Information & Equilibrium In Insurance Markets With Big Data, Peter Siegelman Jan 2015

Information & Equilibrium In Insurance Markets With Big Data, Peter Siegelman

Faculty Articles and Papers

Asymmetric information makes the behavior of insurance markets very difficult to predict. But this Article argues that the increasing use of Big Data by insurers will not result in forecasts of loss that are so accurate that they eliminate uncertainty, and with it, the possibility of insurance. Big Data techniques might lead to a 'flip" in informational asymmetry, resulting in a situation in which insurers know more about their customers than the latter know about themselves. But the effects of such a development could actually be benign. Finally, the Article considers the potential for Big (or at least, More) Data …

Use Of Landsat Data To Characterize Burn Severity, Forest Structure And Invasion By Paulownia (Paulownia Tomentosa) In An Eastern Deciduous Forest, Kentucky, Suraj Upadhaya Jan 2015

Use Of Landsat Data To Characterize Burn Severity, Forest Structure And Invasion By Paulownia (Paulownia Tomentosa) In An Eastern Deciduous Forest, Kentucky, Suraj Upadhaya

Theses and Dissertations--Forestry and Natural Resources

Landsat imagery has been used successfully to assess burn severity and monitor post-fire forest structure in a variety of ecosystems, but to date there are few documented studies on its application in the eastern deciduous forests of the eastern United States. The occurrence of a wildfire in the Daniel Boone National Forest in2010 provided a rare opportunity for research into the use of Landsat data for assessing burn severity and its ecological effects. We used differenced normalized burn ratio (∆NBR) to quantify burn severity. The ∆NBR based burn severity classification had 70% agreement with a qualitative ground-based burn severity assessment. …

Predictors Of Relationship Dissolution In Lesbian, Gay, And Heterosexual Adoptive Parents, Abbie E. Goldberg, Randi L. Garcia

Psychology: Faculty Publications

Little work has examined relationship dissolution or divorce in adoptive parents or same-sex parent couples. The current study examined predictors of relationship dissolution across the first 5 years of parenthood among a sample of heterosexual, lesbian, and gay male adoptive couples. Of the 190 couples in the study, 15 (7.9%) dissolved their relationships during the first 5 years of adoptive parenthood. Specifically, 7 of 57 lesbian couples (12.3%), 1 of 49 gay male couples (2.0%), and 7 of 84 heterosexual couples (8.3%) dissolved their unions. Results of our logistic regression analysis revealed that the odds of relationship dissolution were significantly …

Quaking Aspen At The Residential-Wildland Interface: Elk Herbivory Hinders Forest Conservation., Paul C. Rogers, Allison Jones, James Catlin, James Shuler, Arthur Morris, Michael R. Kuhns

Aspen Bibliography

T: Quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) forests are experiencing numerous impediments across North America. In the West, recent drought, fire suppression, insects, diseases, climate trends, inappropriate management, and ungulate herbivory are impacting these high biodiversity forests. Additionally, ecological tension zones are sometimes created at residential-wildland interfaces with divergent management directives. For example, private conservation reserves bordering public land may be degraded from browsing where game species find refuge from hunting and plentiful forage. We examined putative herbivore impacts to nearly pure aspen forests at Wolf Creek Ranch (WCR), a sparsely developed residential landscape in northern Utah. Forty-three one-hectare monitoring …

Altered Fire Regimes And The Persistence Of Quaking Aspen In The Rocky Mountains: A Literature Review, Aaron Rosenblum Jan 2015

Altered Fire Regimes And The Persistence Of Quaking Aspen In The Rocky Mountains: A Literature Review, Aaron Rosenblum

Aspen Bibliography

The persistence of quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) is of significant importance to land managers in the Rocky Mountain region. Fire suppression in the past century has been implicated as a mechanism influencing aspen population dynamics, as aspen are generally considered an early seral disturbance adapted species. The heterogeneity of aspen community assemblages and fire regimes makes it difficult to discern what the result of fire suppression has been at large spatial and temporal scales. Decision makers should investigate the questions at hand at the stand level in their study location to best determine the mechanisms at play, as well …

Long-Term Vegetation Change In Utah's Henry Mountains: A Study In Repeat Photography, Charles E. Kay Jan 2015

Long-Term Vegetation Change In Utah's Henry Mountains: A Study In Repeat Photography, Charles E. Kay

Aspen Bibliography

An extensive search was conducted of archival and other sources to locate as many historical photographs as possible for the Henry Mountains in south-central Utah. Those images were then taken into the field, the original camera stations relocated, and modern pictures made of the historical scenes to evaluate long-term vegetation change and land management activities. In all, 626 repeat photo sets were compiled—608 by the author and 18 by Earl Hindley. This book includes 126 photo sets that were representative of the areas studied.

Aspen Bibliography

The southwestern region of the Yukon Territory of Canada has experienced an unprecedented spruce bark beetle outbreak (Dendroctonus rufipennis) and an increase in the frequency of forest fires that extend beyond historical trends and that have caused significant impacts on forest structure and composition. A Strategic Forest Management Plan (SFMP) for the Champagne and Aishihik Traditional Territory located in the southwest Yukon was implemented in 2004 in response to the spruce bark beetle (D. rufipennis) infestation and increased fire risk. The plan has recommended salvage harvesting of beetle-killed stands as a strategy to facilitate the development …

Engagement In Activities And Cognitive Functioning Among Older Adults In The Health And Retirement Study, Pamela Emily May

Wayne State University Dissertations

The goal of this dissertation is to examine the effect of cognitive and social activities on cognitive performance and health conditions in a national sample of older adults from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS). This dissertation first aimed to identify longitudinal relations between activity frequency and cognitive functioning. Two hypotheses were tested, baseline activity frequency predicts change in cognitive functioning over time, and baseline cognitive performance predicts change in activity frequency over time. The dissertation’s second aim was to identify links between activity frequency and cognitive trajectories. The third aim was to identify longitudinal relations between activity frequency and …

The Increasing Weight Of Regulation: Countries Combat The Global Obesity Epidemic, Allyn L. Taylor, Emily Whelan Parento, Laura A. Schmidt

Indiana Law Journal

Obesity is a global epidemic, exacting an enormous human and economic toll. In the absence of a comprehensive global governance strategy, states have increasingly employed a wide array of legal strategies targeting the drivers of obesity. This Article identifies recent global trends in obesity-related legislation and makes the normative case for an updated global governance strategy.

