Flow, Spray Pattern, And Droplet Spectra Characteristics Of An Electronically Actuated Variable-Orifice Nozzle, Joe D. Luck, Santosh K. Pitla, Michael P. Sama, Scott A. Shearer

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate the flow rate, spray pattern, and droplet spectra characteristics of an actively controlled variable-orifice nozzle at constant carrier pressures. A commercially available variable-orifice nozzle (VariTarget) was modified to allow for direct electromechanical control of the metering stem. The modified system was tested at five carrier pressures ranging from 138 to 414 kPa and five metering stem (and thus orifice) positions. The metering stem position range was chosen because it provided a linear response in flow rate at each carrier pressure. Flow rate testing indicated a turndown ratio of 2.4:1 at …

Wolcott Hackley Littlejohn: Defender Of The Faith, Kevin M. Burton Jan 2015

Wolcott Hackley Littlejohn: Defender Of The Faith, Kevin M. Burton

Andrews University Seminary Student Journal

Wolcott Hackley Littlejohn was an influential writer, speaker and leader within the early years of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Before he became an active member, he lost his sight and was no longer able to read or write. Nevertheless, he read continuously and wrote copiously through the eyes and hands of another. Littlejohn was also a profound speaker who drew the attention of people from different faiths. He made numerous lasting contributions to Adventism, but his life was at times wrapped up in controversy. In the 1870’s he challenged George Ide Butler and his philosophy of leadership and in the …

Development Of Dual-Bacterial Culture For Benzene Degradation And Biofilm Formation, Aiyarucht Techajindamanee Jan 2015

Development Of Dual-Bacterial Culture For Benzene Degradation And Biofilm Formation, Aiyarucht Techajindamanee

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Dual bacterial culture is the technique using the different characteristic of two bacteria for support the bacterial culture ability. This study developed the dual culture of benzene-degrading bacteria and biofilm-forming bacteria, and optimized the culture conditions promoting their benzene degradation and biofilm formation for increasing benzene-removal efficiency and bacterial stability in benzene treatment systems. Acinetobacter sp. B36 was a benzene-degrading and biofilm-forming bacterium isolated from petroleum wastewater. The bacterial biofilm was promoted by dual-culturing with Pseudomonas sp. BF6 isolated from the same source. The optimum culture conditions were studied focused on co-carbon source, nitrogen source, oxygen and metal ion. The …

Polymorphism In And Humoral Immune Response To Thrombospondin-Related Adhesive Protein Of Plasmodium Vivax (Pvtrap), Rattiporn Kosuwin Jan 2015

Polymorphism In And Humoral Immune Response To Thrombospondin-Related Adhesive Protein Of Plasmodium Vivax (Pvtrap), Rattiporn Kosuwin

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Although circumsporozoite (CSP)-derived immunogens could elicit immunity against malarial sporozoites, the subunit vaccines derived from this molecule has limited clinical efficacy in field studies. Meanwhile, experimental co-immunization of CSP with thrombospondin-related adhesive protein (TRAP) could confer complete protection against parasite challenge. Therefore, a more effective pre-erythrocytic vaccine requires incorporation of TRAP. Despite the functional importance of this molecule in gliding motility and host cell invasion of malarial sporozoites, sequence analyses revealed that TRAP of Plasmodium vivax (PvTRAP) was polymorphic among field isolates, an issue that could compromise vaccine efficacy. To further delineate the extent of diversity in PvTRAP, we analyzed …

Methods: Stem cells from human exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHED) were stimulated with human recombinant Wnt3A at various concentrations (50, 100 and 200ng/ml) in basic growth medium and osteogenic medium. Cell proliferation was determined using colony forming unit assay. The mRNA expression levels of osteogenic-related genes were determined by quantitative real time polymerase chain reaction. The osteogenic differentiation was evaluated using mineralization assays. Values were expressed as mean …

Thermal Conductivity Enhancement Of Epoxy-Based Adhesive Via Incorporating Inorganic Fillers, Chutiphong Sae-Sue Jan 2015

Thermal Conductivity Enhancement Of Epoxy-Based Adhesive Via Incorporating Inorganic Fillers, Chutiphong Sae-Sue

