An Examination Of Mathematical Models For Infectious Disease, David M. Jenkins Jan 2015

An Examination Of Mathematical Models For Infectious Disease, David M. Jenkins

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Starting with the original 1926 formulation of the SIR (Susceptible-Infected-Removed) model for infectious diseases, mathematical epidemiology continued to grow. Many extensions such as the SEIR, MSIR, and MSEIR models were developed using SIR as a basis to model diseases in a variety of circumstances. By taking the original SIR model, and reducing the system of three first-order equations to a single first-order equation, analysis shows that the model predicts two possible situations. This analysis is followed by discussion of an alternative use of the SIR model which allows for one to track the amount of sustainable genetic variation in a …

Sketching The Stories Of The Ausbund, Carita B. Keim Ms. Jan 2015

Sketching The Stories Of The Ausbund, Carita B. Keim Ms.

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

This project investigates the ballads compiled into the Ausbund, which literally means “a true selection or sampling. This hymnbook is the oldest one continuously in use in the world. Although the hymnbook was compiled by Amish and Mennonite ancestors, only the Amish use it today. Through creative non-fiction, this series of essays sketches ways in which the hymnbook continues to influence the Amish and Mennonite community. It attempts to prove that the Ausbund is a unique piece of art that has literary, cultural, and spiritual value. It had value in the sixteenth century, when most of the hymns were penned, …

Interactions Between Phospholipids And Polymers With Time Resolved Fluorescence Spectroscopy, Zachary E. Hier Jan 2015

Interactions Between Phospholipids And Polymers With Time Resolved Fluorescence Spectroscopy, Zachary E. Hier

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Interactions between macromolecule species and fluorescently labeled phospholipids were explored in supported lipid bilayers (SLBs). The concentration and the lateral mobility of the labeled phospholipids within the confocal volume were determined via fluorescence correlation spectroscopy. Low molecular weight polystyrene was used for the neutral charged macromolecule. Three separate concentrations of polystyrene were used and a significant change in lateral mobility of phospholipids was found for the SLB doped with all three concentration of styrene from polystyrene (molecular weight = 1000). Polyester with mimic lysine pendant groups was used for the cationic polymer at physiological pH. A large decrease in the …

The Transmuted Exponentiated Generalized-G Family Of Distributions, Haitham M. Yousof, Ahmed Z. Afify, Morad Alizadeh, Nadeem Shafique Butt, Gholamhossein Hamedani

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

We introduce a new class of continuous distributions called the transmuted exponentiated generalized-G family which extends the exponentiated generalized-G class introduced by Cordeiro et al. (2013). We provide some special models for the new family. Some of its mathematical properties including explicit expressions for the ordinary and incomplete moments, generating function, Rényi and Shannon entropies, order statistics and probability weighted moments are derived. The estimation of the model parameters is performed by maximum likelihood. The flexibility of the proposed family is illustrated by means of an applications to real dataset.

Determination Of The Structure Of Sphingomyelin By Tandem Mass Spectrometry And Matrix - Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization, Antonio Ganios

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Mass spectrometry is a method that uses masses to determine the structure of a compound. This is completed by first charging the compound until it is a cation or anion, and then its molecular weight can be determined by measuring a mass to charge ratio. The focus of this study was determination of sphingomyelin’s structure. The purpose of this was that sphingomyelin has been shown to play a critical role in many biological pathways and being able to identify this lipid could prove to be beneficial for preventative medicine. Utilizing electrospray ionization (ESI) Quadruple-Time-of-flight (Q-TOF) mass spectrometry on a Waters …

Drug Interactions With Glutaredoxin Orthologues, Kahlilah R. Napper, Thomas C. Leeper, Ram Khattri, Daniel Morris, Caroline Davis Jan 2015

Drug Interactions With Glutaredoxin Orthologues, Kahlilah R. Napper, Thomas C. Leeper, Ram Khattri, Daniel Morris, Caroline Davis

