Aligning Technology Education Teaching With Brain Development, Petros Katsioloudis Jan 2015

Aligning Technology Education Teaching With Brain Development, Petros Katsioloudis

STEMPS Faculty Publications

This exploratory study was designed to determine if there is a level of alignment between technology education curriculum and theories of intellectual development. The researcher compared Epstein's Brain Growth Theory and Piaget's Status of Intellectual Development with technology education curriculum from Australia, England, and the United States. The researcher hypothesized that there would be alignment between technology education curriculum, brain growth, and intellectual development theories. The results indicate that students could become more technologically literate citizens if technology education was presented to them earlier in their school careers. School systems and students may be missing an opportunity since technology education …

Altered Connexin 43 Expression Underlies Age-Dependent Decrease Of Regulatory T Cell Suppressor Function In Nonobese Diabetic Mice, Michel Kuczma, Cong-Yi Wang, Leszek Ignatowicz, Robert Gourdi, Piotr Kraj Jan 2015

Altered Connexin 43 Expression Underlies Age-Dependent Decrease Of Regulatory T Cell Suppressor Function In Nonobese Diabetic Mice, Michel Kuczma, Cong-Yi Wang, Leszek Ignatowicz, Robert Gourdi, Piotr Kraj

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Type 1 diabetes is one of the most extensively studied autoimmune diseases, but the cellular and molecular mechanisms leading to T cell–mediated destruction of insulin-producing β cells are still not well understood. In this study, we show that regulatory T cells (Tregs) in NOD mice undergo age-dependent loss of suppressor functions exacerbated by the decreased ability of activated effector T cells to upregulate Foxp3 and generate Tregs in the peripheral organs. This age-dependent loss is associated with reduced intercellular communication mediated by gap junctions, which is caused by impaired upregulation and decreased expression of connexin 43. Regulatory …

Queer Provisionality: Mapping The Generative Failures Of The Transborder Immigrant Tool, Alison R. Reed Jan 2015

Queer Provisionality: Mapping The Generative Failures Of The Transborder Immigrant Tool, Alison R. Reed

English Faculty Publications

Alison Reed investigates the border- and boundary-crossing performance of Electronic Disturbance Theater 2.0’sTransBorder Immigrant Tool (TBT), an incomplete cell phone program that offers GPS, guidance, and poetry to those attempting to cross into the United States across the Mexico/US border. Reed suggests a provocation-based performance of “queer provisionality,” revealing the aesthetics of oppressive power structures by juxtaposing them to social utopias. Interrogating the national neoliberal project of both US liberalism and US conservatism, Reed’s essay is also a transcription of the performances launched around TBT, the social and political machinery set into motion by Electronic Disturbance Theater’s failed utopian project.

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Community composition of the infaunal bivalve fauna of the St. Lucie Estuary and southern Indian River Lagoon, eastern Florida was sampled quarterly for 10 years as part of a long-term benthic monitoring program. A total of 38,514 bivalves of 137 taxa were collected and identified. We utilized this data, along with sediment samples and environmental measurements gathered concurrently, to assess the community composition, distribution, and ecological drivers of the infaunal bivalves of this estuary system. Salinity had the strongest influence on bivalve assemblage across the 15 sites, superseding the influences of sediment type, water turbidity, temperature and other environmental parameters. …

Vapor Flow Resistance Of Dry Soil Layer To Soil Water Evaporation In Arid Environment: An Overview, Xixi Wang Jan 2015

Vapor Flow Resistance Of Dry Soil Layer To Soil Water Evaporation In Arid Environment: An Overview, Xixi Wang

Civil & Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Evaporation from bare sandy soils is the core component of the hydrologic cycle in arid environments, where vertical water movement dominates. Although extensive measurement and modeling studies have been conducted and reported in existing literature, the physics of dry soil and its function in evaporation is still a challenging topic with significant remaining issues. Thus, an overview of the previous findings will be very beneficial for identifying further research needs that aim to advance our understanding of the vapor flow resistance (VFR) effect on soil water evaporation as influenced by characteristics of the dry soil layer (DSL) and evaporation zone …