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Owing to a poor thermal conductivity of epoxy resin, the requirement of high heat dissipation in electronic packaging is not overcome. In this research, aluminium oxide (Al2O3) and silicon nitride (Si3N4) filled epoxy-based underfill adhesive were prepared by varying filler loading in the range of 0-5% by volume. Additionally, the epoxy composites were also incorporated with silane-treated particles. For the silane surface treatment of filler particles, N-(2-aminoethyl)-3-(trimethoxysilyl) propylamine (AETMP) was used as coupling agent to achieve good dispersion of particles in the polymer matrix. The results showed that when filler loading was increased, thermal conductivity of composites tended to be …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Ammonia oxidation is the important biological step in nitrogen removal in aquaculture system of shrimp production. This process is driven by the ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and the newly discovered ammonia oxidizing archaea (AOA). In this study, the abundances, communities and autotrophic ammonia oxidation activity of AOA and AOB in the recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) were investigated. Bioballs were sampled from the low and high salinity RAS (0 and 20 PPT, respectively). The abundance of AOA and AOB amoA genes were monitored for 5 months with qPCR. The abundance of AOA amoA genes was 2-700 times higher than AOB in …

Effects Of An Online Training In The Ziggurat Model On The Autism Knowledge Of School-Based Speech-Language Pathologists (Slps), Wendy L. Wilkerson

Theses and Dissertations--Rehabilitation Sciences

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a low-incidence disorder with high impacts on individuals, families, and society. School-based speech-language pathologists (SLPs) have tremendous responsibilities toward individuals with ASD, but pre-service SLPs are not adequately trained to fulfill these expectations. In order to reduce the widespread financial and social impact of ASD, school-based SLPs need to complete effective training to prepare them for the selection of established social-communication practices. One framework for the selection of individualized intervention is the Ziggurat Model (Aspy & Grossman, 2008). The following study used mixed methods to investigate the research question: “Does the ASD knowledge base of …

Troxel Revisited: A New Approach To Third-Party Childcare, Jeffrey A. Parness Jan 2015

Troxel Revisited: A New Approach To Third-Party Childcare, Jeffrey A. Parness

Richmond Public Interest Law Review

This article will first explore the new de facto parent state laws originating in both statutes and cases. These laws often limit current parental decisionmaking about childcare due to an earlier conscious or implicit ceding of parental authority. The article will then examine current third-party childcare laws, including those specially addressing stepparents and grandparents. The analysis will show that such laws typically do not comparably limit current parental decisionmaking due to earlier ceding of parental authority, making third-party childcare more difficult because of requirements like "harm or potential harm to the child." Finally, the article suggests a new approach to …

Recruitment And Selection Strategies In Optometric Education Towards Addressing Human Resource Disparities In Sub-Saharan Africa, Vanessa Moodley, James Loughman, Kovin S. Naidoo

Articles

The dire need for eye care services and a dearth of human resources (HR) in sub-Saharan Africa motivated the setting up of new optometry programmes. However, to make a meaningful impact, geographical, gender, economic and educational disparities must additionally be addressed. A qualitative study utilizing purposive sampling to select academic leadership and students from optometry programmes in sub-Saharan Africa was conducted. Individual and focus group interviews produced data that were coded and analysed using a deductive thematic analysis approach. The themes that emerged as contributing to disparities in access through recruitment and selection were institutional barriers (student intake numbers, programme …

An Assessment Of The Role Of Roads In Population Demography And Genetic Structuring In Two Species Of Lizards In The Northern Chihuahuan Desert, Kevin Floyd Jan 2015

An Assessment Of The Role Of Roads In Population Demography And Genetic Structuring In Two Species Of Lizards In The Northern Chihuahuan Desert, Kevin Floyd

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Roads can fragment habitat and increase mortality rates of wildlife, potentially reducing population sizes and gene flow, which in turn can reduce genetic diversity through genetic drift. Although negative road impacts have been found in a variety of taxa, not all species are impacted. For instance, species that move less and rarely encounter roads and those that avoid the roads are predicted to not be negatively affected. Yet tests of these predictions are uncommon, especially for reptiles and particularly lizards. Side-blotched lizards (Uta stansburiana) are small sit-and-wait predators, while the larger marbled whiptails (Aspidoscelis marmorata) are active foragers. Their responses …

