Analysis And Suppression Of Engine Hood Vibrations Under Random Road Excitations, Hooman Farrokhzadeh Jan 2015

Analysis And Suppression Of Engine Hood Vibrations Under Random Road Excitations, Hooman Farrokhzadeh

Wayne State University Theses

Vehicle designs and developments must meet safety legislations along with market demands. Safety regulations are mainly concerned with how a vehicle body performs in crashes, during which pedestrian collision is the one of the most important issues. When a vehicle strikes a pedestrian, its engine hood will most likely hit the head of the pedestrian, causing serious injuries. To reduce the severity of the injuries, along with market demands to improve vehicle fuel economy and performance, engineers have considered the design solution of reduction of the vehicle hood thickness (and hence its weight) and the use of advanced light materials. …

Synthesis, Characterization, And Rna Reactivity Of Amino-Acid-Linked Cisplatin Analogues, Xun Bao Jan 2015

Synthesis, Characterization, And Rna Reactivity Of Amino-Acid-Linked Cisplatin Analogues, Xun Bao

Wayne State University Dissertations

The essential role of ribosomal RNA (rRNA) in the cell life cycle is highlighted by protein synthesis; therefore, the ribosome is considered to be an ideal drug target. Ribosomal RNAs exhibit a high level of structural diversity. The well-known anticancer drug cisplatin was previously applied as a chemical probe of rRNA structure to determine solvent accessible purines (guanosine) in vivo and in vitro. Cisplatin accumulates faster on RNA than DNA, with less chance of repair. As such, designing new RNA-targeting Pt compounds is not only a promising direction for chemical-probing applications, but also for the design of anticancer drugs that …

Ovarian Cancer is the fifth leading cause of cancer-related death of women in the United States. Epithelial Ovarian Cancer (EOC) constitutes 85-90% of malignancies within the ovary, with an alarming majority of these cases diagnosed at advanced stage. While most patients are initially highly responsive to the current treatment standard, there is a very high probability that they will recur with a drug resistant fatal disease. Currently there is no validated comprehensive model of disease progression for ovarian cancer, although tremendous progress has been made in understanding the origin of this disease and a putative precursor lesion has been identified …

Investigation Of New Ligand Architechtures Towards Proton And Water Reduction Catalysis By Cobalt Complexes, Debashis Basu Jan 2015

Investigation Of New Ligand Architechtures Towards Proton And Water Reduction Catalysis By Cobalt Complexes, Debashis Basu

Wayne State University Dissertations

We designed several redox-active ligand architectures to optimize and understand the redox, electronic, and catalytic properties of their respective cobalt complexes. Ligand design was varied from pentadentate donor phenolate to tetradentate acceptor oxime in order to reduce the overpotential of hydrogen generation in organic solvents. We altered the substitution, axial ligands and axial ligand substitutions to vary electronic and catalytic properties for such tetra- or pentadentate ligand systems. Knowledge of the nature of the active species for catalysis enabled us to design the pentadentate oxime ligand which exhibited rich reaction chemistry along with suitable catalytic property in organic solvent. Presence …

Photodynamic Therapy As An Effective Therapeutic Approach In Mame Models Of Triple Negative And Inflammatory Breast Cancers, Neha Aggarwal Jan 2015

Photodynamic Therapy As An Effective Therapeutic Approach In Mame Models Of Triple Negative And Inflammatory Breast Cancers, Neha Aggarwal

Wayne State University Dissertations

Introduction: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a minimally invasive, FDA approved therapy for

treatment of several indications including endobronchial and esophageal cancers that are

accessible to light. Triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) and inflammatory breast cancer (IBC)

are aggressive and lethal subtypes of breast cancer that spread to chest wall and dermal

lymphatics, respectively, sites that would be accessible to light. Both TNBC and IBC patients

have a relatively poor survival rate due to lack of targeted therapies. Use of PDT is

underexplored for breast cancers but has been proposed for treatment of subtypes for which a

targeted therapy is unavailable. …

Proteasome Inhibition As A Potential Anti-Breast Cancer Therapy: Mechanisms Of Action And Resistance-Reversing Strategies, Rahul Rajesinh Deshmukh

