Evolution

Genetic drift can be defined as a random fluctuation in gene frequency. More specifically, it tells us that different alleles may increase or decrease in a population in proportion to one another over time, just by chance, rather than due to any fitness advantage.

An Irrigation Canal As A Lotic Mesocosm: Examining The Relationship Between Macroinvertebrate Benthos And Drift, Peter Koetsier, Luana M. M. Mccauley Oct 2015

An Irrigation Canal As A Lotic Mesocosm: Examining The Relationship Between Macroinvertebrate Benthos And Drift, Peter Koetsier, Luana M. M. Mccauley

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

We explored the notion that small canals could be good experimental proxies of streams by documenting physiochemical parameters and macroinvertebrate community development in an aridland irrigation canal. Further, we tested the production-compensation hypothesis between benthic invertebrates and invertebrates in the water column (drift). If the hypothesis held, invertebrates in the drift would be low until the benthic carrying capacity was reached; then organisms in the drift would increase as individuals avoided overcrowded conditions in the substrate. In a small, naturalized freshwater canal, we sampled macroinvertebrates in the substrate and those in the drift once every 2 weeks over 170 days …

Motile Cryptofaunal Invertebrate Assemblages In Catalina Island's Rhodolith Beds In Relation To Physical Structure And Live Rhodoliths, Kristin Meagher Robinson Oct 2015

Motile Cryptofaunal Invertebrate Assemblages In Catalina Island's Rhodolith Beds In Relation To Physical Structure And Live Rhodoliths, Kristin Meagher Robinson

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Rhodoliths (Corallinaceae, Rhodophyta) are unattached, branching, calcareous red algae that are important foundation species in near shore marine systems. Aggregations, or beds, produce habitat that is a mixture of hard substrate and soft sediment supporting diverse assemblages of both crypto- and macrofauna. At Catalina Island, CA (33º44’55”N, 118º50’22”W), beds of relatively small rhodoliths were recently documented within several bays and coves. To better understand the associated community, this study describes the cryptofaunal invertebrate assemblages associated with live rhodolith (LR), dead rhodolith (DR) and sand (S) habitats within three sites (Cherry Cove, Isthmus Harbor, Avalon Harbor). Motile invertebrates (> 0.5 mm) …

The Role Of Snow Cover Affecting Boreal-Arctic Soil Freeze–Thaw And Carbon Dynamics, Y. Yi, John S. Kimball, Michael A. Rawlins, Mahta Moghaddam, E. S. Euskirchen Oct 2015

The Role Of Snow Cover Affecting Boreal-Arctic Soil Freeze–Thaw And Carbon Dynamics, Y. Yi, John S. Kimball, Michael A. Rawlins, Mahta Moghaddam, E. S. Euskirchen

Numerical Terradynamic Simulation Group Publications

Northern Hemisphere permafrost affected land areas contain about twice as much carbon as the global atmosphere. This vast carbon pool is vulnerable to accelerated losses through mobilization and decomposition under projected global warming. Satellite data records spanning the past 3 decades indicate widespread reductions (~ 0.8–1.3 days decade−1) in the mean annual snow cover extent and frozen-season duration across the pan-Arctic domain, coincident with regional climate warming trends. How the soil carbon pool responds to these changes will have a large impact on regional and global climate. Here, we developed a coupled terrestrial carbon and hydrology model framework …

Forest Diversity And Disturbance: Changing Influences And The Future Of Virginia’S Forests, Christine J. Small, James L. Chamberlain Oct 2015

Forest Diversity And Disturbance: Changing Influences And The Future Of Virginia’S Forests, Christine J. Small, James L. Chamberlain

Virginia Journal of Science

The Virginia landscape supports a remarkable diversity of forests, from maritime dune woodlands, swamp forests, and pine savannas of the Atlantic Coastal Plain, to post-agricultural pine-hardwood forests of the Piedmont, to mixed oak, mesophytic, northern hardwood, and high elevation spruce-fir forests across three mountain provinces in western parts of the state. Virginia’s forests also have been profoundly shaped by disturbance. Chestnut blight, hemlock woolly adelgid, emerald ash borer, and other pests have caused declines or functional extirpation of foundation species. Invasive plants like multiflora rose, Oriental bittersweet, and Japanese stiltgrass threaten both disturbed and intact forests. Oaks and other fire-dependent …

Parasite Manipulation Of The Invariant Chain And The Peptide Editor H2-Dm Affects Major Histocompatibility Complex Class Ii Antigen Presentation During Toxoplasma Gondii Infection, Louis-Philippe Leroux, Manami Nishi, Sandy El-Hage, Barbara A. Fox, David I Bzik, Florence Dzierszinsk Oct 2015

Parasite Manipulation Of The Invariant Chain And The Peptide Editor H2-Dm Affects Major Histocompatibility Complex Class Ii Antigen Presentation During Toxoplasma Gondii Infection, Louis-Philippe Leroux, Manami Nishi, Sandy El-Hage, Barbara A. Fox, David I Bzik, Florence Dzierszinsk