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Glutaredoxin, an enzymatic protein, is an important component of cell viability and function. It catalyzes reactions involved in DNA synthesis and innate immunity [1,4]. Glutaredoxin is also essential in antibiotic resistance in pathogenic bacterial species. Pseudomonas aeruginosa in particular is responsible for infecting the lung tissue of its human hosts, resulting in the development of pneumonia and cystic fibrosis [3]. Because glutaredoxin is pertinent in cell proliferation of eukaryotic and bacterial cells alike, medicinal fragments that take advantage of the subtle differences in protein structure of the orthologous proteins can be synthesized and enhanced to bind bacterial glutaredoxins, without inhibiting …

Humidity And Rest Period Effects On Viscid Silk Recovery, Catherine Donley Jan 2015

Humidity And Rest Period Effects On Viscid Silk Recovery, Catherine Donley

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Spider silk applications, and applications of composite materials generally, are limited due to lack of recovery once damaged. Viscid silk, however, is known to have self-healing capabilities which restore, at least partially, its initial properties. If maximized, this ability could potentially increase viscid silk’s practicality and ultimately, provide insight into a self-healing system of use in synthetics. To that end, samples of viscid silk spun by female Larinioides cornutus spiders were tested via cyclical loading at 3 different relative humidities, with 3 different rest period lengths between complete cycles. Data from previously-performed tensile tests conducted at the same 3 humidities …

The Optimization Of Mitoneet Synthesis, Purification And Mutation Stability In The [2fe-2s] Cluster, Alexandria Defabio Jan 2015

The Optimization Of Mitoneet Synthesis, Purification And Mutation Stability In The [2fe-2s] Cluster, Alexandria Defabio

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

MitoNEET, a mitochondrial membrane protein with an unsymmetrical Fe-S cluster coordination, was compared to similar proteins within the Rieske and Ferredoxin families. Point mutations were introduced via site-directed mutagenesis to induce stability, greater retention of the cluster, and to uncover structural limitations of the protein. Mutations were made within the cluster coordination and within the hydrophobic core of the protein. Some of the cluster mutations displayed a natural affinity for nickel during immobilized metal-ion affinity chromatography. It is possible that these mutations aid in the formation of a chelate when exposed to nickel. Spectroscopic monitoring of changes in cluster stability …

Histological And Immunohistochemical Analyses Used To Study Craniosynostosis In Pediatric Patients, Palvir Kaur Baadh Jan 2015

Histological And Immunohistochemical Analyses Used To Study Craniosynostosis In Pediatric Patients, Palvir Kaur Baadh

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Craniosynostosis is a condition in which one or more of the sutures of the skull grow together (fuse) earlier than normal in infants. Sutures are large gaps located at the bony plates or joints of the head. Craniosynostosis causes the skull to expand and grow in the direction of any normal open suture, creating craniofacial complications, such as drooping eyelids and abnormal intracranial pressure, head shape, or brain morphology. This premature fusion or ossification of sutures affects approximately 300-500 live births in 1,000,000 (Kolpakova-Hart et al., 2008) with considerable variation in phenotype, depending on which suture(s) is involved. Corrective …

Brainstorm Radiation Systems Inc, Calia Battista, Leah Krichbaum, Lauren Wickert, Cody George, Ryan Manges

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Many different designs have been created to immobilize patients for radiation therapy of the head and neck. Options exist which result in varying degrees of patient comfort, radiation attenuation, and limitation of movement. While one requirement can be met effectively, it is difficult to design a system which adequately meets all requirements for radiation therapy. Brainstorm Radiation Systems aims to address all of these variables and transform the patient and technician experience during radiation treatment. The requirements for our head and neck immobilization design were to immobilize the patient within 3mm of movement for at least 30 minutes, and must …

Morphometric Analysis Of Left & Right Tonsils In Adult Symptomatic Type 1 Chiari Patients And Healthy Controls, Louis J. Konstan Jan 2015

Morphometric Analysis Of Left & Right Tonsils In Adult Symptomatic Type 1 Chiari Patients And Healthy Controls, Louis J. Konstan

