Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science Faculty Publications

Bud dormancy in grapevine is an adaptive strategy for the survival of drought, high and low temperatures and freeze dehydration stress that limit the range of cultivar adaptation. Therefore, development of a comprehensive understanding of the biological mechanisms involved in bud dormancy is needed to promote advances in selection and breeding, and to develop improved cultural practices for existing grape cultivars. The seasonally indeterminate grapevine, which continuously develops compound axillary buds during the growing season, provides an excellent system for dissecting dormancy, because the grapevine does not transition through terminal bud development prior to dormancy. This study used gene expression …

Microbiology, Immunology, and Tropical Medicine Faculty Publications

Background. Throughout Asia there is an unprecedented link between cholangiocarcinoma and infection with the liver fluke Opisthorchis viverrini. Multiple processes including chronic inflammation and secretion of parasite proteins into the biliary epithelium drive infection towards cancer. Until now, the mechanism and effects of parasite protein entry into cholangiocytes was unknown.

Methods. Various microscopy techniques were used to identify O. viverrini extracellular vesicles (EVs) and their internalization by human cholangiocytes. Using mass spectrometry we characterised the EV proteome and associated changes in cholangiocytes after EV uptake, and detected EV proteins in bile of infected hamsters and humans. Cholangiocyte proliferation and …

Evaluation Of Cytosine Dna Methylation Of The Biomphalaria Glabratahe At Shock Protein 70 Locus After Biological And Physiological Stresses, Wannaporn Ittiprasert, Andre Miller, Matty Knight, Matt Tucker, Michael H. Hsieh

Microbiology, Immunology, and Tropical Medicine Faculty Publications

Deoxyribonucleic (DNA) methylation is one of the widespread epigenetic modifications of genomic DNA, and has been postulated to be a predisposing influence on disease onset and infections. The ability to quantify differences in DNA methylation between the genomes of normal vs.stressed Biomphalaria glabrata would help to profile changes potentially linked to resistance to Schistosoma mansoni infection. Thus, this study sought to measure differences in cytosine DNA methylation of various B. glabrata tissues responding over time to either biological or physiological stresses (S. mansoni exposure vs. heat shock). Here, this study measured DNA methylation at the B. glabrataheat …

Predicting Toucan Locations In Panama Using Arcgis, Daniel J. Herrera

Geography: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

Toucans are omnivorous birds native to southern Latin America and South America. They are non-migratory, and their range is disputed among experts. In an attempt to develop a better understanding of the range and behavior of toucans, correlations between toucan presence and geographic features of the area were analyzed to create a location probability map.

The Transcriptomic And Evolutionary Signature Of Social Interactions Regulating Honey Bee Caste Development, Svjetlana Vojvodic, Brian R. Johnson, Brock Harpur, Clement Kent, Amro Zayed, Kirk E. Anderson, Timothy A. Linksvayer Nov 2015

The Transcriptomic And Evolutionary Signature Of Social Interactions Regulating Honey Bee Caste Development, Svjetlana Vojvodic, Brian R. Johnson, Brock Harpur, Clement Kent, Amro Zayed, Kirk E. Anderson, Timothy A. Linksvayer

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

The caste fate of developing female honey bee larvae is strictly socially regulated by adult nurse workers. As a result of this social regulation, nurse-expressed genes as well as larval-expressed genes may affect caste expression and evolution. We used a novel transcriptomic approach to identify genes with putative direct and indirect effects on honey bee caste development, and we subsequently studied the relative rates of molecular evolution at these caste-associated genes. We experimentally induced the production of new queens by removing the current colony queen, and we used RNA sequencing to study the gene expression profiles of both developing larvae …

The Oedipus Hex: Regulating Family After Marriage Equality, Courtney Megan Cahill Nov 2015

The Oedipus Hex: Regulating Family After Marriage Equality, Courtney Megan Cahill

Scholarly Publications

Now that national marriage equality for same-sex couples has become the law of the land, commentators are turning their attention from the relationships into which some gays and lesbians enter to the mechanisms on which they — and many others — rely in order to reproduce. Even as one culture war makes way for another, however, there is something that binds them: a desire to establish the family. This Article focuses on a problematic manifestation of that desire: the incest prevention justification. The incest prevention justification posits that the law ought to regulate alternative reproduction in order to minimize the …

Caution For Software Use Of New Statistical Methods (R), Akiva J. Lorenz, Barry S. Markman, Shlomo Sawilowsky

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Open source programming languages such as R allow statisticians to develop and rapidly disseminate advanced procedures, but sometimes at the expense of a proper vetting process. A new example is the least trimmed squares regression available in R’s lqs() in the MASS library. It produces pretty regression lines, particularly in the presence of outliers. However, this procedure lacks a defined standard error, and thus it should be avoided.

