Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Scrub lupine ( Lupinus aridorum McFarlin ex Beckner) is an endangered plant restricted to the Winter Haven and Mount Dora ridge systems in central Florida that has declined primarily due to habitat loss ( USFWS, 1987 ). Polymorphic genetic markers are needed to answer questions about genetic diversity and connectivity among L. aridorum populations, genetic relatedness among Florida lupine species including the closely related Gulf Coast lupine ( L. westianus Small), and hybridization between sympatric populations of L. aridorum and sky-blue lupine ( L. diffusus Nutt.; Bupp, 2013 ).

The Television Viewing, Dating, And Academics Of Young Adults, Michael D. Milmine

Master's Theses

Purpose of the Study

More than ever before, young adults have access to television content. Television programs are no longer relegated to the television set, but can be accessed on desktops, laptops, tablets, and even smartphones. The accessibility of television has increasingly allowed young adults to spend a significant portion of their day viewing these programs. Gathering information on how this viewing is related to their dating and academic habits is important to better understand the decision-making and outcomes for young adults in these two central areas of their lives. The purpose of this study was to measure the relationship …

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

The Virginia Initiative for Science Teaching and Achievement (VISTA) provides high-quality professional development for teachers and administrators to enhance the quality of their science instructional programs. One emphasis of this program is helping teachers learn to implement Problem-Based Learning in the elementary science classroom. Problem-Based Learning (PBL) has the potential to produce significant positive outcomes for students, such as increased student engagement, and opportunities for in-depth critical thinking [1]. Teachers find PBL challenging because it does take additional time for planning and material acquisition, but experience has shown that the benefits outweigh these challenges. Setting clear goals, identifying specific learning …

Physiological Function Of Fus: An Rna Binding Protein In Motor Neuron Disease, Liuqing Yang Jan 2015

Physiological Function Of Fus: An Rna Binding Protein In Motor Neuron Disease, Liuqing Yang

Theses and Dissertations--Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry

FUS is an RNA binding protein implicated in the motor neuron disease— amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, also called Lou Gehrig’s disease). ALS is a fatal neurodegenerative disease characterized by progressive motor neuron death. Mutations in the FUS gene cause about 4% of familial ALS (FUS ALS). Mutated FUS protein mislocalizes from the motor neuron nucleus to the cytoplasm and forms inclusions in the cytoplasm. It is unclear how FUS mislocalization induces motor neuron dysfunction and degeneration. This dissertation research was designed to investigate the physiological functions of FUS in the nucleus, with a purpose to shed light on the pathogenesis …

Physical Interactions Between Neuropilin And Vegfrs, Integrins In Regulating Endothelial Cell Functions, Xiaobo Li Jan 2015

Physical Interactions Between Neuropilin And Vegfrs, Integrins In Regulating Endothelial Cell Functions, Xiaobo Li

Theses and Dissertations--Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry

The neuropilin (Nrp) family consists of multifunctional cell surface receptors with critical roles in a number of different cell and tissue types. A core aspect of Nrp function is ligand-dependent cellular adhesion and migration, where it controls the multistep process of cellular motility through integration of ligand binding, receptor coupling and signaling via the coordinated action of its extracellular and intracellular domains. While Nrp regulates cellular adhesion and motility in the cardiovascular and nervous systems under physiological conditions, the emerging pathological role of Nrp in tumor cell migration and metastasis has been identified and provides motivation for continued efforts toward …

Beryllium Nitrate Supports Fibroblast Migration As An Essential Component Of Skin And Limb Regeneration In Axolotls, Adam Boyd Cook Jan 2015

Beryllium Nitrate Supports Fibroblast Migration As An Essential Component Of Skin And Limb Regeneration In Axolotls, Adam Boyd Cook

Theses and Dissertations--Biology

Tissue regeneration in salamanders is a robust process that is not easily interrupted or altered. Therefore, inhibiting regeneration provides a means to interrogate the underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms regulating this complex event. Here we show that application of a relatively low concentration of beryllium nitrate solution (100mM) causes a delay in skin regeneration and severely alters normal limb regeneration. We provide evidence showing a beryllium-induced reduction in dermal fibroblast migration in vivo and in vitro. We link this phenomenon to delayed regeneration of the skin and abnormal blastema formation resulting in limb patterning defects during regeneration. Though our …

Role Of Sox11 During Vertebrate Ocular Morphogenesis And Retinal Neurogenesis, Lakshmi Shashidharan Pillai Jan 2015

Role Of Sox11 During Vertebrate Ocular Morphogenesis And Retinal Neurogenesis, Lakshmi Shashidharan Pillai

Theses and Dissertations--Biology

Microphthalmia, anophthalmia, and coloboma (MAC) are distinct abnormalities demonstrating a continuum of developmental eye defects that contribute to 15-20% of blindness and severe vision deficiencies in children worldwide. The genetic etiology of MAC is large, complex and encompasses the whole developmental biology of the eye. Understanding how the eye develops will aid in identifying genes and developmental pathways involved in MAC. Although investigation of the genetic architecture of congenital anomalies is growing exponentially, much work remains to be accomplished to understand the complex, genetically heterogeneous congenital anomalies, which significantly impact childhood vision.