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Historically, CMI has been radiographically defined by cerebellar tonsillar descent below the foramen magnum (FM) more than 5 mm (2). This measurement is typically made with a single sagittal plane T1-or T2-weighted MR image. Studies have obtained additional morphometric measurements to help diagnose CMI, and establish normal values (3,4). These studies were somewhat These studies were somewhat successful in differentiating CMI patients from healthy subjects. However, results from these studies have shown that the standard TD measurement does not necessarily correlate with neurological symptom severity as patients with CMI-like symptoms have been found with a TD of less than 5 …

The Effects Of Substrate Roughness In Air And Water On The Gecko Adhesive System, Amanda Palecek Jan 2015

The Effects Of Substrate Roughness In Air And Water On The Gecko Adhesive System, Amanda Palecek

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

In an effort to better understand the fascinating gecko adhesive system, scientists have long tested the abilities of the gecko in controlled conditions that mimic the gecko’s native environment. The effects of humidity, environmental temperature, and exposure to water have all been tested. Roughness, however has not been studied in great detail. Surfaces of varying roughnesses are all over the gecko’s natural environment. We tested geckos on hydrophilic silicon carbide sandpapers of varying roughnesses in both air and water to attempt to better study the effects of roughness on gecko adhesion. When tested on the rougher (1 µm) surface, the …

In order to examine the effects of different micro topographic conditions on sphagnum regeneration, we worked with two species of sphagnum; Sphagnum palustre and Sphagnum capillifolium. The focus of this experiment revolved around identifying which species of sphagnum has the greater capacity to regenerate and which of these two sphagnum species has the competitive advantage. The final results will center around which test container of sphagnum displayed the greatest growth in biomass making it a potential candidate for …

Behavior Of Pollinators That Share Two Co-Flowering Wetland Plant Species, Joshua R. Morris Jan 2015

Behavior Of Pollinators That Share Two Co-Flowering Wetland Plant Species, Joshua R. Morris

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Abstract:

Intermixed, co-flowering plant species often attract the same pollinators and may therefore compete for pollinator visits. Mimulus ringens and Verbena hastata are sympatric wetland plants that flower in synchrony and share many pollinators, the most common being bumblebees. The possibility of competition between these two plant species led to this observational study tracking pollinator movements in an area intermixed with both M. ringens and V. hastata. We identified pollinator species and tracked them as they visited flowers and moved from plant to plant. Smaller bees seemed to prefer the smaller flowers present on the V. hastata, and …

Zymosan Activation Of Tlrs: Stimulation Of Innate Immunity And Nitric Oxide Production, Sarah Loeser Jan 2015

Zymosan Activation Of Tlrs: Stimulation Of Innate Immunity And Nitric Oxide Production, Sarah Loeser

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Chronic inflammation can result in pathophysiological changes to numerous organs of the body such as heart tissue (atherosclerosis) and damage to bone. Sources of inflammation can include autoimmune disease, cancer, and chronic infections such as those triggered by HIV or Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Most of the damage associated with chronic inflammation can be associated with chemical mediators, cytokines, given off by cells of the innate immune system. One measure of an active innate immune system can be assessed by quantifying nitric oxide (NO) production by bone marrow (BM) cells.

The purpose of these experiments is to determine if zymosan, a …

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Tissue engineering is a scientific methodology that provides the means for fabrication of vital tissues in a laboratory with the ultimate goal of translating the tissue to a patient in a clinic. It is a desirable technique in clinical medicine because it eliminates the need for patient tissue grafts and transplants, which have the potential for donor site morbidity and rejection. In tissue engineering, the scaffolding material, typically a polymer upon which tissue is grown, is important. The goal of this research is to investigate optimization of tissue-engineered polymer scaffold constructs for cell proliferation and gene expression. This work includes …