National governments have responded to the epidemic both by strengthening traditional interventions and by developing novel legislative strategies. This response consists of nine important trends: (1) strengthened and tailored tax measures; (2) broadened use of counter-advertising and health campaigns; (3) expanded food labeling; (4) …

A Structural Equation Model Of Factor Two Psychopathy, Behavioral Activation, Positive Alcohol Expectancies, And Alcohol Use, Benjamin Varner Laliberte Jan 2015

A Structural Equation Model Of Factor Two Psychopathy, Behavioral Activation, Positive Alcohol Expectancies, And Alcohol Use, Benjamin Varner Laliberte

Wayne State University Theses

A large body of literature indicates that there is a relationship between psychopathy and heavy drinking. Very few studies, however, have examined potential mediators of this relationship. As a result, it is difficult to develop intervention strategies that target early steps in the psychopathy/alcohol use pathway. The present study tested a structural equation model linking secondary psychopathy to alcohol use through the influence of both behavioral activation and positive alcohol expectancies. The study was also one of the first to utilize both self-report and laboratory measures of behavioral activation.

Radiation-Induced Esophagitis Is Mitigated By Soy Isoflavones, Matthew Donovan Fountain Jan 2015

Radiation-Induced Esophagitis Is Mitigated By Soy Isoflavones, Matthew Donovan Fountain

Wayne State University Theses

Lung cancer patients receiving radiotherapy present with acute and chronic esophagitis, resulting in pain and difficulties swallowing. These effects are due to radiation injury to the normal tissues in the esophagus. Our previous studies in pre-clinical models of lung cancer and naïve mice have shown that soy isoflavones alleviates radiation-induced toxicity to normal lung, including a decrease in pneumonitis and fibrosis. In this study, we have investigated whether radiation-induced esophagitis can be reduced by soy isoflavones. C57BL/6 mice were treated with 10 Gy or 25 Gy for thoracic irradiation and soy isoflavones given daily at 1mg/mouse up to 16 weeks. …

Novel Pulsatile Cardiac Assist Pump, Lakshmi Mohanadas Jan 2015

Novel Pulsatile Cardiac Assist Pump, Lakshmi Mohanadas

Wayne State University Theses

The project involve the research and development of a pulsatile, complex or continuous flow in biological and non-biological systems implantable heart assist pump. Specifically as a 20% cardiac assist for persons from congestive heart failure and other cardiac abnormalities. The pulsatile cardiac assist pump would provide upto 20% of the blood pumping process from the venous supply to the arterial supply. Current pumps are largely complete bypass pumps or large volume pumps that produce significant long term blood cell damage resulting in thrombosis. Most are not pulsatile which offers a significant physiological advantage. The pump under development is designed to …

Fabrication And Characterization Of A Robust, Field- Deployable, Optical Sensor Designed To Detect Particles In Oils., Navya Pandreka Jan 2015

Fabrication And Characterization Of A Robust, Field- Deployable, Optical Sensor Designed To Detect Particles In Oils., Navya Pandreka

Wayne State University Theses

Some types of bacteria and fungus can use iron or non-ferrous metals for their metabolic process. Sulfate-reducing bacteria can corrode pipes in the oil industry and high-end machinery. Both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria often degrade fuel quality and cause fuel system corrosion or alter the chemical properties of the fluid. This causes significant economic damage and safety concerns. Therefore, there is a need for a system to continuously monitor fuel or lubricant oil for the presence of bacteria and fungus.

The main goal of this project was to develop a sensor that can detect bacteria and other ferrous and non-ferrous …

The Relationship Between Axonal Injury, Biomarker Expression And Mechanical Response In A Rodent Head Impact Acceleration Model, Yan Li

Wayne State University Dissertations

In the United States 1.4 million people sustain traumatic brain injury (TBI) each year, resulting in 235,000 hospitalizations and 50,000 fatalities annually. Traumatic axonal injury (TAI) is a serious outcome of TBI that accounts for 40-50% of hospitalizations due to head injury and one third of the mortality due to TBI, and it is difficult to diagnose and evaluate. The purpose of this dissertation is to determine mechanical injury predictors for TAI and identify potential biomarkers to evaluate TAI.

In this dissertation, a modified Marmarou impact acceleration injury model was developed to allow the monitoring of velocity of the impactor …

Closing The Gap: Greater Retention And Achievement Through Service-Learning At Wayne State University, Monita H. Mungo

Wayne State University Dissertations

Despite the ideals of the achievement ideology that invade every facet of American life, there remains a large population of people who are not able to access the basic tool – education – needed to make the American dream a reality. The lack of educational opportunities for Americans of color is an important social issue because their systemic exclusion from higher education has significant implications for America’s economic future beyond social justice and equality. Americans espouse the ideology of equality and opportunity, and the educational system has always been structured on the notion of preparing individuals with skills for the …
