesia directly in the mouse tail withdrawal model. The “all X” mixture representing the library TPI-1954 was found to produce significant antinociception and lacked respiratory depression and hyperlocomotor effects using …

Progtar: A Database Of Prognostically Inversely Correlated Mirnas And Genes (Pics) In Multiple Cancers, Chirayu Pankaj Goswami

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Posters

ABSTRACT

PROGTar is a database of Prognostically Inversely Correlated miRNA-mRNA pairs (PIC’s) in 23 cancer types. Partner miRNA and mRNA in a PIC show inverse correlation of expression and opposite hazards. We analyzed miRNA and mRNA expression data downloaded from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) in a 3 step approach to identify PICs in different cancer types. In first step we performed correlation analysis between miRNAs and mRNAs for each cancer type. This was followed by performing hazard analysis separately for miRNAs and mRNAs using expression data and survival related clinical variables. In the third step we merged the correlation …

A Comparison Of Infaunal Community Structure Between Pre- And Post Construction Sampling Of Artificial Fdot Rock- Pile Reefs In Broward County, Florida, Joan Lorraine Guerra Dec 2015

A Comparison Of Infaunal Community Structure Between Pre- And Post Construction Sampling Of Artificial Fdot Rock- Pile Reefs In Broward County, Florida, Joan Lorraine Guerra

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Artificial reefs (ARs) are generally created with the intention of increasing local fish populations, biodiversity and corresponding habitat productivity, most often in support of commercial and recreational uses (e.g., diving and fishing). Numerous studies have investigated the communities that develop on artificial reefs. By contrast, far less research has focused on the surrounding infaunal communities, which represent critical trophic resources for many species that populate both natural and artificial reefs, and which may be affected both by AR deployment and the organisms that subsequently recruit to them. This study compared infaunal organism abundances at four sites between the inner and …

Augmenting The Immersed Boundary Method With Radial Basis Functions (Rbfs) For The Modeling Of Platelets In Hemodynamic Flows, Varun Shankar, Grady B. Wright, Robert M. Kirby, Aaron L. Fogelson

Mathematics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We present a new computational method by extending the Immersed Boundary (IB) method with a geometric model based on parametric Radial Basis Function (RBF) interpolation of the Lagrangian structures. Our specific motivation is the modeling of platelets in hemodynamic flows, though we anticipate that our method will be useful in other applications involving surface elasticity. The efficacy of our new RBF-IB method is shown through a series of numerical experiments. Specifically, we test the convergence of our method and compare our method with the traditional IB method in terms of computational cost, maximum stable time-step size and volume loss. We …

US citizen PhDs progressed to their career approximately one mean year faster than foreign PhDs. For TTC, PhDs who held postdocs progressed to their careers in 14 and 15 years for females and males respectively …

Effectiveness Of Agricultural Drainage Systems On Contaminant Mitigation: The Influence Of Landscape Properties, Oluwayinka Omolara Iseyemi Dec 2015

Effectiveness Of Agricultural Drainage Systems On Contaminant Mitigation: The Influence Of Landscape Properties, Oluwayinka Omolara Iseyemi

Student Theses and Dissertations

Agricultural drainage systems are considered innovative best management practices (BMP) capable of many ecological functions, including flood control, edge of field nutrient filtration, as well as habitat for wildlife. Being an integral part of the production landscape and needing no additional cost for establishment, their use has been promoted in agriculture as cost effective BMPs that can be voluntarily adopted by farmers. The current study evaluated the effectiveness of drainage ditches (as influenced by their landscape properties) in mitigating edge-of-field nutrient runoff and measured additional ecosystem services rendered by these systems. Two experimental drainage types [conventional and controlled (with weirs) …

Background

Patterns of genetic and genomic variance are informative in inferring population history for human, model species and endangered populations.

Results

Here the genome sequence of wild-born African cheetahs reveals extreme genomic depletion in SNV incidence, SNV density, SNVs of coding genes, MHC class I and II genes, and mitochondrial DNA SNVs. Cheetah genomes are on average 95 % homozygous compared to the genomes of the outbred domestic cat (24.08 % homozygous), Virunga Mountain Gorilla (78.12 %), inbred Abyssinian cat (62.63 %), Tasmanian devil, domestic dog and other mammalian species. Demographic estimators impute two ancestral population bottlenecks: one >100,000 years …

Reverse transcriptase-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) is a reliable technique for quantifying gene expression across various biological processes, of which requires a set of suited reference genes to normalize the expression data. Coleomegilla maculata (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), is one of the most extensively used biological control agents in the field to manage arthropod pest species. In this study, expression profiles of 16 housekeeping genes selected from C. maculata were cloned and investigated. The performance of these candidates as endogenous controls under specific experimental conditions was evaluated by dedicated algorithms, including geNorm, Normfinder, BestKeeper, and ΔCt method. In addition, …