Electrospray ionization Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (ESI-FTICR-MS) has proven to be a powerful technique revealing complexity and diversity of natural DOM molecules, but its application to DOM analysis in grazing-impacted agricultural systems remains scarce. In the present study, we presented a case study of using ESI-FTICR-MS in analyzing DOM from four headwater streams draining forest-or pasture-dominated watersheds in Virginia, USA. In all samples, most formulas were CHO compounds (71.8-87.9%), with other molecular series (CHOS, CHON, CHONS, and CHOP (N, S)) accounting for only minor fractions. All samples were dominated by molecules falling in the lignin-like region (H/C …

Wavelength Dependent Specific Plasmon Resonance Coupling Of Single Silver Nanoparticles With Egfp, Kerry J. Lee, Tao Huang, Prakash D. Nallathamby

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) possess unique plasmonic properties, enabling them to serve as sub-diffraction light sources and nano-antennae for a wide range of applications. Here we report the specific interaction of single Ag NPs with single EGFP molecules and a high dependence of their interaction upon localized-surface-plasmon-resonance (LSPR) spectra of single Ag NPs and EGFP. The LSPR spectra of single red Ag NPs show a stunning 60 nm blue-shift during their incubation with EGFP, whereas they remain unchanged during their incubation with bovine serum albumin (BSA). Interestingly, the peak wavelengths of the LSPR spectra of green and blue Ag NPs …

Development Of Aflp Markers Associated With Zucchini Yellow Mosaicvirus Resistance In Cucumber (Cucumis Sativus L.), Hasan Özgür Şiğva, Ahmet Fi̇kret Firat, Gülden Hazarhun, Ahmet İpek

Turkish Journal of Botany

Zucchini yellow mosaic virus (ZYMV) is one of the most important pathogens that cause significant yield losses in many cucurbit crops including cucumber (Cucumis sativus L). ZYMV resistance in cucumber is inherited by a single recessive gene. The purpose of this study was to identify molecular markers linked to the gene conferring ZYMV resistance in cucumber. We developed a population of 188 F2 plants derived from inbred cucumber lines. Individual F2 plants were self-pollinated to generate F3 populations. Ten randomly selected plants from each F3 population were tested for ZYMV resistance. We used a bulk segregant analysis method to identify …

Overexpression Of A Soybean Expansin Gene, Gmexp1, Improvesdrought Tolerance In Transgenic Tobacco, Thanh Son Lo, Hoang Duc Le, Vu Thanh Thanh Nguyen, Hoang Ha Chu, Van Son Le, Hoang Mau Chu Jan 2015

Overexpression Of A Soybean Expansin Gene, Gmexp1, Improvesdrought Tolerance In Transgenic Tobacco, Thanh Son Lo, Hoang Duc Le, Vu Thanh Thanh Nguyen, Hoang Ha Chu, Van Son Le, Hoang Mau Chu

Turkish Journal of Botany

The EXP1 gene encodes expansin, which has the ability to loosen the plant cell wall. The soybean expansin gene GmEXP1 is activated specifically during the root elongation process, and thus it plays important roles in root development. During the drought period, changes in pressure within the cell and the fast development of the root allow plants to collect water from deep soil, which in turn helps plants grow and develop. In this study, we have successfully cloned and generated a GmEXP1 construct expressing recombinant expansin protein in tobacco plants. GmEXP1 is expressed in transgenic tobacco plants and passed on to …

Aquaporins As Targets For Stress Tolerance In Plants: Genomic Complexity And Perspectives, Wonkeun John Park, Benjamin Todd Campbell Jan 2015

Aquaporins As Targets For Stress Tolerance In Plants: Genomic Complexity And Perspectives, Wonkeun John Park, Benjamin Todd Campbell