Wayne State University Dissertations

AMPK activation and Ubiquitin Proteasome System (UPS) inhibition have gained great attention as therapeutic strategies for the treatment of certain types of cancers. While AMPK serves as a master regulator of cellular metabolism, UPS regulates protein homeostasis. Although the crosstalk between them is suggested, the relationship between these two important pathways is not very clear. We observed that proteasome inhibition leads to AMPK activation in human breast cancer cells. We report that a variety of proteasome inhibitors activate AMPK in all of the tested cancer cell lines. Our data using Liver Kinase B1 (LKB1)-deficient cancer cells suggests that proteasome inhibitor-induced …

You Can't Hide Your Lyin' Eyes: The Uses Of Deception In Romantic Relationships, Jaclyn M. Gaule

Wayne State University Theses

A purpose of this study was to further the literature regarding the use of deceptive affection in romantic relationships. This study picks up where previous research left off in that it aimed to identify relational outcomes that may be associated with the use of deceptive affection. This study sought to identify deceptive affectionate behaviors and their role in romantic relationships. Two measures were created; a scale to measure DAMs and a scale to measure WAs, both proved to be reliable. Results from the study provided additional items to be included in the measures going forward. The study did add to …

Protein Ubiquitination In Primary Human Skeletal Muscle Cells Under Hyperinsulinemic Hyperglycemic Conditions, Majed Abdullah Alharbi Jan 2015

Protein Ubiquitination In Primary Human Skeletal Muscle Cells Under Hyperinsulinemic Hyperglycemic Conditions, Majed Abdullah Alharbi

Wayne State University Theses

Ubiquitin proteasome system is a relatively newly discovered pathway for protein degradation. Many studies have successfully pointed out the critical functions that UPS plays in regulating many physiological processes. On the other hand, recent studies suggested that abnormal UPS activities might be involved in the pathophysiology of several disorders including type 2 diabetes. However, the specific changes in UPS during the development of insulin resistance and consequently T2D are still unclear.

UPS is composed of two major steps, a reversible ubiquitin conjugation to the targeted substrate followed by proteasomal degradation of the ubiquitinated proteins. In this study, we examined the …

Isomer Detection Of Radicals Produced By The Flash Pyrolysis Of Heptane And Its Structural Isomers, Steven Lingenfelter

Wayne State University Theses

Radicals can play an important role in combustion chemistry as key intermediates. As such studying them is vital in the study of combustion chemistry. Our study focused on the production of the 1 and 2-propyl radical from heptane isomers. Radicals were produced by flash pyrolysis which was achieved by restively heating a silicon carbide tube through which a molecular beam passed. Strong field ionization was utilized to discriminate between the two propyl isomers. Results indicated the expected trend however the signal intensity was quite low with significant noise. Further improvements are needed to improve the quality as well as the …

Prevalence Of Malaria And Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Deficiency In Malaria-Endemic Southwestern Uganda: Implications For Primaquine Use, Michelle Roh Jan 2015

Prevalence Of Malaria And Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Deficiency In Malaria-Endemic Southwestern Uganda: Implications For Primaquine Use, Michelle Roh

Public Health Theses

Abstract

Introduction: Malaria transmission in Uganda is remarkably heterogeneous, and declines in prevalence have not been uniform. Previous surveys in southwestern Uganda have shown declines in parasite prevalence from 2004 to 2010. As malaria transmission continues to decline in southwestern Uganda, aggressive strategies, such as the addition of primaquine (PQ) to artemisinin-combination therapies (ACTs), are being considered in low transmission settings. Despite the potential benefit of PQ in reducing transmission, concerns over its safety and efficacy have hampered its deployment. In particular, those with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency are at a higher risk of hemolytic toxicity.