The Psychology Of Terrorism And Radicalization, Gina K. Dejacimo Jan 2015

The Psychology Of Terrorism And Radicalization, Gina K. Dejacimo

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Terrorism and radicalized political groups are an ever-growing subsection of the American and international news cycles. Mainstream media outlets tend to focus on the atrocious actions of terrorists, leaving the American public without a true understanding of what encourages someone to become a violent, radicalized extremist. This paper intends to investigate possible psychological factors that can predict a person’s likelihood to become radicalized and participate in a salafi jihadi terrorist campaign. If such psychological conditions exist, perhaps they are the key to preventing radicalization in the first place, and in turn, the key to preventing any terrorist activity. What other …

Microscopic And Spectroscopic Analysis Of Cadmium Telluride, Jessica Goretty Salazar Jan 2015

Microscopic And Spectroscopic Analysis Of Cadmium Telluride, Jessica Goretty Salazar

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Cadmium telluride (CdTe) remains one of the materials of interest in the fabrication of photovoltaic cells and infrared devices, mainly because of its suitable crystal structure as well as of its small, direct bandgap of 1.5 eV. Since development of such devices requires a high quality and low defect material, the goal of this study is to microscopically and spectroscopically examine not only crystallinity, but also the induced stress in the material due to the effect of substrate orientation. This information is valuable if optimization of sample growth conditions is envisioned. Prior to CdTe deposition by close-spaced sublimation (CSS), Si …

Evaluation Of Small Molecules On The Excitatory Amino Acid Transporter 3 (Eaat3) For The Treatment Of Ocd, Emmanuel Zubia Jan 2015

Evaluation Of Small Molecules On The Excitatory Amino Acid Transporter 3 (Eaat3) For The Treatment Of Ocd, Emmanuel Zubia

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

We seek to discover new drug candidates for the excitatory amino acid transporter 3 (EAAT3) for the treatment of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). We hypothesize that decreasing the glutamatergic transmission via EAAT3 intervention will create an amelioration of the symptoms of OCD. For this we have prepared in-silico binding calculations to identify a better compound that can stimulate EAAT3 and decrease glutamatergic transmission. This research will help us further understand and elucidate the role of glutamate in the neural mechanisms of this illness, which to date remain inconclusive. Those areas of study are significant because, until now, there is no …

Low Power Design Techniques For Data Acquisition, Praveen Kumar Palakurthi Jan 2015

Low Power Design Techniques For Data Acquisition, Praveen Kumar Palakurthi

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Semiconductor technology advancement continues to lead to smaller device geometries. Digital circuits have benefited from the technology scaling whereas analog circuits often suffer in terms of performance and noise immunity. As functionality continues to be integrated onto systems-on-chips, analog circuits consume increasingly more power than digital circuits and the objective of this Dissertation is to explore low power techniques in the context of both digital and analog circuits residing on the same silicon real estate.

As natural signals are in analog form, a necessity exists to convert these into digital form and then back again in order to exploit the …

Versatility Of N-Peptidyl And N-Glycopeptidyl Nitroindolines For The Formation Of Peptide/Glycopeptide Acids, Amides, And Thioesters, Luis Alfonso Barrera Jan 2015

Versatility Of N-Peptidyl And N-Glycopeptidyl Nitroindolines For The Formation Of Peptide/Glycopeptide Acids, Amides, And Thioesters, Luis Alfonso Barrera

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

N-acyl-7-nitroindolines are photoreactive compounds that are known to acylate a number of nucleophiles in inert aprotic solvents under neutral conditions when illuminated at 350 nm. We have assembled a MUC1-derived peptide and Tn or STn-containing MUC1 glycopeptides with a C-terminal photoreactive 7-nitroindoline linker attached to Sieber amide resin by solid phase peptide synThesis using the Fmoc strategy. This type of construction allows for the cleavage of fully protected photoreactive peptides/glycopeptides from the resin with dilute trifluoroacetic acid, or for the direct photorelease of protected peptide/glycopeptide derivatives. Here we demonstrate that N-peptidyl and N-glycopeptidyl 7-nitrindolines can be photochemically converted into their …