Floral nectar contains secondary compounds with antimicrobial properties that can affect not only plant-pollinator interactions, but also interactions between pollinators and their parasites. Although recent work has shown that consumption of plant secondary compounds can reduce pollinator parasite loads, little is known about the effects of dosage or compound combinations. We used the generalist pollinator Bombus impatiens and its obligate gut parasite Crithidia bombi to study the effects of nectar chemistry on host-parasite interactions. In two experiments we tested (1) whether the secondary compounds thymol and nicotine act synergistically to reduce parasitism, and (2) whether dietary thymol concentration affects parasite …

Super-Killers: Environmental Isolates That Antagonize Pathogenic Vibrio, Abigail Joy Dec 2015

Super-Killers: Environmental Isolates That Antagonize Pathogenic Vibrio, Abigail Joy

Honors Projects

Vibrio are members of a bacterial group that thrive in diverse aquatic environments including on the surface of aquatic animals, free-living in the water column, and in association with suspended particles. The total Vibrio counts in the coastal ocean ranges from 103-105 per milliliter of water depending on seasons and water temperature. Although many different species of Vibrio persist in the water column, pathogenic strains, such as Vibrio cholerae and Vibrio parahaemolyticus are absent or rare in marine environments. We hypothesize that the low abundance of these pathogenic species may be due to interspecific competition among environmental …

Characterization Of The Paracoccidioides Hypoxia Response Reveals New Insights Into Pathogenesis Mechanisms Of This Important Human Pathogenic Fungus, Patrícia De Sousa Lima, Dawoon Chung, Alexandre Melo Bailão, Robert A. Cramer, Célia Maria De Almeida Soares

Dartmouth Scholarship

Background: Hypoxic microenvironments are generated during fungal infection. It has been described that to survive in the human host, fungi must also tolerate and overcome in vivo microenvironmental stress conditions including low oxygen tension; however nothing is known how Paracoccidioides species respond to hypoxia. The genus Paracoccidioides comprises human thermal dimorphic fungi and are causative agents of paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM), an important mycosis in Latin America.

Stable isotope labeling is central to NMR studies of nucleic acids. Development of methods that incorporate labels at specific atomic positions within each nucleotide promises to expand the size range of RNAs that can be studied by NMR. Using recombinantly expressed enzymes and chemically synthesized ribose and nucleobase, we have developed an inexpensive, rapid chemo-enzymatic method to label ATP and GTP site specifically and in high yields of up to 90%.We incorporated these nucleotides into RNAs with sizes ranging from 27 to 59 nucleotides using in vitro transcription: A-Site (27 nt), the iron responsive elements (29 nt), a fluoride riboswitch …

Epigenetic Regulation Of Neurogenesis By Citron Kinase, Matthew Girgenti Dec 2015

Epigenetic Regulation Of Neurogenesis By Citron Kinase, Matthew Girgenti

Doctoral Dissertations

Patterns of neural progenitor division are controlled by a combination of asymmetries in cell division, extracellular signals, and changes in gene expression programs. In a screen for proteins that complex with citron kinase (CitK), a protein essential to cell division in developing brain, I identified the histone methyltransferase- euchromatic histone-lysine N-methyltransferse 2 (G9a). CitK is present in the nucleus and binds to positions in the genome clustered around transcription start sites of genes involved in neuronal development and differentiation. CitK and G9a co-occupy these genomic positions in S/G2-phase of the cell cycle in rat neural progenitors, and CitK functions with …

Efficient Methods For Mining Association Rules From Uncertain Data, Manal Hamed Alharbi Dec 2015

Efficient Methods For Mining Association Rules From Uncertain Data, Manal Hamed Alharbi

Doctoral Dissertations

Association rules mining is a common data mining problem that explores the relationships among items based on their occurrences in transactions. Traditional approaches to mine frequent patterns may not be applicable for several real life applications. There are many domains such as social networks, sensor networks, protein-protein interaction analysis, and inaccurate surveys where the data are uncertain. As opposed to deterministic or certain data where the occurrences of items in transactions are definite, in an uncertain database, the occurrence of an item in a transaction is characterized as a discrete random variable and thus represented by a probability distribution. In …

Contemporary And Historic Effects Of Fishing On Largemouth Bass Populations, Using Unexploited Populations For Reference, Jan-Michael Hessenauer

Doctoral Dissertations

Recreational fisheries represent complex coupled human and natural systems subject to intricate feedback loops. These feedback loops can affect anglers, fish populations, and the ecosystem. I studied the effects of recreational angling on Largemouth Bass Micropterus salmoides populations, using unexploited populations for references. Exploited populations contained significantly more individuals with low metabolic rates than unexploited populations, consistent with predictions of fisheries induced evolution. Naïve individuals from unexploited and exploited populations had equal initial angling vulnerability in standardized trials. However, individuals from exploited populations learned lure avoidance faster than unexploited individuals. The cumulative number of catch events best predicted catch rates, …