Methods: To better assess …

Identification Of Fetal Genomic Copy Number Deletions Associated With Preeclamptic Mothers In The Caucasian Population, Tze-An Yuan Jan 2015

Identification Of Fetal Genomic Copy Number Deletions Associated With Preeclamptic Mothers In The Caucasian Population, Tze-An Yuan

Public Health Theses

Genetic determinants that are associated with preeclampsia still remain elusive

nowadays, which might have resulted from limited understanding of the underlying

pathogenesis mechanisms and the fetal contributions. By using genome-wide association study approach, we identified 2 candidate copy number deletions of the highest odds ratio ranking on chromosome 1 and 19, from 283 US white babies born by the mothers with preeclampsia. Based on the molecular and biological functions of the genes entailed the deleted regions, which contain CTSK, ARNT, and ACTN4, we proposed that these two candidate genomic deletions might be associated with preeclampsia. In a further attempt to …

The Psychodynamics Of Sexual Choice, Anne Dailey Jan 2015

The Psychodynamics Of Sexual Choice, Anne Dailey

Faculty Articles and Papers

The right of sexual autonomy now occupies a central place in the scheme of constitutional liberties. Consensual sexual relations, including fornication, adultery, and sodomy, are understood to lie beyond the reach of law 's regulatory power. Yet as described in this Article, some sexual encounters by their very nature are likely to engage unconscious psychological processes that involve troubling levels of vulnerability and coercion. Drawing on psychoanalysis, this Article proceeds by examining three relationships that raise heightened concerns about unconscious impairments in sexual choice. Part I investigates the way in which adult incest may trigger unconscious feelings of submission on …

The Aspiring And Globalizing Graduate Law Student: A Comment On The Lazarus-Black And Globokar Ll.M. Study, Jayanth K. Krishnan, Vitor M. Dias Jan 2015

The Aspiring And Globalizing Graduate Law Student: A Comment On The Lazarus-Black And Globokar Ll.M. Study, Jayanth K. Krishnan, Vitor M. Dias

Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies

As a thought experiment, in the next section we present a theoretical frame (that builds on what previous scholars have discussed) for understanding motivation-as it relates to the subject focused on by Lazarus-Black and Globokar. Based on this model, we then postulate an alternative motivation for why foreign applicants might wish to pursue their LL.M. studies. We base our hypothesis on the experiences we have had in two countries we know well: India and Brazil. Because this is just a short Comment, we leave the empirical work on our proposal for future research. Our hope is that this exercise might …

Using A Community-Based Strategy To Address The Impacts Of Globalization On Underwater Cultural Heritage Management In The Dominican Republic, Lydia Barbash-Riley Jan 2015

Using A Community-Based Strategy To Address The Impacts Of Globalization On Underwater Cultural Heritage Management In The Dominican Republic, Lydia Barbash-Riley

Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies

This Note addresses the management of the Underwater Cultural Heritage (UCH) in the Dominican Republic as a case study of the effects of two aspects of globalization on cultural and environmental resource management in the developing world: the international convergence of values and the horizontal delegation of state power to private actors due to economic constraints. This Note posits that even as the global community of states moves toward a consensus on the ethical management of the UCH, this convergence combined with the global trend of horizontal delegation may incentivize some lesser-developed countries to deal with the economic pressures of …

Use Of Entropy For Feature Selection With Intrusion Detection System Parameters, Frank Acker Jan 2015

Use Of Entropy For Feature Selection With Intrusion Detection System Parameters, Frank Acker

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

The metric of entropy provides a measure about the randomness of data and a measure of information gained by comparing different attributes. Intrusion detection systems can collect very large amounts of data, which are not necessarily manageable by manual means. Collected intrusion detection data often contains redundant, duplicate, and irrelevant entries, which makes analysis computationally intensive likely leading to unreliable results. Reducing the data to what is relevant and pertinent to the analysis requires the use of data mining techniques and statistics. Identifying patterns in the data is part of analysis for intrusion detections in which the patterns are categorized …

Incremental Sparse-Pca Feature Extraction For Data Streams, Jean-Pierre Nziga Jan 2015

Incremental Sparse-Pca Feature Extraction For Data Streams, Jean-Pierre Nziga

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Intruders attempt to penetrate commercial systems daily and cause considerable financial losses for individuals and organizations. Intrusion detection systems monitor network events to detect computer security threats. An extensive amount of network data is devoted to detecting malicious activities.

