Foraging Behavior Links Climate Variability And Reproduction In North Pacific Albatrosses, Lesley Thorne, Elliott Hazen, Steven Bograd, David Foley, Melinda Conners, Michelle Kappes, Hyemi Kim, Daniel Costa, Yann Tremblay, Scott A. Shaffer
Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences
Background: Climate-driven environmental change in the North Pacific has been well documented, with marked effects on the habitat and foraging behavior of marine predators. However, the mechanistic linkages connecting climate-driven changes in behavior to predator populations are not well understood. We evaluated the effects of climate-driven environmental variability on the reproductive success and foraging behavior of Laysan and Black-footed albatrosses breeding in the Northwest Hawaiian Islands during both brooding and incubating periods. We assessed foraging trip metrics and reproductive success using data collected from 2002–2012 and 1981–2012, respectively, relative to variability in the location of the Transition Zone Chlorophyll Front …

Big Data Proteogenomics And High Performance Computing: Challenges And Opportunities, Fahad Saeed
Big Data Proteogenomics And High Performance Computing: Challenges And Opportunities, Fahad Saeed
Parallel Computing and Data Science Lab Technical Reports
Proteogenomics is an emerging field of systems biology research at the intersection of proteomics and genomics. Two high-throughput technologies, Mass Spectrometry (MS) for proteomics and Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) machines for genomics are required to conduct proteogenomics studies. Independently both MS and NGS technologies are inflicted with data deluge which creates problems of storage, transfer, analysis and visualization. Integrating these big data sets (NGS+MS) for proteogenomics studies compounds all of the associated computational problems. Existing sequential algorithms for these proteogenomics datasets analysis are inadequate for big data and high performance computing (HPC) solutions are almost non-existent. The purpose of this …
Revisiting An Integrated Health Informatics And Technology Curriculum Model, Bernard T. Han, Tracy L. Johnson, Kenneth D. Bobo
Revisiting An Integrated Health Informatics And Technology Curriculum Model, Bernard T. Han, Tracy L. Johnson, Kenneth D. Bobo
Transactions of the International Conference on Health Information Technology Advancement
The shortage of health information technology workforce is quite significant in the health industry. The traditional education approach may not be effective enough to train college students to be an HIT workforce that requires both academic knowledge and extensive hands-on experiences in both healthcare and information technology. This paper presents an Integrated Health Informatics and Technology Curriculum Model to collapse the campus boundaries between regional Intermediate School Districts, Community Colleges, and a Four-Year health informatics and information management program to support expedited education with sufficient hands-on experiences in health informatics and technology. This model has been pilot tested by the …

“This Country Does Not Have My Back!”: Youth Experiences With A Parent Threatened By Deportation, Leila Rosa
“This Country Does Not Have My Back!”: Youth Experiences With A Parent Threatened By Deportation, Leila Rosa
Journal of Cape Verdean Studies
Using exploratory case study methodology and a critical theoretical perspective, this study examined the impact of parental deportation on three Cape Verdean youths, in one of the largest Cape Verdean immigrant communities in Southeast New England. A particularly focus is given to their schooling experiences following parental deportation as well as their understanding of the event of parental deportation. Participants expressed feeling isolated and disconnected in school and from extended family following their parents’ involvement with Immigration services. They questioned or denied their American identity despite being citizens by birth. They described fears and feelings of uncertainty about their future. …
Working With Locals To Restore Biodiversity To A Rubber Dominated Landscape, Francis Commercon
Working With Locals To Restore Biodiversity To A Rubber Dominated Landscape, Francis Commercon
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Xishuangbanna, in Yunnan,China, contains the country’s highest concentration of biodiversity. Since the 1980s,rubber plantations have replaced a significant portion of the prefecture’s lowland Seasonal Tropical Rainforest, leading to wildlife habitat loss and other environmental issues.Monoculture farming practices also leave farmers economically vulnerable to market fluctuations. To learn the best solutions for increasing ecosystem services and income stability in rubber-dominated areas, the World Agroforestry Center (ICRAF) project Green Rubber engages smallholders directly in establishing and maintaining scientifically rigorous intercropping experiments in their villages.
Using Man’e village and the Green Rubber project as a case study, I asked to what degree and …
Tracing The Human Healthcare Roots Of Antibiotic Resistance In India: Causes, Challenges, And Promising Solutions, Kelsey Matteson
Tracing The Human Healthcare Roots Of Antibiotic Resistance In India: Causes, Challenges, And Promising Solutions, Kelsey Matteson
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
The rapid development of biological defense mechanisms by bacteria, or antibiotic resistance, is a dangerously progressing public health concern worldwide. The spread of antibiotic resistant pathogens are not only a threat to the security of healthcare facilities and the stability of modern medicine across the globe, but this phenomenon also creates a particular burden on countries with a high prevalence of infectious disease such as India. This study attempts to explore India’s unique human healthcare causes of the emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance, comprehend the obstacles that have created roadblocks to change, and outline possible solutions to overcome these …
How Social Determinants Of Health, Health-Seeking Behaviors, And Treatment Adherence Influence And Interact With Endemic Levels Of Pulmonary Tb And Mdr-Tb In Urban Rajasthan, Michelle Kagei