Turkish Journal of Botany

As a multigene family, plant aquaporins function not only in water transport but also in transport of small elements that are important for vegetative and reproductive growth of plants. Increasing evidence exhibits the relevance of aquaporins to tolerance against abiotic and biotic stresses such as drought, nutrient deficiency, and herbivore attack. With the accumulation of crop genome sequencing, it is suggested that several aquaporin genes are conserved in subchromosomal locations as tandem duplicated members. In this review, we will discuss the compelling nature of aquaporins as multifunctional transport channels that are often encoded in clustered regions of genomes and relevant …

Cold stress is a major environmental factor in plant life cycles. Nicotiana benthamiana, which belongs to the family Solanaceae, is one of the most commonly used model species in plant-microbe interaction studies. In total, 5205 differentially expressed genes were identified under cold stress in N. Benthamiana. Of these, 5029 were upregulated and 176 were downregulated within four time periods (4 h, 12 h, 24 h, and 48 h). The common up- and downregulated genes were identified as 692 and 6, respectively. The functional annotations of these genes were studied and these common genes involved in protein, RNA, miscellaneous enzyme families, …

Modeling The Dynamic Processes Of Challenge And Recovery (Stress And Strain) Over Time, Fan Yang Jan 2015

Modeling The Dynamic Processes Of Challenge And Recovery (Stress And Strain) Over Time, Fan Yang

Department of Statistics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

A dynamic process with challenge and recovery is an important branch in the family of stochastic processes. The dependent data of such processes are often observed over time, and hence, are time dependent. The purpose of this dissertation is to develop methods to characterize a dynamic process with challenge and recovery under different dimensionalities and error assumptions. In this dissertation, a univariate dynamic process under Gaussian assumption is discussed first and a bi-logistic model is developed by three different methods: compartment, additive, and Bayesian. Then the discussion is extended to a bivariate hysteresis system with challenge and recovery. Three methods: …

Systematic Placement Of The Turkish Endemic Genus Ekimia (Apiaceae) Based On Morphological And Molecular Data, Dmitry Lyskov, Galina Degtjareva, Tahir Samigullin, Michael Pimenov

Turkish Journal of Botany

The systematic position of the monotypic genus Ekimia H.Duman and M.F.Watson (Apiaceae), a narrow endemic to Turkey, was evaluated on the basis of morphological data and nrDNA ITS sequences. Ekimia bornmuelleri (Hub.-Mor. And Reese) H.Duman and M.F.Watson was initially described in Prangos Lindl. Due to the unique fruit morphology uncommon for this genus it was later shifted to an independent genus. In the Bayesian and most parsimonious trees, E. Bornmuelleri is sister to Laserpitium petrophilum Boiss. And Heldr and Laserpitium glaucum Post within the Daucinae clade. This result is consistent with its morphology: the presence of the primary and secondary …

Molecular Phylogeny And Biogeography Of The South American Genus Metrodorea (Rutaceae), Pedro Dias, Renata Giassi Udulutsch, Jose Rubens Pirani

Turkish Journal of Botany

The genus Metrodorea (Rutaceae), with 6 species, has representatives that vary from small shrubs to tall trees, and its leaf sheaths make it unique in the family; it is restricted to South America, with species diversity concentrated in Brazil. In this study, we applied Bayesian and parsimony methods to infer the molecular phylogeny of Metrodorea, and cladistic biogeographic methods to propose an area cladogram for the genus. All results supported Metrodorea as monophyletic, and the presence of leaf sheaths is reinforced as its key diagnostic feature. Bayesian and parsimony trees were identical for relationships within Metrodorea. The crown clade (M. …

Assessing Approximate Arithmetic Designs In The Presence Of Process Variations And Voltage Scaling, Adnan Aquib Naseer Jan 2015