Storing, processing, and analyzing the massive volume of data is costly and indicate the need to find efficient methods to perform network data reduction that does not require the data to be first captured and stored. A better approach allows the extraction of useful variables from data streams in real time and in a single pass. The removal of irrelevant attributes …

Identification Of Resilient Individuals And Those At Risk For Performance Deficits Under Stress., Brent D. Winslow, Meredith B. Carroll, Jonathan W. Martin, Glenn Surpris, George L. Chadderdon Jan 2015

Identification Of Resilient Individuals And Those At Risk For Performance Deficits Under Stress., Brent D. Winslow, Meredith B. Carroll, Jonathan W. Martin, Glenn Surpris, George L. Chadderdon

Aeronautics Faculty Publications

Human task performance is affected by exposure to physiological and psychological stress. The ability to measure the physiological response to stressors and correlate that to task performance could be used to identify resilient individuals or those at risk for stress-related performance decrements. Accomplishing this prior to performance under severe stress or the development of clinical stress disorders could facilitate focused preparation such as tailoring training to individual needs. Here we measure the effects of stress on physiological response and performance through behavior, physiological sensors, and subjective ratings, and identify which individuals are at risk for stress-related performance decrements. Participants performed …

The Use Of Rna Interference To Mitigate Pulmonary Fibrosis In Response To Asbestos Exposure, Sarah Kinsey Jan 2015

The Use Of Rna Interference To Mitigate Pulmonary Fibrosis In Response To Asbestos Exposure, Sarah Kinsey

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

The adverse health effects of exposure to asbestos are widely known and have been well documented. When a person is diagnosed with asbestosis, a chronic lung disease caused by inhaling asbestos fibers, few treatment options exist, none of which halt or reverse the progression of the disease. The rapidly growing field of gene therapy offers new avenues for potential treatments worthy of investigation. The detrimental effects of asbestos exposure are due to the physiological response of the lungs to asbestos fibers in the form of fibrosis, a result of excess extracellular collagen deposition. A protein called SPARC (Secreted Protein Acidic …

Fatal Woman, Revisited: Understanding Female Stereotypes In Film Noir, Danielle L. Barnes-Smith Jan 2015

Fatal Woman, Revisited: Understanding Female Stereotypes In Film Noir, Danielle L. Barnes-Smith

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

Film noir stereotypes female characters through the archetype of the femme fatale: the fatal woman or the fatal wife. However, critics are currently re-examining the femme fatale. For example, in the second paragraph of Film Noir’s Progressive Portrayal of Women, Stephanie Blaser and John Blaser write “even when [film noir] depicts women as dangerous and worthy of destruction, [it] also shows that women are confined by the roles traditionally open to them.” With Blaser and Blaser’s understanding of the double nature of the femme fatale in mind, can one say that the femme fatale generates fear of …

Using A Spiral To Estimate Spatial Lattice Model Parameters, Geoffrey Glidewell Jan 2015

Using A Spiral To Estimate Spatial Lattice Model Parameters, Geoffrey Glidewell

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

This project explores the autologistic model for spatially correlated binary lattice data and uses a one-dimensional spiral to approximate two-dimensional data. An example of this type of data is the presence of disease in plants in a lattice framework. Each plant is labeled “diseased” or “non-diseased,” where the presence of disease in one plant might increase, decrease or not affect the likelihood of disease in a neighboring plant. In order to fit an autologistic model to real data, the method of maximum likelihood would ideally be used to estimate the model parameters for the entire lattice. However, the model form …

The Omura’s whale (Balaenoptera omurai) was described as a new species in 2003 and then later as an ancient lineage basal to a Bryde’s/sei whale clade. Currently known only from whaling and stranding specimens primarily from the western Pacific and eastern Indian Oceans, there exist no confirmed field observations or ecological/behavioral data. Here we present the first genetically confirmed documentation of living Omura’s whales, including descriptions of basic ecology and behavior from northwest Madagascar. Species identification was confirmed through molecular phylogenetic analyses of biopsies collected from 23 animals. All individuals shared a single haplotype in a 402bp sequence …