The Role Of P62/Imp2 In Breast Cancer Progression, Yang Li Jan 2015

The Role Of P62/Imp2 In Breast Cancer Progression, Yang Li

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Breast cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in women. In most patients with breast cancer, it is not the primary tumor that leads to death, but rather metastatic tumors. Once breast cancer spreads to other organs in the body, the disease becomes almost incurable. It is estimated that about 20% to 50% of patients diagnosed with primary breast cancer will develop metastatic disease. Considering this, it is important to understand the molecular and cellular mechanisms behind metastatic breast cancer and to identify new proteins that regulate the metastatic process. These proteins may be used as targets …

Expression And Functional Analysis Of Lipids And Glycolipids From The Mammal-Dwelling Stages Of Trypanosoma Cruzi, Felipe Gazos Lopes

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Trypanosoma cruzi is the causative agent of the life-threatening Chagas disease, in which increased platelet aggregation related to myocarditis is observed. Platelet-activating factor (PAF) is a potent intercellular lipid mediator and second messenger that exerts its activity through a PAF-specific receptor (PAFR). Previous data from our group suggested that T. cruzi synthesizes a phospholipid with PAF-like activity. The structure of T. cruzi PAF-like molecule, however, remains elusive. Here, we have purified and structurally characterized the putative T. cruzi PAF-like molecule by electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry (ESI-MS/MS). Our ESI-MS/MS data demonstrated that the T. cruzi PAF-like molecule is actually a lysophosphatidylcholine …

Bayesian Adaptive Penalized Splines In Nonparametric Regression And In Spectral Time Series Analysis, Luis Angel Mora Jan 2015

Bayesian Adaptive Penalized Splines In Nonparametric Regression And In Spectral Time Series Analysis, Luis Angel Mora

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

A Bayesian approach to nonparametric regression using Penalized splines (P-splines) is presented. The approach uses the linear mixed model formulation of P-spines. The usual model assumes a single value for the smoothing parameter controlling the amount of smoothing of the fitted function. The main focus of the Thesis is on spatially adaptive smoothing where the smoothing parameter is a function of the covariate so that different amounts of smoothing are applied in different regions of the covariate. An application to spectral time series analysis will be demonstrated. Markov chain Monte Carlo methods are used to make inference based on the …

Recovery Of Nutrient Nitrogen From Municipal Wastewater Residuals By Gas Membrane Separation, Evelyn Rios Jan 2015

Recovery Of Nutrient Nitrogen From Municipal Wastewater Residuals By Gas Membrane Separation, Evelyn Rios

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

There are relatively high amounts of ammonia returned to the headworks of a municipal wastewater plant that are extracted from the dewatering process. This ammonia load contributes to a significant oxygen demand in the secondary treatment, requiring greater air blower energy costs. This goal of this research was to evaluate the feasibility of the recovery of an ammonium sulfate product from belt press filtrate. The objectives of this research were to: (1) analyze wastewater treatment average monthly data flows and constituents with respect to ammonia nitrification, (2) the evaluate the technical performance of a two sage gas-separation membrane for recovering …

Development Of A Yeast-Based Assay For The Functional Characterization Of Fkbp52/ Î?-Catenin Interactions With The Androgen Receptor, Theresa Anne Rodriguez Jan 2015

Development Of A Yeast-Based Assay For The Functional Characterization Of Fkbp52/ Î?-Catenin Interactions With The Androgen Receptor, Theresa Anne Rodriguez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Prostate cancer development is uniquely dependent on the androgen receptorâ??s (ARâ??s) transcriptional regulation in response to hormone binding. Current therapies directly target AR acting as an antagonist at androgen binding sites. However, once androgen-dependence is lost, meaning the patient has progressed into a late-stage hormone resistant phenotype, all current treatments are essentially ineffective. Utilizing the yeast strain Saccharomyces cerevisiae we are capable of creating a model system that allows for the exogenous expression of AR while still retaining the chaperone components needed for this steroid receptor complex. The 52kDa FK506 binding protein (FKBP52) has been shown to be an important …