Tuberculosis, the worlds most deadly infectious disease, remains as one of the major causes of morbidity and mortality in modern-day India. The country has the highest burden of both tuberculosis as well as multidrug-resistant tuberculosis, a more recently emerging menace. This study focuses on the social determinants of health pertaining to tuberculosis, identifying and discussing “at-risk” groups in the population of urban Rajasthan. Jaipur was chosen as the field study location because of the city’s extensive levels of healthcare institutions and facilities. In order to identify common patient demographics as well as issues regarding treatment adherence, medical records and interviews …
Narratives Towards Ending Stigma: Hiv-Related Stigma In The Netherlands From The Standpoint Of Those Who Experience It First-Hand, Anya Katz
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
While there is a decent amount of research that has been done regarding HIV related stigma in the Netherlands, little has been done qualitatively, working from the standpoint of individuals who have experienced that stigma first hand. This research uses qualitative methods, weaving the stories of individuals as well as participant observations to understand what people believe are the most essential methods in erasing HIV stigma. It also looks at what people see as the types of stigma and conflicts within HIV positive communities that are the most detrimental to the larger erasure of stigma. Through interviews and volunteer work …

Assessment Of Coral Health And Fish Diversity In The Fringing Reefs Of Porvenir Island And Korbisky Island, Guna Yala, Panama, Emily Waddell
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Coral reefs are the most diverse and productive ecosystems on Earth, serving as important habitats to millions of organisms; however, they are disappearing at alarming rates. The major influences causing their decline are the combined effects of global climate change and increased industrialization, urbanization, and agriculture. Previous studies have correlated high coral coverage with high fish diversity; therefore, as coral reefs disappear, so too does fish diversity. This study assesses the health of the fringe reefs of Porvenir Island and Korbisky Island in Guna Yala, Panama by recording the live coral, bleached coral, diseased coral, and algae cover of each …
An Avian Biological Gradient Across Tropical Dry Lowland Local Habitats At Playa Venao, Los Santos Province, Panama, Abigail Thomas
An Avian Biological Gradient Across Tropical Dry Lowland Local Habitats At Playa Venao, Los Santos Province, Panama, Abigail Thomas
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
There are a myriad of forest types within Panama, varying by elevation, precipitation and other abiotic factors, which hosts a wide variety of native and migratory species in uniquely-structured avian communities. Panama has been well assessed for presence and distribution of its 987 collective avian species (Angehr, 2014). However most studies in Panama have been broad in scope, overlooking the highly specified habitats that are uniquely structured to host a certain range of avifauna communities. The distinctions in community structure of avifauna along a coastal to inland gradient were assessed among three specialized habitats: the Central Pacific coast, partially deforested …

The Examination Of Enrichment Using Space And Food For African Elephants (Loxodonta Africana) At The San Diego Zoo Safari Park, Charlotte Hacker
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Concern for elephant welfare in zoological facilities has prompted a number of exhibit and management modifications, including those involving enrichment. Knowledge of how these changes impact measures of health and wellbeing, such as elephant movement and behavior, is crucial as the effects of multiple enrichment types and their interactions are largely understudied. The present study used observations and GPS unit collected data to determine the effects of space and food on the walking distance and behavior of thirteen African elephants, whose dominance structure was ascertained by the handlers at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park (SDZSP). This facility has two …

An Examination Of Workplace Factors Associated With Job Satisfaction Of Generation Y University Professional Staff, Martha Jane Sales
An Examination Of Workplace Factors Associated With Job Satisfaction Of Generation Y University Professional Staff, Martha Jane Sales
Dissertations
Generation Y staff identified two workplace factors as significant to job satisfaction: promotion and contingent rewards. The Generation Y participants also identified eight workplace factors—pay, promotion, fringe benefits, supervision, contingent rewards, operating procedures, nature of work, and communication—as significant to employee retention. One demographic element, length of time in a current position, was found significant to Generation Y job satisfaction. Although the primary research focus was Generation Y university professional staff, one particular non-Generation Y finding proved relevant to employee retention: nature of work was ranked as the primary factor associated University professional staff make valuable contributions essential to the …

Testing Usda Certified Organic And Non-Gmo Verified Project Labeled Foods For The Presence Of Genetic Modifications, Ryan Loren Phelps
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) are plants or animals that have been produced using genetic insertion or deletion via technology (also called genetic engineering or GE). Merged DNA from different species creates combinations of plant, animal, bacteria and/or virus genes that cannot occur in nature or in traditional crossbreeding.
Our goal was to determine the presence or absence of GMO markers in USDA Organic Certified and in Non-GMO Project food products. We investigated only corn or soy-based products that were purchased from many types of retailers. Our study was limited to products that contained a label for USDA organic certification and/or …

Mercury Emissions From Coal-Fired Powerplants, Divya Gade
Environmental Management & Risk Assessment (PH 560)
Mercury is a neurotoxic heavy metal that pose a risk to the public as well as the environmental health. It is a naturally occurring element that is released into the environment from the natural or anthropogenic emissions. Among the anthropogenic emissions, coal-fired powerplants account for approximately 50 percent of the emissions because of the lack of regulations for the emissions from these facilities. The other larger sources of mercury emissions such as municipal waste combustors and medical waste incinerators are subjected to the stringent regulations thereby minimizing their total contribution. Mercury is a natural component of coal and is released …

Diplomacy Syllabi
Global health issues, including infectious diseases, have affected world history more extensively than most of us can imagine. In today’s world, international trade and travel threaten transborder epidemics by transporting and spreading diseases globally at jet speed. The growing risk of exposure to infectious disease, coupled with the threat of bioterrorism, creates a situation in which health and security are interacting with greater frequency and intensity. This development parallels efforts to redefine the concept of security to encompass new global challenges. How did epidemics function as agents of historical change? What are the major linkages between health and security? Should …