Dartmouth Scholarship

Toxoplasma gondii is an obligate intracellular protozoan parasite. This apicomplexan is the causative agent of toxoplasmosis, a leading cause of central nervous system disease in AIDS. It has long been known that T. gondii interferes with major histocompatibility complex class II (MHC-II) antigen presentation to attenuate CD4(+) T cell responses and establish persisting infections. Transcriptional downregulation of MHC-II genes by T. gondii was previously established, but the precise mechanisms inhibiting MHC-II function are currently unknown. Here, we show that, in addition to transcriptional regulation of MHC-II, the parasite modulates the expression of key components of the MHC-II antigen presentation pathway, …

Impact Of Environmental Health On Teen Outcomes In Rural Kentucky, Lesley Davidson, Alissa Briggs, Hatim A. Omar Oct 2015

Impact Of Environmental Health On Teen Outcomes In Rural Kentucky, Lesley Davidson, Alissa Briggs, Hatim A. Omar

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

Understanding the impact of family dynamics on health has become an environmental health priority in the field of adolescent medicine. Family dynamics are much more complex than they were 60 years ago and so are behavioral outcomes. This transformation in the American family has led towards a large array of adolescent living situations. Rural Kentucky is a prime example of an area with a high rate of non-traditional family composition. Poor family dynamics may be associated with increased rates of high risk behaviors among teenagers. Among these behaviors are drug use, sexual activity, and depression. In this study, we evaluated …

Student Teacher Perceptions Regarding Career Readiness And The Effectiveness Of A Teacher Preparation Program, Josue Dantas Oct 2015

Student Teacher Perceptions Regarding Career Readiness And The Effectiveness Of A Teacher Preparation Program, Josue Dantas

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

This study investigated student teachers perceptions regarding career readiness and the effectiveness of a teacher preparation program at Lynn University. In 201 1, research conducted by McCulloch, Burris, and Ulmer emphasized that there are more than 1,400 colleges and universities in the United States preparing students to enter the teaching profession. Teacher preparation programs in the United States continue to graduate many individuals who do not go into a teaching career long-term. This study was designed to provide insight into whether or not student teacher perceptions might be used as a different perspective in terms of teacher preparation program evaluation. …

An Initial Meta-Analysis Of Acceptance And Commitment Therapy For Treating Substance Use Disorders, Eric B. Lee, Woolee An, Michael E. Levin, Michael P. Twohig Oct 2015

An Initial Meta-Analysis Of Acceptance And Commitment Therapy For Treating Substance Use Disorders, Eric B. Lee, Woolee An, Michael E. Levin, Michael P. Twohig

Psychology Faculty Publications

Background: In the past decade, multiple studies have examined the effectiveness ofAcceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for substance use disorders relative to other active treatments. The current meta-analysis examined the aggregate effect size when comparing ACT to other treatments (e.g., CBT, pharmacotherapy, 12-step,treatment as usual) specifically on substance use outcomes. Method: A total of 10 randomized controlled trials were identified through systematic searches. Results: A significant small to medium effect size was found favoring ACT relative to active treatment comparisons following treatment. Effect sizes were comparable across studies for smoking cessation (k = 5) and for other drug use disorders …

Temporal Variability And Cooperative Breeding: Testing The Bet-Hedging Hypothesis In The Acorn Woodpecker, Walter D. Koenig, Eric L. Walters Oct 2015

Temporal Variability And Cooperative Breeding: Testing The Bet-Hedging Hypothesis In The Acorn Woodpecker, Walter D. Koenig, Eric L. Walters

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Cooperative breeding is generally considered an adaptation to ecological constraints on dispersal and independent breeding, usually due to limited breeding opportunities. Although benefits of cooperative breeding are typically thought of in terms of increased mean reproductive success, it has recently been proposed that this phenomenonmay be a bet-hedging strategy that reduces variance in reproductive success (fecundity variance) inpopulations living inhighly variable environments. We tested this hypothesis using long-term data on the polygynandrous acorn woodpecker (Melanerpes formicivorus). In general, fecundity variance decreased with increasing sociality, at least when controlling for annual variation in ecological conditions. Nonetheless, decreased fecundity variance …

Virginia Air Quality: Trends, Exposure, And Respiratory Health Impacts, James Blando, My Ngoc Nguyen, Manasi Sheth-Chandra, Muge Akpinar-Elci

Virginia Journal of Science

Air quality is an important determinant of public health and quality of life. A secondary data analysis was carried out to investigate trends and air quality in Virginia. The analysis included an evaluation of two major air pollution source categories, emission of criteria and hazardous air pollutants, ambient concentrations of criteria pollutants, ozone standard violations and associated meteorology, and hospital admissions for asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in Virginia. Comparisons were also made to national trends and statistics. Data was gathered from many open reputable on-line sources available through various state and federal agencies. Virginia routinely meets 5 of …