A Delayed Mathematical Model For The Acute Inflammatory Response To Infection, Carlo Bianca, Luca Guerrini, Julien Riposo Nov 2015

A Delayed Mathematical Model For The Acute Inflammatory Response To Infection, Carlo Bianca, Luca Guerrini, Julien Riposo

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

This paper deals with further developments on a mathematical model recently proposed for the modeling of the acute inflammatory response to infection or trauma. In particular in order to take into account that some interactions have not an immediate effect, we introduce time delays. Specifically the paper deals with the existence of steady states, determining the parameter regimes where the equilibrium points are stable, and the onset of Hopf bifurcation appears. Numerical simulations are performed with the main aim of supporting the analytical results and investigate further dynamics.

Lie Symmetry Analysis And Conservation Laws For A Fisher Equation With Variable Coefficients, Mar?A Rosa, Mar?A S. Bruz?N, Mar?A L. Gandarias

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In this paper, we study a generalized Fisher equation with variable coefficients which has applications governing the spatiotemporal dynamics of the bacterial population and tumor growth. Conservation laws for this equation are constructed for the first time by using the new conservation theorem due to Ibragimov as well as the Lie symmetries. Furthermore, some conservation laws are derived by employing the direct multipliers method of Anco and Bluman.

On Parameter Estimation By Nonlinear Least Squares In Some Special Two-Parameter Exponential Type Models, Darija Markovi´C, Luka Borozan

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Two-parameter growth models of exponential type f (t;a,b) = g(t)exp(a+bh(t)), where a and b are unknown parameters and g and h are some known functions, are frequently employed in many different areas such as biology, finance, statistic, medicine, ect. The unknown parameters must be estimated from the data (wi, ti, yi), i = 1, . . . ,n, where ti denote the values of the independent variable, yi are respective estimates of regression function f and wi > 0 are some data weights. A very popular and widely used method for parameter estimation is the method of least squares. In practice, …

Plane Waves On Rotating Microstretch Elastic Solid With Temperature Dependent Elastic Properties, Mohammad I. A. Othman, Adnan Jahangir

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Plane waves propagating in generalized thermoelastic half space rotating with specific angular frequency has been investigated. The appropriate model of the problem in context of Green and Naghdi theory is generated, while modulus of elasticity is taken as a linear function of reference temperature. An exact approach of normal mode analysis method is implemented to obtain the expression for the displacement components, stresses and temperature distribution functions. The variations of the considered variables against the vertical distance are illustrated graphically and a comparison is made for results predicted by both the theories in presence and absence of rotation effect we …

Chaotic Dynamics And Synchronization Of Cournot Duopoly Game With A Logarithmic Demand Function, A. M. A. El-Sayed, A. A. Elsadany, A. M. Awad

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

This paper analyzed the dynamics of Cournot duopoly game with a logarithmic demand function. We assumed that the owners of both firms played with bounded rationality expectation. The existence of equilibrium points and its local stability of the output game are investigated. The complex dynamics, bifurcations and chaos are displayed by numerical experiments. Numerical methods showed that the higher values of speeds of adjustment act on the Nash equilibrium that becomes unstable through period doubling bifurcations, more complex attractors are created around it. The chaotic behavior of the game has been controlled by using feedback control method. we investigated the …

A Heuristic Method For Integer Programming Using Discrete Hybrid Evolutionary Algorithm, Hong Li, Li Zhang, Yong-Chang Jiao Nov 2015

A Heuristic Method For Integer Programming Using Discrete Hybrid Evolutionary Algorithm, Hong Li, Li Zhang, Yong-Chang Jiao

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

A discrete hybrid evolutionary algorithm is developed to solve global numerical optimization problems with discrete variables. In this algorithm, the orthogonal experimental design acts as the crossover operator to achieve crossover, and the migration operator is employed to keep the population’s diversity. In addition, the simplified quadratic interpolation method is taken as a local search operator, which is adopted to improve the algorithm’s local search ability. Moreover, a few of foreign chromosomes, which are generated via randomly perturbing the best candidate chromosome in the current population, are introduced into the next generation to avoid most of chromosomes gradually clustering around …

Encryption Applications Of A Generalized Chaotic Map, Salwa K. Abd-El-Hafiz, Ahmed G. Radwan, Sherif H. Abdel-Haleem

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

This paper presents the mathematical aspects of a generalized Sine map with arbitrary powers and scaling factor. The added parameters increase the degrees of freedom of the Sine map and give a versatile response that can be utilized in many applications. For each added parameter, the map’s chaotic behavior is analyzed using fixed points, bifurcation diagrams and Lyapunov exponents. Furthermore, two image encryption applications are introduced based on the generalized Sinemap. The first system only performs pixelvalue substitutions to focus on the effect of utilizing the generalized map. This system is controlled by fifteen different parameters and initial conditions of …