Assessing Approximate Arithmetic Designs In The Presence Of Process Variations And Voltage Scaling, Adnan Aquib Naseer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As environmental concerns and portability of electronic devices move to the forefront of priorities, innovative approaches which reduce processor energy consumption are sought. Approximate arithmetic units are one of the avenues whereby significant energy savings can be achieved. Approximation of fundamental arithmetic units is achieved by judiciously reducing the number of transistors in the circuit. A satisfactory tradeoff of energy vs. accuracy of the circuit can be determined by trial-and-error methods of each functional approximation. Although the accuracy of the output is compromised, it is only decreased to an acceptable extent that can still fulfill processing requirements. A number of …

Realm Of The Coin: Bitcoin And Civil Procedure, Max I. Raskin Jan 2015

Realm Of The Coin: Bitcoin And Civil Procedure, Max I. Raskin

Fordham Journal of Corporate & Financial Law

Bitcoin is a private currency issued and governed by a global network of computers. Thus far, the majority of legal cases involving bitcoin have been criminal prosecutions or disputes between bitcoin companies. If bitcoin or some iteration continues to grow, courts will need to craft rules of civil jurisdiction. This paper is the first attempt to apply existing rules of civil procedure to bitcoin. Bitcoins ought be treated as tangible property for the purposes of jurisdiction. Although they have an incorporeal form, as a practical matter, courts are able to site bitcoins to a single location and thus should do …

Investigating Anthropogenic Mammoth Extinction With Mathematical Models, Michael Frank, Anneliese Slaton, Teresa Tinta, Alex Capaldi Jan 2015

Investigating Anthropogenic Mammoth Extinction With Mathematical Models, Michael Frank, Anneliese Slaton, Teresa Tinta, Alex Capaldi

Spora: A Journal of Biomathematics

One extinction hypothesis of the Columbian mammoth (Mammuthus columbi), called overkill, theorizes that early humans overhunted the animal. We employ two different approaches to test this hypothesis mathematically: analyze the stability of the equilibria of a 2D ordinary differential equations (ODE) system and develop a metapopulation differential equations model. The 2D ODE system is a modified predator-prey model that also includes migration. The metapopulation model is a spatial expansion of the first model on a rectangular grid. Using this metapopulation system, we model the migration of humans into North America and the response in the mammoth population. These approaches show …

Biology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a highly prevalent form of human hepatic disease and feeding mice a high-fat, high-caloric (HFHC) diet is a standard model of NAFLD. To better understand the genetic basis of NAFLD, we conducted an expression quantitative trait locus (eQTL) analysis of mice fed a HFHC diet. Two-hundred sixty-five (A/J × C57BL/6J) F2 male mice were fed a HFHC diet for 8 wk. eQTL analysis was utilized to identify genomic regions that regulate hepatic gene expression of Xbp1s and Socs3. We identified two overlapping loci for Xbp1s and Socs3 on Chr 1 (164.0–185.4 Mb …

High Definition Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Als Mogelijke Hulp Bij Afasie-Herstel, Dirk B. Den Ouden

Communication Sciences and Disorders Faculty Articles and Research

Some Speculation About Mirror Neurons And Copyright, Stephen M. Mcjohn Jan 2015

Some Speculation About Mirror Neurons And Copyright, Stephen M. Mcjohn

Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works

The internet, a world-wide copy machine, caused some rethinking of copyright law. Cognitive science increasingly suggests that humans are smaller scale, more adaptable, copy machines. Copyright law may again change. V.S. Ramachandran’s "The Tell-Tale Brain" discusses how mirror neurons may enable imitation, detection of others’ intention, and empathy. Ramachandran suggests that mirror neuron circuits could provide the neural substrate for cultural transmission, language, and even consciousness. This essay speculates on the implications for copyright law. It’s not news that people copy. But if cognition and culture depend on the bottom-up imitation by mirror neurons, perhaps some of the central tenets …