With an interest in elucidating the mechanisms that …

Context-Dependent Individual Variation In Foraging Behaviour And Parental Care In House Sparrows, David Moldoff Jan 2015

Context-Dependent Individual Variation In Foraging Behaviour And Parental Care In House Sparrows, David Moldoff

Theses and Dissertations--Biology

Behaviors can exhibit a wide degree of plasticity depending on the environmental context in which they are expressed. Despite this, repeatable differences have been found among and within individuals across a wide range of taxa. For my thesis, I investigated individual differences in foraging and parental care. In the first experiment, I assessed house sparrows (Passer domesticus) for domain-generality among neophobia, habituation and associative learning as they are all responses to novelty. While the results of the study find individual differences in each of these contexts the conclusion supported separate mechanisms for each response (domain-specificity). In the second experiment, I …

Dual Functions For Insulinoma-Associated 1 In Retinal Development, Marie A. Forbes-Osborne Jan 2015

Dual Functions For Insulinoma-Associated 1 In Retinal Development, Marie A. Forbes-Osborne

Theses and Dissertations--Biology

Proper visual system function requires tightly controlled proliferation of a pool of relatively homogeneous retinal progenitor cells, followed by the stepwise specification and differentiation of multiple distinct cell types. These retinal cells, both neuronal and glial, must be generated in the correct numbers, and the correct laminar location to permit the formation of synaptic connections between individual cell types. After synapses are made, constant signaling is required as part of normal retinal function, and to maintain cellular identity and connectivity. These processes rely on both extrinsic and intrinsic signaling, with regulation of gene expression by cascades of transcription factors having …

Isolation And Identification Of Bioactive Compounds From Conradina Canescens Gray, Noura S. Dosoky

Dissertations

Natural products have been used in traditional medicine throughout history. All drugs and medicinal agents were derived from natural substances or inspired by a natural product. The major source of these remedies is higher plants which are great sources for new compounds that have a wide variety of activity. Conradina canescens Gray (false rosemary) is a common evergreen shrub, endemic to a small area of west Florida and adjacent Alabama and southern parts of Mississippi, USA. There are very limited studies on the chemical composition of this plant species. According to the available literature, this species has not been tested …

Allosteric Regulation Of The Ribosome By L-Tryptophan, Emily R. Gordon Jan 2015

Allosteric Regulation Of The Ribosome By L-Tryptophan, Emily R. Gordon

Dissertations

Ribosomes often times work in unison with both nascent peptides and accessory molecules to regulate expression of genes by controlling protein synthesis. This allows for fine regulation of gene activity based on current cellular physiology. In prokaryotes, there are numerous differences among regulatory nascent peptides that induce ribosome arrest, thus allowing for specificity in regulation. In the tna operon the amino acid L-tryptophan, L-Trp, can selectively interact with the ribosome translating tnaC mRNA, and thereby control the expression of the enzyme tryptophanase and an L-Trp transporter. It has been suggested that the combined action of L-Trp and the regulatory TnaC …

Animal And Pasture Responses To Grazing Management Of Chemically Suppressed Tall Fescue In Mixed Pastures, Jessica A. Williamson Jan 2015

Animal And Pasture Responses To Grazing Management Of Chemically Suppressed Tall Fescue In Mixed Pastures, Jessica A. Williamson

Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences

Treatment of endophyte-infected tall fescue [Lolium arundinaceum (Schreb.) Darbysh] with the broad leaf herbicide Chaparral® can mitigate fescue toxicosis and enhance forage quality by suppressing seedhead emergence. Applying the herbicide to fescue pastures also reduces forage mass and promotes severe spot grazing when pastures are continuously grazed. A grazing experiment was conducted with steers (2013) and heifers (2014) to evaluate animal and plant responses in fescue-bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) mixtures treated with Chaparral to determine the effects of grazing management on pasture carrying capacity, nutritive values, botanical composition, and animal performance. Continuous and rotational (i.e., four subdivisions to …

Investigations Into The Home Lawn Carbon Balance And Improving The Efficacy Of T-Phylloplanins For Combating Turfgrass Diseases, Kenneth L. Cropper

Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences

Over the past couple of decades, there has been an increased interest in evaluating the environmental impacts of some turfgrass management practices. Two independent studies were conducted to examine different questions of turfgrass management impacts and sustainability. The first study examined the inputs and outputs of four different turfgrass home lawn systems. Two of these systems were designated as high maintenance and were composed of either a pure stand of Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) or tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.). The other two systems were designated as low maintenance and were composed of either a pure stand …

Evaluation Of Input-Intensive Soybean Management Systems And The Effect Of Lactofen Application On Soybean Physiology, John M. Orlowski

Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences

In an effort to maximize yields, many soybean growers have begun moving to intensive, input-based soybean management systems. However, limited reliable information exists about the effect of these inputs on soybean yield. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of individual inputs and combinations of inputs as part of high-yield management systems on soybean seed yield and to determine the effect of one of these inputs, lactofen, on soybean physiology. Small plot studies were established in nine states across the Midwest. A number of commercially available soybean inputs were evaluated individually and in combination to determine their …

Examining Vegetative Growth Of Cool-Season Forage Grasses For Dairy Cattle Grazing Preference, Eric D. Billman

Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences

The objective of this study was to determine dairy cattle preference amongst four species of cool-season forage grasses: eight orchardgrasses (Dactylis glomerata L.), five tall fescues [Schedonorus arundinaceus (Schreb.) Dumort.], five perennial ryegrasses (Lolium perenne L.), and six festuloliums [xFestulolium braunii (K. Richt.) A. Camus.]; 24 cultivars in total. Each grazing trial utilized four Holstein-Friesian heifers over six hours. Maturity differences were eliminated by having animals graze only vegetative material. After six grazing trials (three each in 2014 and 2015), consistent results in animal preference were not found; three of the six trials did show preference …
