Identity, Law, And The Right To A Dream?, Robert Leckey Oct 2015

Identity, Law, And The Right To A Dream?, Robert Leckey

Dalhousie Law Journal

This paper engages critically with the new orthodoxy holding that individuals have a "right" to know their genetic origins and that such knowledge is crucial to realizing their identities. It examines two case studies: the Pratten litigation under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms regarding anonymous donor conception and scholarship approving a reform to Quebec's adoption law. It addresses the supposed "identity gap" between those who are adopted or donor-conceived and those who are neither Arguments for law reform exaggerate that gap, opposing the incomplete, insecure identity of the adopted or donorconceived to the ostensibly complete, secure identity of …

Protecting Identity By Ignoring It? A Critical Look At The French And Rwandan Paradoxes, Frédéric Mégret Oct 2015

Protecting Identity By Ignoring It? A Critical Look At The French And Rwandan Paradoxes, Frédéric Mégret

Dalhousie Law Journal

This article seeks to critically examine political and legal practices of "racial blindness" by comparing two countries that have most enthusiastically embraced it as an official policy and even ideology: France and Rwanda. By highlighting the differences but also the significant commonalities between the two, it seeks to dynamically emphasize their explicit and implicit construction of race and ethnicity The case for racial blindness is first presented in the terms in which it is largely understood in those countries, and taken seriously as an effort to deal with their unique legacies and political circumstances, notably as part of a desire …

Impact Of Secondary Reactive Species On The Apparent Decoupling Of Poly(Ethylene Glycol) Diacrylate Hydrogel Average Mesh Size And Modulus, Dany J. Munoz Pinto, S. Samavedi, B. Grigoryan, M. S. Hahn Oct 2015

Impact Of Secondary Reactive Species On The Apparent Decoupling Of Poly(Ethylene Glycol) Diacrylate Hydrogel Average Mesh Size And Modulus, Dany J. Munoz Pinto, S. Samavedi, B. Grigoryan, M. S. Hahn

Engineering Faculty Research

Poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) hydrogels are widely used in biotechnology due to their in situ crosslinking capacity and tunable physical properties. However, as with all single component hydrogels, the modulus of PEGDA networks cannot be tailored independently of mesh size. This interdependence places significant limitations on their use for defined, 3D cell-microenvironment studies and for certain controlled release applications. The incorporation of secondary reactive species (SRS) into PEGDA hydrogels has previously been shown to allow the identification of up to 6 PEGDA hydrogel formulations for which distinct moduli can be obtained at consistent average mesh size (or vice versa). However, …

Agonizing Identity In Mental Health Law And Policy (Part I), Sheila Wildeman Oct 2015

Agonizing Identity In Mental Health Law And Policy (Part I), Sheila Wildeman

Dalhousie Law Journal

In this two-part paper, the author explores the significance of identity in mental health law and policy In this as in other socio-legal domains, identity functions to consolidate dissent as well as to effect social control. The author asks: where do legal experts stand in relation to the identity categories that run so deep in this area of law and policy? More broadly, she asks: is "mental health" working on us on the mental health disabled, legal scholars, all of us-in ways that are impairing our capacity for social justice? In the first part of the paper, the author considers …

Before And Beyond Anticipatory Intelligence: Assessing The Potential For Crowdsourcing And Intelligence Studies, Alexander Halman

Journal of Strategic Security

Crowdsourcing is a new tool for businesses, academics, and now intelligence analysts. Enabled by recent technology, crowdsourcing allows researchers to harness the wisdom of crowds and provide recommendations and insight into complex problems. This paper examines the potential benefits and limitations of crowdsourcing for intelligence analysis and the intelligence community beyond its primary use: anticipatory intelligence. The author constructs a model and compares it to existing crowdsourcing theories in business, information science, and public policy. Finally, he offers advice for intelligence analysis and public policy.

An Insight Into The Functional Role Of Thioredoxin Reductase, A Selenoprotein, In Maintaining Normal Native Microbiota In The Gulf Coast Tick (Ambylomma Maculatum), Khemraj Budachetri, Shahid Karim Oct 2015

An Insight Into The Functional Role Of Thioredoxin Reductase, A Selenoprotein, In Maintaining Normal Native Microbiota In The Gulf Coast Tick (Ambylomma Maculatum), Khemraj Budachetri, Shahid Karim

Faculty Publications

Tick selenoproteins have been associated with antioxidant activity in ticks. Thioredoxin reductase (TrxR), also a selenoprotein, belongs to the pyridine nucleotide‐disulphide oxidoreductase family of proteins and is an important antioxidant. Molecular interactions between native microbiota and tick hosts have barely been investigated to date. In this study, we determined the functional role of TrxR in tick feeding and in maintenance of the native microbial community. TrxR transcript levels remained high and microbial load was reduced throughout tick attachment to the vertebrate host. RNA interference (RNAi) showed that depletion of TrxR activity did not interfere with tick haematophagy or phenotype but …

Reconstruction Of Two-Dimensional Molecular Structure With Laser-Induced Electron Diffraction From Laser-Aligned Polyatomic Molecules, Chao Yu, Hui Wei, Xu Wang, Anh-Thu Le, Ruifeng Lu, C. D. Lin

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Imaging the transient process of molecules has been a basic way to investigate photochemical reactions and dynamics. Based on laser-induced electron diffraction and partial one-dimensional molecular alignment, here we provide two effective methods for reconstructing two-dimensional structure of polyatomic molecules. We demonstrate that electron diffraction images in both scattering angles and broadband energy can be utilized to retrieve complementary structure information, including positions of light atoms. With picometre spatial resolution and the inherent femtosecond temporal resolution of lasers, laser-induced electron diffraction method offers significant opportunities for probing atomic motion in a large molecule in a typical pump-probe measurement.

Dipl 6277 Na Global Health, Bioterrorism, And International Security, Yanzhong Huang Phd

Diplomacy Syllabi

In today’s world, international trade and travel threaten epidemics by transporting and spreading infectious disease globally at jet speed. The growing risk of exposure to infectious disease, coupled with the threat of bioterrorism, creates a situation in which health and security are interacting with greater frequency and intensity. This development parallels efforts to redefine the concept of security to encompass new global challenges. To what extent does health fit this new security agenda? What are the major linkages between health and security? Should other global health challenges (e.g., non-communicable diseases) be framed as problems that demand response from the national …
